CELEBRATE THE MAGIC... climb. Things are looking up in this little end of the city.

Tis the season to be jolly… I admit it, until I had children of my own I never was a big Christmas kind of person. But truly, when you look at the wonder and magic in their eyes that the season brings, it’s pretty easy to become a convert.

It has been quite an inaugural year for our little magazine. We sadly lost a dear friend but also gained many new ones. I cannot say it has been without many trials, mistakes and difficulties, but we persevered and as you may have noticed, are re-launching ourselves with a bold new look and feel. This is something I have to admit could not have been accomplished without the support of friends, family, advertisers and most importantly YOU, the community of Rutland.

Granted, I still have a few things about the season that I hold steadfast from my ‘meh’ days. I dislike being bombarded with Christmas music starting November 1st – I’m sure there are some customer service workers in many of our stores who feel the same – call it cruel and unusual punishment. I refuse to put up decorations until after the beginning of December and choose to take them down before New Year’s (I’m not a Grinch; I have pets and it’s better for everyone – there’s even an article in this issue about that). But yes, I do love the season and the magic associated with it. Take the time, go through our neighbourhoods and look at some of the spectacular light displays – better yet, tour them with a child and see the magic in their eyes. I decorate vicariously through other people’s displays, not because I’m lazy but the thought of climbing a ladder in sub-zero temperatures scares the crap out of me. We definitely have to applaud our residents, URBA, our shop keepers

Myself and everyone associated with I Love Rutland are proud to say we are from here and that this is OUR community. The Magic of Christmas is infectious when experienced through the eyes of a child.

and the city for the beautiful displays they put up for our enjoyment. It has been busy in our community, with many businesses opening or expanding. The annual May Days celebration boasted their best year ever. The Rutland Transit Exchange is open for business and Highway 33 is getting a much needed makeover. HOLIDAY GREETINGS Ron Cannan MP Kelowna-Lake Country

make our team your team

print | web graphic design 778.363.0522 chase@iloverutland.com

It’s great to have the opportunity once again to say “Hello!” to all you “I Love Rutland” readers. I’m sure many of you, like my family, are in full “getting ready for the holidays” mode. Each year when I send out my annual Christmas card to my constituents, I use the opportunity to encourage everyone to seek out a local charity as a way of giving at this time of year. Rutland, as with all Canadian communities, has its challenges but as a community you have proved many times that you are generous and willing to do what you can to help your neighbours. One of the fastest growing movements aimed at addressing the social challenges in our community is something called social innovation. Social innovation essentially involves mobilizing partnerships between nonprofits, charities, social enterprises, and business to find solutions to our most pressing social challenges.

I wish you the best of the Christmas Season and a Healthy and Happy New Year!

to Canada’s social development challenges, while ignoring the innovative and successful approaches being developed in local communities and the private sector. In fact, efforts to encourage and create vital links between community organizations and the private sector are already happening here in the Okanagan. Organizations and individuals from across the Okanagan Valley are coming together with creative ways to make positive social change through Okanagan Changemakers, a non-profit organization focused on solving social problems through collaboration, mentorship and action. Highlighting some of the best For-Profit, Non-Profit, Established Registered Charity and Youth Led initiatives, this organization is bringing together like-minded social entrepreneurs to talk about social enterprise.

This October, in a keynote speech at the Social Enterprise World Forum, the Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Employment and Social Development highlighted the importance of social innovation in addressing social challenges in Canada.

Like Rutland, many of the communities up and down the Valley are home to some of the best and brightest entrepreneurs in Canada, who are leading the way to a more innovative economy. Not only are they driving the local economy toward job creation, they are also finding solutions to our most pressing social challenges. Business or a charity; a worker or a volunteer; a senior or young person, your dedication to your neighbours is ensuring a better quality of life in your community and its proof once more that Rutland is one of the best places to call home.

He noted that for too long governments have imposed solutions

All the best this holiday season and I look forward to serving you in 2014!

Since 2011, the Federal Government has signaled its support for social innovation initiatives to help community organizations develop and implement innovative ideas for social problems.

The past year has been an exciting and positive time for us in Rutland. In September, we announced $3.4 million in improvements to Highway 33, between Muir Road and Mills Road, in Rutland. These upgrades include pedestrian bumpouts, countdown timers at controlled intersections, and upgraded traffic signals. When it comes to roads and infrastructure, safety is always a top priority for us, and with the growth in our community, our infrastructure must be developed to meet new demand. In partnership with MP Ron Cannan and MLA Steve Thomson, it was my privilege to announce a provincial contribution of $32.2 million towards the $50.2 million project to six-lane Highway 97 through Rutland, from Highway 33 to Edwards Road, and to improve intersections for pedestrian and motorist safety. It’s important for our community to have safe and efficient public transit, and this year marked the opening of the new Rutland Transit Exchange. The Rutland transit exchange was funded through a partnership of $1.4-million contribution from the federal Gas Tax Fund, $2 million from the Government of British Columbia and $1.1 million from the City of Kelowna, for a total of $4.5 million. In addition to the new transit exchange, new environmentally-friendly Vicinity buses have been added to the Kelowna regional transit system. Health care is a top priority for all British Columbians, including those in Rutland. Over the past

