OFFICIALS LOOK TO DRAFT ‘RED FLAG’ LAW AFTER 17 TOURISTS RESCUED AT PATONG ON ONE DAY Tanyaluk Sakoot & Eakkpop Thongtub reporter2@classactmedia.co.th

huket Vice Governor Supoj Rotreuang Na Nongkhai this week revealed that he will raise the issue with the Ministry of Tourism and Sports in Bangkok of having a law drafted so that red “No Swimming” flags can be enforced on Phuket’s beaches. Speaking after a conference focusing on developing Phuket as a Smart City at the Novotel Phokeetra hotel on Tuesday (Sept 3), Vice Governor Supoj explained, “The Phuket Government has been trying to find ways to
prevent drownings from happening at our beaches, because there is no way to enforce red flags at the beaches under Thai law. “We will present this issue about red flags to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, to have a law written about the issue.” Recognition that only posting red flags has little to no effect on preventing tourists from entering the water has been a long time coming, and V/Gov Supoj’s admission came one week after lifeguards at Patong Beach rescued 17 tourists from strong waves and dangerous rip currents at the popular beach last Tuesday (Aug 27).
The tourists rescued comprised four Chinese, one Thai woman, an Arabian man and 11 European tourists, Patong Surf Life Saving Chief Somprasong Sangchart told The Phuket News. Lifeguards had repeatedly warned the tourists to swim only in the safe zones, Mr Somprasong said. “Some were pushed out of the zone by strong waves, but others simply ignored our warnings,” he added. All 17 people rescued did not require hospital treatment. “After we provided assistance, all of them were fine,” Mr Somprasong said. Lifeguards closed Patong Beach

to swimmers last Friday (Aug 30) during the height of foul weather, which came amid a national weather warning, as strong wind and rain and powerful waves lashed the coast. Safe swim zones marked with yellow-red f lags were set up last Saturday, yet Mr Somprasong’s call for beachgoers to obey lifeguards’ warnings and the red flags posted elsewhere along the beach went unheeded, with lifeguards rescuing eight more tourists last Sunday (Sept 1). Meanwhile, Chinese tourist Yin Lei, 35, from Henan, China, was swept from a rock by a large wave at Freedom Beach, south of Patong...
