Picasso Sculptor. Matter and Body

Conceived and curated by Carmen Giménez, the first director of the Museo Picasso Málaga, this selection of sculptures presents the plurality of styles employed by Pablo Picasso to expand the forms of the human body, interpreting it in a range of formats and genres and making use of every material available to him, including wood, iron, plaster, cement, steel, and bronze. For Picasso, the discipline of sculpture was not of a secondary nature within his output; he saw it rather as a means of expression comparable to painting, drawing, printmaking, and ceramics given that, as he himself said, no art form is more or less important than any

31 YEARS OF SANI FESTIVAL

Every summer, from July to August, Sani Festival proudly brings together Greek and international artists, strengthening the cultural bond between natives and visitors. Rooted in jazz, the first event took place in 1992 over three days. Since then, the project has diversified and the

other. These languages and materials allowed him to express different aspects of his creativity. While this facet of the artist’s activities began to become more significant and more extensive during the Cubist period, Picasso made sculptures from almost the outset of his lengthy artistic career and continued to focus on them throughout his life. He approached the medium with the freedom of a self-taught artist, prepared to break any rule. Perhaps as a consequence of this attitude, he kept most of his sculptures throughout his life, as numerous photographs of his studios and homes show. Treating them almost like members of

his household, he enjoyed the company of sculptures and relished making them in a range of materials, contexts, and situations. From May 9th to September 10th the Museo Picasso Málaga

is presenting “Picasso Sculptor. Matter and body”, which will also be shown at the Museo Guggenheim Bilbao this autumn.

The Cultural Landscape of the Serra de Tramuntana was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011, as an area of great physical and

Who was Ioannis Capodistrias?

The prominent personality of the Corfiot count Ioannis Capodistrias, first governor of Greece and top European

diplomat of the 19th century, is revealed in the only museum dedicated to him. In Koukouritsa, the Capodistrias’ family estate in the middle of Corfu, you can follow the course of his life, through a narration that begins with his childhood years in the Ionian island and culminates with his assassination in Nafplio.

Christian tombs with their wall-paintings, liturgical vessels, implements for personal adornment, but also humble everyday artefacts and tools for professionals are presented not only as artworks, but also as testimonies of the culture that created them and of the human society that used them.

Archaeological Museum of Kos

Situated in Eleftherias square, in Kos Town, the building that houses the Archaeological Museum of Kos is a listed monument from the Italian era of the island (1912-1943), built in 1936. It hosts an impressive collection of findings covering a long period that spans from the Hellenistic period until the times of the Later Roman Empire. Among its exhibits that include pottery, anaglyphs with various representations, impressive mosaics and statues from the site of Asclepeion, the emblematic statue of Hippocrates of Kos (4th century B.C.), that it has been suggested that represents the famous physician at a young age, is the one that stands out.

The Jewish community of Kos dates from antiquity. The synagogue Kahal Shalom in the historic city center of the island was built in 1935 and in recent years has been used as a cultural center, for lectures and exhibitions.

“I have always been fascinated by the sciences related to symbolism: vexillology, the study of flags, the heraldry of shields and hieroglyphics. In my childhood drawings, I summarized or condensed my emotions through signs or symbols: sadness through a rainy cloud, reward through a crown, gift through a hand, thus creating a universal sign language. To perceive these signs and translate them into a language, it is necessary to decipher them as a riddle of emotions. Thinking of an exhibition for children, it occurred to me to set up an installation

that proposes a world of signs for the peoples of tomorrow who are the boys and girls of today.” The Centre Pompidou Málaga invited Jean-Charles de Castelbajac to the Espacio Joven to awaken the artistic sensibility of boys and girls to draw their attention to the strongest signs of our time. Flags, totems, and emblematic colors of his work from the last fifty years are echoed in the Centre Pompidou Málaga, forming pedagogical devices based on signs, symbols, and universal language. Katerina Katopis-Lykiardopulo Into the blue

The prestigious photographer, traveler and Instagrammer shares some of her best shots in an interview on the joy of traveling.

How many days ago did you return from your latest trip?

From my last trip in Greece, I came back this morning. From my last trip abroad, I came back 10 days ago.

Where was it? For how long?

Switzerland, where I live for a large portion of the year. I was away for about 5 days. In Greece, I was visiting the beautiful lakes of Prespes and Kerkini.

The longest that you have been away from home?

I have lived and studied abroad, namely in the US, UK, and Japan, so I have been away for significant periods of time, not just for traveling. In terms of traveling, probably the longest trip I ever took was the one to Argentina, which lasted about 25 days. I fell in love with the country and decided to stay longer than planned and trek solo around Patagonia.

What do you miss most when you travel?

My morning coffee, exactly the way I like it and prepare it at home.

What do you miss most when you are home?

In all honesty I don’t miss anything, I am just happy to be home. I travel so much that, some times, all I want is to curl up in my sofa with a glass of wine and watch Netflix.

Your best travel memories are from...

...too many to count. I was lucky to have parents who taught me “how to travel” from a young age; to get a sense and feeling for a place, to be alert but not be afraid. I will always cherish my

carefree childhood travel memories, but if I had to choose one of my adult life, this would be from Ecuador: My Spanish speaking guide in the cloud forest told me proudly he was Greek – long story short, his Greek grandfather got off a ship in Guayaquil, fell in love with an Ecuadorian lady, and never came back. All descendants had ancient Greek names, kept all Orthodox traditions and were proud Greeks despite not speaking the language. They had never met anyone from “home” and about 20 of them came to the airport to say goodbye to me, all crying tears of happiness. We are still in touch.

Traveling alone, or with friends and family?

I have done all three at different periods of my life, and they all have their charm. Now I am lucky to enjoy my travels with my husband who loves exploring as much as I do.

“I was lucky to have parents who taught me ‘how to travel’ from a young age; to get a sense and feeling for a place.”
Katerina Katopis in Schoinoussa island, chating with local ladies.
25 IKOS RESORTS INTERVIEW
Patmos island with white-washed houses and vibrant fuchsia bougainvilleas.

Your most challenging travel experience was...

...when I was wrongly detained at customs in Vietnam, in 1996, as I was departing the country. I have to admit it was a bit scary, but the country had just opened up to foreign travelers, and they were not so familiar with a lot of passports – including the Greek one!

A destination that you love coming back to?

In Europe it is Lisbon, Capri and Como, in the Americas it is Cartagena, in Africa it is Cape Town and Namibia, and in Asia it is Tokyo where I also used to live. If it were not that far, I would return every year to Fiji and Bora Bora. My favorite destination though is Greece, and the more I travel the more I realize how blessed we all are to live in the most beautiful country in the world.