The capital project of $255 million, of which $150 million was contributed by our provincial government and Interior Health, includes a larger emergency department, new operating rooms, and significantly more space for specialists and in-patient care. These developments serve not only our community, but also our friends in neighboring regions, who travel here to see specialists and use these worldclass medical facilities. VINEYARD LIGHTS It is a festive sight at our own neighbourhood winery this winter with 1800 feet of lights guiding you down the driveway to House of Rose and their colourful picnic area all dolled up for Christmas.

Contributed Special to I Love Rutland

Set up as a walkable area, the first Christmas Light Up is a delight for young and old. With hot chocolate and mulled wine for purchase (proceeds going to the Kelowna Food Bank) the family can enjoy being in a magical rural setting, minutes from home. A beautiful nativity scene, dancing elves, and their 20 foot high anniversary rose decked out for the season are just a few of the displays you’ll see in this holiday wonderland. “We wanted to do something special at the end of our 20th anniversary year of activities and what better way than to bring a bit of joy to children and their families over the holidays,” says Aura Rose, owner and winemaker. “My husband knows I love Christmas lights and he surprised me with this wonderful set up using only energy efficient LED lights!” The House of Rose Light Up starts on Wednesday Dec 11th and runs Wednesdays through Saturdays from 5 until 8:30 pm until January 4th. The wine shop will be open during this time (it is also open Tuesday through Saturday 12 noon to 5 pm all winter long). Adds Rose, “the neighbourhood is also invited to our annual Christmas Sale on December 14th from 12 to 5 pm. We’ll have mulled wine to sample, lots of Christmas gift ideas for the wine lover in your house on sale as well as some great deals on wine.” House of Rose Winery www.houseofrose.ca 2270 Garner Rd Kelowna 250 765 0802

LET THE JOURNEY BEGIN Wendi Swarbrick I Love Rutland

Some of you will recall in our October issue of I Love Rutland, we issued a challenge to the community, find us - Rutland’s Best Personal Trainer! An individual with drive, commitment, expertise, and more importantly heart and the will to want to irrevocably change someone’s life for the better, quite possibly even save that life. Here at I Love Rutland we have tremendous faith in our Rutland Community, yet we were still very impressed with the responses we received, with both the number of submissions as well as the quality, the entrants were qualified and dedicated trainers willing to commit

of their time, expertise, facilities and equipment for the long term in order to change the life of a person they had yet to meet. Our decision was not an easy one to make, however; In the end, we are very pleased with our choice and feel that she is the individual we were looking for, for this particular challenge. We are very pleased to introduce to the community – Rhonda Laturnus, owner of Results 4 Life Fitness located in Black Mountain. In the coming months, each monthly issue of “I Love Rutland” will feature an update on the progress of our challenge participant, including the participant sharing the pain and fear, the triumphs and struggles of

the challenge. Rhonda Laturnus will keep us updated on her training and motivational techniques, her nutrition planning and her plan for the coming month. Later in the challenge the participant will be introduced to the community and we will be able to follow closely the weekly and monthly progress of the participant. We will post updates to the website in between the monthly issues of I Love Rutland. If any of you have questions or comments, we welcome your input. Please forward submissions to chase@iloverutland.com and we will respond. Please send our participant your encouragement and support, motivation is an integral part of success.

A LIFELONG COMMITMENT Rhonda Laturnus Results 4 Life Fitness

I am very excited and honored to be a part of my client’s journey to a healthier lifestyle. My client is eager, motivated and has shown she is committed to succeed and is ready and willing to make permanent life altering changes. During the next few weeks we will be focusing on setting realistic goals and making small, yet effective changes in eating habits. As small changes become habit, we will continue to add more healthy changes. Permanent weight loss takes time and effort—and a lifelong commitment. To stay committed to your weight loss, you need to be focused; it takes alot of mental and physical energy to change your habits. When my client and I met for our first initial visit we discussed current lifestyle habits and created a baseline assessment. We discussed motivating factors and possible limiting factors (what’s holding them back)? Small but important changes and new mind sets such as thinking of water and exercise as food groups in your diet can make a huge impact

