Paul Klee is one of those artists you can hardly classify in one movement of art history. Close to Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, he was an important member of Der Blaue Reiter, an expressionist group of painters. Later he went on to be involved in the Bauhaus and even gave painting lessons in Dessau’s school. According to him, art had nothing to do with production, but was all about making things clearly visible. In his paintings, Klee’s subtlety combined the tendencies of the beginning of the 20th century. To German Expressionism, he injected elements of Cubism and Orphism, sprinkling his works with a surrealistic and melancholic poetry. The author leads us through the marvels of Klee’s world where each brush stroke echoes the power of colors.

Gustav Klimt was born in Austria in 1862. In his early career he received a public commission to paint a series of frescoes. He received the “Gold Cross for Artistic Merit” for his Burgtheater murals. However it is to the Viennese Secession that Klimt’s name will most enduringly be linked. This revolutionary movement separated itself definitively from public, academic art. The artistic chaos which reigned in Vienna at the time made it an extraordinary place to live. The atmosphere of Klimt’s Nuda Veritas could be likened to the slow languor of Strauss’ operas or to the theatre productions of Schnitzler. His paintings and the few of his drawings which were not destroyed by fire demonstrate a sensuality of rare delicacy. For Klimt “All art is erotic”, whether expressed through the extravagant Byzantine deco-ration of his Judith I, or through pure nudity. This book brings together Klimt’s finest paintings, along with a text that demonstrates the extraordinary eclecticism of this great artist.

At the end of the 19th century Alphonse Mucha created a sensation throughout the streets of Paris with his posters representing the French actress Sarah Bernhardt. It was an overnight sensation and announced the new artistic style and its creator to the citizens of Paris, Art Nouveau. This brought fame and reputation to the poster artist. However, Mucha’s talent was never confined to lithography. Shading the world with a colorful sensuality, Mucha’s art expresses itself as much on the monumental decorative panels of a living room as on small delicate China pieces. The author enables us to discover all the richness and variety of this fin-de-siècle artist.

A jeweler with an established reputation through the world, Louis Comfort Tiffany was the spearhead of the Art Nouveau movement in the United States. At a time and in a country in perpetual growth, Tiffany succeeded in elevating the decorative to the rank of fine art. Glass was the field of expertise of Tiffany’s workshops. There they developed groundbreaking techniques of treatment which produced beautiful effects on glass. Following the examples of Gallé or Daum, Tiffany made the most of this material: playing with colors, opaqueness and transparency… However, his most famous success is his lamps in mosaic of glass, similar to the cathedral’s stained glass window. Diving into this prism of colors, the author makes us dream again of the birth of this enduring company.

In the past urban sculptures have been predominantly used to commemorate a particular historical event or figure or to enhance the image of a city. However currently contemporary urban sculpture is often utilized to illustrate the juxtaposition between art and nature. This book amalgamates urban sculptures from past and present providing the reader with a new appreciation for these impressive structures.

Recently Published A bridge is a link between two worlds, a point of tension between two separate and often disparate locations. Free, belonging neither to one region or another, the bridge imposes upon the landscape and defies nature. Its existence embodies the will of mankind to construct these necessary bonds between people and places. A symbol of progress and innovation, the bridge, anonymous demonstration of the mastery and the durability of new techniques, is gradually becoming more and more light and fluid, constantly defying state-of-the-art technology. As veritable aesthetic creations, bridges appear today not only as examples of masterful engineering, but also as incredible works of art. With its magnificent photographs, this book invites the reader to rediscover these modern-day sculptures.

A symbol of massive crowds and solitary desires, the city holds promise for all those that pass through it. Its meandering streets, unexplored neighbourhoods and incessant noise create a landscape that captivates the observer. The lights of the city can conceal or reveal it, transforming its appearance hour by hour, offering countless facets to the passer-by. While the light of morning pulls the city from its torpor and renews it for the dawning day, the nocturnal illumination plunges the pedestrian into the strangeness of its mysteries, creating a striking and ephemeral beauty. Between the shadow and the light, these original photographs reveal the fragile glow of the city, and help us rediscover the eternal pulse of these great capitals, simultaneously surprising and sublime.

Born in the Industrial Revolution, the factory has long been considered like a “monster of iron, subjugating the individual to the collective in an act of mass dehumanisation. Turning away from the pure functionality for which it was built, the factory is evolving into an aesthetic space, sometimes transformed into modern lofts or a museum of contemporary art. The surprising photographs featured in this work help us rediscover the volume, purity of line, beauty, and stunningly modern architecture of these steel-boned monuments.

