Together we published our quarterly magazine for three years with 12 issues and 4 special edition guides. It fills us with pride to see the body of work that was put on our hearts & hands to create with our community. We couldn’t have done this without the support of our advertising partners, amazing team, photographers, contributors, and friends. We’ve been on the radio, podcasts, hosted events, pop up shops, emceed a charity gala, created a fashion show, been part of the Deighton Cup and FLEUR, sponsored events, launched a clothing line and a number of collaborative products that we believe in.

Final MESSAGE

Radio Interview

Style alone cannot change the world, but the women who own it sure can! In August 2016, we were two lifelong friends who owned our style and launched a media brand for the women of Vancouver. When we launched as a duo, Kyla Getty was making a slow exit from her maternity leave and was looking to invest herself in a passion project to be creative once again while still allowing her to be available to the needs of her young family. Jody Belanger was searching for a change – at the time she was single and her corporate background presented the perfect fit to take over the demands of the business operations. In just a few short years, how things have changed! Life is good and we both feel so blessed. Today, it is Jody who has a brand new baby and fiancé at home. And with this issue, she is announcing her desire to fully invest herself into life with baby Charody – something that we lovingly support. We launched with four pillars of the brand, including: print, our website, social media and video. We came from two very rich but different career backgrounds, but our love for eachother, passion for style and a quest to build a movememt of style with soul to empower was at our core. We had big dreams and endless ideas... all of which were surpassed by the reality that became this community. We are beyond grateful to our team and the partners who stood with our message and supported the success of our print magazine in this digital world. It is with full hearts that we celebrate what the print magazine has become and say farewell to this beloved piece of our brand.

WHAT LIES AHEAD FOR THE BRAND

Life is not actually a magazine, it’s a book – with an evolving plot and many chapters. So as we turn the page, we enter the exciting new storyline for what I Like Her Style Vancouver will become. The platform celebrationg Style and Soul is alive and well. Kyla looks forward to the opportunity to share even more of herself, her graphic design business – Gett Creative Inc., and her thoughfully styled ideas for life along with contributions from Lower Mainland creatives and more. Stay tuned for the exciting relaunch of ilikeherstylevancouver.com and the @ilikeherstylevancouver instagram feed in January. We hope that our time as a duo in business has inspired you to own your style and that you change your piece of the world for the better. Whether it’s launching a business or choosing time for motherhood. The beauty of life is that it’s ours to create. The things that we have been able to do together with ILHSV have been a dream come true. Thank you for being part of it.

WHEN I LIKE HER STYLE VANCOUVER CO-FOUNDER KYLA GETTY FOUND OUT THAT HER 12 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER KAITLYN HAD BEEN THE TARGET OF MEAN-SPIRITED COMMENTS BY A PAIR OF HER PEERS ON INSTAGRAM, IT IGNITED A MOVEMENT. “In a world where reportedly, about 37% of young people aged of 12 – 17 have been bullied online, it is still shocking as a parent to hear that your child has been directly affected,” Kyla shares. After doing some research, it was confirmed that females of this age group are more often affected as victims of cyber bullying than males – and that they are also more commonly the perpetrators of the senseless shaming, as well. Both enraged and heartbroken at the same time, Kyla could still recall two scenarios when she had been the subject of shame by her peers during school years. “Though 20+ years have passed, and I am now a confident woman with two daughters and a career that aims to uplift and support women, it’s scary how even just one off-side comment in your childhood can be so etched in your memory. This is not what I want for my daughters – or for any girl.” It was a relief to know that the teachers and school took the ‘cyber bullying’ that had been going on amongst students very seriously. When Kyla found out that a group of Kaitlyn’s friends had rushed to her side to assure her that the comments made were completely untrue, her ‘mothering heart’ burst with gratitude for the girls who stood by her daughter’s side. She knew that she wanted to do something to thank these girls as much as she wanted to use her platform to raise Kaitlyn and all girls above this senseless hate. She envisioned the kind girls wearing empowering shirts as a ‘badge of honour’ to signify that they had stood up for their ‘sister’.

Wanting to turn the cyber bullying into a positive for her daughter, Kyla and Jody decided to make Kaitlyn and her best friend Neveah Welder the campaign poster girls.

STAND UP FOR YOUR SISTERS. A C O L L A B O R AT I O N WA S B O R N .

In a school filled with students from all walks of life, some chose to bully and other chose to stand up for Kaitlyn. These are the girls who choose a path brightly lit with opportunity. The movement ‘Stand Up For Your Sisters’ was born from a negative experience which unfortunately all-too-many girls have shared. Out of this, we have created a force for positivity – and we couldn’t imagine a better company to partner with than Reign + Glory – newly re-branded (formerly Free Reign). With the mission ‘feel good, look good + do good,’ Reign + Glory is known for producing empowering, inspiring, ethical and versatile pieces, made with integrity in Canada – completely sweatshop free. Their collections are 100% made using eco-friendly fabrics and they are constantly working to elevate awareness for other invisible conditions like childhood disabilities, mental health, chronic illness, and Autism. I Like Her Style Co-Founder Jody Belanger shares, “raising self esteem and creating unity for girls of all ages has been on my mind, especially since the recent arrival of our first baby girl, Charody.” Kyla and Jody grew up together as best friends – the sisters that they didn’t otherwise have. “We want to do anything we can through our ILHSV Media Movement to celebrate and uplift women and girls as SISTERS. That is the world that I want my daughter to grow up in. We couldn’t be more pleased that Reign + Glory owners Melanie Pederson and Nikki Nguyen are our partners.”

