TERM II 2016

Headmaster the tests have importance beyond checking on how they are progressing – they are not HSC examinations. The tests are designed to help their teachers help them learn. They are not a measure of their academic ability. The Great Fete is just two weeks away and the storage container in the Powell Street car park is filling with goods and books for sale at this great school event. The P&F are still looking for people who can assist on the day, even if for just an hour or two. Please register online to volunteer on Fete day here. (If you haven’t previously used the system you will need to register first)

Stephen Kinsella Headmaster

There is certainly a lot to look forward to in Term II. NAPLAN testing will occur on 10, 11 and 12 May for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It is unfortunate that these tests have taken on such significance in the eyes of the media and some parents. NAPLAN tests were designed to provide diagnostic information to teachers about the strengths and weaknesses of their students. It is astonishing that a whole industry of tutors and authors has emerged to ‘prepare’ children for NAPLAN testing. It is even more astonishing that sections of the media attempt to construct league tables that purport to rank schools on the basis of NAPLAN results. Parents should advise their children to do their best in the NAPLAN tests. They should not explicitly or implicitly create within children the impression that

This year the funds from the Great Fete are to be used to provide some shelter for students waiting for buses and pickup in the car line on Drummond Drive at the lower end of the campus. This project has already received some funds allocated from previous P&F events and its installation later this year will be a welcome addition to our campus. Preparation for this year’s Senior School production, The Wizard of Oz, is well underway and will culminate in performances to be held between 22 and 25 June. The production is always a highlight of our calendar and displays the tremendous talent of both our students and staff. TIGS always sets the standard high and this year’s performances are sure to match the wonderful performances of recent years which include Beauty and the Beast, The Secret Garden, Cats and West Side Story. Typically these productions involve about one quarter of the students in the Senior School with students involved on-stage, in the orchestra, backstage, front of house, wardrobe and make-up, set construction and technical support with sound and lighting. Students value the support of their peers and families shown by their attendance. I hope our whole community will attend and

support our students this year. Tickets can be booked at here. By the end of the Term, students in Year 10 will have made their choices regarding their study in Years 11 and 12. This will be the first cohort that has the choice of studying our successful HSC programme or the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (DP). Both programmes are equally supported by the School and our teachers may be allocated classes in both programmes. Students will be able to choose the course of study that suits their approach to learning. A number of information evenings have been held regarding the DP. This has been with the intention of informing our students and their families about this programme because it is new to our school. Between now and the end of term students will be assisted by staff in choosing the course of study and the subjects within that course that suits their ability and ambitions. There will also be two final information sessions held: 21 June Focus on the DP 27 June Focus on the HSC The choice between the DP and the HSC provides an advantage to our students only available at 12 other schools in NSW, including Kambala, MLC, Monte Sant’ Angelo, Newington, Penrith Anglican College, Queenwood School for Girls, Ravenswood School for Girls, Montessori, Redlands, St Andrew’s Cathedral School, St Paul’s Grammar School and Trinity Grammar. I wish everyone a successful Term II. Stephen Kinsella Headmaster

Chaplain’s Message A RIGHT RESPONSE In Week 1 this term we honoured our servicemen and women in ANZAC services in both the Junior and Senior Schools. I was thrilled to observe our students giving due respect to those who have given themselves to secure the quality of life we enjoy in Australia. As I was contemplating ANZAC Day this year the film Saving Private Ryan came to mind. It is a fictional story set in the Second World War with some loose links to real events. The film begins with an elderly man – James Ryan - and his family visiting a war cemetery. He finds the grave of John H Millar. Upon finding this grave, he falls to his knees overwhelmed by emotion. The film then takes us back - into the heart of WWII - so we can understand Ryan’s grief. Private James Ryan had been saved by John Millar from likely death during the war. Millar had been told to go in search of Private Ryan and bring him home after news came in that his three brothers had died in combat. The US government didn’t want to deprive Ryan’s mother of all her four children. It was Millar’s mission to ensure that Private Ryan was brought safely home. Millar found Ryan and got him out of the war but in doing so lost his own life. Private James Ryan was there at his death and heard the final

words of Millar to him: “James, earn this. Earn it.” Fast forward now to the final scene of the film. We return to Private James Ryan at the grave of John Millar. He is not too sure he had earned it. He was horrified at the thought that he hadn’t - try as he had. In trepidation, he turns to his wife and says: “Tell me I have led a good life. Tell me I am a good man.” There are obvious comparisons between ANZAC Day and the Christian faith. Jesus dies to secure our freedom – freedom from the penalty and power of sin in our lives. He invites us to receive the gift of freedom from the tyranny of sin and death through faith. It is a great gift secured for us by a great sacrifice, but I am so thankful that Jesus doesn’t tell us we need to earn it. That would be impossible and leave us with the same uncertainty as Private Ryan. How could we earn such a sacrifice? How could we even know if we were getting close? No, Jesus doesn’t tell us to earn it. But there is something he does tell us to do. In Philippians 1.27 we are told to “conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.” What that means is that we are to live our lives with the same other-person-centred

Rev James Rogers Chaplain love as Jesus. Not so we can earn what he has done for us – that would be impossible - but out of gratitude for what he has done for us. That’s a recipe for joyful, courageous living, secure in the knowledge and love of God.