Your favorite destinations in the Mediterranean?

Undoubtedly the Greek islands. I come from Thessaloniki, so Halkidiki holds a special place in my heart. I also love Amalfi and the South of France.

The crystal clear waters of Irakleia island in the heart of the Aegean.
“I love exploring empty beaches accessible only by boat and discovering local produce and craftsmanship – but above all, I love the Greek ‘philoxenia’.”
26 IKOS RESORTS INTERVIEW
Como is one of the photographer’s favorite destinations.

Karl Lagerfeld once said that what he likes most about photographs is that they capture a moment that is gone forever, impossible to reproduce. Do you agree?

I definitely do, yet I wholeheartedly believe that certain moments cannot be captured in a photograph; they need to be experienced and lived to the fullest, and in order to do that you need to be free and not be anxious to capture them in a photo. A picture is worth a thousand words, but a memory lasts a lifetime.

In “Greek Islands” by Assouline you have captured the light and numerous textures of the islands in the most successful way. What do you think makes these islands unique? What do you like most about this part of the world?

Thank you for your kind words. Our islands are so special and striking, yet each one of them is so different and has its own story to tell. I am thankful and happy I was able to tell part of their story with my photos through this exceptional international publication. I think that what makes this part of the world so unique is the light and the energy. The energy of the land, its people, and the powerful Aegean sea, juxtaposed against the white-washed houses, the vibrant fuchsia bougainvillea and all hues of blues, is just magical. I love the

colors, the light, the sea breeze, and the spray of the sea when sailing. I love exploring empty beaches accessible only by boat and discovering local produce and craftsmanship – but above all, I love the Greek “philoxenia” (philos: friend, xenia: hospitality); wherever you go, the locals make you feel like home.

A source of inspiration?

Nature, light, the sea, “National Geographic” magazines and documentaries, and several accounts of Instagram. I am always inspired by explorers and pioneers, like Amelia Earhart and Ernest Shackleton, by authors and poets like Lawrence Durrell, Jack Kerouac and Cavafy, but mostly I am inspired by everyday people who set out to follow their dreams – whatever those are.

What is your next travel destination?

At the time of writing this, my next trip will be to London to run the marathon, but I don’t really count it as a destination. My next travel destination will be Costa Rica.

Astypalaia is on the crossroads between the Cyclades and the Dodecanese islands.

Here on the south coast of Spain, walking through the narrow streets of the old town, with traditional houses reminding of the past and its smooth passing into the present, the visitor enjoys moments of peace, relaxation, and pleasure. The old town of Marbella, or Casco Antiguo, is the historic area of Marbella located in the heart of the town, just minutes away from the famous promenade, the Paseo Maritimo. The streets are lined with small shops selling souvenirs and local products such as olive oil, wine, and handicrafts. The houses and buildings are painted in bright colors and decorated with flowers and plants, giving the town a charming and welcoming atmosphere.

One of the most famous landmarks of the old town in Marbella is the Plaza de los Naranjos, a square of orange trees surrounded by restaurants and cafes. It is a popular meeting point for locals and visitors alike. Another feature of the old town are the walls and the ruins of an old Arab castle, which offer a stunning view of the city and the sea. There are also many churches worth visiting, such as the Church of the Incarnation and the Chapel of San Juan de Dios.

Orange Trees Square

Orange Trees, or Los Naranjos, is a picturesque square located in the heart of the old town. The square was named after the dozens of orange trees that grow throughout the area, providing a fragrant and charming backdrop for visitors.

The Orange Trees Square is part of Marbella’s historical and cultural heritage, dating back to the Castilian Renaissance in the 15th century. At that time, the town was an important commercial and cultural center, attracting artists, writers, and architects who left their mark on the urban landscape.

It is surrounded by traditional Andalusian-style houses with whitewashed walls and wrought iron balconies. It has a central fountain and many benches that invite guests to sit and enjoy the view. The orange trees, which bloom in spring and bear fruit in winter, add a touch of color to the square year-round.

It is a popular spot for both locals and tourists, hosting a variety of events throughout the year, including music concerts, art exhibitions, and cultural festivals. It is also home to the Town Hall, a beautiful Renaissance-style building dating back to the 16th century.

Highlights Of The Old Town

The old town is a charming area filled with traditional Andalusian architecture. Its narrow streets are lined with white-washed buildings adorned with ornate balconies and potted plants, following traditional Andalusian architecture. One of the most characteristic examples of this architecture is the Iglesia de la Encarnación, a 16th-century church with a baroque-style façade. It is worth noting the beautiful marble gateway and the bell tower.

The square is shaded by orange trees, and there are many cafes and restaurants where visitors can relax and enjoy the atmosphere. The impressive 16th-century Casa del Corregidor mansion was once the residence of the mayor of the city, and the building, with its beautiful inner courtyard, is a traditional Andalusian feature.

The small 15th-century chapel, Ermita de Santiago, is one of the oldest buildings in Marbella. The white-washed façade is adorned with a simple bell tower and the interior is decorated with frescoes depicting scenes from the life of St. James.

The old town is surrounded by a set of medieval walls built in the 10th century. Visitors can walk along the walls and enjoy panoramic views of the city and the sea.

Flowers And Pots

Marbella’s old town is known for its beautiful streets full of colorful flower pots. Visitors and locals alike enjoy wandering the narrow streets and admiring the flowers that adorn the buildings and balconies.

Planters come in all shapes and sizes, from small ones placed on windowsills to large ones hanging from balconies. The most common flowers seen in these pots are geraniums, petunias, and bougainvilleas, which add a touch of color to the charming white-washed buildings.

The tradition of decorating with pots began many years ago, when locals started adding them to the exterior of their houses. Over time, the practice caught on and is now an iconic feature of the city. In addition to being visually appealing, planters serve a practical purpose, providing shade and keeping buildings cool during the hot summer months.

As you wander around the old town, these beautiful flower pots will catch your eye and give you a strong sense of the vibrant and colorful character of the city.

Decorated horses for celebration.

You have probably seen Andalusian horses in blockbuster films ranging from “Gladiator” and “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” to “Interview with the Vampire” and “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. Their ancestors lived in Spain for thousands of years and from the 15th century onwards they were recognized as a distinct race; pura raza española. Throughout history, they were known for their prowess as war horses, were prized by the nobility – kings across Europe rode and owned them – and used as a tool of diplomacy by the Spanish government. In 1973, the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art (Spanish: Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre) was established as an institution dedicated to the preservation of the equestrian art in the Spanish tradition. It is based in Jerez de la Frontera, in the autonomous community of Andalusia, Spain, and is considered one of the most prestigious classical riding academies in the world.