SADLY, CYBER BULLYING AFFECTS COUNTLESS INDIVIDUALS. WE HOPE THAT OUR CAMPAIGN HELPS GIRLS TAKE THEIR POWER BACK AND MAKE A STAND AGAINST THIS NEGATIVITY. REMEMBER, CREATING THIS MOVEMENT IS OUR RESPONSE TO JUST ONE OCCURRENCE. WE ALL HAVE THE POWER TO USE OUR OWN UNIQUE GIFTS TO SPREAD POSITIVITY. WE HOPE THAT WE INSPIRE YOU TO BE PART OF THIS MOVEMENT – AND CREATE YOUR OWN.

Charody Eve

WELCOME TO THE WORLD CHARODY EVE, EMBRACED IN HER MOMMA’S ARMS AT 11:35AM ON JUNE 23, 2019 AT ROYAL COLUMBIAN HOSPITAL IN NEW WESTMINSTER. THIS PRECIOUS ANGEL CAME IN AT 8 LBS 2.4 OUNCES AND 53 CM IN LENGTH – THE PERFECT BUNDLE OF JOY!

The journey to get to motherhood has not been an easy ride for our Co-founder & Business Director, Jody Belanger, but in the moments of Charody’s first breath it was all worth it. Living by the mantra ‘trust the journey’, Jody made no exception to that in the labor process – thankfully – as it was an eventful weekend requiring a lot of trust leading into this precious girl’s arrival.

14

Jody is known for interjecting personal touches to experiences and styling a life full of heart & soul. This even applied to the chaos of labor. She was sure to bring a few of her favourite things into the delivery room. She had her personalized playlist on repeat, photos of her beloved dog and first baby Asia taped to the side of her hospital bed,

visualizations of her and her family in Tofino (their ‘happy place’) to get her through the contractions, and most importantly her man, best friend of 20 years, and rock in life – Kody – by her side.

Since the day it was discovered Jody was having a little girl, they knew right away what her name would be and shared it with the world - Charody Eve! Allowing her loved ones to connect early on with the precious girl growing inside her helped eliminate the fears of anything going wrong. She was focused on staying positive and keeping the preparation for her arrival therapeutic and soul soothing. In that process, Jody’s new happy place became Charody’s Nursery – starting from bare white walls, she created a sanctuary for her baby girl that was filled with so much thought and love. Vintage Woodland Chic was the goal and that was achieved with a mixture of old, new, and special touches along the way. Jody shares some of her ‘Styling with Sentiment’ tips for creating a space that will give you those warm and fuzzies when you step foot inside!

STYLING WITH

Sentiment

HAPPY PLACE VIBES When deciding the theme, I wanted it to incorporate elements that bring me joy as her Momma who has experienced the world, and for me that is nature! The woodland theme immediately brought me to a place of tranquility, and I wanted those vibes to be passed on to my little one. TRANSITIONAL It was important for me to create something that could grow with her. Sure, she may not have the same taste as her Momma when she grows up, but there are pieces from this room that can be carried on with her through the years. ENJOY THE PROCESS Styling a space as special as your baby’s nursery should not feel like a burden, but instead a gift. Rushed projects are never enjoyable, so allow yourself enough time. I started early and it allowed me to shop around for the perfect items, working piece by piece and being inspired by purchase. DIY TOUCHES Sometimes you can’t quite find what you are looking for when you have a vision. What better way to achieve it than by making it yourself? For me, that was the floral wreaths above her crib and the chalk-painted books on her dresser – two of my favourite items in the room. (I don’t think it’s a coincidence they are some of Charody’s favourite things to look at too!) NEW & OLD When it comes to styling either a wardrobe or a room, I love to mix vintage and new pieces – it adds so much character and charm. Charody’s room has thrifted furniture pieces like the trunk chest for her books, tall lamp in the perfect wine color, refinished statement dresser, and a Bentall wicker rocking chair exactly like the one I had in my home growing up. I wanted to invest in quality for the crib and change table and opted for new. TELL A STORY When I walk through her nursery I can tell the story of her life from the moment she was conceived until her arrival through the sentimental pieces included. Through this ‘style story’ I have set the tone for the beginning chapters leading her to write the rest. PHOTO PERFECTION The beauty of planning a theme in advance is that you can keep it in mind for upcoming photography. I decided to do a maternity shoot and a newborn shoot with the intention of including some framed shots on the wall. With that in mind, I was sure to keep the color stories consistent to create flow within the images and the room. PRICELESS PIECES Throughout the nursery, I have included items that hold a special meaning. For example, her ultrasound photo from the day we found out she was a girl, the flower crown from my baby shower, a mother-daughter statue my mother gave me when I moved away years ago, a dreamcatcher bought by my mother in law for Charody, and the Beauty & the Beast music box from our Gender Reveal party, to name a few. 15

Lezé TheLabel KAREN & TANYA LEE: ECO FASHION MAVENS & BUSINESS BESTIES LEZÉ is on a mission to help women rebel against traditional work wear by infusing nature’s functional resources with comfort and freedom.