Rev James Rogers

Junior School CHANGES TO THE CAR PARK Parents will have noticed some changes to our car park upon return to school for Term II. The intention is to fit more cars into the car line for afternoon dismissal and reduce our impact on the Princes Highway. I did notice last week that many parents were queued up in the car line at 3.00pm which resulted in multiple loops for many of you waiting for the older children to come out. Please remember that only Kindergarten parents should be in car line at 3.00pm and that all other parents should plan to arrive at or after 3.10pm. This allows us to spread the congestion.

Judi Nealy Deputy Headmaster, Head of Junior School

DIARY DATES

Piper Centre parents are requested to please take care when parking for drop off and pick up and to please ensure that there is sufficient walking space for parents and young children along the fence line. All parents will have noticed a new “stacked” car parking area that has been reserved for staff only. Please assist us by not parking in these spaces even for a short time. It’s Fete time!

We are starting to get excited about the fete in the Junior School. Please make sure you have checked the performance schedules so you know Saturday 21 May when to have the children ready to TIGS Great Fete perform and also to know when you are available to volunteer. We are aware that our families have many commitments in addition to their school ones, however I encourage all families to make attendance at the Fete a priority. This is a great opportunity to build community by Darcy Cross having fun together and to show each other and the Illawarra some of the Brandon Nugara great stuff happening at our School. Thank you to the fathers who organised this event and worked so hard to make it a success. To our Mums, we hope you felt loved and appreciated and we hope you have a wonderful Mother’s Day on Sunday.

Senior School STUDENT WELLBEING

I have written in past newsletters about the progress that is being made at TIGS to explicitly teach skills to students with the aim of enhancing their wellbeing. I can now report that in the Senior School, the Student Wellbeing Programme is being taught in Year 7 through to Year 10.

Greg Lanyon Head of Senior School

The reason why the School has made such a commitment of resources, is because research clearly indicates that there is a reciprocal link between effective learning and student wellbeing. Put simply, students learn best and flourish when they feel good about themselves. The research also indicates that there is a strong link between connectedness to a school and student wellbeing. This construct has been measured in many studies on adolescent wellbeing using questions which tap into this concept, such as: ‘I feel like I am part of this school’, ‘teachers at this school treat students fairly’, and ‘I feel safe in my school’. At TIGS, developing a sense of connectedness for all students is a key goal both within the classroom and through offering a wide range of school based and co-curricular activities. The combination of explicitly teaching wellbeing and developing multiple points of connection for students, provides a solid platform for student to achieve their academic potential and to minimise the risk factors related

to both physical and mental health problems in this difficult stage of development. The Student Wellbeing Programme is informed by principles of positive psychology and has an overall aim of enhancing the social, emotional, moral and spiritual development of every student. As well, the programme aims to offer meaningful, life-changing experiences to assist students grow in their relationship with God; grow in their understanding and acceptance of themselves and others as God’s image-bearers; and grow in their engagement with the world. The PERMA model is devised to address the five core aspects of our humanity that contribute to our personal health and wellbeing (our optimal self). These core aspects are: feeling Positive emotion, Engagement in our current situation, living in healthy Relationships, living with purpose and Meaning, and achieving Accomplishments by mastery over challenges or mastering new skills and situations. The Programme has also provided the opportunity to explore and explicitly teach skills in areas such as cyber-safety, individual strengths, friendships, organisational skills, conflict resolution and developing positive relationships.

YEAR 7 AND 8 ASSESSMENT INFORMATION EVENING Year 7 and 8 Assessment Information Evening to be held on Thursday 12 May in the Goodhew Research Centre at 5.30pm.

AUSTRALIAN BRAIN BEE CHALLENGE The Australian Brain Bee Challenge (ABBC) is a competition for high school students in Year 10 to learn about the brain and its functions, learn about neuroscience research, to find out about careers in neuroscience and to dispel misconceptions about neurological and mental illnesses. The first stage of this competition was an online quiz addressing a comprehensive stimulus booklet. The subject matter is, by its very nature, challenging as it deals with current research into neuroscience. Two Year 10 students, Risini Gamage and Alex Santos have qualified for the second round of the Brain Bee Challenge in the Individual Challenge to be held at School of Medicine, University of Western Sydney, Campbelltown campus in August. These students are to be congratulated on their achievement and we wish them luck in the next stage of the competition. Glen Stutchbury Science Teacher

Our year group sees the 18.4 per cent of Illawarra young people aged 15 to 24 that are unemployed, to be a substantial issue affecting our community. Youth unemployment in the Illawarra, which is well above the national average of 12.6 per cent, plays a key role in facilitating the welfare cycle and relative poverty in our area, leading to problems such as domestic violence, drug abuse and poor school retention rates. Our chosen charity for this year is CareSouth, which is a locally run non-profit organisation that mainly aims to combat these issues threatening our community. By joining us for an enjoyable evening on Friday 27 May you will be helping to create a positive future for children, young people, families, individuals and the local community.
