PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Parents, Staff and Students, Assalamu Alaikum Alhamdulillah, we are nearing the successful completion of Term 2 at Ilim College. Congratulations to all students involved in recent examinations and major assessment tasks. The past few weeks have been extremely busy with Semester one exams for years 9, 10 and 11 students. Year-12 VCE students are set for the mid-year VCE exams and GAT as part of the VCAA examination period. I wish students well as they undertake this important assessment task. Many thanks to Mr Fadi Koubar VCE Coordinator who coordinated this process in such a smooth manner. Year-10 students have already started to undertake Work Experience for the last two weeks of term-2. This is a huge logistical process and I thank Mrs Sonia Koubar for her hard work in ensuring every student in year-10 has a work experience placement. I would like to inform you that Primary and Secondary Semester-1 Reports will be distributed to parents on Friday, June 18th 2010 between 9:30am and 6:00pm. Please make sure to come and collect your child’s reports and speak to teachers. I ask all parents to attend this important day. I am happy to inform you that the construction of Science and Language Centre will be completed by the end of term-3. We are planning to commence the building of the Multi-purpose Assembly Hall in June 2010. As you see, we have been working a lot harder to get Ilim College to a distinguished, reputable private school level, which will offer excellent education in all areas. An important reminder to the parents that enrolments for 2011 are now being accepted. We have limited places for all year levels, please apply at the College office if you would like to enrol your child or know of interested people. During the school holidays, I advise all students to relax and complete 30 minutes of holiday homework for all subjects given by teachers. I would like to inform you that Ilim College office will be open during the first two weeks of the school holiday between 9:00am to 4:00pm. The last week of the holiday (5-9 July) College office will be closed. If parents have any enquires, they may feel free to contact us between the specified hours.

Yarrabee - Yesterday’s World In completion of our inquiry unit “Then and Now,” we were very fortunate to attend two contradicting and fascinating excursions insightful of the lives of the middle and upper class Australian families in the olden days. Our first excursion was at “Yarrabee – Yesterday’s World,” where we explored the life of the middle class Australian’s in their homes and school. We first got dressed up in the olden day outfits from home. As we got there we had to line up in an arm distance apart in girls and boys line and had an assembly where the lads took of their hats while we saluted the Australian flag. Then we split up into two groups and went into the olden day school and house. As we entered the school we took our shoes off and sat in our odd wooden desks. We had to call the teacher “Ma’am”

and she was very strict, as soon as a student misbehaved she drew a cross on the blackboard and made them put their nose on it. There was no electric bell as we do today so the teacher chose a bell monitor to ring the bell from outside. After we had our snack we went into the olden house that had no electricity. We saw lots of things people used in the olden days like iron stoves, gas lamps, candles, and a potty under the bed. It was a hard life where everything had to be made by hand. In the end we learned some interesting olden day games and we had lots of fun! Our second excursion was held at “The Como House,” as we explored the prestigious life of the upper class Australians who had servants to do everything. It was interesting to see that they had about 15 different bells

to call their servants upon. They had expensive and fancy furniture imported from Europe especially France and therefore we were not allowed to touch anything. The last family that lived there had ten children that did not need to go to school like the middle class because they had homeschooling by their nannies. The house was huge and had lots of rooms and the garden was also very large with very old trees imported from many countries. In the garden there was a well that servants used to fetch water and a garden patch where they grew their own vegetables. The whole experience was a deluxe!! We enjoyed both of our excursions and learned a lot about the olden days and appreciate what we have today! Ms Selver Demirlek

LOST One Saturday, Kevin was going to the shopping centre, to buy some food. When he arrived he went into Aldi with his mum and dad. As they were going into the shops, his mum said to him to be on his best behaviour and stay close to her. But as they went in wondered off looking at toys and began day dreaming, he was on a pirate ship and that he was the captain. He wore a red spotted pirate patch, a blue shirt, black pants and old black worn out shoes. In his daydream they were about to set sail to hunt a hidden treasure chest. As he was daydreaming and playing with the toy ships, he didn’t know that his mum

Melbourne Museum On Monday the 3rd of May we went to the Melbourne Museum. When we went into the bus I sat next to Zachariah and Mustafa, we talked about soccer and football. When we arrived at the Melbourne Museum we were earlier than the other two classes so we decided to have a little snack, and take some photos. When the two classes finally arrived we decided to go into the museum. When we went into the museum

COMO HOUSE On Thursday the 29th of May the grade 2s went to the Como House. Como house is a historical olden day’s house which was built in the late 18th century. We played detectives where we were shown olden day items and guess what they were used for. Then we went into the house and looked for these items. We also noticed that the house was very big and had lots of things from the olden days.

