Arts and Crafts SCULPTING AND POTTERY CLASS

This course introduces pottery as an art form and explores the basics of forming and shaping clay.

Melissa Henning, a local sculptor, will instruct you how to form and shape clay, make your own design, and glaze your piece. Students will receive an overview of the history of ceramics and acquire techniques in handbuilding. Note: Instructor will fire and load pottery in kiln after the class. Pieces may be picked up two weeks later.

STAINED GLASS WINDOW

Whether a beginner or experienced in stained glass, hands on instruction makes this class perfect for all abilities.

Beginners build a stained glass panel but experienced artisans can build a more advanced panel, jewelry box or lamp shade. Glass and a few necessary supplies totaling $30 to $35 are required in addition to the course fee.

Learn how to make a breakfast, lunch, and dinner using plants by research

Shorin-Ryu Karate

Shorin-Ryu Matsubiashi Karate is derived through a centuries-old merging of Chinese Gung Fu and the Okinawan punching art Te’, meaning “fist”. Students are taught fighting techniques involving the use of hands, feet, and elbows in accordance with traditional Okinawan practices. This course emphasizes strength, focus, and cardiovascular activity. Shorin-Ryu Karate is a disciplined Martial Art that develops mental and physical maturity, self-confidence, and control. Wear loose-fitting clothing and bring a water bottle.

If you’re looking for a great way to get the family together outside, this Fishing Class is the perfect event to get started. Fishing is a sport that the whole family can participate in. All ages are welcome, but those under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Bring the whole family and learn what this great sport is all about. If you have your own fishing pole and tackle bring it along, but if you don’t some supplies will be provided.

Instant Pot 101 Cooking Class

Were you lucky enough to get an Instant Pot as a gift, but are nervous about using it? This class will cover everything from setting up correctly and safely, tips for successful cooking and then together we’ll prepare and sample some great recipes to use with your Instant Pot. The goal of this class is to learn how to use your Instant Pot to its full potential.

YOGA FOR ATHLETES

Yoga is a great tool for athletes as it pulls together stretching, strength building, balance and breathing.

Each athlete, each sport is unique and learning some basic yoga practices and tools can decrease injury, increase focus, reduce stress, strengthened underused muscles and can improve overall performance. Each session, will include a warm up, some anatomy and body awareness, yoga poses and practice, breath work and a relaxation. You will be able to walk away with a yoga practice to continue on your own. No experience necessary.

Bring your own mat or we have a mat you can borrow. Teens, adults, coaches, parents are welcome to join us. Right sized racquets and balls are provided; just bring tennis shoes and a water bottle. The staff will also utilize this day to help determine what group for the summer program would be the best fit for each participant based on their individual skills and ability.

SUMMER Session The Little Falcons Tennis Program utilizes right sized tennis equipment. This is a nice introductory class for youth who are distracted and looking to practice improving attention and emotional balance. Yoga and mindfulness provide tools youth can practice to assist with anxiety and focus; and they can be used for a lifetime. There are 5 core components to the session: Connect, Breathe, Move, Focus and Relax. We will use yoga poses, breathing, meditation and props. Each class will have a checklist so youth can see what we are all covering and check off as we go. Classes are limited to 8. We provide the mats. Level 4 – Stroke Improvement

Preschool Aquatics (4 to 5 years old)

Level 1 – Introduction to Water Skills

Level 6 – Swimming and Skill Proficiency

(6 months to approximately 3 yrs) Parents and children learn together to increase a child’s comfort level in the water and build a foundation of basic skills, such as arm and leg movements and breath control. The two levels are fun-filled and help introduce water safety concepts, encouraging a healthy recreational habit that your entire family can enjoy.

Throughout the three levels, preschool-age children are taught basic aquatic safety and swimming skills, all the while increasing their comfort level in and around the water. Skills are age-appropriate, helping children achieve success on a regular basis and enjoy social interactions with other children. As in all Swimming and Water Safety courses, your child will always know that it’s safety first.