978-1-84484-767-9 The lighthouse, an indefatigable watchman, ceaselessly guides boats to their ports. This beacon of maritime signalisation has guided sailors since antiquity. The first known lighthouse appeared on the island of Pharos, and was the remarkable Lighthouse of Alexandria; however, it seems that volcanoes like Stromboli and its frequent eruptions were possibly at the origin of this invention, as the fires guided boats to their shores. Faced with the increasing development of modern navigational aids, these lone sentinels do not hold the same functional importance today. However, this work emphasises not only their role as a major architectural development, but also the place that they hold in the cultural heritage of the world. From the Lighthouse of the Whales (France) to the Lighthouse at the End of the World (Tierra del Fuego, Argentina), and passing by the Lighthouse of Green Island (Canada) and the Bell Rock Lighthouse (Scotland), this work invites the reader to rediscover the richness of these witnesses of other times.

Gustav Klimt (1862-1918), was one of the most influential artists at the end of the 19th century and was the founder of the Viennese Secession movement. He used the movement to express his criticism of traditional art, which was characterised by its opposition to change and the refusal to countenance a certain vision of Modernism. Klimt took his inspiration from the slow but unstoppable decline of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the multitude of cultures from which it was composed. Klimt was an artist of great eroticism and sensuality and together with Kokoschka and Schiele, he is one of the great masters of Expressionism. This book brings together Klimt’s finest paintings, along with a text that demonstrates the extraordinary eclecticism of this great artist.

I strive and struggle against the sun… should as well paint with gold and precious stones.”

This avant-garde movement rebelled against the formalism and tradition of the official Academy of Fine Arts and proclaimed the ideals of liberty, equality and fraternity. Repin’s most powerful works expressed great psychological depth (Ivan the Terrible and His Son) and exposed tensions within the social order (Barge Haulers on the Volga) of his time. This book invites you to discover the wonderful artworks of this progressive realist painter whose work would eventually define and influence social artistic movements in the future.

Influenced by both the masters of Antiquity, the genius of Michelangelo and Baroque sculpture, notably Bernini, Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) is one of the most renowned artists in history. Though Rodin is considered a founder of modern sculpture, he did not set out to critique past classical traditions. Many of his sculptures were criticised and considered controversial because of their sensuality or realistic qualities. His most original works departed from traditional themes of mythology and allegory and embraced the human body, celebrated individualism and physicality. This book uncovers the life and career of this celebrated artist by exploring his most famous works of art such as the Gates of Hell, The Thinker and the infamous The Kiss.

Art Deco

A C NEW About the book: The Art Deco movement emerged from the ashes of the First World War, and from the remnants of a world which had been torn apart, came to embody the dreams of industry and prosperity. In the whirl of Jazz Age and the euphoria of the “Roaring Twenties”, the streamlined silhouette of the flapper was reflected in the architectural aesthetic of Art Deco: the rounded curve was conquered by the androgynous straight line. Architecture, painting, furniture, and sculpture proclaimed the preference for sharp lines and broken angles. Although ephemeral, this movement keeps on influencing contemporary design.

About the book: Vacillating between the majesty of the Greco-Byzantine heritage and the modernity forecasted by Giotto, Early Italian painting summarises the first steps that lead to the Renaissance. Trying out new mediums, those first artists left frescoes for removable panels. If the sacred faces shock us novices, this distance was more than wanted during this era and in order to emphasize the divinity of the characters, it highlighted their divinity comforted the sanctified with a background covered with gold leaves. The elegance of the line and the colour choice was combined to reinforce the symbolic choices. The half-confessed ultimate goal of the Early Italians artists was to make the invisible… visible. In this magnificent book, the author emphasizes the importance that the rivalry between the Siennese and Florentine schools played for the evolution of art history. And the reader, in the course of these forgotten masterworks, will discover how, little by little, the sacred became incarnate and more human…opening a discrete but definitive door through the use of anthropomorphism, as was cherished by the Renaissance. About the authors: Sir Joseph Archer Crowe was an English consular official and art critic, whose volumes of the History of Painting in Italy, co-written with the Italian critic Giovanni Battista Cavalcaselle (1819-1897), stand at the beginning of disciplined modern art history writing in English. With Cavalcaselle (an Italian writer and art critic), he produced several historical works on art of classic importance, notably Early Flemish Painters (London, 1857) and A New History of Painting in Italy from the Second to the Sixteenth Century (London, 1864-1871, 5 vols.).

