01 THE POLAR EXPRESS Urban Park

Kirovsk City, Russia

Status: Completed Team: Irina Khokhlova, Svetlana Igushkina, Danil Voronin

Our objective was to enhance an existing park that already had an established network of roads. The concept was developed based on the park's proximity to the ski resort, its focus on sports, and the town's history.

The park is located in the northern region, features a robust snowscape, persisting for more than six months each year, providing a unique, natural aesthetic to this architectural concept.

As the lead designer, I produced the concept of the park development, created images and drawings for the client, linked our concept to the actual terrain, developed construction drawings, and selected equipment and materials for the park’s landscaping.

The Polar Express

concept Reflecting on the town’s rich heritage in apatite and ore mining, our design approach for the park was to thoughtfully integrate elements of this historical theme.

As such, we proposed the installation of `a mini railway, which would enable visitors to explore the entire park area, offering unique perspectives.

2,1 km is the length of the route. The carriages run at a constant speed.

Therefore, the visitor can get off at any part of the park and get on the next one.

02 BACK TO THE FUTURE Reconstruction

Tasked with revitalizing his historically significant space, our architectural firm carefully contemplated its rich heritage. After careful consideration, we determined that the buildings should serve multiple functions while still preserving elements of their original purpose. Moreover, our team was committed to preserve the external appearance of the entire complex.

As a part of a team, I created the concept and strategy for the development of Tauride Greenhouses. Working close with engineers and landscape designers, I developed detailed BIM 3D models of greenhouse buildings and created highly-detailed renovation drawings for each of them.

In order to maintain uniform building height, a decision was made to deviate from the original historic cornice, resulting in a different design being utilized.

The window casings have been precisely restored through referencing old photographs and drawings to ensure accuracy and adherence to the building’s original design.

The restoration process has rigorously adhered to reinstating the original rustication, columns, and color of the buildings with accuracy.

The preservation of the historic brick walls of the buildings has been carefully attended to, and where necessary, brickwork reconstruction has been carried out. While all window openings have been replaced, novel timber frames have been utilized while still retaining the authentic glazing characteristic of the historical period.

03 SEASHORE SEALS Urban Park

Kandalksha City, Russia

Status: Completed Team: Irina Khokhlova, Danil Voronin

Urban park on the seashore covers an area of 10 hectares, bordered by the Kandalaksha Bay facing the White Sea. Our team conducted a comprehensive analysis of the project area, identifying key points of attraction which informed the planning framework. Preserving the natural character of the site was a central objective, and the primary pedestrian routes were designed to incorporate existing greenery while utilizing mostly natural materials.

Drawing on existing trails, I linked the concept to the actual terrain, developed construction drawings, designed small architectural forms, and selected equipment and materials for the landscaping of the park.

The architectural concept is based on the image of the Kandalaksha railway station (1915-1916) as an example of northern wooden architecture.

The architectural appearance of the station resembles a half-timbered house. This type of construction means that the supporting elements of the structure are visible on the facade of the building.

When designing the unique small architectural forms, we were inspired by the façade of Kandalaksha railway station and also used the principle of visibility of the load-bearing elements, thereby emphasising the beauty of the form of the structures.

visualization This area is interesting not only for its natural green area, but also for the peculiarity of the local fauna.

The flow of fresh water from the drainage canal, when it enters into the salty water of the bay immobilises marine zooplankton, which attracts seals living in the White Sea, which are visited by both residents and guests of the city.

04 WIZARDY WATER Vineyard Patio

Krasnodar City, Russia

Perched on a hill overlooking the Black Sea, our vineyard project embraces the natural landscape. To minimize its impact, we designed most technical components to be underground, leaving only the ground vat cellar and central pavilion above.

This subterranean level, embedded in the hillside, ensures a gentle slope that separates visitor and worker flow, crucial for gravity-based winemaking.

To harmonize with the surroundings, we sought soft shapes reminiscent of the rolling hills.

As a part of a team I was working on the concept of a vineyard patio. I designed the landscaping system and selected plants for the patio together with the landscape designers, created detailed drawings and visualisations.

The vineyards wings follow the curve of the barrels which shape the underground plan. The central pavilion is not linked to the two wings. This brings a particular architectural lightness. Between the two wings, a landscaping patio has been imagined to create a surprising and refreshing space.

The patio is a unique landscape composition inherited from a dramatic composition: two water mirrors highlight and reinforce the architectural composition. My role was to develop detailed design drawings and vizualizations for the patio inside the vineyard.

LEVEL 1. FLOWERING TREES Presented by trees that bloom in white and change colour throughout the year. The trees range in height from 2 to 3 metres.

LEVEL 2. SMALL TREES AND SHRUB Presented by shrubs up to 1.1-1.5 metres tall. They bloom in white and change colour throughout the year. The shrubs are blotches in the background of the trees and the main substrate.

LEVEL 3. FLOWERING DOMINANT PLANTS Flowering plants from 0.6 to 1m high.

VOLUMINOUS GREENERY Voluminous, bright greenery that creates volume and density in the lower level.

05 CHERRY AVENUE City Block

St Petersburg City, Russia

Status: Diploma project Supervised by: Prof. A. Mikhalichev

The primary objective was to develop a master plan for a district covering an expanse of 50 hectares situated in the southeast region of St. Petersburg.

In conducting a location analysis, it was observed that the given area lies on the outskirts of St. Petersburg, flanked by towering residential complexes. The citizens must traverse significant distances through the city to reach their intended destination.

Conceptually, I employed the “15-minute city” model to balance the functional content of the district. The project’s design includes a diverse range of functions within the boundaries of one residential area, which limits the daily migration of city dwellers. The central pedestrian way, Cherry Avenue, permeates the neighborhood and acts as the main center of attraction for residents.
