want to say, “Hats off”, to the Rutland Park Society; for your huge success, with our community May Days celebration. I know from experience that they went over the top. And, from all accounts, this was the biggest one yet… Congratulations to Chris Brown and his team of dedicated volunteers for making, the 54th Rutland May Days, better than ever. Sadly, at the same time we have to say goodbye to a dear friend, co-founder Don Jack. Sadly Don passed away last month. He was able to see one of the things he was most passionate about really come to life. For those who knew Don, he was always the life of the party and the most positive person you would ever meet. His true love for life, general good spirits were infectious and no matter what happened, as long as Don was there, you could not help but smile. Sometimes to his own detriment, Don would do everything for his family and community first, putting himself last. Foremost in his life was his loving and supportive family.

It was always Don’s wish to support the community, provide it a voice, and to make sure that our youth have their best opportunities. In honour of Don and his dream, the ‘Jessica Jack Memorial Bursary’ will be contributed to through this publication and we encourage everyone else to do the same through the Rutland Branch of the Interior Savings Credit Union. Just Rosy House Of Rose Unveils Metal Rose Sculpture, Largest In Canada

T

he House of Rose Winery co-owners, Wouter van der Hall and Aura Rose, know how to dream big. They wanted to create something very special to kick off their 20th Anniversary. They envisioned a unique sculpture, reflecting and representing the winery, that would last a very long time and be very attractive and interesting to the tourists coming to Kelowna. Well they made a homerun with this rose.

Lisa Simone I Love Rutland

Roland Derks, of Middle Bench Works, was commissioned by House of Rose Winery to create a masterpiece in the design of a rose to help celebrate the success of 20 years in business. The rose was unveiled on Saturday May 25 at the winery. The rose really belongs in its new home location at 2270 Garner Road in the Rutland area of Kelowna, just off Hwy 33. The metal rose sculpture stands an impressive 20 feet, weighs over 2,000 pounds and was created with pure manpower using well over 50,000 hammer blows on the flower alone. Aura Rose explained that she first met the metal artist, Roland, three years ago at the Kelowna Farmers Market. She first noticed the sweet looking miniature roses which Roland makes to sell. Aura Rose, being the visionary that she is, inquired if Roland could make a rose as big as her. That is when it began; a dream to dream big became a reality. The chemistry between her vision and thoughts and the artist took flight. Roland said, with eyes wide with excitement and joy,

that he would love too. Thus, it started a creative, long term relationship between the artist and the Winery. First the long stem rose which she purchased, being approximately the size of real long stem rose, about 18 inches, then one 6 feet tall, then another rose of steel 8 feet tall. And all the roses are placed in the lawn of the House of Rose Winery where they truly belong. According to Wouter and Aura, it just made sense to continue along their theme of roses. The best way was for them to commission a unique rose sculpture 20 feet tall to celebrate the winery’s 20th Anniversary, one foot for each year the winery has been here. The rose is a masterpiece, very impressive and beautiful.

Make it Over Keeping it fresh, Letaya Salon & Spa creates a new look for everyone

n the heart of Uptown Rutland is a gem of a family owned and operated business which I personally have been enjoying for the past 5 years. Letaya Salon & Spa is more than a beauty salon, they operate their business the same way they live their lives: with integrity, honesty, creativity and loyalty.

Lisa Simone I Love Rutland

It all started in the Middle East where Elias and Tina were born, raised and then trained in the early eighties. Elias and his talented wife Tina have worked with top European teams and on various stages in Europe and Canada. Leanne and Yasmeen have been trained through top cosmetology schools and have worked on stages and sets for Allied Beauty Association, modeling and bridal shows. When I asked Elias what is unique about his business, with pride he gently responded, “The simple fact that we are a family, and serve families as well. We are all well experienced in our trades, we love to work with the public and we have a high level of customer service. Elias and his family moved to Kelowna at the end of 2007 then started the new business, Letaya Salon & Spa, in April 2008. He bought a house in Black Mountain and noticed a location in a new building on HWY 33 was available. He signed a lease, took it and never looked back. It has been such success. He is humble and extremely thankful, giving the wonderful Rutland people and everyone from other parts of town the full credit and a very big thank you for the huge support. Dilworth Homes, that is not the case.