The Fauves

A C NEW About the book: Born at the dawn of the 20th century, Fauvism burst in 1905 Salon d’Automne with a resounding scandal. It was like throwing colors at the face of the academic art entangled in its ancestral conventions. Then several artists, like Matisse, Derain or Vlaminck, searched for a new chromatic language by diverting the color from its signified. Freed from any connotation, applied in flat tints, the color, they claimed as their only standard, impregnated their stunning paintings. The author invites us to this ball of vivid and bold colors, and shows us how the violence of the Fauves left its mark on the path to modernity.

Viennese Secession

A C NEW

978-1-84484-845-4

About the book: A symbol of the approaching revolution, the Viennese Secession represented the rebellion of twenty artists against the conservative artistic academy’s oppressive influence over the city, the age, and the whole Austro-Hungarian Empire. Influenced by the Art Nouveau movement, the Secession, created in 1897 by Gustav Klimt, Carl Moll and Josef Hoffmann, was not an anonymous artistic revolution among so many others. Defining itself as a “total art”, without any political or commercial constraint, this movement represented the ideological turmoil which affected the craftsmen, architects, graphic artists and designers. Turning away from the established art and immersing themselves in the generous and decorative shapes of the organic, the artists opened themselves to an evocative, erotic aesthetic which could only serve to offend the bourgeoisie of the time. Painting, sculpture, and architecture are confronted by the author of this book, to highlight the diversity and the richness of a movement whose motto, “For each time its art, for each art it liberty” illustrates its innovation and originality.

1000 Portraits of Genius

The Book

NEW

978-1-84484-803-4

Specifications 165 x 210 mm, 6.5 x 8 in. 544 pages, about 1000 illustrations. Hardcover with dust jacket. £ 14.95 UK

$ 24.95 US

€ 19.95

About the book: According to the defined canons of art technique, a portrait should be, above all, a faithful representation of its model. However, this gallery of 1000 portraits illustrates how the genre has been transformed throughout history, and has proven itself to be much more complex than a simple imitation of reality. Beyond exhibiting the skill of the artist, the portrait must surpass the task of imitation, as just and precise as it may be, to translate both the intention of the artist as well as that of its patron, without betraying either’s wishes. Therefore, these silent witnesses, carefully selected in these pages, reveal more than faces of historic figures or anonymous subjects: they reveal a psychology more than an identity, illustrate an allegory, serve as political and religious propaganda, and embody the customs of their epochs. With its impressive number of masterpieces, biographies, and commentaries on works, this book presents and analyses different portraits, consequently exposing to the reader, and to any art lover, a reflection of the evolution of society, and above all the upheavals of a genre that, over 300 centuries of painting, has shaped the history of art. About the authors: Victoria Charles received her Ph.D. in art history. She has published extensively on art history and contributed to Art Information, an international guide to contemporary art. She is also a regular contributor to journals and magazines. Klaus H. Carl is a writer, photographer and professor. He is the author of numerous books and articles.

The Book From the early Renaissance through Baroque and Romanticism to Cubism, Surrealism, and Pop, these canonical works of Western Art span eight centuries and a vast range of subjects. Here are the sacred and the scandalous, the minimalist and the opulent, the groundbreaking and the conventional. There are paintings that captured the feeling of an era and those that signaled the beginning of a new one. Works of art that were immediately recognized for their genius, and others that were at first met with resistance. All have stood the test of time and in their own ways contribute to the dialectic on what makes a painting great, how notions of art have changed, to what degree art reflects reality, and to what degree it alters it. Taken together these great works illuminate the changing preoccupations and insights of our ancestors, and give us pause to consider which paintings from our own era will ultimately join the canon.

African Art

T C NEW About the book: African Art invites you to explore the dynamic origins of the vast artistic expressions arising from the exotic and mystifying African continent. Since the discovery of African art at the end of the nineteenth century during the colonial expositions it has been a limitless source of inspiration for artists who, over time, have perpetually recreated these artworks. The power of Sub-Saharan African art lies within its visual diversity, demonstrating the creativity of the artists who are continuing to conceptualise new stylistic forms. From Mauritania to South Africa and from the Ivory Coast to Somalia, statues, masks, jewellery, pottery and tapestries compose a variety of daily and ritual objects springing from these richly varied societies.

