Key Verse: Deuteronomy 31 :8: ′′丁he Lord himself goes before you and w川be with you川e w用never Ieave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged・′′

Key Thought: God引oving re漢ation§hip su§tains us.

As you prepare to go to a disaste「ravaged Iocation′ be aware that the Lo「d has gone before you・ His p「omise is that He wi11 be there when you ar「ive and w川accompany you in your se「vice・ He w川not faiI nor forsake you・ We need to remembe「 His promise in the midst of bad conditions and insu用cient physicai ー‖ V/-上 十esou「ces. The eiements (wind, Watety fi「e) may have suddenl become unusua=y tu「buient and seemingly out of contro Remember that the One who spoke to the wind and ca!med the waves, dispe旧ng the storm and the fea「s of His discipies′ is the same One who speaks peace to your heart and p「omises to be With you・

Jesus is the One who not only decia「ed His獲ove to us but demonstrated it for us on the cross. He exhorted us (see l 」ohn 3:16-18) to demonst「ate our love fo「 Him as we minister to our breth「en in need,

God came to walk with us fo=owing the Apr旧9th′ 1995′ bombing of the Mu「rah Federal Bu皿ng in Oklahoma City. tomadoes, floods, and fi「es are rather frequent in our state. On occasion, We may have a few inju「ies o「 even a fatalit〉I but never 169 deaths and mo「e than 400 injuries in one disaster.

1t left mostof us in a state ofshock. As trained responses to disaster automatically fe旧nto a pattem′ We began deanup′ feeding′ COunSeling′ and caring for fam帖es of victims as the needs su「faced. Assistance came from every di「ection. The most pronounced heIp came f「om God. He ministered through heIping hands, SymPathetic hearts′ and interceding praye「s. News accounts written o「 broadcast by those f「om out of the state carried stories of rescuers and fam=y members of victims who attested to God′s strength and heip in their troubIe and distress.

丁he world focused its attention on OkIahoma City and its residents for the fi「st hours after the expiosion, and it saw faith in

God demonstrated and spoken of boidiy. One New Yb「k w「iter Said′ 〃Residents spoke openly of their faith in God in terms that might be embar「assing in other parts of the country.〃

God pursues a continuing relationship with us that was both reaI and personai・ The victims of disaster that you se「ve w川need a warm hea「t and a helping hand′ a Shouiderto cry on, and an attentive ear. Remember that the strength you have is not your OWn but divineiy provided. He, the giver o佃fe itse凪is with you! He te=s you not to be dismayed, discouraged, Or dis冊sioned・

The source of Iove is our sustenance (see l 」ohn 3:1). We have been calied ′′sons of God′′ because His看ove reached out to inciude us in His fami看y. being on a mission ass-gnmentfrom the FatheりnOthing less than a wo「d f「om Him wi11 meetthe need. We need a f「esh new word from the Father. How do we hea「 from Him?

et。印h

When we await a fresh new word of direction, the love re!ationship we have with the Fathe「 determines ou「 ava=ab冊y receive an answer. It is critical to our assignment that we ke P「aye「fully cIose in communion with the Father. Many times t Jery situa土ion causing us difficu!ty hoids the answe「 to the di「ection the Father is mov-ng.

One man in our disaste「 unit c!ear看y felt the direction of the Father to be in charge of cIeaning the pots and pans fo「 a feed〇 一ng OPe「ation. Amos had a獲ways chosen this assignment and had been the best possibie worker・ He is an individual who just w川 go until he is ready to d「op. 1t just isn’t in him to take needed breaks.

On one occasion, Amos was emptying dirty dish water into the designated drain system・ This requi「ed that he carry the water around to the opposite side of the bu=ding whe「e the feeding unitwas set up. As he rounded the comer ofthe bu=ding′ he saw a young man setting on the curb nearthe d「ain. Being in the right love relationship with the Fathe号Amos pIaced the pans aside and joined the Father in add「essing the need of this young man・ tn just a few moments, Amos was able to lead this Iost individuai to receive a love relationship th「ough beIief in Christ.

Making preparation to be a usefu! volunteer on the Father′s mission of disaste「 relief is no easy task. By making ou「seives ava晶ble and using a看itt!e energy′ We Can make a旧he necessary Physica! preparations. We can enro= and compIete course afte「 COurSe and that we shouid do. Howeve' With aIi the wonderful training designed to physically respond to disaster victims, We St紺wouId not be fu=y p「epa「ed. ln fact, We WOuid lack the most essentiaI eIement to be equipped as the Fathe「 desires.

in today’s focus passages, fau! and pa「ty were on a mission Pilgrimage. They were ve「y aware of the ma「velous看y redemptive WO「k they had been doing fo「 quite some time. Even on such a mission as this, eVen With the deepest of commitment, SOmetimes it is d輸cuItto understand the w川of God. At such a time nothing short of a fresh new word from the Father w川su用ce.紺 丁hat was just exact音y what happened to fauI and his companions. When they dete「mined to take the Word of truth into Asia, they were not aiiowed ent「ance. Later they were detoured agajn. They had a Chu「ch invitation to ministry through a man f「om Macedonia Who appea看ed to them to come ove「 and give the needed assistance. God speaks by the Ho看y Spi「it through the Bibie′ P「aye+ CirCumStanCeS′ and the church to revea! Ministering to people′s needs in times of disaster requ-「eS COntinua音adjustment. No matte「 how we11 you plan, nO matter how we= you train′ disaster response w川test you「 ab亜y and W冊ngness to adjust. Where is the foundation that brings Stabi=ty and security in disaster relief?