An Art Preserved

The School is dedicated to preserving the ancestral abilities of the Andalusian horses, to maintaining the classical traditions of Spanish baroque horsemanship, to preparing horses and riders for international equestrian competitions, and to providing training in all aspects of riding, coach-driving, blacksmithing, horse care and breeding, saddlery, and harness making and care. It is also is well known for its “dancing stallions” shows. The school is adjacent to the historic 19th-century Recreo de las Cadenas.

An Equestrian Ballet Worth-Seeing

The unique show “How the Andalusian Horses Dance” is an equestrian ballet accompanied by quintessential Spanish music and 18th-century styled costumes, all together and choreographed with movements based on Classical Dressage, Doma Vaquera (country-style riding) and traditional equestrian chores. Each performance consists of six to eight different choreographies, with the same degree of difficulty and entertainment value, designed by the school according to a set repertoire.

This is the most prestigious equestrian trophy awarded annually in Spain in recognition of the dedication and done out for the horse. In honor of this award, Álvaro Domecq presented for the very first time his show “How the Andalusian Horses Dance”, such event representing the origin of the Foundation of the School.

In its initial stage the School developed under the personal management of its creator but, later, the Ministry of Information and Tourism of Spain decided to take charge, purchasing the “Recreo de Las Cadenas” to this end from the

Duke of Abrantes, and an arena was built by the architect José Luis Picardo, which could seat up to 1,600 spectators and had stable facilities for 60 horses.

In 1982 the Ministry handed over the running of the School to a Governing Body, under the charge of the Cadiz Provincial Council, thus promoting the re-launch of the school at both a national and international level. The next year, the Governing Body purchased the School and after public tender the post of Technical Director was awarded to its creator and founder, Don Álvaro Domecq Romero.

Since 1986 the Governing Body has surpassed even the most optimistic expectations, having been able to provide the Institution with all its economic, personnel, and technical requirements. It was in this year that the School acquired the stables of Don Pedro Domecq de la Riva, which consisted of thirty-five Spanish breed horses and a wonderful collection of nineteen horse-drawn carriages and their corresponding harnesses, some dating back to 1730, along with saddles and embroidered clothes for both horses and coachmen, all pieces of incalculable historical value.

In June 1987 His Majesty the King received the members of the Governing Body in audience at the Zarzuela Palace, accepting the post of honorary President and conferring the title of “Royal School” to the Institution. Since October 15th of the same year, Their Majesties King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía have presided over the inaugural events from the Royal Box in the arena of the Royal School Foundation. In July 2003 the previous Governing Body became the Foundation, thus obtaining greater legal entity and allowing it to receive private finance for future development. Although apparently the show “How the Andalusian Horses Dance” is considered the maximum exponent of the School’s work, there are other aspects which are regarded as equally, or even more important for the Institution.

Among these, the Institution has a serious role as a social and cultural vehicle for the Spanish equestrian heritage, the selection and promotion of horses, the training of Haute École riders, the preservation and promotion of Classical and Country Dressage (Doma Vaquera), maintaining the prestige of the Spanish horsemanship, the breed of Spanish horses, their traditions and culture. Furthermore, the show enables the Royal School to play host to the Province of Cadiz and to act as ambassadors abroad on annual tours to different foreign countries.

II don’t know if the sea wins me over, but every time the off the beaten track perspective of a place and the mountainous, even “behind the headlights”, version enters the equation, I have a special desire to meet it. I feel that, in this way, the truth of a place speaks, the essence of things, the depth of people’s feelings. The same thing happened to me in Halkidiki where – before I was completely seduced by the sea view – I was lucky enough to get to know Mount Holomontas, the green mountain that dominates its mainland with an altitude of more than 1,100 meters, with beautiful mountain villages, and food that only takes me a few seconds to bring back to memory. To be honest, I’m not sure if I loved more the place OR its flavors; there is no room for disjunctive conjunctions here. I loved both the place AND its flavors.

Moving inland, you can’t help but adore the century-old oaks and thousands of straight fir trees that cover the slopes of Holomontas. Same with the stone cobbled streets in the villages, and the bright colors of the Macedonian architecture of the houses. I loved the wooden “shachnissia”, the covered balconies – extensions of the living room of each house to let the sun shine in better – that stick out boldly and try to steal some northern Greek light. At a cafe in the shade of one of these balconies, I tasted a pancake with red mushrooms and drank for the first time moudovina, the local tsipouro, in the distillation of which honey is equally involved.

Then it was time for Taxiarchis, a beautiful settlement in the heart of the mountain where a university forest of amazing biodiversity was created to train the foresters of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. I took a seat at “Synantisi” (The Meeting), the vintage cafe of the small square which turned out to be an amazing place to eat as well. Potato omelettes arrived first, followed by a super fresh salad and finally a platter of local grilled meats; this was a perfect meeting with taste. The dessert, a sour cherry spoon sweet that suddenly came to sweeten this mountain experience even more, is still hard to forget.

Apart from fir and oak trees, Holomontas also has beautiful vineyards. And of course a winery. Early in the morning we set off for Arnaia. There, at the estate of Claudia Papagianni, we remembered with nostalgia our first time as visitors several years ago, at a time when it was just starting to operate, and we went back for a moment to our youth! We have never forgotten this special experience of tasting wines from new vineyards and tracing their special features. This time, a decade later, we enjoyed a Grenache Rouge rosé, an elegant wine with an air of Provence but with the character of Halkidiki, reminding us that the terroir comes always first.

Ormylia And The Plain

The Island Of Halkidiki

We decided to leave the fabulous beaches on all three “legs” of Halkidiki out of this wander. The mountain and plain experience needed to be complemented with one of a real island. Halkidiki has that too: Ammouliani, just 15 minutes from Tripiti. In the bay of Mount Athos, the islet – an old metochi of Vatopedi Monastery – which was given to refugees after the Asia Minor Catastrophe, is a small paradise, especially in spring when tourism is within reasonable bounds. Spring dives at Karagatsi and Anemotrata, grilled octopus with greens, and ouzo elevated the experience.

Taxiarchis is a traditional village which is located in the heart of Mount Holomontas.

If you think of Halkidiki as a place with only beaches and mountains, well this will surprise you. It also has plains, fertile and productive ones. In one of them, between the first and second “foot”, stands a very important nunnery: The Monastery of Ormylia, Holy Community of Evangelism, an Athonite metochi with a long history, which is today a beehive of multi-talented and hard-working nuns who have decided to make the belief that every monastery is a piece of heaven in the world a reality. A lush olive grove, dozens of fruit trees with apple, pear, orange, and tangerine trees, with the spring apricot and peach trees will welcome you in abundance. Their table olives lived up to the reputation of Halkidiki olives; their olive oil smelled still like green olive oil more than five months after harvesting. Later, we found ourselves in Vrastama, to fill our minds with even more beautiful images.