I’M UP FOR THE CHALLENGE The Participant I Love Rutland

This is going to be quite the adventure. I have so many people supporting me at work and at home. I have them all counting on me to make the most of this amazing opportunity I have been given. It’s a lot of pressure….in a good way. Just the thing I need to keep me on track. Although there is of course the scary thought that one day it is all going to come down to me and wanting this change badly enough to do it right. And it really is time to make a change. I visited Las Vegas for the first time recently. It was like I was traveling as two people…literally and figuratively. Thankfully I managed to squeeze

myself into one seat though. The whole time I was thinking about how much more I will be able to do and see and about how much more fun even shopping and seeing the sites will be when I am not huffing and puffing along. One moment of clarity was peeking in the window of The Heart Attack Grill late at night. It’s a surreal place where people over 350lbs eat free and people scarf down greasy food in hospital gowns attended by wait staff dressed as surgeons and nurses. A tiny couple was standing on their giant scale together only weighing 248 lbs and it really hit me. By being the size I am, I am practically signing up for a heart attack. Not doing anything would be like deciding I do not care if I die. But I do care, and it is time.

IS IT IRRATIONAL TO BE JEALOUS OF THE EX? C. Dnaltur & Rutland Girl I Love Rutland

I’m getting married to an amazing guy in two weeks. We’ve been together for almost 2 1/2 years, and I am completely in love with him, he is everything to me... But here’s what happened: I went on his Face book recently (I randomly sign on when I’m exceptionally bored, he knows I do this) it was the morning after his bachelor party and I saw that while he was pretty drunk (he was texting me around the same time, so I know) he sent a message to his exgirlfriend of four years, giving her his number and telling her to call him anytime. Now, this is a girl that he was very much in love with, and it took him a really long time to get over her … at least, I thought he was over her. I think I was always a little bit insecure about this particular ex, and wondered if he still harbored feelings for her. I don’t know if I’m overreacting but I’m seriously considering whether I should be marrying someone who may still be in love with his ex-girlfriend. Do those feelings ever completely go away? I guess in the end I just don’t want to be anyone’s second choice. The message worries me, and also really, really hurts. So, I guess my question is: is it normal for a guy to do something like this? Should I be worried? — Wedding Bell Blues He Said:

First of all congratulations on your

upcoming nuptials. Speaking from experience (OK, a couple of them), it is a very stressful period and your emotions can run very high in both directions. You know what isn’t really normal? That you check your fiancé’s Facebook when you’re “exceptionally bored.” I don’t buy that that’s your motivation for snooping — and, yes, it’s still snooping, whether he’s privy to it or not. I think you’re looking for something. I think there’s a part of you that doesn’t fully, 100% trust your fiancé, either because you are insecure about this particular ex or because you are unsure and afraid about what he may be doing when you are not with him, so you check Facebook for any clues that he may be behaving inappropriately. Personally, I do not think you have anything to worry about with him being in contact with his ex. Again it’s a highly stressful time for everyone and it is normal for someone to reach out to someone they trust implicitly for advice or reassurance. In the end, it’s you he’s going to be standing next to at the alter. But then if you can’t let go of your insecurities, perhaps you are not ready to get married just yet. She Said:

Of good lord – talk about over thinking things. Let me share some realistic insight. I will say the only part of “he saids” response that I agree

When they’re not arguing with each other, Rutland Girl and C. Dnaltur make up the senior writing staff for I Love Rutland. Ironically, once you get past all the tension, they’re actually really good friends. Just don’t tell them that.

with is that you don’t sign in because you are bored – you sign in because you want to know who your fiancé is communicating with. If his account is open for you to look at, and he is aware that you occasionally do so, then I don’t consider it snooping. If he didn’t want you to do so, it would be locked and he would tell you, under no uncertain terms, don’t invade his privacy again. Most committed couples nowadays are very open about things like their Facebook accounts, cell phones, you name it. Locked phones and password protected face book accounts would be a much bigger red flag in my opinion than a drunken message to an ex. It’s a very unusual person that hasn’t done or said something that they didn’t mean or regretted while under the influence. If your fiancé was harbouring any leftover feelings for his ex or wondering if he was marrying the wrong woman, it wouldn’t take getting blind drunk to send her a message, trust me on this one. Handle it like a big girl, if she does start calling, tell him that you don’t like it and it’s not appropriate, and remind him that if the roles were reversed, he’d probably be coming unglued. And do yourself a favour, stay off his Facebook – women are born with incredible intuition, if there is something wrong in your relationship, you will know, we’ve always known, long long before Facebook

Fill the Kettle and make a difference in someone’s life!

rutland proud

YEAR END... Rutland Girl I Love Rutland

Here we are again – another December has snuck up on us as it does every year. A few years back, I was warned by someone older and wiser than myself that the sneaking up accelerates. Those words have come true; it has turned into December arriving at a near lightning fast speed the last couple years. December, a life force all its own, capable of so much, both good and bad, a month that is, for many, a time of reflection on life, family, personal growth, health and successes, or lack thereof. December can make us thankful, grateful, incredibly social, giving and forgiving, but for some it is an angry, sad, bitter, often lonely time. However, in the end most everyone has thankfulness in their hearts; for one thing or another, no matter how miniscule or exorbitant, religious or traditional, child like or community spirited, the thankfulness is there. Personally, I’ve had a year like many in our community – very busy, a year full of change and hard work, accomplishments and milestones and ultimately, pride in much of what I’ve accomplished. It was accompanied by plenty of trepidation but I think that’s life these days. Rutland is no different; a community that is the sum of its peoples.