Psalm 15 speaks ofjust such a foundation in the midst offlexib冊y. In the firstve「se, We find a hintthatthe write「 understood the necessity fo「 continua音adjustment combined with the need for stab亜y. He asked, ′‘Lord, Who may dwe旧n your tabe「nacle? Who is worthy to see the work of God, have the priv=ege of adjusting to His activity, and dwe11 temporarily with Him? The one who is WO「thy w川expe「ience both・

Ve「se two describes the qualifications of this worthy one: he

Walks uprightly works righteously and speaks truth in his heart. Once again, these qualifications refiect the need for both stab正 ity and fiexib=ity in our看ives. Notice the th「ee actions described. ′′Waiks′′ is a wo「d that means ′用ves〃 o「 ‘‘behaves.′′ It is the way We Iive our iives. ‘‘Wo「ks′′ is what we do. ′‘Speaks〃 is what we Say. Hen「y Biackaby writes in E*periencing Go句′‘lbu cannot Stay Where you are and go with God.’’1n responding to disaste号 there must be menta! and emotional adjustment, aS Weii as physica上There must be fiexib亜y.

丁he psaimist focuses on stab冊y as he describes the ways in Which we are to waIk′ WOrk′ and speak. We are to respond uprightly righteousIy and truthfuIly. These responses estab!ish the unchanging foundation of disaster re!ief.丁hey are the spiritu- 17 aI′ mO「aI′ and ethica! quaiifications of one who is worthy to dwe旧n God′s presence. fo waIk upright!y is to Iive bIameIessiy before God by fo=owing His w川and His ways. fo work righteously means ′′to be 「ight’’in our interaction with others. 丁here is good news fo「 those of us who struggIe with change and f!exib冊y. Key冊ought: God i§ Our §Ou「Ce. Disasters do happen. Many beiieve that as the end of time approaches and the second coming of」esus draws near; that disasters w川increase in frequency and seve「ity. Certainly this is evidenced by the disasters of the past few years.

Victims are affected in va「ious ways when tragedies occur. Some a「e tende「 and easy to minister to, Wh=e others a「e bitte「 and are d輸cult to approach. When we minister to the victims the「e is a need to reaIize whe「e the victims are and minister to them from their perspectives.

As you and I, aS VOlunteers, reaCh out to the victims of disasters, We muSt remember that we are responding to the needs of PeOPle in Jesus’name. Our a出tudes in disaster response must be the same as that of Jesus and our actions must ve「ify our relationship to 」esus. Gaiatians 6:2 instructs and motivates us, ′′Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you wi旧u剛the看aw of Ch「ist.’’Ybur presence, aS an OutSide person, ministers in an immediate way. It看ets the victim realize and say ‘‘someone cares fo「me.′′

丁hree areas that we need to be aware of when dealing with a disaster victim are the emotionai, Physical, and sp前tua!・

1n dealing with the emotional need, a ioving arm around the Victim o「 a caIm concemed voice w冊develop a bond of t「ust between victim and caregiver. When they know someone ca「es itw紺do a Iotforthem emotionaIly

In the physica看wor!d of mate「ia音things, the needs that are apparent can be more readiiy addressed. No matter which type unit you are t「ained for-feeding, mud-Out, Chain savy rebu=d!ng, Chiid care, Or SOme Other unit-yOu have come to meet the needs of the victims. Spiritual ministry is important because it heips te= the victims that while thei「 lives a「e in a state of fiux′ the「e is a foundation on which they can begin to build the remainder oftheir lives. DAY 3: God

Background: Ephesians 4:1-7, 1 1-13

Key Ver§e: Ephesians 4:1 2: ‘‘to prepare God’s peop看e for works of SerVice, SO that the body of Ch「ist may be bu亜up.’’

Key Thought: Godts invitation i§ gOOd・

Our joumey of faith begins with a two-in-One Characteristicthe invitation of God through 」esus Ch「ist and our response. 丁he「e are many aspects of one’s faith experience: aCknowiedgment of status, COnfession, rePentanCe, forgiveness, COmmitment. one element which shouid be foremost is the invitation of God. 1n His Son, God invites us in faith tojoin Him in His misSion of fo「giveness, 「eStOration, and reconc出ation. Through His action and our response, We become in輪ul′s words′ COWO「kers′ Partne「S With God・ The invitation is to walk and to share.

