Luke 18:18 23 “An official asked Him this question, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus answered him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone You know the commandments; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not kill; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; honor your father and your mother ” And he replied, “All of these I have observed from my youth ” When Jesus heard this, He said to him, “There is still one thing left for you: sell all that you have and distribute it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven Then come and follow me ” But when he heard this, he became quite sad, for he was very rich ”
This rich man, by asking Jesus this question, shows us that he was unfulfilled, or that he was searching for something But the gospel says that he was rich, and that he was also called an official, which, at that time could have meant he was either a soldier or a political figure He was both rich and in a position of power, but it appears that he was looking for something which money or power could not give him
Jesus immediately tests to see if this man had been following the commandments It appears that the official followed these commandments since his youth and most of us are probably the same way We aren’t really bad; we don’t kill or steal or tell lies (at least big ones) we are basically good, but we are all work in progress We may have those little and big things to improve on like our temper, patience, generosity, or even our daily struggle to pray
In the next part of the gospel, Jesus goes on to challenge the rich man by saying in effect that we are totally dependent on Him We need to be aware of our attachments to others that prevents us from discovering and following Jesus
II. Man’s Ultimate Desire, Yearnings for the Infinite.
Parable of the Young Man/Woman: Ready, raring to enter the workplace and find his/her place in the world Man Yearns for something Yearnings:
1 Yearn for Knowledge: The more we know the more we realize we do not know and we need to know more
2 Yearn for freedom, self determination, and success: freedom to actualize our needs, freedom from poverty
We look for work/business to be able to determine our own lives
To live not in material want Yearning for freedom, not to be constricted, confined
We long to give love
We long to receive love Love that is perfect, absolute
Our desires, yearnings are but gifts from our creator we are created beings created out of love by a God who created all things in this world for a good purpose also out of love for us Pope Benedict “God is love” We are created by God who loves us and wants to share life with us forever
These gifts come from our maker, God Himself thru Jesus Christ, the image of the Invisible God These desires yearnings He places in our hearts All other things in this world are created by God also out of love and are gifts presented to us so that we can know God more easily through these gifts and learn to love God in return from the book “What Is Ignatian Spirituality” by David L Fleming S J
Our Yearnings, our desires are a desire not really for the gifts but for the infinite, God Himself
This weekend is a weekend to discover our yearnings, desires, be aware of our attachments that prevents us from discovering Jesus and ultimately discover the Infinite God in Jesus Christ Jesus offers us something better
1 What is missing in your life right now?
2 When God looks at you, what does He see and what does He want you to do?
3 What is that one thing you know you must do to fully reconcile with God and to come into a closer relationship with Him, but you find is difficult to do?
Galatians 6:4 “Each one should test their own actions Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else ”
If you’re in a hurry, you may not worry about leaving the house wearing a stained shirt or mismatched socks, without brushing your hair or putting on makeup But what if other people could see beyond your physical appearance and look at your insecurities, pride, shame, or malicious thoughts?
Those are the kinds of things our society urges you to cover up After a while, you create masks to hide your true thoughts and feelings and present an image you hope will prove your worth The longer you wear your masks, the more comfortable they feel But you can’t enjoy healthy relationships unless you remove the masks and show others who you really are
a Who ‘Who’ would be the inherent things in our lives ‘
b Am ‘Am’ is about the choices we make
c I ‘I’ is who we really are It is who God made you your talents, your intelligence, your strengths and your weaknesses It remains untouched by experience, choice or time
Instead of finding out who we really are, we cover up our true selves with walls, projections, false identities, pretentions We wear our MASKS
a Out of fear We are afraid of knowing our true self, of admitting our vulnerabilities and revealing them to others
b Out of guilt We want to cover up past mistakes
c As protection As a shell to keep us from being judged, scorned and possibly rejected by other people or worse, by ourselves d Out of poor self judgement We wear them to salvage what is left of an already low self esteem
a Emotional An example of an emotional mask may be someone’s tendency to constantly carry a certain mood
b Physical A physical mask is more tangible Material possessions used to show off your masked identity c Spiritual May Spiritual masks are where we may insistently question God’s existence, His nature and His power because we cannot deal with and accept what is happening in our lives d Minor Masks the kind that we know when, where, how and who to wear for e Defining Masks Defining masks have become part of who we are and are probably the most difficult to accept and let go of
Because in the process of asking ‘who am I?’ We will definitely encounter the question: “Am I at peace with who I am?”