Rutland has had a rockin’ year, full of positive change brought on by the hard work of some truly inspiring people and by the driving force of the residents. We have much to be proud of and, for those who haven’t had their eyes opened yet and still feel like Rutland is not quite up to par with some of the communities around us; I would challenge them to spend a little time with a group of Rutland teenagers. Their generation sees Rutland as it should be seen; they are very proud to be from Rutland for many reasons and they don’t think twice about saying “I’m from Rutland”. The first person I saw wearing a Straight Out of Rutland shirt was a young guy about 25 years old. I asked him about his shirt and commented that it sort of went against how most people feel about Rutland and he said, word for word, “oh ya, Rutland’s the sh#% man. I love being from Rutland.” His genuine appreciation for where he had grown up was so real, it was one of those moments that made me look at things a little differently. Now, as a mom of two Rutland teenage boys, I’ve had the pleasure of a house full of kids from RSS and RMS more times than I can count. After the exchange regarding the t-shirt, I became a little more observant, although that in itself can be traumatizing as you never know what you’re going to hear

when listening to a bunch of teenage football players. These kids really opened my eyes; they see Rutland in a totally positive way. Most of the ones I know have lived in Rutland their whole lives; they attended elementary school in Rutland, then moved on to middle school and ultimately R.S.S. These kids are from diverse socioeconomic back grounds and ethnicities; whether they come from the “burbs” of Rutland North, an Ellison Acreage or a view home up at Quail Ridge, they are bonded as friends and kids from Rutland and they have no shame in it. That is more than I can say for a lot of the adults that live here. Quite to the contrary, these kids are filled with pride and spirit that comes from loving who they are and where they’re from. A reminder to all of us this holiday season, a time for friends, family and the spirit of giving, we have a lot to be thankful for and proud of and one of the things that we should always be proud of are our children, our young people. Don’t be so busy teaching them that you don’t notice that they know a thing or two that we missed. Not all lessons are difficult; sometimes they are so simple and the best character builders. As I was reminded by a house full of boys - we may not have the best football equipment, but we still kick their asses – now that is what makes us “Rutland Proud”!

did you know

‘YULE’ LOVE THESE TIDBITS AFTER queuing up to get your turkey, you arrive home only to find the cat has swallowed most of the tinsel and you completely forgot to buy any mandarin oranges.

C. Dnaltur I Love Rutland

But have you ever stopped to wonder how these traditions started - why we kiss under the mistletoe, or give each other stockings full of goodies? Here are festive facts to get you even more in the mood for Christmas... US scientists calculated that santa would have to visit 822 homes a second to deliver all the world’s presents on Christmas Eve, travelling at 650 miles a second. Robins on cards were a joke 150 years ago when postmen wore red tunics and were named after them. Although now mostly vegetarian, in Victorian times, mince pies were made with beef and spices. The tradition of putting fruit in stockings comes from 12th-century French nuns who left socks full of fruit and nuts at houses of the poor. Despite the tale of three wise men paying homage to baby Jesus, the bible never gives a number. Matthew’s gospel

refers to merely “wise men”. Hanging stockings out comes from the dutch custom of leaving shoes packed with food for St Nicholas’s donkeys. He would leave small gifts in return. The common depiction of Santa Claus used today was drawn by Norman Rockwell in the 1930s for the Coca-Cola company. The word noel derives from the french expression “les bonnes nouvelles” or “the good news”. Jesus was probably born in a cave and not a wooden stable, say biblical scholars. The abbreviation Xmas isn’t irreligious. The letter X is a Greek abbreviation for Christ. The world’s tallest mas tree at 221ft high was erected in a washington shopping mall in 1950. James Pierpont’s 1857 song Jingle Bells was first called One Horse Open Sleigh and was written for Thanksgiving. In 1647, after the English civil war, Oliver Cromwell banned festivities. The law wasn’t lifted until 1660. In 1999, residents of the state of Maine in america built the world’s biggest ever snowman. He stood at 113ft tall.