In our 」Oumey We Ciimb mountains and waIk th「ough va=eys. We have mountain top experiences and days of despair. Ou「 piIgrimage, like that of 」esus’, is one of anguish and celebration. 丁hus, in ou「 efforts to assist others, We eXPe「ience a variety of emotions. The assurance we have and the assu「ance we share with others is that God in 」esus Christtravels with us. He has not extended an invitation to us and then left us aIone. His cha看lenge is fo「 us to share Iife with him.

Occasiona=y we need to be reminded that one ofthe positive elements of God′s invitation is that it is directed to us. We shouid be past the thought that God onIy invites or caIIs ‘′fu=-time Chu「ch reiated′′ persons. The a「tificial division between clergy and iaity shouId not surface when God′s invitation is discussed・ God′s invitation is to each pe「son・ A significant issue re!ates to how best one Iives the response of faith. God invites us. ln the midst of crisis, God’s good invitation is valid・ God′s invitation aiso acknowiedges that each person has SOmething to give. The sk川o「 gift may va「y but each pe「son has SOmething to contribute. Disaster situations demand a variety of Sk用s and gifts. 1n no situation is one gift/sk=l more vaiuab!e than anothe「・ Each pe「son g一VeS What he or she is capabIe of giving. We accept, We re」O-Ce, and we praise. IndividuaI gifts merge to fuif川a mission, tO aCCOmP!ish tasks′ and to respond to hurting

PerSOnS With good news of a God of Iove.

One of the unique aspects of God’s invitation is that He asks for ou「 heIp. We emphasize strongIy a pe「son’s need fo「 God but ra「ely acknowIedge God’s need of us. In no way does the statement minimize God. Nor does the premise elevate the created to the Ieve! of the C「eato「. Jesus’pa「abie in Matthew 25川ustrates Wel音the conceptof need and heip. We are charged with an aweSOme Priviiege and responsib亜y. God needs our assistance in Orde「 fo「 His mission to be prociaimed.

A second part of God’s need is that of fel!owship. We need each other. VA need God・ God needs us. Fe=owship is c「iticai to 看ife. 」ames Weldon 」ohnson in his anthoIogy; Deap Rive左rete看ls the creation story" In the story after the physicaI universe has been created, Johnson has God saying, ′′l′m lone!y l think i′i看 冨㊧ make me a man.’’God’s invitation enab!es us to have feIIowship with Him and He with us. We are needed.

Another e!ement of God’s good invitation and ou「 acceptance Of it is that we are empowe「ed to be the God presence to othe「s. Da申y in disaster situations, We reP「eSent God to others. The Smiie, the hug′ the handshake′ the p!ate of food′ the t「ee removal, the replacement roof, the mud-Out-Whatever the action-We are the God-P「eSenCe tO hu面ng peopie. Th「ough us, God is revealed in His love, glory compassion, and power. We answer the ′′why are you here?′′ with the simple and profound ′′because God loves you and ca「es for you・’’丁h「ough us, God is P「eSent.

God’s invitation and our response. Thus, We are reminded of COmmitment, 「eSPOnSe, and acceptance・ We a「e cowo「ke「s with God. His invitation cha=enges us to go beyond ourseives with His wo「d of hope, Iife, and encou「agement. Let us not take lighト 1y the invitation no「 the response・

丁his was mos川kely one of the g「eatest lessons that disaste「 response teams have iearned. We must aIways be flexible to 輩禁書禁書嵩嵩嵩嵩誤蕊 Plan He has set in motion.

tn 2 Corinthians 5:17, We are reminded that in Christ we a「e new creatu「es. we are changed personalities that must become p-iab-e to the wili of God. How true this cha「ge is to disaster re音ief ministry. People who are suffe「ing are looking fo「 those who cannot oniy provide pe「sonal assistance′ but help them unde「stand the questions that they must face in recovery.

Perhaps verse 20 of this chapter best prepares us for what we must become. We are to be ambassadors fo「 a Savio「 who Ioves in ways we can onIy sha「e when we become a reflection of Him in a dai音y =festyIe. As a disaste「 response team membe古this p-aces an awesome responsib冊y on the way one se「ves and the Way One is seen in the disaster situation.

For aI! who have eve「 se「ved, it is common knowledge that each disaster experience -S un-que and brings its own unusuaI

demands. Our actions and reIationships are taxed by the variety of needs, the unusuai suffering of the victims′ and the overalI stress of the disaster experience. We may easiIy become so caught up in the needs around us that we push ou「seives to the Iimit. The danger then arises of being a negative rathe「 than a 捧詩誌請書聖霊霊討嵩詫霊鴇

a Iife he or she had hoped was left behind・

it is in this distress time that we must remember that as each disaster demands adjustments in response, Christians must become flexible in reiationships to thei「 work and to their fe=ow workers. In this atmosphe「e′ the true au「a of an ambassado「 must come to the surface. Fo「 in a time such as this, the refiection of Christ we present is the impact ou「 minist「y wi= have on the 45 COmmunity we serve.

As we prepa「e and respond we must constantly remember that our witness depends on our da=y waik" We must even in disaster response remember to put ou「 Bible stud)川「ayer iife′ and pe「sonal devotion as the priority preparation fo「 our service. fau! reminds us that we in Christ a「e new creatu「es.
