King D. Carlos I (Portugal) (1863-1908) The King Carlos, was a painter of talent, with preference for watercolors. This choice of theme reflected another of his passions, to ornithology. Received awards in several international competitions.In addition to watching, was passionate oceanography, having acquired a yacht, the Amelia, specifically to engage in oceanographic campaigns. Established a deep friendship with Albert I, Prince of Monaco, equally passionate about oceanography and things of the sea. This relationship was born Vasco da Gama Aquarium, intended to play a similar role in Portugal the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco. Some oceanographic work carried out by D. Carlos, or sponsored by him, were pioneers in the world oceanography. Honoring this facet of the monarch, the Portuguese Navy currently operates one oceanographic vessel with the name of D. Carlos I.