With A Tasty Book In Hand

This whole tour had a point of reference that I actually carried with me; a book-hymn to monastic flavors and the gastronomic culture of monasteries written by Paola Psarrou: “The Cook’s Apples”. It was fun to realize that even

though I hadn’t had time on this trip to actually set foot on Mount Athos, I was reading a book about monastic cuisine – and by a woman author.

The Beaches In Halkidiki

It is that unique smell, indelibly imprinted in the mind, that comes and balances with the summer heat and the saltiness of the sea. It is the colors of the waters from all across the spectrum of blue and green that adorn the shores of Halkidiki. It is the wind-free beaches with natural shelters. It is Fokospilies, Kavourotripes, and the magical little islands from Diaporos to Ammouliani.

Deserted, undiscovered, or bustling with famous bands and beach bars serving delicious cocktails in the middle of the day, at sunset, or under the starry sky. For the music tunes that come and find you where the waves crash, and for dozens of other reasons, the beaches of Halkidiki are one-of-a-kind.

• KAVOUROTRIPES - SITHONIA

Chances are you have heard of it even if the road has never brought you to it. It is one of the most famous beaches in Halkidiki with turquoise waters, white rocks, and beautiful sand dunes. The kind of beach that gives our summers something of their lost charm, that authentic look and the timeless value of simplicity.

• POSSIDI - KASSANDRA

In Possidi you will find three beaches with the largest of them being that of Aigaiopelagitika, a sandy beach with amazing blue waters located on the northern side of Akrotiri. One of the most impressive beaches of Halkidiki, the sandy Miti, is in front of the lighthouse of the cape.

• VOURVOUROU

This is the most exotic beach in Sithonia, which could be easily described as similar to the beaches of the Caribbean. The white sand and turquoise waters are magnificent. To reach deeper waters you have to walk about 30-40 meters.

A beautiful island full of surprises from one end to the other, with the ability to constantly amaze you; subversive and mysterious at the same time, with its deeply engraved history permeating all its facets, Corfu has the privilege of enchanting the visitor even before he sets foot on the island. Through the sounds, through the images that reach every corner of the world, it becomes the gathering place of all those seeking culture, entertainment, history, and even the place to live!

Experiencing The Cantons

Among the most interesting and amusing things to do in Corfu, available to every visitor, is to walk through the cantons of the old town, following the stone alleys leading from one fortress to another or from the coastal roads to the dense labyrinth of streets, churches, and squares. Of course, the part of the old town that attracts crowds like a magnet is Spianada with its elegant arches and emblematic square. However, you shouldn’t miss a stroll through the picturesque setting of the Old Town Hall Square. A beautiful area surrounded by buildings that stand witness to Corfu’s Venetian past.

The Old Town Hall Square

Though its rich history is largely linked to the island’s Venetian period, the Square remains a favorite meeting point even today, both for locals, who often choose it for an evening drink in a relaxed atmosphere, and for visitors, who are fascinated by the authenticity and charm of the old buildings that surround it.

The Iconic Building Of The Old Town Hall

The downward slope of the square intensifies the impression of the Old Town Hall building is in the center of the whole area. It is one of the most imposing and elegant edifices of the Venetian period, standing there for more than three centuries. Since its inauguration, in 1691, it immediately became the famous meeting point of Venetian aristocracy and local society, functioning similarly to the Italian Loggia dei Nobili.

The entire Old Town of Corfu is a true monument and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The First Center Of The Greek Lyric Scene

A few years later, in 1720, the Old Town Hall housed the San Giacomo Opera House, named after the homonymous Catholic cathedral located in the same square. It was the first center of the Greek lyric scene and one of the most well-known theaters in Europe, attracting famous Italian composers and artists for almost two centuries. Important operas by Antonio Vivaldi have been staged there, including the premiere of his work “Juditha Triumphans”, before being performed at the famous La Scala in Milan. The contribution of the lyric stage to the shaping of the Ionian musical culture as a mixture of Italian and Corfu traditions was great beyond any doubt. In 1903, when the theater was moved to another location, a second floor was added to the building and it was again used as the Town Hall. The ornate exterior decoration with carved masks and reliefs of historical scenes remains untouched to this day, as does the coat of arms of Corfu above the main gate of the building. In its elegant interior there are many elements that speak of its glorious past; the mayor’s office with its red carpet, the frescoes on the ceiling, the carefully preserved old furniture. It is also full of portraits of important personalities who left their mark on Corfu and contributed to its cultural and political flourishing.

The Catholic Church, Duomo

Another iconic building on the square is the Catholic church, Duomo or San Giacomo, which took the place of the old Catholic cathedral once being inside the Old Fortress.

The Old Town Hall building is one of the most imposing and elegant edifices of the Venetian period, standing there for more than three centuries.

Although it is not clear when it was built, historical sources record that it was severely damaged during the second Ottoman siege of Corfu (1571) and rebuilt in the mid-17th century. The construction we see today, in the characteristic late baroque style of many Venetian churches, is the result of the external renovation that took place in the 20th century.

At Guildford Street

A favorite morning stop for locals is the small bakery-cafe “Starenio”, at the northern end of the square, on Guilford Street. For years, the ever-smiling owner and helpful staff have been serving a wide variety of delicious homemade pies on the small tables spread out along the downhill pedestrian walkway; you will find classic options, but also twists, with original combinations of ingredients in the filling. The small and well-kept shop is therefore a very picturesque spot to try local delicacies. Along with your coffee or juice, you can also try the handmade biscuits or one of the tempting pastries of the day, such as the excellent apple pie.

Among the shops that are everywhere, the one that will definitely catch your attention, located almost next to “Starenio”, is the beautiful “Lily Fleur” flower shop, with its wonderful bouquets of fresh and dried flowers lined up on an outdoor wooden bench, which really graces the street. Guilford Street is one of the most beautiful pedestrian walkways in Corfu’s old town, with ivy and vines running from one balcony to the next, like garlands. There are also plenty of dining options, as well as local artist and designer workshops where you’ll find unique clothing, handmade accessories, and special decorative items.

As the sun sets and night falls, the square takes on a new glow, with elegantly lit buildings and popular bars setting up tables and colorful seating in front of the imposing Old Town Hall building. Especially in spring and summer, when young people flood even the flower-filled steps of the piazza – enjoying their drinks and the light atmosphere – this setting full of Venetian charm becomes one of the best ways to end the day in the beautiful old town of Corfu.

