Ildikó Varga

The most exciting part of design for me is searching for the right answer to the wide range of challenges. I try to tackle each problem with a flexible and open mindset. I always look for the angle in which I can see the issue from a new perspective.
Having spent my childhood in a carpentry workshop, I have a practical mindset, which complements my curiosity for theory and research. For me, pragmatism and empathy are just as important for the design pro cess as feasibility and function.
My aim with each project is to give a clear expression to complex thoughts and solutions. It is important in everything I design that it alligns with my personal values.

Chick Cradle
chick hatchery and personal values.
Theme: pet home.
The Chick Cradle is a chick hatchery which gives a modern twist to this traditional and natural process, based on object culture and methods. The piece intends to raise question around the concept of meat mass production vs small-scale chicken farming and the relationship between people and farm animals.

The Chick Cradle’s filigree metal frame gives an industrial impressi on, which is contrasted by the twist of traditional twig weaving.

The soul of the piece is the exciting moving node, inspired by the functioning concept of a game. It can turn back into itself, thus being able to fulfill both functions – of the basket and of the cover.

Feri education and fermentation.
Feri is an educational toolkit to the fermentation process, to be taught in schools. From the research I learned that people are not aware about the natural process of fermentation. I believe this can be solved through education.
My aim was to create a “living Tamagotchi”, a fermenting tool kit, which aids in the process of fermentation and makes obser ving it an enjoyable experience for the children at school.

Through fermentation CO2 is crea ted, which accumulates in the silico ne, making it “grow”.

Use in school: Children in 5th or 6th grade learn about lac tic acid fermentation, which they practice in science class with the Feri kit.
The learning is aided by a leporello edition, which contains useful information about the process and the children can also use as a diary to track their progress.

The fermentation process can be divided into 4 weeks. The children engage in the project twice a week during classes. At the beginning, during and the end of the process the children view the bacteria under microscope and check the change in acidity.
The transformation of the bacteria flora can be tracked across the 4 weeks with the 4 layers of the stickers – they remove 1 layer each week.

Lumi
snow vehicle and children.
Lumi is a micromobility device for children, which aims to make travel easier on snowy terrain. During the design phase, it was important for me that mobility, play and sport have an equally important role in the piece.

The frame of the vehicle is from plywood.
When choosing the materials, it was an important consideration that they were of natural origin, and, for stability, we combined them with metal. The variable colors and patterns give a playful character to Lumi.

The stability is provided by a ski in the front and a wide wheel in the rear. The mechanical solutions are similar to those of a bike. Rear disk brakes provide safety. The brake cables run through the plywood frame.

Øje collection
moving plains and jewelry.
Theme: object creation.
The Øje (eye) jewelry collection is composed of two moving plains meeting each other.

The collection consists of four elements: a badge, a ring and a pair of Material:earrings.silver.

Eyeline eyeglass and contact lens case.
Eyeline is an eyeglass case, with compartments for contact len ses and contact lens solution. The idea came from a real need: people with contact lenses also use glasses and they are ad vised to always keep a pair with them. Currently, the market does not offer a quality alternative to this. The lens and solution compartments are custom-made and are embedded in a fo amy Eyelinematerial.ismade

Lean On mirror and plywood.
The Lean On mirror is the formal manifestation of a graceful ges ture between two surfaces facing opposite directions. Airy, yet there is tension on the point where the two surfaces meet. This duality is the soul of the concept: a playful, easy gesture kept together by force.
The gesture becomes obvious in side view and the impression of repetition by the plywood highlights the direction and connec tion of the arcs.

The angle of the mirror is adjustable depending on the height of the user.

This is made possible by the connection ele ments: hinge screw (Ø5mm), pad, threaded locking ball. The connection elements go through both segements of the mirror.

The playful gesture in brought into balance by orderly design. For the definition of the arcs I used a circle and the golden ratio. 1,618

Wave panel acustics and light.
The Wave is an acoustic and light panel. The sparsely weaved textile gives it a floating, almost illusion-like impression. Under light, it emits a unique, metallic glow.
By giving the textile a wavelike shape with industrial starch, we created a “hood”, which is fixed on the metallic frame with a Itsmagnet.acoustic
quality is given by a couple of factors: the textile absorbs, the extended wave surface disperses the soundwaves.