The Greeks celebrate Christmas on January 7, according to the old Julian calendar, while Xmas presents are opened on New Year’s Day. Many parts of the christmas tree can actually be eaten, with the needles being a good source of vitamin c. The holly in a wreath symbolises christ’s crown of thorns while the red berries are drops of his blood. Hanging presents on trees may come from the druids who believed the tree was the giver of all good things. Jingle Bells was the first song broadcast from space when Gemini 6 astronauts Tom Stafford and Wally Schirra sang it on December 16, 1965. Astronomers believe the Star of Bethlehem, which guided the wisemen to Jesus, may have been a comet or the planet Uranus.

AVOIDING A TAXING YEAR-END Wendi Swarbrick I Love Rutland

Tax planning is about organizing your affairs to minimize or reduce your taxes payable. Taxes are one of the largest expenses Canadians face. The Tax Act as we know it imposes taxes on the income of every resident in Canada and is very complex. If you have waited until March or April to review your tax situation, you have waited too long. Take the time to review your personal tax situation with your accountant or tax consultant before the end of the year. Some of the most common year-end tax planning tips you should be aware of are: Tax-Loss Selling

Tax-loss selling involves selling investments with losses at year end to offset capital gains realized on other investments. Any capital losses that cannot be used currently may either be carried back three years or carried forward indefinitely to offset capital gains in other years. Note that if you purchased securities in a foreign currency, the gain or loss may be larger or smaller than you anticipated once you take the foreign exchange component into account. In order for your loss to be immediately available for 2013 (or one of the prior three years), the settlement must take place in 2013, which means

the trade date must be no later than December 24, 2013. Superficial loss

If you plan to repurchase a security you sold at a loss, beware of the “superficial loss” rules that apply when you sell property for a loss and buy it back within 30 days before or after the sale date. The rules apply if property is repurchased within 30 days and is still held on the 30th day by you or an “affiliated person”, including your spouse (or partner), a corporation controlled by you or your spouse, or a trust of which you or your spouse are a majority beneficiary (such as your RRSP or TFSA). Under the rules, your capital loss will be denied and added to the adjusted cost base (tax cost) of the repurchased security. That means the benefit of the capital loss can only be obtained when the repurchased security is sold. Take Dividends if possible

Consider taking dividends in 2013, where possible A corporation may distribute its after-tax income as dividends to shareholders, who then pay tax on the dividend income. An individual who receives dividends from a Canadian corporation may claim a dividend tax credit (DTC) that is meant to compensate for tax that was paid by the corporation. Two common types of dividends that an individual may

receive from a Canadian corporation are eligible dividends and noneligible dividends. Eligible dividends are paid from income that was taxed at high rates in a corporation, so these dividends are eligible for an enhanced DTC in an individual’s hands. Non-eligible dividends are paid from income that was taxed at low rates in a corporation, so a lower DTC is available to individuals for these dividends. Canadian dividends received by an individual are first “grossed-up” (increased) to determine taxable income and then a DTC is allowed to reduce taxes payable. Convert your RRSP to a RIF by age 71

If you turned age 71 in 2013, you have until December 31 to make any final contributions to your RRSP before converting it into a RRIF or registered annuity. It may be beneficial to make a one-time overcontribution to your RRSP in December before conversion if you have earned income in 2013 that will generate RRSP contribution room for 2014. While you will pay a penalty tax of 1% on the overcontribution (above the $2,000 permitted overcontribution limit) for December 2013, new RRSP room will open up on January 1, 2014 so the penalty tax will cease in January 2014. You can then choose to deduct the overcontributed amount on your 2014 (or a future year’s) return.

being accountable This may not be necessary, however, if you have a younger spouse or partner, since you can still use your contribution room after 2013 to make spousal contributions to their RRSP until the end of the year your spouse or partner turns 71. CPP Benefits

If you are between ages 60 and 64 in 2013 and are considering taking CPP pension benefits prior to age 65, you may wish to apply by December 31, 2013. If you start benefits in 2013, your pension will be reduced by a “downward monthly adjustment factor” of 0.54% for each month before age 65 that you began receiving it. Starting in 2014, however, the downward monthly adjustment factor will increase to 0.56% (and will gradually continue increasing to 0.6% by 2016), thus decreasing your CPP pension. If you start to receive CPP retirement benefits after age 65, you will receive an additional 0.7% for each month after age 65 that you begin receiving benefits, up to age 70. Retroactive benefits are available after you reach your 65th birthday but only for up to 12 months, including the month that you apply. You should, therefore, apply for benefits before the month that you turn age 71 at the very latest, to avoid missing out on payments.

growth. If you have maximized RRSP contributions in previous years, your 2013 RRSP contribution room is limited to 18% of income earned in 2012, with a maximum contribution of $23,820, less any pension adjustment.

contribution in 2014. By accelerating income and delaying deductions, you could save up to $427 of tax for each $10,000 of income that is accelerated or deductions that are deferred.

You can withdraw funds from an RRSP without tax under the Home Buyer’s Plan (up to $25,000 for firsttime home buyers) or the Lifelong Learning Plan (up to $20,000 for postsecondary education). With each plan, you must repay the funds in future annual installments, based on the year in which funds were withdrawn.