Lessons will help your student feel comfortable in the water. Learn how to enter and exit the pool, blow bubbles, submerge your face, back float, water safety and much more.

Level 2 – Fundamental Aquatic Skills

Participants will learn fundamental skills including: jumping off the side of the pool, holding breath under water, bobbing, retrieve objects underwater, treading water, front and back glide, rolling over, back and front glide, side swimming and combination strokes.

This course will develop students in skills already learned and improve other aquatic skills. Work on underwater swimming, feet first surface dive, survival swimming, open turns on front and back, tread water using 2 different kicks, front and back crawl, elementary back stroke, sidestroke, butterfly, flutter and dolphin kicks on back, plus age-appropriate water safety topics.

Students will work on shallow-angle dive from the side then glide and begin a front stroke, tuck and pike surface dices, submerge completely, front flip turn, backstroke flip turn while swimming, front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke, butterfly, sculling and age-appropriate water safety topics. Shallow-angle dive from the side then glide and begin a front stroke.

Refines the strokes so participants swim them with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Level 6 is designed with “menu” options that focus on preparing participants for more advanced courses, including the Water Safety instructor course, or other aquatic activities, such as competitive swimming or diving. Each option also includes applicable water safety topics.

Level 3 – Stroke Development

Students will build off the skills they learned in Level 2 with additional guided practice in deeper water. They will also work on water safety topics, scissor kicks, breast strokes, front crawl and elementary back strokes.

Our Mission: McKinley Early Childhood Center partners with families to provide support, encouragement and education.

What is ECFE? Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) is a program for all Minnesota families with children between the ages of birth to kindergarten. A typical ECFE class, includes:

Relevant, effective education and support with a group facilitator that encourages a healthy environment for the growth and development of families.

Children’s Activity Time

During parent education time, children explore, gain independence and practice social skills while under the supervision of a licensed teacher and a paraprofessional.

PRESCHOOL

Our preschool curriculum is aligned with the District’s elementary academic program. McKinley uses the OWL, Opening the World of Learning, Curriculum for overall development, and Second Step for social skills. McKinley Preschool uses the Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP) as the building wide assessment. The children will do activities together under the direction of a licensed Early Childhood teacher.

Children who are 3 or 4 years old by Sept 1, 2018 are eligible for preschool. All applications require a $25.00 Non-Refundable fee regardless of income status.

Payment is required at time of registration. A sliding fee scale based on family size and income is available for those who need financial assistance. Young Chefs

Science club is an after school program at Faribault Middle School. Students will observe and participate in experiments, learn about science concepts in a hands on manner, and potentially take a field trip to one of Carleton College’s chemistry labs.

Young Chefs is a program that uses cooking to teach science concepts to students. Students will make various foods such as salsa, chocolate bars, and omelets while learning various science concepts. There will also potentially be a field trip to Carleton College. This is an after school program at Faribault Middle School.

STOPS (Students Together Offering Peer Support) is a student leadership program designed to engage a wide variety of students in service opportunities and encourage peer respect. STOPS is open to all Faribault High School students. STOPS is 100% student-driven.

STOPS activities occur before and after school, on weekends, during the school day, and in the summer!

STOPS students collectively give 2,000 –4,000 hours each year to the community of Faribault. The group focuses on collaborating with partners to create a strong, connected, and caring community. Activities include hosting the annual 5th Grade Lock-In, drug and alcohol prevention work, volunteering at various community events, and much more. STOPS is looking for new members. Members are able to connect with positive peer role models while developing leadership skills.

THE BASICS • Students must turn 15 years of age by the last day of the class period.

• This course consists of the State-required 30 hours of classroom instruction and six hours of Behindthe-Wheel. The classroom prepares students for the written permit test. Upon completion of the classroom and obtaining a driver’s permit, the Driver Education Coordinator schedules Behind-the-Wheel after students have passed the permit test. The Behind-theWheel component prepares students for the road test.