Corfu is a place with a great artistic tradition and a plethora of European influences. Back in the 19th century a dominant trend in Europe appeared, which encouraged the creation of clubs and societies for the promotion of the arts. Thus, the first philharmonic orchestra was founded on the island in 1840; today melodies from 18 different philharmonic orchestras offer Corfu a magical atmosphere on every occasion.

In addition to the philharmonic orchestras, international music festivals, gastronomic celebrations, and numerous religious events, with great pomp and circumstance, bring the island to life throughout the year. Whatever the season, the traveler in Corfu will feel the pulse of music and culture!

Every single time that the first day of the month is Sunday, the musicians of the philharmonic orchestras, with their long-standing impressive

Cuniforms, pour out into the streets and fill the cantons of Corfu with music.

During the days of the carnival, which is celebrated here with clear influences from the Italian Commedia del’ Arte, sounds and melodies play, taking the visitor back to the medieval West. At the most famous Easter in Greece, Easter in Corfu, music plays a dominant role.

Throughout the Holy Week, art-lovers will enjoy philharmonic concerts with hymns of the Holy Week, poetry nights in historical monuments of the city, but also the solemn procession of the Epitaphs under the sounds of the philharmonic orchestras and the melodic voices of the Corfiot choirs.

The polyphonic church music, which spills out of the churches in the city cantons, is truly special. This harmonious chanting is a peculiar tetraphony, with roots that go back centuries.

Sani Ikos Group actively enhances the cultural footprint of Corfu’s philharmonic orchestras by contributing to their operations through sponsorships and any other means possible. In particular, the Group supports the Philharmonic Society of Corfu, “Palea”, which was founded in 1840 and to this day provides free music education

to the young people of Corfu. Same is the case with the Manzaros Philharmonic Society, which has been operating continuously since its foundation in 1890. At the same time, the Group supports the operation of the “Spyros Samaras” Korakiana Philharmonic Society, which is attended by 56 students.

Litanies of the tabernacle of Saint Spyridon, accompanied by philharmonic bands, are held on Palm Sunday, Holy Saturday morning, on August 11, and the first Sunday of November, and are a magnificent experience.

Especially on the Holy Saturday morning, along with the “botides” tradition, clay pots filled with water which locals throw from their windows after the first Resurrection, the members of the philharmonic bands, playing their tunes, set the tone of the victory of life and the real Resurrection.

Throughout July, the Ionian Concerts International Festival of Corfu fills the island with the sounds and music of great artists from all over the world. High level musical performances in historical venues of unique aesthetics, as well as seminars, lectures, and discussions about the musical universe, make the whole island a melodic workshop.

In the same month, dancers swirl at the Folkloric Dance Groups Festival in Benitses and choristers from all over Greece join their voices at the Choir Meeting held on the island.

In August, the “barcaroles”, a kind of singing combined with boating, usually during the evening hours, are the most popular. At the port of Alypa in Paleokastritsa, at the bridge of the Lefkimmi river, songs, dances, fireworks, and events make the nights of Corfu magical. The gastronomic celebrations on the island, the Sardine Festival in Benitses Square and the Wine Festival in Arillas, are also accompanied by music.

Finally, the religious festivals on the island, especially during the period from Easter to October, still function in people’s consciousness as links with the past and tradition. In the churches, squares, and other suitable places in the villages and districts, a “pavioni” or “parko” is set up, a wooden platform with tables and benches around it, while the surrounding area is decorated with myrtle and cherry tree aromatic branches. Music plays a dominant role, the violin is always present, and the locals lead the Corfiot sirto dance.

STRONGLY INFLUENCED BY VENETIAN ARCHITECTURE, KOS IS KNOWN FOR ITS UNIQUE URBAN DIVERSITY AND ARCHITECTURE. by

EXPLORE

WWith extensive and significant influences from Italian architecture, Kos is, among other things, a famous destination for its buildings. Typical examples are the Town Hall and the Administration Building, which date back to the pre-earthquake era, and the post-earthquake buildings such as the Aegli building in Eleftherias Square, the Archaeological Museum, and the Municipal Market. At the same time, observing it, it becomes clear that it has been influenced by other conquerors, such as the Ottomans; during their long period of rule, the cities resembled large bazaars with shopping streets, mosques, and springs.

However, when referring to Kos and its buildings, one cannot fail to mention the devastating earthquake of 1933 and the reconstruction that was carried out by the conquerors of that time, the Italians. According to the urban plan they implemented, the town of Kos was divided into three residential zones based on the economic status of the citizens. Thus, the northern part was designed with small houses for the weaker economic classes, the central part with two-storey houses and shops which were given to the bourgeoisie and the eastern part was built with villas and a large surrounding area.

After the war and the unification of Kos with the rest of Greece, the island boomed in tourism and as a consequence large hotels were built to enhance this development. The traditional architecture of low houses, with simple walls and flat roofs, most of them parallelogram-shaped, in white with colored doors and windows, gave way to modern buildings. The visitor can still enjoy the traditional architecture and the narrow, stone-paved streets in several villages, such as Asfendiou, Pyli, Kefalos, and Antimachia; in the last you will find traditional windmills.

But let’s take things from the beginning. It was the Italians who designed the center of the new Kos, creating a commercial and entertainment center that is still useful today and shapes the surrounding area. The administrative building, one of the most important and

iconic buildings of the center, was constructed shortly before 1930, following closely the plans of the Italian architect Florestano di Fausto, the same architect who had designed the administrative building in Rhodes. It is a three-storey edifice, a typical example of Italian eclecticism that stands out with its imposing presence in the area. At the main entrance, located on the coastal avenue, Akti Miaouli, apart from the wonderful pebbled stairs, there is a very beautiful marble sculpture of an archaic sphinx, the work and donation by Antonios N. Hadjimichael to the District of Kos. This building has played an important role in the history of the island, as during the period of Italian rule (1929-1943) it was the seat of the Italian-fascist administration, the police, and the courts. Later, during the Italian-German occupation (1943-1945), the Nazi military services were also housed here, while from 1945-1947 it was the headquarters of the British Administration. A very important moment for the building, and not only, was the 31st of March 1947, when the Greek flag was raised. Today, it is the seat of the District of Kos, the Courts and the Greek Police.

The buildings constructed after the 1933 earthquake differ significantly; the Town Hall, the General Hospital, the Administration Building and various others, which were built before the earthquake, incorporate elements of eclecticism, while those built after the earthquake have elements of rationalism and fascist architecture.