Founded by friends Tanya and Karen Lee, LEZÉ began with a phone call and an idea. After years of purchasing uncomfortable and expensive work wear to mask their self-doubt in the workplace, with LEZÉ, the duo have introduced garments that combine a fresh day in sweat pants feel with sustainable materials. Through the comfort and styling ease of each garment they seek to inspire women of all professions to navigate their career paths freely. Tanya and Karen exposed their early dreams on Kickstarter in 2017 with the launch of their first ever pants, The Everyday Pants. Today, they have combined that ‘fresh day in pajamas’ feel, with infusions of nature’s functional resources with the launch of ‘The Americano Collection’ that is both highly versatile and sustainable. “Crafted from reused coffee grinds and recycled post-consumer water bottles, this collection consists of work wear essentials, such as pants, blazers, camisoles and shirts where you can effortlessly transition from home to office to play.” Growing up, Karen would marvel at her mother for the way she re-purposed things. Ahead of her time, she had figured out that used coffee grinds absorb odor. Outside of childhood, the pair’s motivation towards sustainability has also been fueled by the state of the fashion industry, which now produces up to 92 million tonnes of waste worldwide. That’s 4% of our world’s waste. The duo feels a sense of responsibility to design with the intention of increasing the longevity of our earth’s resources. “That’s why our desire for change is always present. With every collection, we select a recycled component as the main feature and present it in a way that’s fresh and unique so that people view sustainability differently.” Tanya and Karen admit that they have always been inspired by their community of women and relied on their stories to shape the direction of the product line. Through LEZÉ, they hope to encourage all types women to feel comfortable in their skin and fully own their career milestones.

2019 was life-changing for us. We had the opportunity to deconstruct how things were done, to create a better system, and be better partners to each other. The only thing that can torpedo a working friendship is whether you allow your ego to get in the way. Willingness to communicate and grow is essential to making it work. Even after being friends for 10 years, we got to further understand each others’ fears and frustrations, and worked together to elevate each other to become a stronger team.

Did you always have a love for Fashion & Styling? Karen - Honestly, no. I never saw myself as fashionable. I struggled with shopping because all I wanted was to find one store that had everything I was looking for. So when Tanya first approached me with the idea of starting a clothing line, I was skeptical. It wasn’t until we got down to the core of why we wanted to do this - instilling comfort and freedom in other women - did I understand the true impact of fashion. Tanya - Me neither; my style has always been basic and comfortable. I love essential tank tops and jeans. I don’t even see us as fashion designers; we’re simply designers of comfortable living.

What has been the toughest lesson you’ve learned in this business? Karen - As women, we naturally want to perfect our first product before putting it to market because we want to be excellent creators. But the downfall to this is we wait and wait for the perfect moment – when it will never be perfect. Your first product will improve only when real people are experiencing it – and then it’s your job to listen. Tanya - Getting familiar with patience and sitting with discomfort when things aren’t happening right this second. In our first year, we experienced factory fires, typhoons and shipping delays that taught us to choose between quality over profit. We learned that if it takes 8 months to develop a product but it will be what we had envisioned... then 8 months it will be.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received? Karen - People don’t buy into what you have, but what you believe in. Tanya - Things happen the way they’re supposed to happen, so if they’re not happening yet, it’s not your time.

REBELLING AGAINST TRADITION

How do you push past the fears that are a part of entrepreneurship?

In our modern day setting, work looks different for women than it did in the 1950’s. You can be a mother and an entrepreneur, a lawyer and a part-time influencer or a freelancer and an activist at the same time! Women are taking on multiple roles in order to achieve their fullest potential with their goals. Long story short, our garments work to inspire today’s version of you and career freedom, both in and out of the 9 to 5 environment.

Karen - There are different kinds of fearthe kind where your gut is screaming at you that this is against your morals and it’s a really bad idea. Then, there’s the fear that you’re uncertain whether this is within your scope, or you have no idea how to accomplish it. Whenever I experience the latter, I lean into this quote, “Everything you’ve ever wanted is on the other side of fear.”

We believe that workwear doesn’t have to be so rigid. It can be a multitude of facets so that your wardrobe can be transitional in every stage of your life. We hope to carve our own category that encompasses both lifestyle and workwear - a type of ‘work leisure’ - with pieces that can be worn from the bedroom to the boardroom! We want to keep pushing innovative fabric combinations, so we can continue rebelling against traditional workwear. This means experimenting with waste in unique ways to change how we view recycling that continues to support comfort and freedom. We also have an internal goal of recycling 300,000 water bottles into our clothing by 2020 and are working towards customizable pieces that can adapt to the seasons (or the amount of pizza you’ve had) in your life.

Tanya - I remind myself that the only way out of a scary situation, is to go through it. While you’re going through it, you treat yo’self.

We are supporters of Blume and Londre, both women-owned, badass companies who are unapologetically fearless in breaking the mold of what ‘beauty’ means in society. We also admire Smash and Tess, as they’ve successfully positioned themselves as a pioneer in comfortable rompers when you think ‘romper’, you think Smash and Tess.

TANYA LEE’S PERSONAL STYLE SIMPLE PIECES THAT LOOK UNASSUMING, BUT FEEL LUXURIOUS AND MADE WITH HIGH-QUALITY FABRICS AND FINISHES. I want to access a new level of comfort that hasn’t been reached before - pieces that can contour to your body without the discomfort of fasteners, buttons or anything restrictive. This means experimenting with new fabric combinations to accommodate these strategic designs that can push the boundaries to how comfortable work wear can be.

WHENEVER YOU SEE SOMEONE DOING SOMETHING “BIGGER” AND “BETTER” – THANK THEM FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHOW YOU WHAT IS POSSIBLE.

KAREN LEE’S PERSONAL STYLE GIVE ME ALL THE ANDROGYNOUS, OVER-SIZED PIECES THAT WILL SWALLOW ME WHOLE, PLEASE! Far too often, women feel discouraged when clothes don’t fit right and instead, highlight certain aspects that would rather be hidden. I hope to inspire other fashion brands to look towards comfort and progressive values when designing their new collections.

Fall Beauty Talk FALL IN LOVE WITH THESE SEASONAL TIPS & MUST-HAVES BY KYLA GETTY WITH GUESTS ANNIE & XOEY OF AX ART

1

AX Art Faves MARC JACOBS BEAUTY Dew Drops Coconut Gel Highlighter Glowing skin is always in season. We love these liquid highlighting drops because it can be worn alone, on top of foundation or mixed with foundation for a more natural glowing finish to your makeup. We even use this on the collarbones and shoulders for that extra pop of shine on a special night out.