It takes longer than anyone would care to admit for students to decide what they want to do with their lives after high school, but for students going through the Residential Construction Program at Rutland Senior Secondary, in partnership with Okanagan College and

Every spring for the past seven years a group of grade 11 and 12 students head out of the common classroom and onto the work site to build a home from the ground up that will eventually be sold by Dilworth Homes. As regular students, they work towards their high school diploma as well as striving to become certified level one carpenters through the ACE-IT (Accelerated Credit Enrolment in Industry Training) Program, which puts them one step ahead of the game with an Okanagan College credential. By the time graduation rolls around this spring, they will have completed their current home that is being built on Tower Ranch Golf Course, as well as having the opportunity to test for their Level 1 Carpentry Certificate. Students involved in the program are extremely enthusiastic about the doors that this opens for them after graduation. By the age of 23, they could be fully certified journeymen and “running their own show by the time they’re 27”, as their instructor Claus Gerlach puts it. When asked what they like about the program, Zac, 18, spoke enthusiastically for everyone when he said that he likes the “hands on experience compared to sitting in a classroom…benefitting from work rather than just books”. The majority of people that go through this program are employed as apprentices right after their completion and can continue to advance their certification through the legacy program that is funded by the money made from the house that they, themselves, built. “The best part is seeing their eyes open,” Gerlach says as he elaborates on students finally understanding the lessons they learned in math class making sense and playing a part in the real world. Upon speaking about the legacy and success that this program has left behind and continues to build, Gerlach emphasized that what they’re doing is much more than just carpentry. They are building life and job skills that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives, being capable of handling themselves professionally and to be able to succeed in any situation. www.iloverutland.com

estled in a most unlikely spot, a very unique building with a decidedly country flair sits. The barn shaped building on Dougal road is nothing short of eye catching, which is what A.G. Outdoor Superstore owner Randy Gasser had in mind when he built it. But not before he established himself in our community. Chase Jestley I Love Rutland

“A guy had an idea of opening a bunch of discount stores in the valley,” said Gasser. “Buying surplus and overstock items from two or three different wholesalers on the coast.” As it turned out, Gasser took the idea and ran with it on his own, opening an 800 square foot store on Rutland Road in 1973. The products they offered included army surplus clothing, equipment, jeans, camouflage clothing as well as foam rubber. As Gasser will admit, the business started there, but kept evolving. “A few years later, my sister came on board,” he said. “And she was in to camping and backpacking. So I started bringing in tents and items like that.” As the surplus industry started to dwindle, the outdoor equipment side of the business started to pick up, which caused them to realize that the original location could no longer hold their growing business. So, in 1982, they purchased the property on Dougal Road and built the building which still houses the business today. “Now it’s travel, hiking, clothing, backpacking and still camping too,” he said. What he added was that unlike some of the specialty stores, the A.G. Outdoor Superstore has the largest variety of items, such as hiking and outdoor footwear, outside of the lower mainland and in some cases more. www.iloverutland.com

with a great selection of outdoor clothing, tents, packs, canoes and most recently kayaks.

He added there were two key areas that keeps the people coming in from all over the valley. The first was the selection, and being able to offer more choices than the specialty stores yet having comparable products from the middle of the road to the high end items. The second was the staff, all of whom provide a wealth of knowledge and is dedicated to making the shopping experience an enjoyable one.

While starting in Rutland, Gasser did admit they looked at expanding outside of its Dougal Road location.