In John 14 27 it says, ‘Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you I do not give to you as the world gives Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid ’ It says in Gen 1:27, ‘God created human beings, making them to be like Himself He created them male and female ’
a What are the masks I wear?
b How will I conquer these masks and be my true self?
When God created humans, he designed us to live in families Family relationships are important to God Even the church, the universal body of believers, is called the family of God When we receive God's Spirit at salvation, we are adopted into His family
Ecclesiastes 3:12 “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted ”
“Who am I?” can be connected to the relationships we have Family is the most important, if not, the most immediate relationship we have ever since we were brought into this world
A family is more than just a group of people living together, united by blood A family is a reflection of God When a man and a woman vow to care for each other til death and vow to care for the children they will be blessed with, they are repeating the vow God made to His people when He promised them unswerving fidelity and love
Deut 7:6 “You are a people set apart as holy to GOD, your God GOD, your God, chose you out of all the people on Earth for himself as a cherished, personal treasure GOD wasn't attracted to you and didn't choose you because you were big and important the fact is, there was almost nothing to you He did it out of sheer love, keeping the promise he made to your ancestors GOD stepped in and mightily bought you back out of that world of slavery, freed you from the iron grip of Pharaoh King of Egypt Know this: GOD, your God, is God indeed, a God you can depend upon He keeps his covenant of loyal love”
Isaiah 46:4 “Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you ”
Eph 3:14 “For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named”
Pope John Paul II wrote: "Man cannot live without love He remains a being that is incomprehensible for himself, his life is senseless, if love is not revealed to him, if he does not encounter love, if he does not experience it and make it his own, if he does not participate intimately in it "
Not all families have a “picture perfect” reality Some wounds are sudden, caused by big dramatic events The death of a loved one that a family never recovers from; or when a family lives in an environment of physical, emotional or verbal abuse; or when families are strained by a parent’s abandonment or a child’s running away Some wounds develop over time, without you knowing it Silently and slowly, it robs a family of love Soon, you find yourself suffering long awkward silences in the car or the dining table, unsure of what to talk about
You find yourself deliberately missing family activities because you think your time is better spent with other people, who understand you, who get who you are After a while, you simply lose the desire to share your life and time with them
Pain has a reputation for being a negative emotion It’s a sign of weakness But pain has a purpose Pain tells us that something is wrong Emotional pain tells you that something deeply important to you has been hurt It is only when you acknowledge the hurt, when you know what it is, that you can take the steps to heal it Ignoring pain does not make it go away Ignoring pain does not make you stronger b Choose to forgive
Love within a family does not grow because it is sinless, or without mistakes It does so, because it chooses to respond to sin with forgiveness, not resentment Forgiveness is not an emotion or a feeling It’s a choice It involves so much more than not holding grudge against someone or not plotting some revenge It is not the same as “forgetting” the offense It means setting the offenders free, releasing them from all obligation, re establishing broken relationship To choose to forgive is to choose to let go of that which hurts you
Eph 4:32 “Be kind to one another, compassionate, and mutually forgiving just as God has forgiven you in Christ ”
c Choose to start Exodus 20:12 “Honor your father and your mother that you may have a long life in the land that Yahweh has given you ”
Honor your father and mother I suppose that’s easy enough to do When they’re good parents, it’s easy to be thankful for the sacrifices they have made So, we easily reciprocate, responding to their efforts with gestures of love and gratitude We can communicate and express to them our love, whether verbally or by action But what if your parents aren’t good parents? What if they’ve hurt you, abandoned you or didn’t love you? Are we still to honor our father and mother?