2 | NUDESTIX Nudies Matte Blush & Bronze Cream blush has a beautiful finish that reflects light and looks more natural on the skin. We love this color because it’s one that most people aren’t normally drawn to. It looks brownish and nude but is incredible for all different skin tones and is a great fall blush shade. 3 | NARS Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation Every brand from Fenty, Anastasia Beverly Hills to Pat Mcgrath has been coming out with natural, luminous or radiant finish foundations this season. But our all time favourite is still NARS. It’s hydrating, buildable, yet lightweight and long lasting. The color options are also amazing on all skin tones. 4 | Osis Dust It Mattifying Volume Powder This product is a hair goddess in itself. It will do justice in any hair type, processed or unprocessed, dry or oily! It lasts all day long so when your hair starts to look a little flat, just give it a quick tousle. It’s a very fine powder so it also sucks up any oils also acting as a dry shampoo!

Kyla Getty, Creative Director here to chat about how to put your best face forward this season! With our event calendars brimming with special celebrations, today I’m chatting with guest Beauty Editors – the official ILHSV Glam Squad: AX Art Makeup Artists Annie Truong & Xoey Vo. www.axartmakeup.com Connect On Social: @axartmakeup Xoey Vo & Annie Truong

It’s in the eyes...

I’m excited to share that in addition to hair & makeup, AX Art offers an array of Lash and Brow services which help accentuate your natural features & beauty. These services provide effortless, everyday convenience, so that’s why they are definitely numbers 5, 6 and 7 on our list! 5 | Microblading and Ombré Powder brows Now that summer is over and we are back in our routinues, semi-permanent brow tattooing is a god-send for the mornings when you can use an extra 15 minutes in bed. AX Art Makeup now offers this service. Come in for a free consultation and we are happy to find the perfect style that suits you and your skin type. 6 & 7 | Lash Extensions & Lash Lifts

If you are stuck between whether you should get a lash lift or lash extensions, let us break it down real quick for you! LASH EXTENSIONS are applied to your own individual lashes and can enhance your eyes dramatically. It gives the look of mascara without any application of makeup so you can really wake up and look like you’re wearing makeup! A full set can take from 1.5 to 2 hours and they’ll require a spruce up and fill every 2.5-3 weeks to keep them looking fresh and full. LASH LIFTS are done by individually curling the natural lashes on a silicone mold which is curved upward and outward to create a curl. As a result, you have thick, darker lashes that give you that gorgeous curl without fail, making your eyes appear bigger and brighter. The whole process takes about an hour and 15 minutes and can last up to 6-8 weeks depending.

If you’re like me, you may find that your lids aren’t as large of a canvas to experiment with eyeshadow techniques. This Fall emphasize your eyes by creating the illusion of a deeper crease. SIMPLE TIPS FOR TAKING PHOTOS WITH YOUR PHONE

When we launched the JH Love Presets we had quite a few questions coming in asking us to share tips on how to take beautiful photos with your phone! We answered a lot of emails and dished our advice one by one so we thought we should share everything

we

recommend in

one helpful article. So,

to

ensure

you’re

getting

the MOST out of your JH Love Presets, I’m sharing 6 of my TOP tips when it comes to taking pictures with your phone!

26

1. CLEAN YOUR LENS

Before you even take a photo – clean the lens of your camera! This will make sure that the image is nice and clear!

2. DON’T USE THE FILTERS ON YOUR PHONE

You want to avoid using the filters that already exist on your phone. I mean, you CAN use these filters but I wouldn’t suggest using them and then using my presets. If you want your photos to look fresh and airy like mine, take the photo without filters THEN add your desired JH Love Preset to the image. If you’re happy with using the filters that already exist on your phone then maybe the presets aren’t for you and that’s totally okay!

3. ALWAYS TAKE PHOTOS IN NATURAL LIGHT

To avoid images looking yellow, make sure to turn off all of your incandescent lights and take your photos in NATURAL light! This is key to a stunning image! If you have the option to take them in diffused natural light even better … if not, maybe wait until Golden Hour (dusk and/or dawn).

Photos: Provided by Team Jilly, Mackenzie Dempsey @mackenziejdempsey

A STUNNING image always starts with the photo first … you can add presets until the cows come home but if you don’t have a great canvas to start with, you probably won’t be overly thrilled with the end result.

4. WORK WITH THE SUN

Avoid shooting directly into the sunlight, this will make your subject very dark. You also want to avoid having the sun at your back and your subject right in the direct sunlight as this may wash them out. Try moving about 45 degrees and having the sun at your side, you should be able to find your sweet spot if you move around. We live in a digital world so don’t be afraid to snap a ton of photos to get the one that’s juuust right!

H AV E Y O U T R I E D T H E P R E S E T S ?

5. NEVER USE YOUR FLASH

You want to avoid using your flash when taking photos – as mentioned above, natural light is the best light!

6. APPLY YOUR PRESET

Once you’ve snapped your perfect photo, this is when you would apply one of the JH Love presets! Upload your image to the Lightroom CC app on your phone, click “presets” then apply the presets one by one to determine which one you love the best on your photo! That’s it! Easy peasy right?! Don’t forget to share your images on social media using #JillyPresets so I can see all of YOUR beautifully edited photos!! xo Jilly

Style Hack: Converting Summer Style to Fall Style I’m not the type of person who packs up half my wardrobe once the summer is over. I always thought that seemed a little silly. Sure, maybe the shorts can go, but they also don’t really take up that much space. I like to make use of the clothes I buy all year round, including summer staples like tank top rompers and dresses.

