Supporting a Smokeless Ireland

The Plant CPL Fuels Ireland is investing €20 million to bring the manufacturing of smokeless coal ovoids to Foynes, County Limerick.

The plant will reinvigorate a disused Brownfield site, and is expected to commence production before the end of 2016. When fully operational the plant will produce up to 350,000 tonnes of ovoids every year using a proprietary low energy, high efficiency production method. The plant will operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Impact of the Plant The plant will create 142 jobs in production, engineering, packing, distribution, and support roles. With a requirement for approximately 80,000 tonnes of locally grown biomass per year, the plant will also support the local farming industry. The increase in raw materials imported through the port will provide a financial boost to the Port of Foynes itself.

CPL Fuels Ireland has completed a full Environmental Impact Statement and Natura Impact Statement, which have determined that the impact on the local environment from all facets of the operation will be negligible.

Impact on the Wider Community CPL Smokeless Fuels reduce particulates (smoke) by 80%*, helping to prevent 1,100 premature deaths in Ireland every year (World Health Organisation). They also reduce carbon dioxide emissions by an average of 40%*, equivalent to savings of 610,000 tonnes per year, helping Ireland to achieve its 2020 EU Carbon Emissions targets.

The increased efficiency of smokeless fuel actually reduces a users heating bill.

Using SEAI figures CPL calculated that it costs 11% less to heat a home using a Homefire product*. In addition, the intention to use locally grown biomass in CPL products will help to reduce Ireland’s dependency on imported energy sources. *Compared to Coal