On the weekend at the park, Lili was happy playing. She loved sliding down the purple slide. Then she saw something colourful with black strips on her nose. It was one of the best butterflies she had ever seen. She started following the butterflies and it took her into the forest, she was lost. There were so many borrow and trees. She stopped running and looked around, she felt really scared. She thought she would never see her family again. Suddenly, she heard footsteps, then she saw it, it was furry and had green eyes. It was a kind rabbit. The kind rabbit went to Lili. Lili asked him “Do you know where my cottage is?” The rabbit replied “Yes”. So he showed her the way home. By Rayhaan Naaman 3C

First, we went to Fitzroy Gardens. Then we went to Cooks Cottage. We were in Cooks garden and we looked at his statue. It was cool!

After that we went to the wild animals section it was really fascinating I even saw a little fake lizard on the ground. Finally the excursion was over and we had to go back to school.

Their was a toilet at the back of the garden, a medicine leaf, fragrance and food. It was built on the year 1755. We looked at Cooks miniature ship. It was called Endeavour.

Private Screening of ‘Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang’ and Pizza for Lunch

As the team of grade 5 teachers, Ms Rukiye, Ms Noorani and Ms Derya, we had organised a recreational excursion to help our students rewind and relax after the NAPLAN and Reporting Assessment which had taken place this term. As a ‘thank-you’ and show of our appreciation for all their hard work and effort, the grade 5 teachers had organised for the students to attend a private screening of Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang at Hoyts Broadmeadows. Straight after the movie session the students came back to school and had pizza for lunch. Finally, we ended our stress-free and fun-filled day with some skipping and ball games. All in all, the excursion was a big success! As the grade 5 teachers, we would like to thank all our students for their cooperation and good manners throughout the day. Important Reminders from Secondary School FIT TO DRIVE PROGRAM

Study Vacation for VCE Students Undertaking a June Exam The year 11 students participated in the FIT to drive program at our college on Tuesday 27 April 2010. The program educates students about safe driving and consequences to irrational driving. The messages relayed by the members of the police force, the fire brigade and Hume City Council were received well by our students. We pray to Allah that our students grow up to become wise users of our roads.

Here is part of an email we received from Claire Priestley, the organiser of the FIT to drive. My team and I would like to thank-you and your staff for your lovely hospitality and organisation on Tuesday. We really enjoyed running the Fit to Drive program at Ilim College. Your students were a pleasure to work with and the feedback that we have attained via the evaluation forms has been extremely positive. We look forward to implementing the program at your school again next year. Can you please thank your students. Included are some quotes from our students

Student’s Quotes: “I learnt SO much about saying no to drugs, alcohol, persuading others to say no and the statistics on dangerous drivers.” F16 “Make smart choices.” M16 “Do not give in to peer pressure.” F16 “This program was very helpful and I have learned a lot. I will take this as an example in my life. Thankyou for everything!” F17

All year 12 students and students from year 11 that are undertaking a unit 3&4 mid exams will have a study vacation from Wednesday 2 June to Monday 7 June 2010. All other students must attend school as usual. During the exam days, students need to arrive to school at least half an hour early and must bring all required resources for the exams as stipulated in the Exam Navigator. Students will be permitted to go home after their exam as there will be no classes. We wish our students all the best for these important exams.

BUILDING BRIDGES Our year 10 students are currently involved in a program called Building Bridges. Students from Strathmore Secondary College, St Bernard (Essendon), St Columba College (Essendon) and Ilim College will meet five times during term 2 and 3 to build bridges of friendships through learning key skills of dialogue and sharing personal experiences that shaped them. Understanding differences and commonalities is a key element in living harmoniously in this country. Students should be taught the ideals and values of respect and tolerance as prescribed by our Prophet (PBUH).