The Bikini-A Cultural History

About the book: It was in 1946 that the world first came to hear of a coral atoll in the Marshall Islands called Bikini. The following year, French couturier Louis Réard borrowed the name and applied it to a bathing costume for women. Breaking from decades of conformity, Réard dared to ‘undress’ women’s bodies in order to better emphasize what remained clothed - albeit in tiny wisps of material. By taking up the bikini as popular beachwear, women also found themselves thinking differently about their bodies. An ideal of perfection was reinforced by the appearance on the cinema screen of stars such as Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot and Ursula Andress, all of whom were featured in bikinis that accentuated their own curvaceous contours. More than a bathing costume, the bikini made its own contribution during the 1970s to the sexual revolution and to the changing relationship between men and women in general. This book investigates the history of the bikini and its effect on the evolution in the perception of women in society, as women regained responsibility for the way they look and laid claim once more to full sexual equality. A collection of images throughout this book illustrates this progression stepby-step over a period of more than 50 years. About the author: German and Slavic scholar, Patrik Alac has published many articles in several German fashion magazines. He published the book entitled The Language of Fashion in Roland Barthes’ Work.

The Story of Men’s Underwear

T C

NEW About the book: Men’s fashion, particularly the trends involving undergarments, was once reserved for the elite; today it has become democratised, clear proof of social progress. The aestheticism of the body so highly valued by the Greeks seems to have regained a prominent place in the masculine world. Mirroring the evolution of society’s values, the history of underwear also highlights the continuous, dancing exchange that exists between women’s styles and men’s fashion. Undergarments are concealed, flaunted, stretched or shortened, establishing a game between yesterday’s illicit and today’s chic and thereby denouncing the sense of disgrace that these simple pieces of clothing used to betray. In this work, Shaun Cole endeavours to re-establish for the first time, through well-researched socio-economic analysis, the importance of men’s underwear in the history of costume from ancient times to today. A reflection of technological progress, this study is full of surprises and powerful reflections on man’s relationship with his body.

About the book: From the Middle Ages to contemporary times, decorative art can be defined by the artistic materials, designs and objects used in both architecture and interior design. Similar to many art forms decorative art continues to evolve, originating with pieces as simple as a chair, noted for its utility, to purely ornamental objects, celebrated for their aesthetic beauty. Decorative Art aims to eulogize these often undervalued objects by giving praise to all mediums of decorative art throughout the centuries. Originally never considered as fine art, their artistic potential was not acknowledged until the twentieth century when industrial production replaced artisanal creation. The age, authenticity and above all the uniqueness of these precious objects have now become the new standards of quality and beauty found in decorative art. Join us in discovering the evolution of decorative art through this enticing survey of major masterpieces throughout time. About the author: Albert Jacquemart (1808-1875) was a writer and art historian who specialised in French ceramic art. In 1873 he published his well known book the Histoire de la céramique. He was also known to have an extensive Oriental ceramic collection and was the first to establish a specific typology that is still used today in occidental writing to describe Chinese ceramics from the Qing dynasty. After his death, his collection was bought and donated to the Musée de la Porcelaine in Limoges, France.

Paul Klee

T C NEW About the book: An emblematic figure of the early twentieth century, Paul Klee participated in the expansive avant-garde movements in Germany and Switzerland. From the vibrant Blaue Reiter movement to Surrealism at the end of the 1930s and throughout his teaching years at the Bauhaus, he attempted to capture the organic and harmonic nature of painting by alluding to other artistic mediums such as poetry, literature and above all music. While he collaborated with artists like August Macke and Alexej von Jawlensky, his most famous partnership was with the abstract expressionist, Wassily Kandinsky. This monograph by the author Eric Shanes, who has also written about Andy Warhol and Constantin Brancusi, invites the reader to discover the artistic career of this irreplaceable “painter-poet” through a collection of his most important pieces.

Universe of Style: Architecture and Furniture

T C

NEW About the book: Ever wondered why your ceiling is shaped like the arches in a gothic cathedral? Or why your office building looks so different from its neighbouring counterparts? Universe of Style invites you to explore the many different architectural and decorative interior styles from their ancient origins to the 1940s. Take a journey through history to see how the French aristocracy styled their palaces and castles to the simple designs of the Dominican monastic churches during the middle ages. Often, political changes implicate a stylistic transformation. Thus, the different European styles were frequently named after a sovereign or a historical period (Renaissance style, Medieval style). Until the end of the nineteenth century, the stylistic mutations of the time were generally based on the tastes of the royalty. Stylistic expression was, therefore, an affirmation of power.