I’ve personally been trying to stretch my wardrobe as much as possible lately and buying pieces that can work throughout the seasons. I’ve found that buying basics and solid colours is really beneficial when it comes to mixing and matching. It helps that they also pair well with other items that you already have in your closet.

LARGE HAIR CLIPS: This trend is coming in hard and I don’t want it to go away anytime soon. I picked up this beaded hair clip from Privilege Clothing in Coquitlam Centre and love it! I jumped right into this trend. 28

One of my favourite summer-to-fall style hacks is taking what you have and making it into something new. Evelyn and I did this with our Mommy and Mini outfits (pictured). She’s wearing a white spaghetti strap summer dress and I have on a tank top romper. With the addition of a crop sweater to both pieces, we’ve turned them into outfits suitable for fall weather. Not a bad little hack, right?! Well, dresses and rompers aren’t the only thing that this applies to. Take a skirt, for example: tuck in your favourite knit pullover, and add some boots — ca-ute! You can easily dress it up with a pointed-toe mule (pictured from Call it Spring) or dress it down like Evelyn did with her slip-on shoes (pictured from Minimoc). It’s an amazing hack for ourselves, but even more so for the kiddos. They don’t fit clothes, typically, for more than one year, so making the most use of what you already have just makes sense. See what you can put together; maybe you’ll find a cute match with a pair of knit stockings, a skirt and a sweater. Layer it up!

SUGARING IS FOR EVERYBODY WHAT IS SUGARING? Natural eco-friendly body hair removal Made of Sugar, Lemon & Water No sticks or strips

FALL HAIR ACCESSORIES

SUGARD.CA SCRUNCHIES: They just keep popping up more and more. I almost always have a Chelsea King scrunchie in my hair or around my wrist. I find the Chelsea King ones are the most comfortable however I decide to style them, and they very easily add a little something extra to my daily outfit.

H AT S : Don’t feel that you need to worry about packing away the summer hats either, because they are here to stay. You and your little can both rock this trend into fall.

FASHION CAREERS 101 WITH ST YLE 9 TO 5 FOUNDER The fashion industry is constantly evolving and so are the jobs. Founded by Christie Lohr, Style Nine to Five is a job board specific to the fashion and creative industry. Employers post opportunities and job seekers apply to jobs that interest them. Hiring managers are connected with suitable and qualified candidates. With the increase in e-commerce and social media jobs, styleninetofive.com is one amazing place where candidates can find these new exciting jobs and learn more about the companies that are hiring. Always evolving, they’ve added recruiting and career services – both a natural progression and extension of the job board.

CHRISTIE

LOHR Christie’s career in fashion began at 17 as a Part Time Sales Associate. From there, she moved to Store Manager, Menswear Buyer, TV Fashion Expert and has held various fashion internships.

“The role I was in when I started Style Nine to Five was a Recruiter, so I knew the ins and outs of posting on job websites and what that whole process looked like. I was unsuccessful posting jobs on general job websites and taking ads out in newspapers. I wasn’t finding any qualified applicants. I thought to myself, “there has to be a fashion specific job board!”. Where are all the fashionistas!? There wasn’t so I quit my job and started the journey two weeks after I had the idea. I found an opportunity in the market and filled it.”

Photos: Brooklyn D Photography

Q: What do you love about working in the fashion industry? A: There are so many career possibilities! From very creative like a Fashion Designer, to a business leader such as a Store Manager. Love numbers? You can get into planning, buying or distribution. It’s an industry that allows you to express yourself and celebrates that. Fashion used to consist of a handful of jobs. These days you’ll find many jobs that support the online e-commerce side of retailers that include Order Fulfillment or E-commerce Coordinator. 32

Vancouver is home to so many amazing fashion companies. Everyone seems to want to work for a head office rather than on the sales floor. I always say get in the door with one of these companies in an entry job such as a Customer Service Representative (answers phones and emails with customer issues) and move up or to a different department once you prove yourself. There are also Talent Managers for influencer agencies, Studio Stylists that work on social media content and campaigns, Creative, Brand and Marketing Managers.

Others include Copy Writers for internal communication or brand messaging on company websites or product tag info. I’m seeing more Employee Experience Managers with the increase of companies ensuring a positive and unique work culture and Fabric Sustainability roles to ensure fabrics are environmentally safe, sourcing new materials and chemicals to use that shrink the footprint of their business.

Q: What is your best piece of advice for someone heading into an interview? A: Do your research on the company! Know the backstory as well as the latest happenings. Have a list of questions to ask the interviewer. Dress the part to compliment both your style and the company brand and vibe. Smile. I know it’s nerve wracking, but a smile can lighten the nerves.

Q: What is the best career advice you’ve ever received? A: Do what you can with what you have. Also, lead by example in actions not words.

CHRISTIE’S TOP 10 TIPS FOR FINDING YOUR DREAM JOB 1. A STRONG SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE – and I’m not talking about having a lot of followers. If I were to go to your Instagram right now, what impression would I get of you? Your future employer will be checking. 2. HIRING MANAGERS SPEND A LOT OF TIME ON LINKEDIN. It’s an amazing way to get discovered. You can now also create a candidate profile on Style Nine to Five for employers to view. Visit Style Nine to Five and click on Candidate Registration. 3. A MODERN RESUME that creates a clear picture of you and your career accomplishments. 4. A COVER LETTER that speaks to why you love the company you’re applying to and what you can bring to the team. 5. FOLLOW-UP AFTER YOU APPLY. Hiring Managers are sometimes bombarded with 100s of resumes and yours may have been lost in the mix. Find their email address and send a personal note to follow-up.