“[I learnt] How dangerous it can be to drink and drive and that On Tuesday 25 May 2010, Ilim we should always go with the laws as it is for our own good and College hosted about fifty students safety.” F17 from different religious and cultural “It was helpful and fun. It makes us want to learn and understand.” F16 “I enjoyed it very much. It was worthwhile and it will last with me long after this day.” M16 “Think twice before committing something that is life threatening.” M16 “If you are driving with a bunch of mates, know that it’s your responsibility to drive safely.” F17

GRADES 5 & 6 CANBERRA CAMP Ilim College Grade 5/6 students undertook a fantastic 4 day camp between 19th – 22nd April, 2010. Students took part in an educational tour of the national capital and participated in a variety of educational programs focused on civics and citizenship. Our visits included Parliament House, Australian War Memorial, Mount Ainslie, Canberra Mosque, Electoral Education Centre, Embassies of Turkey and Lebanon, Pakistani High Commission, Royal Australian Mint, The National Museum and Lake Burley Griffin. Students participated in many stimulating educational activities and extended their knowledge about Australian political, government and legal systems. They examined the role of the government in representing the people, the key tasks of members of parliament, how parliament makes laws, how an election is held and how people vote during an election. We were warmly welcomed at the Turkish and Lebanese embassies

and the Pakistani High Commission and our students listened to some inspiring speeches delivered by the ambassadors, high commissioner and the ambassador’s assistants and secretaries. They were very kind in organising some light refreshments, which was greatly appreciated by our students and staff. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit their National Capital as part of the civics and citizenship education. To assist parents in meeting the cost of the excursion, The Australian Government contributed funding under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) programme toward the travel expenses incurred. ($30 rebate per student). Also, the school board was very generous in contributing a further $30. This enabled parents to pay only $270, otherwise the cost of the camp will have been well over $300. We would like to thank the Australian Government for their support of this

program and the Ilim College School Board for the subsidy. I would like to thank Mr. Nadeem Iftihkar, Ms. Derya Buyukyazici and Mrs. Noorani Ishak for attending the camp and for their great dedication and hard work in making this Canberra Camp a very rewarding and successful one that will be remembered by our students for a very long time. I’d also like to thank The School Board, Principal, Mr. Yusuf Kirca, Vice Principal, Ms. Aynur Simsirel for their support and contributions and other staff members who have contributed in any way. Thank you to our parents for allowing their children to attend the camp as well as our wonderful students for their good behaviour and wonderful sense of humours! HUMANITIES ‘Our Visit to the Australian War Memorial, Canberra’ During the 7/8 girls’ Canberra Camp, we went to many exciting new places. One of the places we visited was the Australian War Memorial directly opposite Parliament House. The Australian War Memorial combines a shrine, a world-class museum, and an extensive archive. The Memorial's purpose is to commemorate the sacrifice of those Australians who have died in war. Its mission is to assist Australians to remember, interpret and understand the Australian experience of war and its enduring impact on Australian society.

Throughout our tour one of the most beautiful places we were taken to was the archive in which all the names of soldiers who went to war were engraved into the wall. Next to each soldier’s name, a small space enough for a red poppy, was present. Almost all the walls in the archive were filled with red poppies.

Not just in the Gallipoli war but in all the wars our soldiers go to, they are fighting for our freedom. Going to war is almost like sentencing yourself to death. In war, there is always the risk of getting killed and all the Australian soldiers leave their families knowing about this risk and go to war just for the Australian people’s freedom.

Standing in the archive looking at all the names of soldiers just gives you a reminder that all of the Australian soldiers go to war just to fight for the freedom of the Australian people.