Since the first funerary statues were placed in the first sepulchres, the ideas of death and the afterlife have always held a prominent place at the heart of the art world. An unlimited source of inspiration where artists can search for the expression of the infinite, death remains the object of numerous rich illustrations, as various as they are mysterious. The ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead, the forever sleeping statues on medieval tombs, and the Romantic and Symbolist movements of the 19th century are all evidence of the incessant interest that fuels the creation of artworks featuring themes of death and what lies beyond it. In this work, Victoria Charles analyses how art has become, through the centuries, the reflection of these interrogations linked to mankind’s fate and the hereafter.

Over the course of history, many wars have changed the political and cultural landscape of our world. While these events are defined by their upheaval and violence, they frequently contribute to the formation of the identity of entire generations or groups of people, and thus have significant cultural effects. Despite the physical and emotional destruction that occurs during these turbulent periods, they have inspired prolific artistic creation. In the wake of traumatic events over the centuries, a myriad of artists have produced works that immortalise the most dramatic moments of these wars in order to establish them in history forever. This book presents beautiful images depicting famous battles and war scenes, accompanied by the iconic text of the legendary Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu, as well as texts documenting notable moments of different wars, each written by well-known writers. From Uccello’s The Battle of San Romano to Picasso’s Guernica, this work offers a captivating look at artworks inspired by war and what they reveal about humanity’s history.

The Medici court painter Botticelli is one of the unequivocal artists of the Italian Renaissance alongside Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael. Favouring feminine portraits, Botticelli stands apart through the finesse of his lines and the unbridled sensuality of his paintings. Between religious and private commissions this Florentine artist introduced the profane into art through works of complex mythological subjects, such as the incontrovertibly masterful Primavera and The Birth of Venus, and knew how to delight the erudite patrons of art. The Madonna of the Magnificat remains one of the most beautiful examples of the Virgin ever achieved. Between the delicacy of the Renaissance and the exuberance of Mannerism, the richness and refinement of the works of Botticelli delight today more than ever.

As a one of the foremost painters of the 20th century, Dalí, like Picasso and Warhol, can boast of having overturned the art of the previous century and directed contemporary art toward its present incarnation. As irrational as he was surrealist, this genius diverted objects from their original meanings, plunging them into the acid of his constantly churning imagination. On his canvases, images and colours crash together to express and mock certain ideas, creating a subversive eroticism that taps into the subconscious of the avid voyeurs that we are. The author, Eric Shanes, explores the twists and turns of Dalí’s mad genius, commenting on the masterpieces of the painter so as to show the diversity and scope of his talent, leaving the reader blown away and bewitched by this Prince of Metamorphosis. This work opens up the sweet, mad universe of this megalomaniac genius and invites us to let ourselves be overcome … Dalí is, first and foremost, an absolute.

Since the dawn of Christianity, artists have been fascinated and stirred by the figure of Christ. His likeness appears in frescoes on the walls of catacombs that date from Roman times; he is featured in the stained glass windows of Gothic churches; and he can be found in various forms in today’s pop culture. Whether they show the spirituality of God Incarnate or the earthly characteristics of a flesh-and-blood man, artistic depictions of Christ are the most controversial, moving or inspirational examples of religious art. This richly illustrated book explores the various ways that Christ is rendered in art, from Cimabue’s Nativity scenes and Fra Angelico’s paintings of the Crucifixion to the provocative portraits of Salvador Dalí and Andres Serrano. Author Ernest Renan guides the reader through the most iconic representations of Christ in art — tender or graphic, classical or bizarre, these images of the Messiah reveal the diverse roles of the Son of God in the social milieus and personal lives of the artists.

Friedrich Stowasser (1928, Vienna - 2000, New Zealand), better known by the name of Friedensreich Hundertwasser, was a painter, thinker, and architect, or rather a “doctor of architecture,” as he declared in his manifesto of the 24th of January 1990. His architectural creations, organic and full of imagination, may have been influenced by the works of Antoni Gaudí. Yet, Hundertwasser was more radical in his philosophy. As expressed in his remarkable eco-artistic manifestos, and other achievements (paintings, posters, stamps, houses, and architectural designs), his message remains profoundly and viscerally ecological. His pictorial work is characterised by an organic abundance of forms and by the brilliance of its colours. Hundertwasser is an artist who is difficult to classify. With his tremendous love of nature, he is one of the pioneers of humanist and environmentalist architecture, which attempted to reconcile creativity and ecology. This vision has been shared by many young artists all over the world and by the founders of eco-villages.