Q: What are common mistakes you see on resumes? A: Your resume makes the first impression. I’m still seeing old school, basic resumes that are multiple pages with outdated fonts. This is no way to tell your career story or show who you are. If Hiring Managers are looking at your resume for 10 seconds, they should get a sense of this right away. Bring your resume to life! Hyperlink your email, LinkedIn, social handles (if they are professional enough for a potential employer to see). Try and fit everything onto one page, two max! Put the most important information at the top. Include your hard skills such as ‘tech skills’ but leave out soft skills such as ‘hard working’ - we sure hope you are! (Being a team player should be a given.) To get help with your resume, check out the Job Seeker Services on Style Nine to Five. Q: What is the most rewarding part of your business? A: Helping people find their career passions and helping them find their dream jobs!!! It lights me up!

6. GO BEYOND THE JOB BOARDS. Find out the Hiring Manager’s name and email address and apply directly to them. Your personal email will show your enthusiasm and make you stand out. 7. BE OVER-PREPARED FOR AN INTERVIEW. Come with specific examples of your career successes and accomplishments. Also, be prepared to answer the obvious questions like, “What are your strengths and weaknesses?”. Do not say you’re a perfectionist. 8. NETWORK. Attend events that give you the chance to meet like-minded professionals. You may find that job through someone you know. 9. START SOMEWHERE. Just get your foot in the door. If you really want to work for a certain company, be open to various roles. 10. LOSE THE ENTITLEMENT AND EGO and know you have to work hard in your career. Don’t skip steps in getting to where you want to be.

FASHION CONNECT ON SOCIAL @soulrestyled

At Soul Restyled, we focus on personal style and confidence. When I came up with the name Soul Restyled, I wanted it to truly reflect the work that I do with my clients because it’s so much more than style and confidence. We make adjustments at a soul level in order to reflect who they really are through how they show up, sometimes starting from the outside (style), in (confidence).

KELLIE INGLIS, CONFIDENCE COACH AND PERSONAL STYLIST BEHIND

SOUL RESTYLED Kellie Inglis originally began her business with a focus on styling alone, but two years ago she decided to incorporate confidence building into her offering. “Styling is rewarding, but I realized that it doesn’t have much weight if a women doesn’t believe in who she is, doesn’t recognize the woman looking back at her and ultimately, I want my clients’ style to be in line with who they are on the inside. Style and confidence are intertwined, more than most would think.”

How do you encourage a woman to break out of her comfort zone and try something new in her wardrobe? I remind them that they are the only one that is going to see inside a fitting room, that they need to be courageous and get vulnerable so they can truly live into the life that they deserve, style included.

THE SOUL RESTYLED EXPERIENCE:

How to accessorize your Fall look? Snakeskin belts/bags/shoes, purses in the Fall colours, felt hats, and booties are a sure-fire way to make a statement this fall.

We dig deep, we spend time in the closet, we spend time with feelings, emotions and memories attached to some of the clothing we keep. I have 2 signature programs and they both incorporate style and confidence (1 has a heavy focus on style and vice versa) so you get the best of both worlds. And you have me, a stylist that truly cares about how you feel day to day, wants you to put your best foot forward and to show up as your best self every single day.

What do you hope to see more of in the future of fashion? Relatable models so women can see how fashion and style really works.

2019 C O NT R I BU TO R

THE

RELATIONSHIP PROJECT B Y J A K E A N D TAY LO R A L L E R

STYLING YOUR WAY TO FINANCIAL FREEDOM AS A COUPLE First things first. 1. The number one thing couples argue about is money. So let us just warn you, by leveling up your finances together, it might get rocky at first but you WILL improve your relationship. You’re welcome. 2. You are not alone in debt! In our society, debt is considered “normal”. Student loan payments, car payments, mortgage payments, credit card payments, personal loan payments...you see where we are going here right? You are by no means alone, we were right there with ya along with many others! 3. If you are married, combine your finances. If you are not, don’t. Trust us on this one. Now that’s outta the way, let’s really dig in.

How did you become debt free?

In short, we followed a plan developed by a financial expert, Dave Ramsey, called “The Baby Steps”. In his 30+ years in the field he has determined this as the shortest path to wealth. (Is it the only way? Nope. But it’s the one we followed and it is wooorrrrking!) This plan takes on average 7-10 years to complete. This isn’t a get rich quick thing, friend.

DAVE RAMSEY’S BABY STEPS* 1. Save a “starter” emergency fund of $1000. This will act as a mini buffer between you and more debt. If you currently have savings, drop it down to this number. (Scary – we know!) 2. Pay off all debt, except your mortgage, as fast as you can using the “Debt Snowball” technique. (More on that in a sec!)

FRIEND, WE HAVE TO TELL YOU SOME BIG NEWS: AS OF JULY 13, 2019 – WE ARE DEBT FREE!

*cue frantic happy dancing and tears*

Listen, in 9.5 months we paid off $65,865.64. (But who’s counting? LOL) It wasn’t easy but we did it. It felt like something that we could never hit and frankly, it still hasn’t sunk in yet. We’ve been sharing every step of this journey on our blog and since we announced our goal was met, the questions piled in! So, in this article we are sharing all the answers, the nitty gritty plan, the tools, and the techniques we followed to become debt free! Please note: we are not financial experts, we’re just regular people who worked hard and made this goal happen. 44

3. Fully fund your emergency fund to 3-6 months of expenses. (Ours will be about $25K) 4. Save 15% of taxable income towards retirement. 5. Save for kids tuition/education. (Skip this if you don’t have children!) 6. Pay off your home early with any extra money above the 15% and education savings. 7. Build wealth to live and give generously!

