ussian tourists have been left stranded in Phuket and unable to pay for hotels or other tourist services due to sanctions against Russian-based banks which have left the tourists unable to use their credit cards. Most Russian tourists prefer to pay for goods and services by credit card, including hotels, accommodation, food and other products, but have been left without means to conduct financial transactions, said a report
shared by the Phuket office of the Ministry of Interior on Mar 4. The sanctions, although led by the US, have received worldwide support in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Feb 24. The siege of the Ukraine capital Kiev and historic city Kharkiv has seen civilians targeted and killed by Russian military forces. More than a million refugees have fled the country. Thailand has remained “neutral” on the conflict, but joined 140 other nations in a UN resolution condemning the invasion, However, Thailand has so far refused to name Russia as the
aggressor or make any commitment in joining any sanctions, which global companies are now also enforcing by their own choice. “Now hotel operators and some restaurants are starting to face problems that tourists do not have money to pay for accommodation and meals because they cannot use credit cards,” the report shared on Mar 4 said. “Some of them wanted to return, but they couldn’t because there is no cash,” the report added, citing an unnamed source in Phuket’s hotel industry.
