Polygum and IKO Enertherm in one high-performance roofing system on the Z-Towers in Riga (Latvia) Z-Towers is one of the most prestigious construction projects in Riga, the capital of Latvia. The project is a multifunctional concept.

It consists of two towers, 123 m and 117 m in height respectively.

The Z-Towers contain 336 apartments with views over the old city, 10,000 m2 office space (A-class), parking for 700 cars and over 4,000 m2 of room for a fitness centre and spa.

The total roof area is some 4,000 m2, sealed with a roofing system composed completely of IKO / ATAB products. For the builder, this means, one manufacturer, one contact for all of their needs.

The concrete structure is first treated with IKO Pro Bitumen Quick primer. Flame-sealed on top of that is The polyester reinforced vapour barrier Turbo Rock 3 Tmec is then torched onto the roof, createing a perfect

full bond. Then 120 mm IKO enertherm Alu PIR insulation is partially glued on top of the vapour barrier using IKO Pro PU adhesive. The unique underlay Quadra Rock KSK, with vapour diffusion studded profile, is glued onto the aluminium facing of the insulation by first removing the release film and then pressing the roll. The Polygum Prevent top layer is fully flame-sealed so that the underlay acquires even better adhesion

through heat transmission. The solid bond is very important, given the height of the towers. Special thanks go to Maxim Zaprivoda, director of roofing company Arteko, the roofer for this project. Arteko specialises in performing complex roofing works like the Z-towers project.

The fascinating topics in this second edition of IKO Vision portray the world of ATAB, known for more than 100 years as Antwerp’s manufacturer of roofing and waterproofing products. Since 2000, ATAB has been part of the IKO Group, a Canadian based and family owned manufacturing company.

The IKO group develops, produces and distributes roof sealing, waterproofing and insulation, and operates worldwide.

We believe in the power of innovation.

Product and system innovation are the best guarantee for the sustainable development of both our own company and for our business partners. As I mentioned in my speech on the occasion of the opening of our insulation plant in France, we always aim to push the limits. It forms an integral part of our corporate culture. We always want to improve, always strive to be the best; never give up, as cycling legend Raymond Poulidor has demonstrated.

In this second edition, we would like to tell you about the expansion of IKO Insulations, which has now opened its second production unit in Europe. This makes IKO enertherm one of the leading players in the PIR insulation market. We are a turnkey supplier of roofing systems.

A good example of this is the mega project Z-Towers in Riga where we not only showed our strength as manufacturer of the total roofing system, but also that our export efforts have paid off.

How does a producer of bitumen roofing membranes in Antwerp win a place on the Blue Gate ecological business park? “Through continuous investment and innovation”, says Wim Verstraeten, production director at ATAB. “Contrary to what many believe, bitumen is a sustainable, easily recyclable productif, like ATAB, you approach it innovatively.”

The area by the River Scheldt south of Antwerp used to be known as ‘Petroleum Zuid’ (‘de Petrol’ in the vernacular). After the sixties, the petrochemical companies moved away and what remained was heavily polluted land. In collaboration with the Flemish Region, the City of Antwerp is now transforming the zone into the Blue Gate project.

The mission is to attract businesses scoring high in innovation, renewable energy and the reuse of raw materials. Is a producer of bitumen roofing membranes such as ATAB really at home in such surroundings?

“Without a shadow of a doubt”, says Wim Verstraeten. “Extending our production licence to 2070 is proof that Blue Gate

recognises us as an innovative and sustainable producer. There has been much investment since we became part of the international IKO Group in 2000.”

The same scenario took place in the ‘liquids’ division. A brand-new plant produces liquid waterproofing products for the European continent. Product development continues to see substantial investment in pursuit of better, more ecologically responsible products. The result has been solvent-free liquids.

ATAB recycles Recycled materials are also of increasing importance in roofing membrane production.

They come largely from the production and treatment process of the bitumen roofing membranes.

To achieve those goals, ATAB invested in a new recycling system. Following two years of in-depth research and testing, ATAB opted for a special machine, which reduces roofing strip residues under high pressure into ‘crumbs’ of approximately 1 cm.

Those crumbs are then combined into manageable quantities, added to the coating mixture in the mixing process and homogenised. Cutting waste from larger customers and construction sites is also brought in, checked for impurities and processed in the new recycling machine.

ATAB invests A new production line was commissioned in the roofing membrane plant and the existing line was completely modernised.

The result is a facility that produces broad range of high-tech roofing membranes, using state-of-the-art methods.

In addition, the mixing shop was thoroughly modernised, so that a wide range of raw materials is available. The bitumen is brought in by ship and unloaded at the company’s own terminal on the quay.

ATAB innovates From passive to active sustainability: the air-purifying Carrara roofing membrane With the recycling of bituminous raw materials and the production of solvent-free liquids, ATAB is making great advances in sustainability. With the new white Polygum Carrara roofing membrane, the company is pushing the limits in ecologically friendly roofing.