This year saw the introduction of the new Federal First-Time Donor’s Super Credit (FDSC), which was announced in the March federal budget. You can claim this credit if neither you nor your spouse or common-law partner has claimed the charitable donations tax credit in any of the five preceding tax years, from 2008 to 2012. The FDSC, which can be claimed once from the 2013 to 2017 taxation years, provides an additional 25% tax credit on total monetary donations up to $1,000 that are made after March 20, 2013. When added to the regular federal charitable donations tax credit, tax savings would be 40% for total monetary donations up to $200, and 54% for total monetary donations between $200 and $1,000. Provincial charitable donations credits are also available to increase your tax savings.

Plan for BC’s upcoming personal tax rate increase

When tax rates are expected to rise in the future, it may make sense to take advantage of existing lower rates before the increase takes effect. In British Columbia tax rates are slated to rise in 2014 for certain individuals. Affected individuals may wish to realize income in 2013 by taking steps such as selling investments with a capital gain, exercising stock options or taking bonuses, where feasible, in 2013 rather than 2014.

December 31 is the last day to make a donation and get a tax receipt for 2013. Keep in mind that many charities offer online, internet donations where an electronic tax receipt is generated and e-mailed to you instantly.

It may also make sense to defer deductible expenses until 2014 where possible. For example, you could claim a deduction for your 2013 RRSP

Although you have 60 days into the following year (2014) to make RRSP contributions for the 2013 tax year, contributions made as early as possible will maximize tax-deferred

From hectic trips to the shopping mall to the costly expenses of gift giving, the holidays can bring about many frustrations. This year, face the festivities with a few tips to help you keep things in control, giving you extra time to sit back and enjoy this special time with family and friends. Here are a few tips for a carefree, relaxed holiday: Organize your spending budget

Holiday expenses can pile up fast, especially if you haven’t set a budget for gifts. Though it may be too late to set aside a monthly allotment for your big shopping bonanza, it’s important to sit down with your family to come up with a number that won’t set your finances back well into the new year.

After you’ve made a list of all the family and friends you need to buy presents for, look over it again to ensure you haven’t missed anyone or any additional items. For instance, if purchasing popular gifts, like children’s toys and flashlights, be sure to also include a set of batteries. Many batteries have a shelf life of 10 years. Stock up on essentials

Avoid the hectic, last-minute rush by ensuring you have plenty of holiday essentials on hand. These high performing batteries are the world’s longest lasting AA and AAA batteries in high-tech devices and now hold power for up to 20 years when not in use.

Nick Aubin, Kelowna Notary Public practicing in Rutland, along with his mother Melody Aubin, retired Kelowna Notary Public, recently joined his brothers René and Andrew, along with numerous aunts, uncles and cousins, Canadian Coast Guard and Fisheries officers and crews, and dignitaries from all professions for the christening of the CCGS S. Dudka in Alberton, PEI. The CCGS S. Dudka is a Canadian Coast Guard vessel named after Ms Aubin’s father, Mr. Aubin’s gradnfather, Stanley Dudka, a decorated WW II hero and an outstanding Fisheries Officer. Mr. Dudka was decorated with the Military Medal by King George VI at Buckingham Palace after WW II for outstanding conduct in the field of battle and is well known for his dedicated work for 30 years on behalf of Fisheries Canada. Mr. Dudka passed in 2008. As the eldest daughter of 12 children, Ms. Aubin was honoured with christening the ship. Attending were the Hon. Gail Shea, Minister of National Revenue and Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and Hon. Peter MacKay, Minister of Defence on behalf of the Hon Keith Ashfield, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans.

With family, Rutland Notary Nicholas Aubin (R) and his mother celebrate the christening of a Coast Guard ship named after his grandfather.

Their speeches noted Mr. Dudka’s limitless dedication and devotion to serving Canada. As the Hon. Peter MacKay said: “I had the tremendous honour to know and spend some time with Mr. Stanley Dudka. I know with absolute certainty that Mr. Dudka is fondly remembered by the people of Pictou County, his regiment the North Nova Scotia Highlanders, and the Canadian Coast Guard for his courage, humility, selflessness and integrity.” These characteristics have transcended to the business world through two generations. service, one brother MWO Bernie Dudka, retired, having served 3 terms in Afghanistan. Speaking of her father, Ms. Aubin spoke of a man who loved Canada above all, a man who revered family, opera, symphony and gardening. She expanded on how he lived a life of principles above all else, respected his fellow man and put his faith in God. He was also a man who firmly believed that fly fishing and confession could cure any illness of the mind, body and/ or spirit. She believes, experientially, that this was good advice. The third generation, Nick Aubin is a Rutland Notary, having taken over the family business from his mother, Melody.