• A student is required to have their permit for six months and be 16 years of age before they are eligible to take the road test for their driver’s license.

COST

• Driver Education costs are $155 for 10 classroom days and $240 for 6 hours of Behind-the-Wheel • The cost for taking classroom elsewhere and taking 6 hours of Behind-the-Wheel sessions with Faribault Community Education is $300 • Money will be forfeited for: • Discipline reasons, or failure to complete the requirements of the course • Missing two or more days of class • If you fail to attend the class you are registered for: • A drop/add fee of $50 will be assessed to register for another class • If money is refunded, $50 will be subtracted from the registration fee

ADULT EDUCATION

A state standard adult high school diploma has been developed and is made available to Minnesota adults through the Adult Education system. This program is designed for students no longer eligible for K-12 services that are 19 years and older. The Adult Diploma program offers different methods to demonstrate Completion of the standard adult diploma program requirements: verified K-12 classes, postsecondary courses, and/or other approved trainings and experiences; test-verified Knowledge; Adult Education instruction; and applied learning projects. In order to graduate With a state standard adult high school diploma and a Faribault Public Schools diploma, Students must complete five competency domains:

Bridges to the Future is a FREE program. It prepares youth ages 14-24 for work and college success.

You can improve your reading, math, and computer skills in just 60 hours. Also includes:       

Project ABLE (Achieving a Better Life through Education) is a program for adults with disabilities that provide social, recreational and educational opportunities. Project ABLE’s staff is delighted to be back for another season!

Tips to help our activities run successfully.

• Please preregister for each class. (Help us be prepared for class and let us know that you are coming.)

Sign up for Monday or Thursday night bowling leagues. This session will be 8 weeks long. The price includes 2 games and bowling shoes. Weekly bowling results will be given each evening. Lanes will be assigned based on requests and needs.

SPECIAL EVENTS Como Zoo Trip

Lions, Tigers and Bears - Oh My!!! Spend the morning walking around the Como Zoo taking in all the animals and their surroundings and then visit all the green spaces in the conservatory. Bring a sack lunch for a picnic, a bottle of water, sunscreen, and money for any treats. Bus transportation will be provided and will pick up at 9 a.m. from Northfield High School and drop off at approximately 3:30 p.m. Accompanying staff will also pay $15 per person.

Have you ever pet a goat? Whether you want to touch and interact with the animals, or you would rather look at them from a distance, you are sure to have fun at the Skyview Ranch Petting Zoo! Some examples of animals you will meet are goats, ponies, bunnies, mini-horses, and so much more!

Refund Policy

Withdrawals & Additions

The Community Education classes are open to any interested person. See the course listing for time, date and location. District 656 will not deny any person the opportunity to participating in any program on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, age, marital status, status with regard to public assistance or disability. Families and school-age children are encouraged to enroll in any classes which are appropriate for their skill level and maturity.

Community Education reserves the right to cancel any activity due to insufficient enrollment. When an activity is canceled, Community Education will make every effort to contact registrants 2 days before the scheduled start of the activity. Complete refunds are given when this occurs. Persons needing to withdraw their registration must do so no later than five business days before the activity is scheduled to start.

A $5.00 per class service fee will be deducted from each refund request. Please remember, if you are unable to attend an activity, you may send someone in your place. ABSOLUTELY no refunds are given to those persons withdrawing less than five business days before the start of an activity. No refunds are given for trips. No exceptions.

Community Education reserves the right to withdraw a course due to lack of enrollment or loss of suitable facilities.

Inclement Weather When bad weather or other emergencies cause cancellation of the regular day school program, Community Education activities scheduled during the day, after school or evening are also cancelled. Because inclement weather is unpredictable and difficult to plan around, class sessions cancelled due to bad weather may not be refunded or rescheduled.