It was the Italians who designed the center of the new Kos, creating a commercial and entertainment center that is still useful today and shapes the surrounding area.

If we had to describe the jet set beach style of the 50s in just one photo, then we would surely refer to the iconic shot from the legendary “To Catch a Thief” with Grace Kelly and Cary Grant.

The two movie stars exuded elegance even on a crowded beach. Kelly catches the eye, albeit aloof, in a black halter neck one-piece swimsuit, black turban, and white-framed sunglasses. In the film we also admire her in a shocking beachwear ensemble of a black swimsuit, white airy linen skirt that ties at the waist revealing black capri pants from the inside, and wide-legged white hat. Her looks – created by renowned Hollywood costume designer Edith Head – iconic and timeless. The wardrobe of Frances Stevens, the spoiled aristocratic enchante who is holidaying on the Côte d’Azur, also features a pale yellow monochrome ensemble again with a one-piece and skirt, and turban. Next to her, the irresistibly charming Cary Grant walks around in cool sass and monochrome or plaid swim shorts, T-shirts with scarves, and espadrilles.

Somewhere in the same decade, Maria Callas makes diva -worthy appearances on the deck of the yacht “Christina” and in various popular seaside resorts. Wearing one-piece

floral swimsuits that show off her hourglass figure, and without parting with her signature chignon and glittering jewelry, she launches a grand and glamorous beach style that leaves a lasting impression.

In the 60s the jet-setters’ style is freed along with the perceptions of a society that wants to take steps forward in terms of equality and human rights. Jackie O may hide her eyes behind huge sunglasses that eventually become the signature of her style, but she is nevertheless quite revealing when she bathes in Scorpio or Porto Fino, wearing little bikinis and mini sleeveless dresses and teaching lessons in unpretentious elegance. Together with her sister and also style icon, Lee Radziwill, they create a sensation in the alleys of Hydra when they appear in capri pants, simple T-shirts and scarves in their hair.

In the 70s women’s hair is now left to dry carefree in the sun, tanning is becoming fashionable and the resorts that attract jet-setters each have their own style rules, which the most up-to-date visitors should embrace! The dress code sometimes dictates sandals embellished with stones by local artisans and psychedelic beach sets by local designers who specialize in them such as Emilio Pucci in Capri. In Greece, which is living the golden age of tourism, ancient Greek leather sandals and woven loom caftans are becoming the ones adopted by famous visitors such as the Beatles and Soraya. At the same time, Yves Saint Laurent’s Marrakech entourage dresses up in colorful lahars and arabesque details. His muse Loulou de la Falaise is photographed with flowers in her hair, voluminous local art jewellery, and turban.

In the 80s, Caroline of Monaco is the beautiful jet -setter that the paparazzi love to photograph. She may frequent the beaches of the Côte d’Azur in Lacoste and bandanas, but her wild little sister Stéphanie is shocking

when photographed in a thong swimsuit and a white shirt tied at the waist, she is a trend-setter nonetheless! Their gang of international jet-setter boys wear black Wayfarer glasses and printed shorts like Tom Cruise in the movies of the time.

The decade was to be marked by the arrival of a woman who became a legend for both her style and personality; the world was introduced to the wife of Charles, Prince of Wales Diana, and was enchanted without a moment’s pause to watch her until her tragic and unexpected end. Lady D leaves a legacy of a series of timeless looks on her holidays in exotic locations and Mediterranean destinations, where she usually appears elegantly sporting one-piece swimsuits, pareos, visors, and linen shorts. As the years go by, the looks of stylish jet-setters continue to inspire contemporary houses and influence fashion, proving their uniqueness and their timeless charm.

The positive impact of TRAVELING on our psychology

Holidays take us out of our daily routine and into new experiences. This can reset our body and mind, boosting happiness.

107 IKOS RESORTS PSYCHOLOGY

Engage into more physical activities.

108 IKOS RESORTS PSYCHOLOGY

The desire to travel is deep rooted and it has its own history. There is a reason for this. Holiday is the time of the year when we take a pause and see what we really seek, what we really crave from life. In the exhilaration of being in a new place, in the comfort of a resort, surrounded by the sea and sun, with access to recreational experiences, we can appreciate what we already have or find ways to make changes that will have a positive impact in our lives. In any case, traveling makes us grow. Let’s see 5+1 ways that this happens.

TRAVELING MAKES US GROW! THIS IS HOW:

1. The desire to travel, to change scenery and discover new places is in our genes. Plus, the process of learning something new helps keeping our brain stimulated and active. This has a huge positive impact to our mental health.

2. When we are on holidays, we improve our cognition by disrupting our routines, something that forces our brain to get out of its comfort zone – yes, that makes us more clever, as well.

3. Holiday places us in new surroundings away from everything that we are used to, in our everyday lives, making us appreciate more what we have.

4. Experiences abroad change our mindset for the better. These moments spent in a totally different culture allow us to an open mind, to try new things we may not have tried before, and this is one of the biggest benefits.

5. Holidays can boost our creativity. Inspire us to take a new hobby, or even help us reveal that undercover artist hidden somewhere deep inside.

6. During our holidays we live our lives to the fullest, the way we want them to be, freed from our socially constructed fears or the set expectations that other people have from us.

Go off the beaten track. Try a different route and discover something new.

Choosing an Ikos Resort for your vacation means that you have already taken a step closer towards a more sustainable living. All Ikos Resorts are actively committed to establishing greener operations, supporting local communities and protecting local biodiversity, through the awarded Ikos Green programme. Reducing energy consumption, water usage and waste, investing in solar panels, LED lights and heat pumps, composting organic waste and reusing all greywater are all part of the Ikos philosophy and ESG practices interwoven to the Ikos Resorts’ DNA. An inspiring set of initiatives, that can show us the way to make more sustainable choices in our daily lives and help create a more sustainable world for future generations. There are many enjoyable ways

to be kind to the planet without denying ourselves any new experience, luxury or comfort. On the contrary! Opting for clothes made of natural fabrics or prioritizing locally sourced food are just two of those ways. By making such small positive changes we are contributing to a world with fewer gas emissions, more forestlands, and cleaner oceans. The future of our planet depends not only on the decisions of big corporations but also on the will of people like us. Sustainability is a personal ethic, a new mindset aligned with living in a respectful and non-abusive way towards the planet. So here are some ideas we have handpicked for how we can make a positive impact with small, easy changes in our daily lives.

