In 2022, Illinois Beef Association launched the inaugural Beef Leadership program for members ages 22 to 40. Eight men and women are graduating from the program this spring, having completed in-person training and development sessions, farm and industry tours, and a valuable series of team building and networking events targeted at helping each participant achieve their own personal goals for leadership development on and off their operation.
The four pillar leadership program has offered development in areas of:
• Personal Leadership Development: Participants completed a personal and team assessment to discover individual motivators and communication styles.
• Relevant Messaging and Advocacy: The inaugural class learned how to curate their farm’s story and communicate it in the most effective way – with an emphasis on advocating to potential landlords, investors, customers, and public groups.
• The Business of Beef: Members got sage advice from a leading farm finance institution, heard from seasoned business professionals, and toured a multi-generational family meat business that’s been building and growing their own entrepreneurial story, all with the intention of bettering their home business operations.
• Leadership in Action: The culmination of the previous three Pillars, in Pillar IV, participants spend two days at the State Capitol meeting with ag leaders and state legislators to understand how their association and grassroots advocacy can help influence a better future for the Illinois beef industry.
The program was developed through financial support from IL Corn and IL Soybean, in a partnership with IBA staff and a thirdparty contractor who has developed leadership programs for the National FFA Officer team and several corporate agribusiness leadership programs.
IBA’s Board of Governors invested in the program and prioritized its development to help build beef leaders in our next generation throughout the entire state. Participants in the first class include men and women working in commercial cattle feeding operations, herdsmen at purebred and seedstock operations, agribusiness professionals raising cattle during their nights and weekends, and first-generation operators eager to learn more about growing their cattle business.
Applications for the 2023-24 class of the Beef Leadership program are currently being accepted at IllinoisBeef.com.
Beef Leadership Academy Applications Illinois Beef Association is now accepting applications for the ‘23-’24 Beef Leadership Academy class. This program is for beef producers ages 22-40 interested in developing their leadership skills and knowledge of the beef industry.