Thanks to its heat-reflecting and air-purifying properties, Carrara ACTIVELY contributes to a better environment. The mineral finish of this innovative roofing membrane is coated with a special type of titanium-dioxide, which under the effect of UV light acts as a catalyser (comparable to that of a petrol engine car) and converts harmful nitrogen and sulphur oxides (NoX and SoX) into harmless, environmentally neutral matter.

Moreover, the white colour of the mineral top layer allows the Carrara roofing membrane to reflect the heat, which in turn has positive effects on the energy consumption for the air-conditioning in the building.

With these striking results, ATAB proves that bitumen is far from an outmoded product, and can be a highly sustainable form of roofing, with clear added value in terms of its ecological benefits.

The new lambda value applies for the complete series of IKO enertherm insulation boards with ALU facing (ALU, ALU NF, ALU NF PRO, KR ALU), used for various insulation applications. This jump in quality results from in-depth research work conducted in the R&D centre at the IKO Insulations production plants in Klundert, the Netherlands and Combronde, France. Improvements were made in the formulation of the raw materials for the PIR boards as well as the production specifications. The higher diffusion resistance and the refined cell structure (Micro-Cell Technology) also contribute to the improved lambda value.

An additional effect of this development is the improved dimensional stability (no shrinkage) and compression strength of the IKO enertherm insulation boards. Thanks to IKO enertherm, architects, specifiers and building companies can now attain their required insulation standards with less and thinner IKO enertherm products compared to other insulation materials. “By attaining the new lambda value, we prove that our slogan “Performing is pushing the limits” is no empty promise.

IKO Enertherm, the highest performance insulation Thanks to their specific composition, IKO enertherm products are miles ahead of other hard foam boards in several respects. Exceptionally passive house project in Amay IKO enertherm was used for optimum insulation of the various flat roofs and walls of this home.

As the photo shows, a 3-layer glued system was used here with IKO enertherm ALU 100 mm PIR boards. For insulating the walls, a 3-layer insulation structure was likewise provided, but with IKO enertherm ALU TG (Wrap). Ultimately, a Rock panel outer wall cladding will be applied.

IKO confirms its development strategy Official opening of a production unit for PIR insulation in Combronde On 28 May, the international group IKO, a global leader in the insulation and waterproofing industry, opened its first French PIR insulation production operation. The plant is IKO’s second such facility in Europe. This site, devoted to the production and sale of thermal PIR insulation products under the brand name IKO enertherm among others, was commissioned in early 2014 and has since been supplying France and South European markets.

Prominent guests Present for the grand opening were Hartley Koschitzky (CEO IKO Europe), Dirk Theuns (MD IKO Insulations) and numerous other guests: Mr Fuzeau, Prefect, Mr Giuliani, Subprefect, and Mr Gouttebel, Chairman of the President of the Department Council, as well as the mayors of the Communauté de communes des Côtes de Combrailles (Auvergne) and the Chairman of the Parc de l’Aize. Many IKO European customers and partners also visited the factory to attend the ceremony. The crowd also included one other notable guest cycling legend, Raymond Poulidor.

Cutting-edge technology IKO Insulations designs and produces innovative insulation products based on PIR, marketed under the brand name IKO enertherm.

This new production site “aims to produce insulation solutions for roof, rafter and floor applications, as well as for post-insulating outer walls (ITE)”, states Vincent Bourgon, plant director..

As with IKO’s other production locations, the Combronde site will also use hypermodern production processes with a view to sustainability and the environment.

Thanks to its outstanding lambda value, IKO enertherm’s PIR insulation is an especially thin panel with a powerful insulating effect. It has theadded advantage of low weight and compactness, helping to reduce transport and freight handling costs and CO2 emissions.

IKO has invested 35 million euro in this brand-new production operation located in Parc de l’Aize (63). The site has a production capacity of 600,000 m³ comprised of three main components: a production facility of 7,000 m², a storage facility of 18,000 m² and an office building (housing customer service, logistics, purchasing, and the technical department). When running at full capacity the unit will employ 60 people.

Central siting and strategic positioning Before this new plant was commissioned, the products distributed in France and South Europe were made in Klundert, the Netherlands. With this second European production site, IKO’s development strategy in France is coming into focus. The new plant will now supply customers in France and South Europe. By combining the high production and storage capacity with a central location in France, in the heart of a great network of motorways (A71 Paris-Clermont, A89 LyonsBordeaux and A75 Clermont-Montpellier), IKO is well positioned to provide high value, localized service to its France based customers.

As part of the IKO Group, IKO Insulations produces innovative insulation products based on PIR* (polyisocyanurate) under the brand name IKO enertherm, at four locations globally. In Europe, production takes place in two state of the art plants; one in the Netherlands (Klundert), the other in France (Clermont-Ferrand). Through the combination of intelligent production processes, well trained employees and a great respect for sustainability, the two production operations serve as leaders in the industry.