Sustainable Dining

Avoiding food waste is rule No1, but there is more

than that. One of the best ways to consider our planet is to adopt a more plant-based diet. This doesn’t mean converting to veganism, but opting for mainly cruelty-free dairy products and meat that comes from ethically raised animals. Moreover, a detailed shopping list when visiting the supermarket would be a great help in reducing food waste. What’s more, either we choose to dine out or eat at home we should try selecting local, organic, and seasonal foods.

Sustainable Wellness

Discovering new, sustainable ways of pampering ourselves is a dive into a fantastic world of pleasure! Skin care, hair care, makeup and personal care products of high quality are available for all. Made with natural ingredients in eco packaging, they are no threat to the environment. On the contrary. Sustainable cosmetics are beneficial to the environment, as they keep plastic, heavy metals, and toxic chemicals away from our waterways, soil, atmosphere, and our skin!

Sustainable Fashion

Rethinking the way we shop for clothes, shoes and accessories is the first step to supporting a more sus-

tainable fashion industry. A great start would be to avoid fast fashion products as they are not made to last. Then we should consider factors such as where are the clothes made (locality is always a plus), and of what fabrics (natural fabrics are the less harmful to the environment), as well as whether we plan to wear them for a long time or not. Supporting the eco-conscious brands will help the entire industry move towards more sustainable operations, which will be a great benefit in the long term. Equality, social justice, animal welfare and ecological integrity, are all parts of a sustainable fashion industry and we can play an important role in pursuing them.

The Way You Live

• Change the light bulbs of your house to energy saving.

• Stop buying things you do not need.

• Use towels instead of handkerchiefs, when possible.

• Reuse what can be reused and recycle what cannot.

• Use eco detergents to clean your house.

With a commitment to take action against climate change and pollution, the Ikos Green programme has set an ambitious triple zero target: Net Zero by 2030, Zero Plastic and Zero Waste to landfill by the end of 2024. All Ikos Resorts run on renewable electricity sources with guarantees of origin and have drastically reduced single-use plastics, while advanced systems and processes are in place for reducing, recycling, reusing, and composting organic and non-organic waste.

On the road

Take the amazing, eco-friendly Tesla car provided by Ikos Resorts on an adventure to explore the spectacular surroundings of the hotel you stay at. by Panagiotis Koustas

No matter which Ikos Resort you choose to stay at, grab the chance to discover the local landscape and culture at your leisure, as part of your holiday experience. The best way to do it is by hoping in a Tesla – provided for free as part of the Ikos’ sustainable Local Drive Adventure service – and then start meandering through all historic towns, picturesque coastlines or winding mountain roads, in an eco-friendly ride.

Experience The Local Drive Adventure

What you will experience with your Tesla Model 3 (its use is complimentary for a whole day) depends on where you are located. One thing is for sure, though; the sensation will be unforgettable, whether you head to the lush mountains and discover the charming Andalusian villages, or explore at your own pace the neoclassical architecture of Corfu’s Unesco -listed old town, or plunge into ancient history among the archaeological treasures of Kos, or pass through the palm tree-lined promenades of the Costa del Sol, or drive among the hills of lush green Halkidiki.

Tip: The green experience is elevated to new heights for the Deluxe Collection guests, who will have the opportunity to enjoy the upgraded Tesla Model Y.

Why Tesla?

Electric vehicles (EVs), like Tesla, are more sustainable than internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Furthermore, the environmental impact of its zero-emission transport and energy products is undeniably more positive than the GHG-emitting alternatives. This becomes more pronounced when determining the lifetime impact of EVs versus ICE vehicles and when taking into account the entire lifecycle, from raw materials to use-phase emissions to disposal, and not just at vehicle usage emissions.

A NEW vision in FINE DINING

A TOP-LEVEL CULINARY APPROACH TO THE CONCEPT OF GREEK PHILOXENIA THROUGH A CONVERSATION WITH IKOS RESORTS’ GOLDEN CHEF’S HAT AWARD WINNERS AND MICHELIN-STARRED CHEFS, LEFTERIS LAZAROU AND ETTORE BOTRINI.

134 IKOS RESORTS GASTRONOMY

Ikos Resorts place a sure bet on the gastronomic experience.

Ikos Resorts are famous for the unique Michelin-starred dining experiences lavishly offered to their guests.

136 IKOS RESORTS GASTRONOMY

Although it has often been said that fine dining is in crisis, especially in recent years, the restaurant industry is always on the line to set things straight. Fine dining, you see, has a way of meandering, adapting and, most importantly, keeping up with new developments. The same goes for its Greek version and the path the Greek restaurant scene has taken recently. “In the last few years we have seen a real revolution in Greek gastronomy and its upper levels, whatever they may be considered. We are now in a promising trajectory but is yet to be seen how things will unfold. Whether this revolution will be fully successful or not” says the owner of two Golden Chef’s Hat awards and a Michelin star, Ettore Botrini. He would love to see more chef-patrons in Greece, creators with their own spaces, where they can work based on their

principles, knowledge, techniques, and ideas, and present them to the public, on-site.

“Both the Greek cuisine and fine dining in Greece are on a very good path right now, if you look at the restaurant award institutions by ‘Athinorama’ – the Golden Chef’s Hat Awards and the Greek Cuisine Awards – and of course the Michelin Guide. These foundations are reliable, but we should pay a great deal of attention to the service and the staff as well” agrees Lefteris Lazarou, also a chef awarded with a Golden Chef’s Hat and a Michelin star, who, however, makes an important point about all the people behind the headline who work hard to put meaningful food on every plate, on every table.

Both iconic chefs – in charge of the flavors at Fresco and Ouzo restaurants at Ikos Resorts respectively – recognize the significant role of hotels in the gastronomic rise of the Greek scene. Lefteris Lazarou acknowledges how important this is, putting a high value on both the role of the key person operation-wise, the F&B Manager, and the communication part: “Both are equally important, as is the support we get every time from the people who know the business of tourism better than anyone else, the hotel owners.”

“We are lucky to have important hotels in the country that fully support the blossoming of Greek fine dining, just like Ikos Resorts. It is crucial for the chef to enjoy

Michelin-starred chef Ettore Botrini. Mouth-watering Italian cuisine at Fresco Restaurant.

not only the financial but the overall support of such entrepreneurs, so that he can provide only the best to the visitor who often comes from afar to taste the signature work of each chef, kitchen, or restaurant” is Ettore Botrini’s view.

The new breath in haute cuisine can come from two factors that are likely to complement the work being done in Athens, Thessaloniki, and the islands of the country. According to Lefteris Lazarou, “The first one is the important gastronomic festivals, which bring together many talented cooks from Greece and abroad. The second one is related to a number of excellent restaurants that are scattered around the Greek countryside which I would like to see multiply”. Ettore Botrini applauds, and even focuses on the equally remarkable work of the small producers and suppliers behind the catering of the country’s top culinary institutions, as well as the additional emphasis on seasonality and sustainability.

