he first cook-off was put together in 1967 in Terlingua, Texas, by Carroll Shelby and several of his friends. It grew from a “good old boys” friendly competition to an event that now awards the title “World Champion” and combined prize money of more than $100,000! A little history…Carroll Shelby was the first CEO of the ICS and served in that capacity until 2004. It’s fitting that the Chili Championship Cook-Off he founded is being held at Gateway Motorsports Park, since he was a noted automotive designer, race car driver and entrepreneur. Shelby is best known as the designer of innovative high-performance racing cars, notably the Shelby Cobra and the Ford GT40. He was also responsible for the reintroduction of several Mustang-based Shelby cars. Now, back to the Chili…From October, 2017 to September, 2018, hundreds of ICS chili cooks (affectionately known as Chiliheads) from across the U.S. have been competing with their best recipes at WCCC Qualifier and Local cook-offs. Over 400 entries in Traditional Red Chili (no beans), Homestyle Chili (with beans), Chili Verde, Salsa and a special Youth Division will be at the World Championship event here, according to Scott Toland, CEO/President of ICS.There will also be a “Last Chance” Competi-

tion on Friday which the public may enter for a last chance to qualify to cook on championship weekend. That cook-off is not open to spectators – only to those wishing to cook. Check the website for details. The public is invited on Saturday and Sunday for two days of chili and beer tastings (40 specialty beers), live entertainment, vendors, a large professional and amateur 2-day Mid-West Cornhole Tournament sponsored by the American Cornhole Organization, a special Restaurant Chili Competition and a Firehouse Chili Competition. “We expect attendance to approach 15,000,” Toland said. “This may increase when the music acts are announced.” Odds are this number will grow in the future as Toland added,“We are planning for the World Championship Chili Cook-Off to be held at Gateway for years to come.” There is another aspect of ICS Chili, Inc. and the cook-offs that elevates this to much more than just a food competition. According to chilicookoff.com, “Our mission is to continuously improve and enjoy chili while raising money for charities and nonprofits year-round. Each year thousands of chiliheads hold cook-offs to raise money for hundreds of charities! Close to $100 MILLION has been raised and donated to date.” Check out the

website to see some of the nonprofits that have benefitted from these donations. As of press time, the admission fee for the public had not been determined, but parking will be $10. Tickets will be sold for chili and beer tastings. For more information, 805-351-8807, info@icschili.com, chilicookoff.com or gatewaymsp.com.

Anyone driving through Illinois has probably stopped at one of the many Tourist Information Centers along the major highways. These TICs partner with the local Tourism Bureaus and the Illinois Office of Tourism to provide brochures, Visitors Guides, rack cards, maps and other information to travelers, in addition to being a comfortable stop for a snack or restroom break. Every year, a week is set aside in May to recognize the great people who staff these rest areas and thank them for being

so helpful to us and the visitors to Illinois. Christine Sopiars, Executive Assistant at the Bureau, took her bright smile and bubbly personality to six locations. (She also took Eckert’s pies and SKI soda, but we’re sure it was her smile that made her most welcome!). Here are the folks she met with along the way. Next time you stop in, tell them ILLINOISouth says, “Hello, and thanks!”

SALUTE to ! of Salute Years 30 In today’s world, few things last very long, much less three decades. A new favorite eatery or shop closes after only a year or two; movies open in the theaters and are gone in a couple of weeks; and much-hyped “annual events” fade away after only a few seasons. So it is with much joy that we celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Midwest Salute to the Arts outdoor art festival in Fairview Heights! A visionary city government and strong volunteer spirit can be credited with the beginning and continued success of this event. According to the website, “It started more than 29 years ago when a former alderman, Gene Ellerbusch, visited the Mystic, CT Outdoor Art Festival and realized that Fairview Heights might be able to present a similar event. The City Council appointed Mrs. Billy McLemore as head of a committee to explore the possibility. The project had begun. Originally named the Midwest Salute to the Masters, the festival’s goal combined the community involvement of the Mystic show with the ultra-high standards of the Orlando, FL ‘Masters’ show. After much hard work and untold hours of planning, the first Midwest Salute to the Masters was held on October 1 & 2, 1988. It was received with both critical and popular acclaim!” Today, the show is known as the Midwest Salute to the Arts and will be held August 24 – 26 at Moody Park in Fairview Heights. Hundreds of artists from all over the U.S. apply to show and sell their work in nine media categories: Clay, Drawing/Printmaking (Graphics), Glass, Jewelry (Precious Metal), Mixed Media, Painting (Oil, Acrylics, and Watercolor), Photography, Sculpture and Fine Craft/Wood.Three judges, who are selected from the local