Whew. Sounds pretty nice, right? Here’s some extra info; steps 1-3 should be done one at a time and steps 4-6 should be done at the same time in that order of priority. If you want more information on Dave Ramsey and his plan head to his website, www.daveramsey.com. (And nope, we aren’t paid to promote this!)

The juicy part. Baby Step 2: Pay off all debt. Here’s the plan we followed (and how you can, too!). 1. We created (and stuck to) a household budget. This took us about 90 days to get the kinks sorted and we use Dave Ramsey’s app called “Every Dollar”. There are many budgeting apps and methods, choose what works for you. The important part to remember is that at the beginning of every month, every dollar that is expected to come in needs to have a job. @ilikeherstylevancouver | FA LL 2019

Photo: The MacLeans @the.macleans

It should be what’s called a “zero based” budget. Meaning that every dollar that comes into your wallet has a place it’s already designed to go creating a budget that has “zero” dollars left over at the end. Start by listing any and all income. Then assign it to your essentials (food, housing, transportation) and then work your way up to the debt. Then do it again and pare down wherever you can. Every extra dollar that comes in or doesn’t get used goes towards your debt! (Trust us, doing a solid budget will feel like you’re getting a raise! If you tell your money where to go, you’ll never wonder where it went.)

budget in cash at the beginning of the month and put it in an envelope. Only use that envelope of cash when you spend in that category. This works for two reasons. Spending cash activates pain centers in your brain so you will be less likely to mindlessly overspend and it will give you a visual cue of how much you have remaining in that category which will prevent you from going over. Also, it’s really awkward to put things back or not have enough cash. So we don’t know about you, but when we see that cash in our envelopes disappearing, we stop spending! When it’s gone, it’s gone!

2. Debt Snowball Technique. This was key for us. How this works: List your debts by smallest to largest balance. Pay minimum payments on all except the littlest one. Throw every extra dollar from your new budget to crush the little one as fast as possible. Why we love this technique: Brain Science. If repaying debt was just about math, we’d all be debt free. But it’s not, it’s also about behaviour. With the snowball technique you get the “quick hits” of reward in your brain by paying off small debts completely in the first couple months. This helps your brain stick to the plan by having “proof ” that this behaviour works and encourages you to stick with it! As every debt down the list gets knocked off, you add that now freed-up minimum payment on to the next largest debt and so on. It starts quickly and it builds a momentum!

Q: We spend so much on food, how can we cut back?

3. Shovel to Hole Ratio. If your debt is the hole, you can fill it faster with a bigger shovel. That means, more income! Find ways to cut costs and boost your income with side hustles, selling everything you can (we sold old phones, TV’s, doormats, clothing, purses…), part time jobs, overtime shifts...you get it right? Keep in mind, this isn’t forever! This should only take about 2 years to pay off your debt. (Ours was 9.5 months!) Could you work this hard for a short period of time? As Dave says, “Could you live like no one else, so that later you can live and give like no one else?” We say YES!

SO NOW TO YOUR QUESTIONS: Q: How do you do a budget when your income fluctuates? Hello Entrepreneur here! Great question! We’re in that same situation and here’s what we do. We start with the money we know for sure is coming in. Let’s say that is $2000/month. (If your entire income fluctuates, take an average of the lowest it has been in the last 6 months to a year and start there). Then as more money comes in $500 here, $250 there, you add it to the income side of your budget and assign those new dollars the next place in your priorities. (Remember, start with food, shelter, and transportation then work your way down the list.)

Q: We always overspend on our budget. It feels pointless! Any Suggestions? We hear ya, friend. Listen, your budget should be giving you permission to spend. If there are areas in your budget that you often go over, ask yourselves: Do we need to add more to this category? Are we spending mindlessly or do we need more in this category to get by? Secondly, use the “Envelope System”. Meaning take out one category’s

Omg. This was so hard for us, too. Here’s our best tips: 1. Use the envelope system. 2. Buy and cook in bulk! (We now love our freezer LOL!) 3. Use coupons, promos, trial offers, etc. 4. Don’t go out to eat. (Seriously) Bring food with you! 5. Plan ahead. Like, FAR ahead. Or, at least a week. 6. Cut back on expensive choices like meat, highly processed food, premium items, etc. Can you get by on local, off brand, or without? 7. Ask for gift cards to restaurants and grocery stores for birthdays, holidays, and anniversaries!

Q: How can we get on the same page together? We are so opposite when it comes to money!