As for this year’s culinary projects in the restaurants of Ikos Resorts? In the elegant surroundings and the effortless dolce vita atmosphere of Fresco Restaurant, Ettore Botrini will present a refined Italian cuisine, encapsulating all the warmth and intimacy of the gastronomic culinary philosophy of the Mediterranean country, along with his own distinctive touches of course, plus the precious synergy of local, quality raw materials. At the same time, Lefteris Lazarou will introduce more than 10 new dishes to the public, all of them true to his seafood philosophy that is bursting with Greekness. “I am really looking forward with great anticipation for people to try them, I couldn’t be more happy and proud about them” he says with enthusiasm.

The impressive Ikos Resorts dishes always manage to exceed guest’s expectations.

Meet Thanos Kappas, a visionary chef

The Corporate Executive Chef of Ikos Resorts talks about his role, gastronomy and its future, as well as his vision for the brand.

“It is a huge honor for any professional chef to have such a position in a brand like Ikos Resorts. What we have achieved so far compels us to continue to maintain the highest level. This is an enormous challenge, at the same time. The particularity of Ikos Resorts is that they share many common features in operation, so that the overall guest experience is the same everywhere. This is not an easy thing to achieve, as each hotel is in a different location and the culture of the staff may differ. There are many more factors that make this a huge challenge. On the up side of my part, through the many trips to the group’s hotels, I am able to identify the best ideas and tactics that a chef might be implementing and transmit them to the others. That is the most rewarding for me, as through this process we improve our overall product for the benefit of our guests.”

How much do you think gastronomy in Greek hotels has improved in recent years?

Gastronomy has become a big part of everyone’s lives in recent years, as both traditional and new media have contributed to this. This has given a boost to the chef’s profession and the industry in general, as guests are no longer happy with a tasty meal but seek a unique experience every time they visit a restaurant. It is no exaggeration to say that gastronomy has thus taken a special place in our daily lives. This could not leave the hotel sector unaffected. There, food is now served with a new philosophy, far from the style of the past, which was rather more mass-market. Buffets are diminishing and the restaurant-style plate is gaining ground. Hotel chefs are able to create memories for guests through the unique culinary experiences they offer.

How do you see this developing further in the coming years?

In my opinion, the next step we need to take is to evolve our

menus and make them more eco-friendly and healthier for our guests. We need to focus even more on the experience and not on other factors such as, for example, quantity. This is something also pointed out to us by quite a large percentage of customers. In addition, uniqueness is something that guests appreciate when the whole process is done right. The local products of each region should be used as much as possible and special menus or restaurants based on the farm-to-table philosophy should be available in every hotel.

How important is it for a deluxe hotel to be accompanied by a premium level of gastronomy?

It is something extremely important. The guest in a luxury hotel has made sure that there is a budget to be invested in those days of the year when he will be with his family, to relax and make memories. It is unthinkable for a great hotel to not strive to provide a top level of gastronomy.

Where do you think the restaurants of Ikos are at the moment in terms of gastronomy and what do they offer to the visitor?

Ikos Resorts are Family Luxury All Inclusive Resorts. Given this framework, they provide high quality restaurant food and service, so that our guests enjoy the overall fine dining experience. In addition to our standard menus, there are vegan and children’s menus available, different in each restaurant.

What is your plan for further highlighting the culinary part of Ikos Resorts in the future?

Thanos Kappas, Corporate Executive Chef of Ikos Resorts, works every day to provide a top level of gastronomy.

My goal is to create – in collaboration with the company’s executive chefs – a new line of Ikos Signature Dishes, in keeping with the standards of other major international brands.

5-STAR drinking

THE BARS OF IKOS RESORTS MAINTAIN AN EXTREMELY HIGH LEVEL OF QUALITY AND HOSPITALITY, REFLECTING THE BELIEF THAT FINE DRINKING IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE OVERALL HOLIDAY EXPERIENCE.

142 IKOS RESORTS COCKTAILS

Expertly-mixed signature cocktails and lashings of Andalusian flair, served to pair perfectly with a unique, luxury summer holiday.

Mojitos for summer, cosmopolitans for spring. Sip a signature cocktail at the Pool Bar, or soak up the sun from the elegant Beach Club Bar accompanied by a melody of soothing ocean sounds.

The list of experiences offered by Ikos Resorts appears to be endless. As part of the overall philosophy regarding the gastronomic and culinary approach, they make sure to keep the bar, drinks, and cocktails section at the highest level. Besides, whether you belong to the category of spirits aficionados or not, you would agree that in summer, the most carefree time of the year, it is probably easier to find your way to the bar. After all, everyone needs to fully relax and enjoy a glass of “something with a character” – with philosophy and taste.

On the bars of Ikos Resorts you will enjoy 5-star cocktails, in which the most up-to-date and sophisticated techniques work together with the most premium spirits. The drinks lists include plenty of signature choices, each one tailored to the needs of the guest and the local conditions, as well as the all time classics. Some of them can also stand deservedly on restaurant tables, alongside award-winning dishes,

opening up new horizons of flavor maturity, in pairings you probably never imagined.

Obviously, all those features required by today’s drinking could not be missing; there is a wide variety of choices in spritzes, low abv as well as non-alcoholic cocktails/mocktails. Apart from all of the above, you will also enjoy one of the most important qualities of the contemporary bar industry: the drinks here have a tremendous consistency – the key factor to success of a bar.

At the same time, in all Ikos resorts and bars, great emphasis is placed on the use of local products in cocktails, thus supporting the small producers of each region and strengthening the sense of community that is so important for the bar world. For example, at Ikos Aria on Kos, a variant of the classic Margarita called the Garden Margarita contains local thyme honey – there are more than 60 families on the island involved in this particular branch of production.

At Ikos Aria again, local “kanelada” (cinnamon drink) has been added to the menu, as a non-alcoholic option, usually served as a digestif. Of course, in this case too there may be some twists, such as adding some of the local tsipouro to it. In the Ionian Sea and Ikos Dassia, on the other hand, the Corfiot kumquat, the island’s trademark, could not but be prominent in similar cocktails.

Just as with the gastronomy part, the bar plays a significant role in the overall experience of the visitor, as an integral part of the full context of true life pleasures that everyone needs on holiday. With everything you have read in mind, I guess it becomes even clearer that one of the most enjoyable summer memories is watching magical sunsets, accompanied by a delicious, well-made cocktail in hand.

Deluxe Collection guests will even enjoy cocktails by the pool.