your stars emotions in you Cancer, your inner intellect is trying to guide you to a positive outcome, but your heart is ruling the mind. The appearance of the moon could be a sign that it is ok to heed the heart, let go of the uncertainty and trust your heart above all else. You are in the midst of making some serious decisions, at least one of which will involve the path your future takes. You must cut away anything in your life that makes you feel unsure about yourself, your life’s path is about to be offered to you. Leo

You have an abundance of strength and will always persevere Leo, so hang in there, the things you’ve done will bring you rewards. You’ve felt stuck between a rock and a hard place as they say, this will pass but may require you to forge a new path, explore your options, be imaginative, and abandon some of the old ways. Your conditioning and old and dysfunctional patterns of behaviors have resulted in the wounds of your childhood coming to the forefront, this has been a long and difficult period for you, but recent self

realization will help you put this dark side in the past where it belongs Leo, look to the light. Virgo

For you the coming month will not signify the end of the year as we know it but the beginning of a truly amazing year. This could begin with tremendous change for some Virgos or a slightly less life altering shake up of the status quo for others. Change in any form is most often positive, and you’ve entered a period of self-understanding where your inner dark places are suddenly illuminated, resulting in some unexpected connections. You find yourself filled with resolve to accept old issues and embrace the events unfolding; you are invigorated and ready Virgo. Libra

You are feeling the need to be very honest and direct in your relationships this month Libra, proceed with caution, don’t be too bold. You have felt that you are not in charge at times, this is only insecurity, and you

are much more than a spectator in your love life. You are moving into a dynamic time, you could find yourself being more proactive than usual, this is not the time for vacillating, actions speak louder than words and impulse will replace procrastination this month. It’s a time for getting things done Libra. Scorpio

Scorpio is usually the sign of the self made person, driven by a need to prove something to themselves. While you are quite powerful now, don’t lose your objectivity, during this period you are still dealing with some serious stuff. Take the time to rest, clear your mind, work on solutions and despite being in a period of high self confidence, keep your assertiveness in check Scorpio, because you can doesn’t always mean you should. your stars heightened spiritual grounding that runs all the way through you, it’s birthday time and all Sagittarians will feel like celebrating this month. Until December 21, the Sun is moving through Sagittarius, your first house of personal identity and self, creating perfect conditions for your big, trumpet-sounding debut. Birthday season is a time for reflection, yes— but also for charging ahead. Frame the rearview picture as cause for joy: look how far you have come since the beginning of 2013! And, as any Sag worth his or her visionary salt can appreciate, look how far you will go. Expansion, creativity and new frontiers are all calling your name. Capricorn

An interesting month for you Capricorn, typical for you at this time of year, you are quietly internal while at the same time filled with future oriented thoughts, longing to be out doing rather than quietly watching and waiting for this season to be over. As the sun enters your sign, always powerful and this time more so, it brings with it overtones of deep reflection and a need to reexamine current partnerships. Fortunately your creativity will extend well into the New Year and could bring the potential for significant connection with others and the empowerment needed in your life during this time Capricorn. Aquarius

The Empress – Queen

of Mother Earth will hold court over your love affairs this month, so it’s easy to see that you’ll be very happy. Your current relationships will grow and prosper and even the tiniest spark of attraction could turn into something amazing and long lasting. Enjoy every moment. Lately you’ve been feeling stuck, unappreciated and long overdue for the praise you feel you deserve. This will pass, be patient. You are on a course to find your own path by your own means, you will have some help from subtle signs and events along the way, pay attention Aquarius – your time is almost here. Pisces

You’ve been learning unpleasant lessons for what feels like a long time Pisces; you’ve even learned not to trust. However, this can be undone and someone will enter your life this month that will teach you not only to trust again but to trust in yourself, you seem to struggle with this Pisces. Your new found strength and intuition will empower you to do the things you know need to be done, whatever they may be. Rely on yourself in December, you will find the courage and ultimately the answers and the extra effort will renew and revitalize you just in time to tackle a new year. Born in December

The planet Jupiter and the sign of Sagittarius govern the month of December. You are a philosopher a natural teacher and classified in Divine

Astrology as a Truth Seekers.” You would do well in learning or teaching computers, aeronautics, law, religion, communications, radio, and language. You are also attracted to holistic healing, animals, the Indians and the world of sports. Your desire to travel to foreign lands is quite strong. Doing so will take you far away and with it the option to bring back incredible knowledge to teach the rest of us. You were born with the gift of teaching and you will always promote a form of purity and organization in life. You can do quite well in office work and you can be extremely organized. You inherited a quick mind from the stars and you can keep up with anyone willing to discuss knowledge and philosophy. You need to realize the importance of education and you must focus on your chosen goals. A word of caution: Souls born with an overbearing Jupiter energy must guard against the codification of thoughts (books) and biblical materials; your lesson is to realize that God cannot be confined to any manmade buildings, deities or any archaic doctrines. The advanced ones (truth seekers) will lead the rest of us towards the reality of God’s manifestation through the stars. Keep in mind to respect the Universal Law as your awareness and Moon planning will become a major contribution for your happiness and success.