“You can buy it all here in one location,” he added. “There’s staff that knows what they’re talking about. They come to us more for specialty, yet we’ve got that variety.” With over 100 different styles of footwear alone, the store now carries clothing from such well know suppliers as The North Face, Merrell and Royal Robbins. “When my sister came on, we opened a store out in Penticton,” he said. “It didn’t really do that well, so we just kept this location.” He admitted that as time has passed, the family run business is strongly rooted in the community and they no longer think of expanding outside of their three story, 12,000 square foot location. “The longevity of it,” said Gasser. “The staff, and the selection are what makes us unique.” If the outdoors is your destination, you can find what you are looking for at the A.G. I may not go as often as I should, yet they always welcome me and provide professional pampering and great grooming services whenever I request. I have always requested an easy

I first met Elias at Olympia Greek Taverna about 5 years ago where he was providing Mediterranean music as entertainment for a special event. He is a man with many talents and a wonderfully rich history. I have enjoyed getting to know Elias, his wife Tina and their children over the years. I am glad they decided to

settle in Kelowna and open their business in the Uptown Rutland area. A few weeks ago I stated to Elias that I was ready for a fresh, new look. My daughter is getting married in June and I was ready for a makeover for the big wedding day. Elias rose to the challenge and gathered his troops for my day of spa pampering and a glamour makeover. This truly was a team challenge. I thought I was last in for a haircut at Easter but Elias, who is always on the

ball, clearly remembered it had been before Christmas. Sure enough, he was correct. For me, this was a day of total surrender and I placed my trust in his team, confident they would perform a miracle with my makeover. Elias greeted me with his always friendly smile, offered me a coffee and told me his lovely and talented wife Tina would be starting the magic of my makeover. I knew first hand that Tina was gifted with a talent for hair colour; she truly is a colour specialist. Yet, that is when the fear first hit me. I have many friends that trust their precious locks of hair to her colour transformations, however, I had to confess to Tina I was a colour virgin and this was a first for me. I decided to surrender, to trust Tina and let her commence my transformation. This was a great decision and my only regret was that I did not make the leap 5 years ago. Better late than never! Once Tina finished her colour magic I was transferred back into the trusted hands of Elias. He provided me with a cut to suit my face and personality, along with my lifestyle. He left my hair long but gave it the lift and style that

it was lacking. I could feel the magic taking place. I was feeling good, like a fresh woman with a professional, stylish haircut. I would have been happy to leave at this point but, according to Elias, my makeover was not over. I was to be handed off to a wonderful young lady, Leanne, who happens to be one of Elias and Tina’s daughters. Leanne is extremely energetic, fun, personable and professional with a creative diva side. This is where some of the fun and drama began to take place. Leanne loves her craft and she

is a natural when it comes to creative style. Out came the hair dryer, then sprays, irons, and so much back combing that I felt like I was back in the 1960’s. What was she doing to me? I had no idea, yet she held an air of total confidence in her vision for a glamour makeover creation. Once again, I had to tell myself to relax and trust that she knew what she was doing. Her vision was soon taking hold but before she was done she quickly whisked me off to her sister, Yasmeen. Yasmeen was my makeup artist.

As she gently worked away, like a painter with a canvas, she told me that some things need to be hidden while other parts should be highlighted and accentuated. Just as methodically as my makeup was applied, I was quickly whisked back into Leanne’s chair for a final touch of perfection to my makeover. Only when they were pleased with the results produced did they allow me to see. I was shocked in a most pleasant and humble form, in awe of what I saw. New! A printer to print edible pizza!