Ooooh boy. We know exactly what you mean. Usually in relationships, we are naturally opposites (opposites attract, right?). So when it comes to money, one of you might be a natural spender (Hey, Jake) and one of you a natural saver (Hi, Taylor). We like to think of relationships between opposites as two metal knives. If you clang and clash, you’ll end up dulling each other. But if you angle it just right, you’ll end up sharpening one another. So ask yourselves; How can we use each other to be better? How can you teach me to worry less about money? How can you remind me why it’s important we’re saving? Because let’s just cut to some facts. Firstly, you should be combining finances if you’re married (it’s the case in the eyes of the government anyway). Otherwise, your finances should be separate. Secondly, if you’re working towards this goal together get clear on your “why”. This makes all the difference. Are you becoming debt free to travel the world together? To get pregnant? To change your family tree by paying for your children’s education? To pay for a wedding? To start that new business? To sleep better at night because you’re so far in you can’t breathe you’re that scared? Communicate your “why’s” to each other. It makes ALL the difference. Because, you truly love and care for each other and what’s important to them should be important to you, right? Whew. That’s all we have time (and space!) for in this article! We hope you found this helpful and you’ve found a good place to start. We are ROOTING for you, friend! You CAN do this! If you need more help or want to creep on our journey, head to our website, www.relationshipproject.org to read more on the blog or check out our webinars under the “work with us” tab. SOUTH SURREY’S SPA DESTINATION FOR BODY & SOUL Set foot into Casbah in South Surrey, and you can expect a warm welcome from the reception desk team, ensuring that even if it’s your first time into the spa, you’ll feel right at home! From there, you’re shown into the locker room facilities and the lovely host ensures the perfect fit for your robe and spa footwear. Casbah offers a steam or infrared treatment prior to any facial or body treatment and the relaxation room is a great way to either begin or end your treatment with complimentary refreshments in a serene setting. Blissfully solo or with a partner, friend or group – this truly is the ultimate place for self-care, relaxation, and even celebration. Casbah owner Nicole King describes herself as an extremely hard working, fit mother of three, who loves to support her family and her community. “I absolutely love the large family and corporate culture we have created at Casbah. I love supporting women both with their career and educationally – whether it’s through our high school and college work experience opportunities or on-going spa industry education. We are avid supporters of women helping female organizations such as the Surrey Women’s Centre and Atira Women’s Resource Society.” Men and women alike are welcomed in the spa which has a current team of 50 ladies and a 2 gentlemen. Nicole ensures that everyone on the team are well-educated in their craft and come with an extremely big heart for what they do, sharing the spa’s commitment to offering a 5 star experience. “We like to work hard and play hard so we have a lot of fun together both in and out of Casbah!” She shares. The community of caring on the team can be felt by clients within the spa. Because our skin is our biggest organ, Nicole believes that taking care of it is a non negotiable investment. “It’s like brushing your teeth, if you brush everyday your teeth will remain nice and bright. The same thing works for your skin.” She prides herself on offering excellent services to maintain and repair skin damage. As for Nicole’s very own spa recommendations? She suggests the ‘Spirit of White Rock’ – a classic Casbah treatment that’s an all-in-one body experience with scrub,

Their events are more than just that though - Danielle is truly building a community of women in business who support and uplift each other. I’ve been attending their events for a few years and while they have grown and expanded, the passion and caring for each woman who attends remains the same. Thank you, Danielle, and thank you to your team for bringing together fantastic speakers and topics, incredible women and empowering us to create the businesses of our dreams - Lisa Marie Michaud

I’m so, SO grateful a community like this exists! I’ve tried different networking groups through the years, but am very blessed to have found the Business Babes Collective. You can see the care and values of the team through the content they put out, events they host, and how they interact with their community. Danielle and her team are such bright lights, and are an inspiration and encouragement to women entrepreneurs! Very excited for all their future events! - Sarah Bohdanova

Everybody Has A Book Inside Of Them: How To Bring It Out Some days you just don’t want to leave the house – and October days are the best to this guilt-free! We tend to binge watch shows, chill with movies, or finally get to that book – but what about writing a book? I have thought about this the last few years, pondering if I have something inside of me that should be written. According to Ann Marie Sabath, Everybody Has A Book Inside Of Them. Prolific author, businesswoman and entrepreneur Ann Marie Sabath is now sharing the secrets to her writing success with her newest release, Everybody Has A Book Inside Of Them: How To Bring It Out.

Dubbed “The Book Whisperer” by budding authors, Sabath’s book is chockful of easy-to-follow, proven tips for taking an idea from germination to completion, and was written to help potential authors everywhere identify the books inside them and to overcome common excuses and perceived obstacles that stand in their way. It’s full of easy-to-follow guidelines and simple advice that can be put into practice immediately to help you tap into the ideas inside you and translate your concepts into published works. www.annmariesabath.com

It’s October – the leaves are changing color, you can smell the rain, there’s a new hue of darkness that lingers, and there’s definitely a need for the cozy! This time of year is what I call the Chill Factor! October is one of my favourite times of the year - but not everyone loves it! I’ve made a little list of a few things that can hep you embrace the chill factor of October - because we all know it’s not going anywhere!

The Printed Fall Dress - Crush Clothing

Brass and Unity - Mini Warrior Bracelet

Fall Fashion is my favourite fashion of the year – there are so many layers of opportunities with all the layers of clothing that allow us to mix things up and pair items that wouldn’t be seen on others. It’s a great way to express yourself and put your wardrobe to good use.

It’s natural to feel a bit off with the darker days approaching – it can be a lot to handle for us energy-wise. If you feel a bit of anxiousness or have someone in your life that does, the Brass and Unity Mini Warrior Bracelet is a perfect fit for a touch of positivity! It’s made from calming black volcanic stone beads with a mini bullet shell casing to signify strength and perseverance. There is a strong, long-lasting stretch elastic for easy wear. Also, another angle of added warmth – a portion of proceeds are donated to help veterans to spread the message of peace and community. Why choose lava rock? Lava is known for its grounding qualities, and lava rock jewelry is believed to be wonderful for calming the emotions. Since it comes from raw energy, volcanic stone is considered to be a stone of rebirth and shedding unneeded layers of emotional attachment. In folk remedies, lava stone jewelry was also given to soldiers to help them remain calm during battle. Random cool fact- you can add a drop of your favourite essential oil to a lava bead for added serenity!

If you are in need of a little relief from the stress of life, look to the lava stone meaning as a way of introducing a beautiful, calming accessory to your jewelry collection.

One of my favourite things about Fall fashion are the printed dresses with sleeves that start to roll into the cozy boutiques. Throw on a jean or leather jacket with some ankle boots and you can easily go from the office to date night. This gorgeous dress, drenched in fall florals is the perfect way to bring a little sunshine into your October!