The answer is ‘yes’
Honoring our parents’ means giving them the respect they deserve It does not mean blindly obeying them IF doing so will lead us to sin It does not mean condoning violence at home, or heavy drinking, or abandoning their responsibilities as parents
God has the capacity to as the perfect Father to pour into you those things that have been missing in your family life God did not intend for you to get hurt He did not cause you pain Acknowledge and allow God to love you and be part of your family so you can love others Only His love is perfect
Talking about family love means nothing if it remains only as that: talk It is time to live out that love Whether you have been blessed with a family full of love, or whether your family is struggling with experiencing love, now is the time to commit strengthening or renewing your family relationships Now is the time to start with us
In the next 10 minutes we will be asking you to write a love letter to your parents Use this chance to express to them your love, your affirmation and gratitude for all they’ve done and your decision to forgive them for their faults Use this chance to admit your faults and your failures and ask for their forgiveness and let healing of your relationship begin
1 Share a memorable experience that you had with your family
2 What can I do to enhance/bring back love in the family that God has given me?
1 John 4:7 21 “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another ” Encounter with Others will focus on the other people around us and their importance in our lives
Genesis 2:18 “It is not good for man to live alone I will make him a suitable companion ” So, God created, Eve
From the moment we’re born we have this one basic need, something that we will always crave for even if we’re old and gray Love is that basic need Love is OUR basic need
Since we are all human beings created in the image and likeness of God then WE are all like Adam We all have the same basic need for love, the kind of love that cannot be given by anything else, except by another human being
We must love one another God shares with us a more comprehensive meaning of love I’m sure you all are familiar with this passage from 1 Corinthians 13:4 7 “LOVE is patient, LOVE is kind It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud It does not dishonor others, it is not self seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs LOVE does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres ”
If we rely on our own human strength then it is quite impossible But this is perfect love and Jesus has shown us that IT IS possible to love truly and perfectly And if Jesus is in us then we are also capable of true love We are capable of perfect love not by our own capacity but with the love of Jesus in us
John 13:34 “And now I give you a new commandment: love one another As I have loved you, so you MUST love one another ”
Love your family and friends Love the poor and outcasts of society Love your enemies
Matthew 5:44 47 “Love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven If you love only those who love you, what good is that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that ”
1 John 3:18 “Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions ”
The 5 Love Languages:
Words of Affirmation: Simply true statements affirming the worth of another person People who express this are the ones who love to compliment people and are people who love to receive compliments Gifts: A gift is a tangible object that says, I was thinking about you I wanted you to have this I love you Gifts need not be complicated nor expensive It shouldn’t be done in payment for services rendered nor should you expect something in return
Acts of Service: In Galatians 5:13 “ serve one another through love ” Serve one another in love It is service freely given, not out of fear or guilt, but out of choice Like gifts, acts of service need not be grand It could be simple things
Quality Time: Time is one of the most precious things we can give because we only have a set amount of it When we give someone our time, we are giving them a portion of our lives that we’ll never get back Our time is our life So when we give a person our time, we’re basically saying, I’m giving a part of me to you Physical Touch: Emotional warmth is one of the most fundamental ways of communicating love
Encounter with others is all about giving and receiving love This is what Jesus showed us throughout His life and what Jesus calls us to do as well Let us all try to live up to His example and be clear manifestations of the love Jesus seeks to bring to this world
Starter
What is your top 2 love language? How can you show love to the people around you?