Arts community, narrow the entries to the final 100 artists and a few alternates. It “takes a village” to make it happen, or in this case, a city and community. More than 300 people volunteer each year, and the City of Fairview Heights is a major supporter of the event. A group of volunteers begin work on November 1 to prepare for the following August’s show, said Director Sharon Kassing. Volunteering is often a family affair. Kassing’s children began coming with her many years ago and were especially interested in choosing an original art piece at the Children’s Gallery. “My kids grew up volunteering at the show. They got to be hands-on with the artists and developed a love of art and being creative,” Kassing said. “I think that art is so important for all our children.” Although the art and artists are the main focus of the show, there are many more events to be enjoyed by all ages. In honor of the 30th Anniversary, Chesterfield, MO, artist Vesna Delevska has been commissioned to paint her vision of the festival on Friday and Sunday. She paints to music, and visitors are invited to watch the process. Arts & Crafts Demonstrations by the Artisan Guild of Southern Illinois, the Gateway East Artists Guild and the Belleville Woodcarvers will go on during the day on Saturday and Sunday, and the amazing Bubble Bus makes an appearance then, too. The Children’s Gallery still welcomes ages 5-13 so they can choose a piece of art for only $10, then visit the artist with their treasure. The Air Force Band of Mid America Mobility Brass Quintet from Scott AFB and Miss Jubilee, which plays hot jazz and blues from the 20’s and 30’s, are the featured entertainment Saturday evening and Rogers & Nienhaus perform Friday night. Great Day St. Louis will broadcast live for a “sneak peek” of the show on Friday morning. And of course, food and drink vendors will be ready to serve festival-goers during show hours. So, put on your party hat and bring family and friends to the celebration! For the full schedule of activities and festival hours, visit midwestsalute.com or Like @MidwestSalute on Facebook.

What is it about Palestine, IL? The water in the small town of Palestine, located in Crawford County on the border of Illinois and Indiana, must have creative juices in it. The Illinois Office of Tourism has recognized two businesses from Palestine for its Illinois Made program: Mullen’s Salad Dressing and Steve Meadows Folk Art. If you wonder why a locally made salad dressing made the list, ask yourself, “When was the last time I liked a condiment so much I ordered it by the case?” If you said, “Never!” then maybe you should try Mullen’s Salad Dressing. Believe it or not, they have customers living out of the area who order the dressing, glazes and sauces by the case. It’s hard to come up with a better product endorsement than that! So what’s the Mullen’s story? After serving as a cook in Europe during WWII and returning home to perfect his “French sauce” (the basis for the current Imitation French dressing), John D. Mullen opened his manufacturing and bottling plant on Main Street in Palestine in 1948. Mullen ran the profitable and fast-growing business until 1963 when it was purchased by new owners. The new corporation renamed J.D. Mullen Company retained John as a consultant and appointed Roy Shaner as General Manager. Together they worked on new products until John Mullen’s death. Since 1985, Roy, his wife Ann and their son, Jeff, co-owned the company. Today, Jeff Shaner is president and sole owner. For 70 years, the company has adhered to the rigid quality standards set by the founder, and are still making the dressings from his original secret recipes. Find them at 211-215 S. Main St., Palestine, on Facebook @mullensdressing, 618-586-2727 or mullensdressing.com. A recent Facebook video posted by ILLINOISouth Tourism after touring Mullen’s facility reached 38,669 people and generated 2,257 reactions. You might want to get your order in soon! If you’ve ever walked into an art gallery, show or studio and wondered, “how does this person’s mind work?” be sure to visit S.D. Meadows Folk Art Gallery located in a restored 1900s storefront along the Lincoln Heritage Trail in Palestine. A self-taught artist, Meadows opened his gallery 30 years ago. Originally he made mostly brightly colored and fantastic wood carvings (he has a “Patriotic Uncle Sam” cane in the Smithsonian). Fifteen years ago, Meadows’ began focusing on what he calls “Junk Art or “Recycled Art.” He refers to his shop as “A gallery outside the box. Original, one of a kind folk art pieces and a fun selection of collectable items, primitive furnishings, pot-

tery and accessories.” Using what most of us would consider trash or junk, Steve Meadows’ art pieces make statements from “Why?” to “Why Not?” The “Why” greets visitors right next to the “Historic Palestine” welcome sign. The “Why Not?” is all over town and in his gallery. There are several metal faces, a giant frog face with a pink ironing board tongue, sculptures and several more pieces in the Village Inn. One sculpture is named, “Revenue,” because he sees his art as a way to bring tourism into town. “If you have an inviting downtown area,” Meadows said, “people will want to keep coming back.” And so should you. The gallery is located at 217 S. Main St., Palestine, on Facebook or 618- 586-5242. Check out all the blogs at illinoisouth.org/blog

Museum Video a Hit!

On a recent visit to The History Museum of Monroe County, the Bureau staff made a video of their tour of the facility. Led by Norma Reheis, the tour included many of the stories behind this amazing collection. Not only does the Museum have furniture, personal items and other artifacts focusing on the county’s history, but it also includes one of the finest collections of Western memorabilia east of the Mississippi River. Several years ago, Col. Edd Kueker donated his extensive collection to the Museum Society. They raised the money for the building, which has been added onto twice. Included in Col. Kueker’s collection are hundreds of tack items, saddles, several vehicles including a covered wagon, a stagecoach and a horse-drawn surrey and even an actual general store! The store was dismantled and moved to the Museum, then reassembled all by volunteeers. The curators rotate the exhibits as many items are in storage due to space restrictions. The video was posted on Facebook and reached 4,597 people! In an email to staff on behalf of the Museum board, Reheis said, “Saw the video last week and posted a ‘Thank You.’ From the result of the video numbers….Wow, with a special ‘Thanks’ from all of us!! The video is really awesome as was the panoramic video that was posted several weeks ago.” If you missed the video, it’s available in the video section of the ILLINOISouth Tourism Facebook page. Want to go? The Museum is open Saturday & Sunday from 1:00 – 4:00 pm or by appointment. It’s located at 724 Elaine Dr., Waterloo. Call 618-939.5008, monroecountyhistorymuseum.org