The war memorial honours those who served Australia in the war and helps us remember what they did. By: Alisha Rawal 7C

Year 7 ORIENTEERING EXCURSION ‘ Westerfolds Park’

It was a perfectly sunny day on Wednesday 17 March and everyone looked excited. Today was the day we, the Year 7’s, were going on their first excursion of the year to Westerfolds Park, Templestowe. The excursion was organised for Humanities, as we were studying Geospatial Skills. Once were arrived at the park, we were split into two groups, the girls and the boys. The instructors, Ms Peta and Mr. Carl from ‘Orienteering Victoria’, gave us instructions and maps, and we were required to find a partner and be on our way. Our mission was to find several orange bags scattered Above : Winners with a smile around the park, and then staple the correct symbol onto the card given to Below: Girls monitoring score board us. Our goal was to return to the site without getting lost. But apparently, that didn’t work for all couples. Most of us went as determined couples and returned as exhausted groups. But it was fun, though. The winners were the first students to finish the courses with the correct stamped symbols. They each received a pink water bottle as a prize. The bottle was made out of a special material so the colour of the bottle changed when it was in the sunlight. When the activities were finished, we were back on the bus and on our way to school. Overall, it was an exciting, fantastic, challenging, yet exhausting day. Fatima Yaman 7C

Message From The LIbrary As the end semester one is quickly approaching we would like to request your support in having your child to return any of the school Library resources including non-fiction and fiction items by 11/June/2010. If your child has lost hir/her book(s), you are expected to pay the cost of the book. Please do not hesitate in contacting the library staff if you have any questions. Many thanks for your assistance in this matter. Ms Halide Okmen - Library Manager

Did you know about Shahi – Visual Dictionary?

What did the spider do inside the library computer? It made a Web page.

Here is a cool tool that you might find interesting – Shahi Visual Dictionary. It is great for Visual Learners and ESL students. It can be used by all. Combines Wiktionary and Flickr, Google and Yahoo images together to produce a site which has a range of definitions, catergorises into nouns and verbs with images to help define the meaning. Words or phrases that may not be recognised by the dictionary still show related images. The possibilities are enormous.

Your child’s needs are our concern no.1 concern! What’s News?

I am sure you are always wondering what is being done for your child’s learning. As the teaching team of Ilim College, this issue is addressed almost every minute of every day. We take it upon ourselves to cater for the different learning styles and needs of each child in our classroom. Currently we are working on a Differentiation Project through the Australian Government Quality Teacher Program. This program offers the opportunity for our teaching staff to reflect on ways in which they can, as professionals address the needs of our students, through getting to know them and the way in which they can learn better. As part of this program we have an Educational Consultant, Dr. Mauri Hamilton, who visits our school and works closely with our teachers to help them further develop their teaching skills, in turn making the learning environment in our classroom much more student learning orientated and more productive. At present time, all classroom teachers have had the opportunity to explore and think about the e5 model of professional teaching. The e5 Instructional Model was started in 2009. It was developed and tested over 18 months, it is viewed as a reference point for school leaders and teachers to develop a deeper understanding of what constitutes high quality teacher practice in the classroom. Your child matters to us. Your child’s needs are our no.1 concern. Teaching and Learning Coordinator page 9

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR VICTORIOUS DEBATING TEAM The 2010 debating team at Ilim College is made up of year 8 and 10 students. These students were chosen based on a selective criterion. Ilim College students participate in 5 interschool debates throughout the year; whereby they debate against students from other schools. Our students debate against students from a variety of schools, like Mary Immaculate, Australian International Academy, Preston Girls Secondary College and more. Our students benefit from the debating club in numerous ways. Their confidence levels improve as well as their public speaking ability. Working in a team environment also allows students to work cooperatively with others to form cohesive debates.

Alhamdulilah, this year we have won many debates and continue to learn a lot from our interschool debating experiences. Many students were selected as best speakers for numerous debates, such as Nuzha Wazeer from year 10 in round 2 and Furkan Erbasi from year 8 in round 3. We have successfully participated in 3 debates so far this year and look forward to the following 2 rounds. We hope to make it to the finals too insha’Allah. May the debating team grow and flourish in the coming years insha’Allah. Ms. Amal Abou-eid Debating Coordinator