pet health

CHRISTMAS & YOUR PETS Dr. Irene Mul Okanagan Veterinary Clinic

Christmas is a usually a happy time for everyone, but there are some dangers to be aware of for your pets. Holiday Tinsel, Lights Ornaments and Ribbons

Tinsel and decorative ribbons, while not toxic, are very attractive to pets, particularly cats. If ingested these can cause serious injury to your pet as it twists and bunches inside your pet’s intestines and can be fatal if not caught in time. Twinkling, shiny and dangling holiday lights may be lovely to look at but electrical shock may occur when a pet chomps down on an electrical cord, causing tongue lacerations and possible death. Check your holiday lights for signs of fraying or chewing and use a grounded three-prong extension cord as a safety precaution. If you have candles on display, place them out of reach. Not only can pets seriously burn themselves, but knocking over candles creates a fire hazard and may leave a trail of hot wax that will easily burn the pads of paws and more. Food Hazards

Festive events often mean that pets get to share in popular holiday goodies, of these, chocolate, poultry bones and nuts, can be extremely toxic or fatal to pets. Different types of chocolate contain

various levels of fat, caffeine and methylxanthines. In general, the darker and richer the chocolate, the higher the risk of toxicity. Ingestion can cause vomiting, diarrhea, increased urination, hyperactivity, heart arrhythmias, tremors and seizures. If you know your pet got into some chocolate, bring him/her into a vet asap to discuss the best treatment plan, Although it seems natural to give a dog a bone, Bones can also splinter and cause an obstruction or lacerations of your dog’s digestive system. Nuts, raisins and grapes can be highly toxic to your pet and can even cause acute kidney failure in some dogs. Toxic Holiday Plants

They may be pretty, but some holiday plants are poisonous—even deadly. Here are some plants to avoid: - Lily: cause acute renal failure in cats. Even minor exposures (bite on a leaf, ingestion of pollen), so all feline exposures to lilies should be considered potentially life-threatening. Cats will often vomit within a few hours after exposure. Within 24 to 72 hours

of ingestion renal failure develops, accompanied by vomiting, depression, anorexia, and dehydration. - Christmas tree pine needles, Holly, Mistletoe and Poinsettias can all produce oral irritation, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, trembling and some muscle weakness. Ice melts and antifreeze

Many brands of sidewalk ice melts are on the market. Dogs and Cats may be exposed by walking on the ice melts themselves and licking their paws or by ingesting granules brought inside on the shoes of the owner’s. Ingestion can lead to vomiting and electrolyte abnormalities. Want something safe on your own driveway, use scoopable kitty litter. Antifreeze can cause fatal kidney failure in both dogs and cats, if any ingestion is suspected contact your vet immediately. Early intervention is life saving. Be prepared… If your pet does get into any of these holiday dangers contact a veterinarian immediately for advice. Let’s keep it a Happy holiday Season!

business spotlight A pairing of Okanagan Designated Drivers and K-Town Driving Service, Kelowna Designated Drivers gets you where you need to go in the comfort of your own vehicle as quickly and hassle free as possible. Serving Kelowna since 2005, OKDD is the longest running professional designated driving service in British Columbia and one of the first services in North America. K-Town joined the fold from Calgary, bringing many years of DD experience and now have a solid track record here in the Okanagan. They are the only service in Kelowna that runs more than one vehicle and, when needed, enlists the aid of other companies (as long as they meet the OKDD standard). All of their drivers are trained to ensure your experience with them is safe and enjoyable.

KELOWNA DESIGNATED DRIVERS

According to Doug Grist of OKDD, your best bet is to call early. “Generally, we can give you a good idea of the possible wait time. If you know when you want to be picked up, and can commit to that time, then we are happy to prebook you!” Please don’t drink and drive! If Kelowna DD can’t help you, take a cab, call a sober friend or, if possible, stay overnight! Contact Kelowna Designated Drivers at 250.808.6533 or www.okdd.net Flip Flop Books is Kelowna’s newest used bookstore. They proudly opened thier doors for business in October. “ We are doing our best to offer you quality used books of all genres, from your favorite classic novels to the latest Pulitzer Prize winning non-fiction,” said proprietor Heather Friesen. “Our inventory is always growing and changing as we accept a large variety of trades. Bring in your books and see what kind of credit you can get towards your purchases.” As owner and operator Heather is passionate about reading and books in general. You can always find her at the store ready to recommend a new author or just a great read.