Matthew 18:21 22 “The Peter came up and asked him, “Lord, how many times may my brother sin against me and I have to forgive him? Seven times?” Jesus told him, “I tell you, not just seven times, but 77 times ”
Sin is a life apart from God This is the effect of sin in our lives be it attachment to anger and hatred; to material things power influence earthly relationships These are the blocks to a relationship with God; to following God and to receiving the best that God has in store for us
Sin is also lack of Gratitude to God who continues to love us and give us gifts to show His love and lead us to come back even if we sin; the sun continues to shine on us, we continue to receive His love even if we sin
1
A lot of people do not know the true God People do not know how to relate to God Fear of God because of wrong notion in the Old Testament that God was stern, unapproachable, distant, feared Heb 12:18 19, 22 24
Fear resulted also because of an incomplete definition of sin, a definition that most people remember: wrongdoing against God’s law deserving punishment A God only in the head not in the heart No personal relationship with God A God distant we call He not You or “Ikaw” connoting a God who is near
2 Jesus revelation of God: Lk 11:1 2
Disciples “Teach us to pray to communicate with God”
Jesus “When you pray, communicate with God say FATHER ” God is our true Father One whom we can approach, talk to, find strength, comfort, security
2
Not to live a life apart from Him Parable of the Prodigal Son Lk 15:11 32
As the Father embraced the son, he started to say his memorized confession but even before he could finish the Father said to his servants:
Quickly bring the finest robe and put it on him meaning restoration of wealth and stature The finest robe was actually the robe of the Father Put a ring in his finger meaning restoration of authority and status of as son Put sandals on his feet meaning restoration of the son’s status as a free man not a slave Slaughter the fatted calf, the special calf reserved for a communal celebration, a party for this son who was dead and has come to life; was lost and has been found Life apart from the Father means we are lost; it also means death
3 God is waiting for us full of love He will run to meet us already forgiving us We need to come back to the Father and live a life with God and live in plenty
God’s Indomitable merciful love, Indomitable meaning it cannot be defeated, a love that cannot be defeated, a love that is patient, everlasting, waiting, prompting, inviting us to go back
God always initiates the encounter with us God is an active God He is ever at work in people’s lives creating, inviting, directing, guiding, proposing, suggesting Jesus in the Gospels enters people’s lives and invites them to follow Him (What is Ignatian Spirituality by David Fleming S J ) Love High Singles Encounter Retreat, a beautiful time to Encounter God in prayer without any distractions Def of Prayer: the opening of the heart and mind to God thru a personal encounter with God in love (Opening to God by Thomas Greene S J ) A communication process God is Lord of the Encounter which He initiates Never boring there is spontaneity

A God who creates Created Beings We are created beings created out of love by a God who created all things in this world for a good purpose also out of love for us Pope Benedict “God is love” We are created by God who loves us and wants to share life with us forever We are created unique by God There is only one person like us in the universe We must look at ourselves to learn to grow in value and appreciation of our own uniqueness Encounter with Self helps us in his area
Through His gifts All other things in this world are created by God also out of love and are gifts presented to us so that we can know God more easily through these gifts and learn to love God in return Family and others are gifts from God God encounters us through His gifts in the events in our life like: The people we meet, the work we do, the things we see and hear etc
2 A God who loves us with a love that cannot be defeated, indomitable, a love that comes first, unconditional, the love of our true Father in Heaven God’s love is generous, inexhaustible like the rays of the sun, like water from a spring Even in our darkest moments, God is there beside us
3 A God who has good plans for us and talk 1 on Good master gives us a glimpse of this This plan includes us now, from our birth, parents, childhood, education, livelihood, state of life, salvation He puts us in positions to manage the world as Priests, Parents, Professionals, Doctors, members of CYP
1 Spend time with God in Prayer, set specific time and place to encounter God Builds up sensitivity to God that when He encounters us in the business of life, we will know it is God
2 Open our hearts and minds Talk with God but more importantly listen God is interested in our own words in what we have to say Be sensitive to God He only comes in peace, the mark on God’s presence
3 Respond to God He calls, we respond Active attentiveness and active responsiveness We are not to be inhibited by our own weakness, sinfulness nor failure Our response grows and matures and deepens over time, it is a process
4 Our response to God in this retreat: Get to know God, His love and plan for us and enter into a relationship with God
Times when you were closest and farthest from God

Sometimes people get stuck when they try to get over their anger or to forgive They can’t seem to erase the terrible memory A key way to deal with this is called healing of memories
Denial: The person refuses to admit he was hurt
Anger: The person blames others for hurting him
Bargaining: The person puts conditions on his willingness to forgive In other words, he decides what it would take for him to forgive Although these conditions are usually unlikely to be met, the offended person at least allows that forgiveness might be possible
Depression: The person is down on himself for allowing this hurt to paralyze him
Acceptance: The person seeks to grow from this hurt
What are the memories I would like to be healed? How can I move forward with God?