Odette Baumgartner Certified Holistic Health Counselor Odette’s Skin.Laser.Wellness Clinic

A few years ago my girlfriend told me about a printer that could print your desert or even a usable wrench if you wanted. It’s a cool concept and the

technology is amazing. (Look it up on You Tube.) It is soon to be a used method to create the most incredible meals. Type it in, press print and presto...lobster, steak, vegetarian lasagna, whatever you like. Sounds cool but where are the nutrients coming from? Like a double sided document, the printer will print your carbs then the protein, etc. in layers. I am wondering from what source is the protein, carbs, spices? Sounds pretty scary! We have enough problems getting sufficient nutrients in our diets these days without the help of printed food. Do you know that your “healthy”

plate of food may contain ingredients that your body can’t even recognize one nutrient in? Why? The food is not real. It’s GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) GMO foods are created through bioengineering and can be made from inserting genes from one species into another. Your body can’t process these foods. Heard of cellulite, arthritis, cancer, allergies and food sensitivities, inflammation etc.? How can a vegan be happy when the tomato they are eating has fish genes in it? These genetically modified combinations are

intended to enhance desired traits, dissuade pests, or withstand herbicides and pesticides used in their cultivation. Monsanto (multinational bioengineering agricultural company) also sells seeds already covered with round up to ensure weeds don’t invade the crops, the crops, however withstand the round up???!!) Our problem is that genetically engineered foods are unlabeled, so you don’t know you’re eating them. And most people are eating them every day. In fact, genetically engineered ingredients are in 75% of the foods on our supermarket shelves. This is a MAJOR reason to stick to the outside aisles of the store where foods are whole Though the FDA deems these foods “Generally Recognized as Safe,” GMOs have been linked to toxic and allergic reactions in people, and to sickness, sterility, and fatalities in livestock, insects and amphibians. They have also shown to be linked to damage to virtually every organ studied in lab animals. Ever wonder why the French are still eating white baguettes and cheese when we are advised to steer away from them? Many

European and South American countries have bans against genetically engineered foods in their regions. America doesn’t even label GMO foods as such. Canada is a bit more strict than the US with our food regulations but we are not safe. Ottawa has approved dozens of crops, most are not actually grown or sold in Canada, except for corn, canola, soybeans and the sugar beets used to produce white sugar. Products that contain any of these items, including most processed and packaged foods, likely contain genetically modified ingredients. Many meats are also affected, since animals are often fed GMO crops. You are eating these animals. You may chose to overlook all of this but really we can’t ignore the fact that in general we are getting more seriously ill earlier in life and our kids are more sick than ever. Never has the percent of allergies, asthma, infertility in people, ear infections etc. been so high. Recent stats indicate that we will out live our kids. That hits

home for me. I wont allow that for my kids or myself. There was a movie produced telling a story about the youngest person on earth, he died, he was 18. The movie was based in 2030 and women could no longer reproduce. We are really headed toward that direction... I know it seems far-fetched but really... how many people do you know that can’t have kids? You can avoid making changes if you like but understand that there will be health issues to follow. I know healthier foods can be expensive but shift one food at a time to make the change to a healthier life. It will work out. Make it your priority. You will feel better physically and mentally knowing that you are making wise choices for you, your family and the world. If you become more aware and care about the quality of food you are eating you will save money in the long run by not becoming diseased and your kids will live long enough to be parents and grandparents. What a novel concept. I would love to hear from you with your health/diet related concerns. Please email me at skin.laser.wellness@gmail.com I will answer your questions in next month’s issue or privately. Odette received her training at Integrative Nutrition in New York City. Health Issues in Senior Cats Generally speaking, the most common health problems in aging cats are related to thyroid and kidney issues.

Dr. Irene Mul Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Okanagan Veterinary Hospital

The most common thyroid problem in older cats is hyperthyroidism. The cat’s metabolism just keeps increasing to the point where the cat burns off too much body weight. If hyperthyroidism is left untreated,

heart and liver problems will occur. Hyperthyroidism can cause decreased grooming, greatly increased appetite, loss of housetraining, crying for no reason, changes in sleeping patterns, confusion, aggression, or irritability. There are four types of treatments available for hyperthyroidism: radiotherapy, surgery, medication and some cats can be managed with a special thyroid diet. Which treatment is most appropriate will depend on the particular case. Another common disease in geriatric cats is kidney failure; the most recognized sign of kidney malfunction is increased water intake and more frequent urination. In the long run weight loss, decreased appetite, dehydration and vomiting can be seen. Kidney function cannot be restored but supportive care can be very beneficial in the form of a lower protein diet, medication and supplements. Senility can affect cats, although it’s a bit more common in dogs than cats. In veterinary medicine, senility is called cognitive dysfunction syndrome and is analogous to Alzheimer’s disease in people. A cat may