IKO Canada 1 PIR production unit in Brampton, Ontario (Canada): IKO Insulations first plant was commissioned in 1999, in Brampton, just west of Toronto.

This site is a true pioneer in producing insulation material, developed and optimised using PIR technology.

The plant was intended to respond to the challenges in logistics and transport created by a rapidly expanding market for insulation products.

IKO Europe 1 PIR production unit in Klundert, Moerdijk (the Netherlands): The site in Klundert, Netherlands, was commissioned in 2006 for the production of PIR. The plant has a hypermodern production line. Using the most modern technologies and chemical processes, the Klundert plant makes several kinds and formats of IKO enertherm boards, depending on the intended application.

Besides sustainability, it was particularly the roofing strip’s ECO properties that determined the choice: heat reflecting and thus cooling due to the white Carrara mineral, air-purifying due to the titanium-dioxide coating, and fireresistant due to the natural graphite crystals worked into the roofing strip itself.

For the roof of its new plant in Bremen, where 3,000 people work, Airbus, Europe’s biggest aircraft builder and the world’s second biggest, chose the air-purifying and cooling ECO roofing strip Polygum Carrara. Roofing company Elard Hoppe GmbH & Co KG assisted in convincing the developer of the sustainable qualities of this unique roofing strip.

Polygum Certified Contractor Koerts Dakwerken in Groningen, Netherlands, wins a handsome project.

Winkler Prins Comprehensive School commissioned the renovation of one of its establishments. Polygum Carrara replaced the 1,050 m2 existing roof covering. This roofing strip was selected because of the CO2 reduction, the favourable effect on the environment and the heat reflectivity of the top layer.

The principal was indeed pleased with the environmental certificates associated with using Polygum Carrara.

The work took one week in total.

The school has five locations and has since commissioned the renovation of a roof with a surface area of 690 m2.

German roofer ‘Schindowski Dachbau’ chooses IKO Protect for renovations in Rotenburg ®

Several galleries of flats in Rotenburg, Germany, needed renovation work. This involved 50 m2 surface area per gallery. Roofing company Schindowski Dachbau GmbH in Rotenburg used products from the IKO Protect range for this, notably IKO Protect MS Detail and IKO Protect Metatec.

Polygum roofing membranes and IKO Enertherm at Riga building fair What the Batibouw Fair is for Belgium, MAJA is the same for Latvia. The fair takes place every March in the Kipsala International Exhibition Centre in the capital Riga. Our customer Jumtu Segumu Centrs participated in the fair this spring. Based in Sigulda, 50 km from Riga, this company has 20 years’ experience in roof construction and over 700 roofs to its credit over the past decade.

Jumtu Segumu Centrs was acclaimed as ‘Roof King’ in Latvia in 2012. Headed up by owner Sandis Naglis, the Latvian roofing company is steaming ahead. Since last year, Jumtu Segumu Centrs has been using

Polygum membranes for its roofing work.

To that end, representatives from the company visited the ATAB plant in Antwerp, to take advantage of the chance to learn more about ATAB’s products and application requirements. In addition, the company is now also distributor for both Polygum products and the IKO range, including IKO enertherm PIR insulation. Incidentally, participating in the fair alsp presented an opportunity to introduce IKO enertherm to the Latvian market. We wish Sandis Naglis and his Jumtu Segumu Centrs the best of success!

17,000 m2 Nossegem retail complex renovated with IKO Enertherm Alu and Polygum Prevent

MS Detail was used for the wall connections, whereas the contractor considered the Metatec system to be the most appropriate for the surfaces.

The contractor selected IKO Protect Metatec because of the short completion time required (two hours before the galleries had to be open to public use). Fitting and curing is one of the strong points of the IKO Protect Metatec BTG system. This two-component coating is based on methacrylates, which cures by adding a suitable quantity of hardener powder. The second layer is applied wet-in-wet, which guarantees very rapid application. After drying, it forms a waterproof membrane with very high resistance to static and dynamic loading, making it ideal for galleries. Contractor Schindowski Dachbau GmbH was very pleased with the result and intends to use IKO Protect Metatec again in the future for similar applications.

Polygum Certified contractor LID Limburgse Dakwerken This roof application is on a busy retail complex in Nossegem, which houses stores like A.S.Adventure, Krëfel and Trendhopper. The complex has a surface area close to 17,000 m2 and is owned by KBC. LID was commissioned to provide the roof with new waterproofing and insulation, as well as to fit new skylights and fire partitions in the stores. All of the work had to be completed within a very strict deadline, with minimal inconvenience for the stores. Naturally, it also had to be completed for a competitive price.

No flame was allowed to be involved in the execution, because of the developer’s strict requirements in connection with fire safety.

The insulation was mechanically fixed, the waterproofing was cold-bonded and the seams sealed using hot air guns, in order to avoid any potential fire risk. Thanks to its years of expertise and good project planning, LID succeeded in finishing this project on budget and on time, to the great satisfaction of the principals and the stores.
