According to the 2022 Illinois crop production summary, Illinois has an average yield of 214 bushels of corn per acre. That roughly equates to a yield of 3,000 pounds of leaf and husk, and 50% of that is an available source of starches and proteins for feeding cattle. This can be one of the best practices for feed and cost efficiency on your farm. ost cattlemen across the state have already harvested, or will soon be harvesting, their corn, leaving a field of corn residue behind. Instead of plowing the field, leaving that residue for breakdown can help maintain, or even improve organic matter in the soil – potentially increasing yields for future harvests. With all the nutritional value in the remaining corn grain, husks, and the leaves, grazing cattle on this leftover residue is a major feed benefit and cost-saver. Cornstalks are yet another source of fiber and protein that is already paid for from crop production and helps prolong feeding hay or other

forages into the late fall and early winter months. With some supplementation of minerals, this grazing option can be viable till the cattle graze down to the stalks themselves. Stalks have the least nutritional value of the entire crop, so the cattle will naturally consume this part last. The stalks also contain the highest nitrate concentration in the bottom 18-24 inches, especially with the dryer season we had this last summer. Be mindful of this and watch your cattle as you look for the right time to pull them off the stalks. If you don’t have the means to graze cattle on the cornstalks themselves, consider baling them. While this may not be as cost effective as grazing on the stalks, the nutritional value and sustainability factor of it all is still in play. Or, inversely, if you don’t have cornstalks to graze cattle on, consider renting from a neighbor for the fall grazing season.