pace, forget how to use the litter box, forget where the box is, or walk around disoriented or howl for no apparent reason. Hypertension (high blood pressure) is a relatively common issue in senior cats. Many diseases, such as chronic kidney failure, hyperthyroidism, Cushing’s disease and diabetes can be associated with hypertension. Hypertension can cause cats to be confused, irritable and have changes in sleeping patterns. Arthritis becomes more common as cats age, 90% of the cats older than 12 suffer from some form of arthritis. Arthritis pain in cats can cause irritability, anxious, aggression, loss of housetraining (pain when jumping in/out of the litter box), reluctance to

play, sleeping more, decreased grooming and decreased appetite. Older cats may need some assistance getting onto the bed, or into litter boxes. Ramps or footstools can provide a step up and a low instep litter box may prevent accidents in the house. Dental health issues may occur. Bad breath, tartar, and gum inflammation can be signs of tooth damage, periodontal disease, oral cancer, oral ulcers, or systemic health issues. Diet

Reliable, Consistent And Quality Service

The most critical part of preventive health care for a cat is keeping a normal weight. On average, a fat cat will have a shorter lifespan than one who has a normal weight. Geriatric cats need only about two thirds the amounts of daily calories that young adult cats do. So, if you

May Days, Volunteers, and New Horizons Apparently the festivals attendance attracted more than 30,000 this year. Hope you had a chance to take in some of the festivities.

Ron Cannan Member of Parliment Kelowna - Lake Couintry

Another amazing May Days has come and gone! I really enjoyed being part of the parade and was really impressed with the huge crowd.

A big hearty congratulations and thank you to Chris OlsonBrown and the Rutland May Day organizers for this year’s successful event. Chris has been a key organizer with the event the past few years and in charge of the annual May Day parade. Speaking with Chris, he said the past several years of leading his team of hard working volunteers

has been a labour of love. Unfortunately, due to health reasons, Chris has to step aside and is hoping that folks in the community will step up. If you are interested please send me a quick email at ron@cannan.ca Thanks Chris for your dedication and commitment to the community. You will be dearly missed! I think we can all agree that a big part of any successful event or organization is due to the commitment and support provided at the local level by community organizations and

volunteers across the country. In Rutland and all over KelownaLake Country, we are blessed with a number of top notch community organizations that work tirelessly to improve the lives of others. In fact, some of the most important are those that support and are supported by our seniors. Every day, in thousands of communities across the country, Canadian seniors are making a difference by sharing their diverse skills, knowledge and experiences with others through volunteerism and mentoring. In honour of their contribution, on May 22, the Honourable Alice Wong, Minister of State (Seniors), launched the 2013–2014 New Horizons for

Seniors Program (NHSP) call for proposals for community-based projects. Organizations may receive up to $25,000 in grant funding per year on projects that focus on one or more of the following objectives: volunteering, mentoring, expanding awareness of elder abuse, social participation and capital assistance. Any local organizations that have an idea for a project can to go to seniors.gc.ca to take advantage of this call for proposals. The deadline for applications is July 5, 2013. NHSP funding is an excellent opportunity for organizations to promote the well-being of seniors by helping them to maintain a high quality of life and continue

to be active, participating members of our community. This year alone, the Government of Canada is providing more than $33 million to support 1,750 community-based projects for seniors across the country. In fact, since its beginning, the NHSP has funded more than 12,200 projects in hundreds of communities that help foster social participation and inclusion of seniors in communities across Canada. Participation by seniors in our society is vital to the wellbeing of our communities and it is important to acknowledge the important role they play. All the best to everyone. The beautiful weather is upon us and I hope to see you out and about