Muslims in Careers Ilim College was fortunate to have two guest speakers during the annual Muslim in Careers. This event was held on Monday 17 May and catered towards the VCE students. Mazen Yehia, a Physiotherapist and Rania Ibrahim, a Pharmacist devoted their morning to share their experiences and educate the students about their careers. All students were intrigued and found the session valuable. This was evident as many students asked questions in relation to pathways of study and specific industry based questions. IT/CYBER SAFETY WEEK Cyberbullying Children using the internet can be cyberbullied or harassed through internet services like email, chat rooms, instant messaging, social networks or through websites. Bullying through mobile phone technologies such as SMS is also considered cyberbullying. Cyberbullying includes teasing, spreading online rumours and sending unwanted or threatening messages or defamatory material. While it can have a damaging effect on children and young people, parents can encourage them to take control of the situation. This may be done by:

The first week of Term 3 is ICT/Cyber safety week. The purpose of this week is to educate the school community (parents/teachers/ students) about the role of technology in our lives and some of the risks and concerns that come with technology usage. We have planned some exciting and fun activities for both Primary and Secondary students like an in-school cyber safety/bullying performance by Brainstorm Productions on Friday 16th of July.

Children and Adolescents Internet Activity The internet is an incredible tool. It offers the chance to become part of an enormous virtual community connected by mutual interest rather than geography. The internet can provide young and old users benefits, including: •

independent learning and research skills and

advising children not to reply to any messages from a bully. Often if bullies don’t receive a response they will give up

learning how to block a bully, so they can’t make contact

keeping a record of the harassing messages and any replies. This may help parents, or the authorities, if necessary, to find out who is sending them

keeping usernames and passwords secret. If someone misuses a username and password to post damaging information about a child it can be difficult to remove

children recognising that if messages are threatening, a parent or carer should be told immediately. Cyberbullying, if threatening, is illegal and can be reported to the police

contacting the website administrator (often known as the webmaster) to ask for content to be removed, if bullying information has been posted on that website.

Narratives with Mr. Hassan Throughout Term Two, students in Mr. Hassan’s Year 9D English Class have been focussing on emotional narratives. The class were taught numerous literary devices and were strongly encouraged to utilise their newly acquired skills in their everyday prose. Their assessment task was to complete a short narrative with the prompt “What a Mess” in forty minutes without the help of a dictionary or thesaurus. Below are two examples of their final outcomes... What a Mess... In the midst of a dark, foggy valley I stood; my heart pounding, as if trying to attack me. My brain spinning out of control and my legs dragging me on, like a slave chained to a caravan. I pushed on through what seemed to go forever. My body was slowly declining, the plug was about to be pulled. On the other hand, determination which kept me going seeped in from the beating of my enlightened and precious heart. I knew she was here; somewhere, anywhere but she was definitely here. I could feel her love blistering through the darkness, applying a certain

charm. This although did nothing to help the fact that I was in a horrific and mysterious location. I knew I was pushing myself to the limit; my body was breaking the laws of physics. My brain told me to stop, it was illogical. It began to pound my head, forcing me to understand. Although I couldn’t, I just couldn’t... I kept going, her face giving me a push, a ‘final hope.’ But it was useless, the time had come. My life was over. What happened next was destiny; I fell slowly, yet gracefully. In my own opinion it was far from a hero’s death. I had failed, my dreams of the words “I do” had left me, sucked out of my body elsewhere. At that moment, my eyes failed and soon after followed my heart. My one reason of existence... “I’m sorry Jaan’ (precious), I’m really sorry.” Usama Iftikhar – Year 9D Is there any hope? Everything is slamming the ground like a saddened tear. The once standing high, Sandhill city is now being demolished. I could feel my heartbeat trying to escape my weakened body, and my conscience screaming to run...

survival. Eventually, it seemed useless. The bloody buildings roared as they chased me. The collapsing buildings, they scream for help... blood was racing out of my organs, and began to flood my senses. Eventually I slowly lost hope, and yielding to life gently snuck into my thoughts. I had given up, I thought to myself. People always said the other side was a better place, but I doubted it... A final silent scream for God, surged out of my lungs. A final inch of hope left my soul. A final sense of brightness is being swallowed by the darkness of my weakened soul. A final fight for survival escaped with the flowing blood, from my broken soul. I stood still, silently, waiting for death to greet me. Everything halted. No sense of humanity was around. “I’m dead” was the only thing in my mind. Standing alone on the rubble, more like a war zone, I thought: Is there anyone alive? Is there any hope of survival? Or I am dead? Hassan Al-Awady – Year 9D