978-1-84484-840-9

After serving for a long time as a backdrop for paintings and as a skill-practising exercise for artists, nature came to be observed for its own sake and was incorporated into works of art as an illustration of an enlightened and scientific study of the world. Through continual change, it has inspired the greatest painters and has allowed some others, like Turner, to transcend the relentless search for mere realism in pictorial representation. Through this study, Émile Michel offers an exceptional panorama, from the 15th century to the present, of art and the way artists portray the world in all its splendour.

In art history, the term Romanesque art refers to the period between the beginning of the eleventh and the end of the twelfth century. This era was characterised by a great diversity of regional schools, each practising their own unique style. In architecture as well as in sculpture, Romanesque art is marked by raw forms. Through its rich iconography and captivating text, this work endeavours to restore the importance of this art which is often overshadowed by the later Gothic style.

978-1-906981-01-3

Gothic art is defined by the powerful architecture of the cathedrals of northern France. It is a medieval art movement that evolved throughout Europe for more than 200 years. Abandoning curved Roman forms, the architects started using flying buttresses and pointed arches to open cathedrals to daylight. A period of great economic and social change, the Gothic era incorporated new iconography celebrating the Holy Mary- a drastic contrast to the dismal themes of Roman times. Full of rich changes in all of the various art forms (architecture, sculpture, painting, etc.), Gothic art gave way to the Italian Renaissance and International Gothic.

About the book: “Studying nature with passion, and all the independence proper to his character, he could not fail to combine precision with liberty, and truth with beauty. It is in this final emancipation, this perfect mastery of modelling, of illumination, and of expression, this breadth and freedom, that the master’s raison d’être and glory consist. Others may have struck out new paths also; but none travelled further or mounted higher than he.” About the author: Eugène Müntz (1845-1902) was a member of the Institut de France and curator of the collections Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and has been one most influential specialists on the Italian Renaissance. He wrote profusely on the great masters of the Renaissance such as Michelangelo. His insightful study of da Vinci’s works remains a most complete and universal reference today.

The Biblical Saviour is not a static, immaterial deity: Christ’s mortal birth, unusual life and dramatic death make him an accessible subject for religious and secular artists alike. Author Joseph Lewis French guides the reader through the most iconic representations of Christ in art — tender or graphic, classical or bizarre, these images of the Messiah reveal the diverse roles of the Son of God in the social milieus and personal lives of the artists.

The art world is filled with the presence of the Virgin Mary – a fundamental symbol of motherhood, who has been radiating youthfulness, tenderness and compassion for two thousand years. Finding in her an inexhaustible source of inspiration, artists have consistently used the image of the Virgin Mary to reflect our own sufferings and joys. The author Kyra Belán leads us on a comprehensive tour analysing the profound meaning to be found in the images of the Virgin – from personal interpretations to spiritual reflections on a universal level. These works of art present a fascinating visual commentary on the evolution of Western art as well as a striking record of the rise in status of women in society. With more than 200 illustrations, two thousand years of human history are expressed in a single image; that of the Blessed Virgin, Christ’s mother.

About the authors: Élie Faure (1873-1937) was an art historian, essayist, and the author of a monumental History of Art that remains a world reference on the subject to this day. Founder of art criticism in France, Faure has been compared to Baudelaire and Malraux for his lyrical writing style and profound insights into his subject matter. Obliterating cultural and generational barriers in his writing, he extended the poetic treatment of art and shed light on all forms of creative expression. Adolf Rosenberg (1850-1906) was a German art historian and one of the most prolific authors of his times. He was a specialist of the Renaissance, publishing numerous books on Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael, but his passion was also shared by the artists of the countries of northern Europe such as the Ostade family, Terborch and Steen. A great art history theorist, Rosenberg was a great teacher as well, writing a series of art histories for students. Victoria Charles received her Ph.D. in art history. She has published extensively on art history and has contributed to Art Information, an international guide to contemporary art. She is a regular contributor to journal and magazines. She has also contributed to a collective work, 1000 Paintings of Genius. Klaus H. Carl is a writer, photographer and professor. He is the author of numerous books and articles. For many years, Dr. Dorothea Eimert has been in charge of the Leopold Hoesch Museum in Düren, Germany. After studying art history, musicology, archeology and phonetics, she specialised in twentieth century art. She publishes extensively on many subjects such as Expressionism, Futurism, New Objectivity, Concret Art, Paper Art and contemporary art.
