THESIS Learning from Limerick: Transforming Heterotopia into Thirdspace This thesis proposes the transformation of the “heterotopic” landscape surrounding our nuclear power production facilities into a so-called “thirdspace.”

Through the upgrading and replacement of existing reactor systems, the collection and curation of iconic American suburban typologies, the encasement and enclosure of the retired cooling towers, and the arrangement and planning of public and private spaces within, this thesis contends, the “heterotopic landscape” can transform into a place for living.

THESIS Learning from Limerick: Transforming Heterotopia into Thirdspace The shelves lining the tower become neighborhoods, with “the Bungalow,” “the Colonial,” “the Ranch,” and the “McMansion,” all remnants of an earlier paradigm, serving as the primary program to construct and environment that is familiar, but decidedly new.

Within this new environment, processes of energy capture and feedback become entrenched. Waste heat is captured from the reactor processes by repurposing the site’s existing hydraulic system; in tandem with the natural evaporative cooling effect of the tower, year-round acclimatization can be achieved.

NOW WE ARE TRYING TO “FIX” IT

Industrial wealth peaks between World War I and II. Bushwick is a center of culture; the Amphion Theatre is the nation’s first venue with electric lighting.

An influx of immigrants fuels the factories; blue-collar work builds an economic base – the city focuses on renewal.

1977 witnesses arson, vandalism, and blackouts, the Broadway shopping district is burned to the ground.

Vacancy reaches 43%, the city cannot keep pace with the desolation.

Knickerbocker Avenue and “The Well” replace industry with a hotbed of violence – the city turns its back.

There is a disjunction between the transplant trivial and the preexisting community – a new type of violence.

Bushwick is separating. Losing touch with itself.

Bricks, local expression, and a blue-collar industrial past define the Bushwick character.

Bushwick must stand against un-sustainable white washing, Importing an alien philosophy threatens all preexisting culture in its path.

Rising energy costs, advances in transportation, and unrealized urban renewal empty the streets.

Bushwick’s economic base erodes as breweries and industry leave Brooklyn.

By the 1970’s half of Bushwick’s residents are on public assistance.

This must not be!

GENTRIFICATION LAB 7 Stops on the L-Line: Hyperloft

NEW YORK, NY 07.2015

In collaboration with James Marsh In collaboration with the design firms ZUS and With Projects Inc., the Gentrification Lab is a multi-year design and research studio focused on the gradation of gentrification along subway lines in New York City. Seven stops were selected and studied by seven groups, with a design intervention selected for each. The findings were presented in an exhibition at the Van Allen Institute.

Located at Jefferson Station along the L-Line in Bushwick, the Hyperloft aims to hedge the invasion of Williamsburg-esque gentrification; instead maintaining and sustainably growing the existing neighborhood demographic range, feel, and integrity.

SYRACUSE, NY 04.2015

In collaboration with Carly Riley and Joshua Smead.

The integration expands beyond the site, with the structure connecting to the Syracuse Connective Corridor. As a hub for public transportation and non-vehicular traffic, the site welcomes the pedestrian visitor inwards and provides a place for repose and public education.

The building acts as a billboard for the sustainable activities within, transitioning the typical research center typology into one of public consumption. The building literally displays integrated wind technologies.

ARC 6O6 / MAT URBANISM Investigating Flatness The New School In collaboration with James Marsh .

Primitive geometries are manipulated systematically and documented in an extensive iterative process. From here, the form was adapted to meet the constraints of the site and neighboring forms. This new form of mat urbanism develops a form of urban development that strives for flatness.

At the site of a new Boeing mega-factory, the New School interconnects and molds with its surroundings, creating a seamless urban environment where form, program, and urbanity intersect.

As every step of the process must involve drawing, the Boulder House is driven by this concept; using the grid as a means to manage chaos in form manipulation.

This case study investigates our overall contention of the Newhouse III addition; arguing that the optimized connector does not function as intended.

Instead, the project compartmentalizes the school into three separate zones.

Part of a larger investigation, these selected drawings are part of an exhaustive analysis of the building, its systems, and architecture.
