Dear Parents

As a faith community we celebrated Family Mass last Saturday at Infant Jesus Church. It was wonderful to have families gather with members of the parish for this celebraIon. The Mass, celebrated by Fr Greg, was a wonderful opportunity for families, extended family and parishioners to pray together, listen and share the Good News.

As a school we conInue to work very closely with the parish throughout the year with all aspects of the Sacramental Program and other liturgical celebraIons.

This special mass also included organising the Infant Jesus School Choir to lead the singing. We look forward to families conInuing to join us for these special celebraIons to enrich our community and support each other in our faith journey.

Sacrament of Penance

CongratulaIons to all the Year Three children who received the Sacrament of ReconciliaIon for the first Ime today or on Monday, or will receive the sacrament later on this evening. The children and their families parIcipated in a very prayerful and memorable retreat and celebraIon.

Many thanks to the Year Three teachers, Miss Deanna FoI and Mrs Leesa RadenI, as well as Miss Melissa Myles, Mr Frank Colangelo and Mr Haydon for assisIng with this program.

We are also very grateful and appreciaIve of Fr Greg and the Parish Sacramental Team coordinated by Theresa Choo and assisted by Mrs Sue Goodwin and Fr John. Throughout the year the Parish Sacramental Team have been very pastoral, supporIve and adaptable with the many changes during 2022.

Ini:a:ves at Infant Jesus School

CongratulaIons to the students who were selected to represent Infant Jesus School at the 2022 Technology Interschool Challenge which was organised by Miss Myles and Digital Technology Teachers from three other Catholic Primary Schools.

The selected students parIcipated as a team of four in either the Senior Challenge or the Junior Challenge. The aim of the Challenge was to allow children to use their coding skills to solve various problems and challenges based on the book ‘We Are Australians.’

All the students excitedly shared their gids and talents, worked cooperaIvely and were able to very efficiently and effecIvely solve all the challenges whilst also assisIng with direcIons for all the visitors. At the conclusion of the challenge the children were very excited to share their achievements.

Fac:on Swimming Carnival

A fantasIc day was had by everyone today at the postponed school swimming carnival. Today, at the swimming carnival the Years 4-6 students were given an opportunity to share their swimming talents and compete against each other in a range of events. Students par 100m, 50m and 25m swimming races, novelty events and the relay event.

CongratulaIons to all the students who should be very proud of their effort and ahtude throughout the event. It was great to observe the enthusiasm and skills of all the compeItors.

Well done to all the Year 6 Leaders who assisted with organising the swimmers into races and coordinaIng the chants and cheers that occurred throughout the day. Thank you also to members of the Wellness Ministry for the amazing assistance in organising the facIon bays, marshalling the children for their events and assisIng so competently in the water.

Sincere thank you also to all the parents who assisted with marshalling and cheering.

A special Thank You and congratulaIons to Mrs Jenkins for her efforts in coordinaIng the carnival and making sure that it ran smoothly. Thank you also to all the staff who assisted on the day.

The Infant Jesus School Annual Community MeeIng for both the School Advisory Council and Parents & Friends AssociaIon will take place on Tuesday 22 November 2022 in the school hall commencing at 6.00pm.

At this Ime, Annual Reports of both representaIve bodies will be delivered, and the School Advisory Council will present the school fees for the 2023 year.

We have four posiIons on the School Advisory Council with two of the four (4) members re-nominaIng, which will see out their term 0 new nomina:ons have been received at this stage.

Parent Volunteers Mass and Morning Tea

On Thursday 24 November, a Volunteers’ Mass will be celebrated at Infant Jesus Church, followed by a morning tea in the School Hall to say ‘Thank You’ to all the parents who have volunteered and assisted with school acIviIes this year.

Volunteers at Infant Jesus School have assisted in many ways during 2022 both in classes and many other areas of the school. We acknowledge and are very grateful for the involvement of all volunteers, as it is through these people who generously give their Ime, that many benefits are provided for the students and the school. There are many posiIve outcomes of volunteering including;

• beoer communicaIon between home and school

• teachers and parents working together

• greater understanding by parents of their children’s schooling

• greater understanding of the role of teachers and the planning and organisaIon required within the classroom

• more goodwill and mutual respect between parents, teachers and staff,

• children seeing their parents and teachers sharing common beliefs, ahtudes and goals, and

• more opportuniIes to see both teachers and parents as role models. The value and importance of educaIon is shared between the home and school. We are all part of a team working cooperaIvely and collaboraIvely to assist children in their learning. We recognise that parents are a very important link between home and school and we greatly value and appreciate the support they have provided the staff and students of Infant Jesus School. Many acIviIes could not be planned without the involvement and generous commitment of the Ime and the energy of our parent volunteers.

CongratulaIons and best wishes to Miss Deanna FoI who will be commencing a teaching posiIon at Emmaus Catholic School in Dayton in 2023. Deanna commenced her teaching career at Infant Jesus School and has taught Year Five and Year Three for the last two years. During this Ime, she has demonstrated professionalism, experIse, enthusiasm and collaboraIon in ensuring that all the children love learning and school. We wish Deanna all the very best in her new role next year.

Kindergarten Informa:on Evening

A reminder to our Kindy Parents for 2023 that there will be a Kindergarten InformaIon Night on Monday 28 November 2022 in the School Hall commencing at 6.00pm for all parents of children aoending Kindergarten in 2023.

The Kindergarten InformaIon Night will provide parents with the opportunity to find out more about the school and the Kindergarten program in 2023.

2023 Enrolments

As the school undertakes the process of preparaIon for the upcoming school year, it is important that we are aware of possible movements, both in and out of the school community. The end of any school year is a busy Ime for many families insofar as transfers due to work or other personal circumstances. We have a number of families on our wait list, so if you do know you will not be returning in 2023, please write to the school so as to allow other families the opportunity to gain a posiIon at Infant Jesus School. This allows the school to plan classes and new enrolments for next year.

Pre-Kindergarten Applica:ons

Enrolments are now being taken for siblings and new students wishing to commence Pre-Kindergarten at Infant Jesus School in 2023. Families with children eligible for PreKindergarten in 2023 are required to fill out a Pre-Kindergarten Enrolment ApplicaIon Form.

School Start Times 2023

Just to inform parents in the school community that from the start of the 2023 school year the school start Ime will change.

School will commence at 8:40am with classrooms opening at the usual Ime of 8:30am. This is to align more readily with the requirements set by both the EducaIon Department and Catholic EducaIon Western Australia in relaIon to the mandated school operaIonal hours.

The before school morning supervision, for Year 1 to 6 students, will stay the same and commences at 8.00am. Children are not encouraged to arrive at school before this Ime. The Ime that class teachers (except Kindergarten) will have their classes open for the children will also stay the same with Pre-Primary to Year 6 classes opening classes at 8.30am.

Teach kids to problem solve

Michael Grose – ParenIng Ideas

When parents solve all children’s problems we not only increase their dependency on adults but we teach them to be afraid of making mistakes. That’s ferIle ground for anxiousness and perfecIonism, which oden go hand in hand.

Kids get used to bringing their problems to parents to solve.

Of course, if you keep solving them, they’ll keep bringing them. “Mum, my sister is annoying me?” “Dad, can you ask my teacher to pick me for the team?” “Hey, I can’t find my socks!”

It’s tempIng if you are in a Ime-poor family to simply jump in and help kids out.

AlternaIvely, you can take a problem-solving approach, cuing them to resolve their own problems and take responsibility for their concerns. “What can you do to make her stop annoying you?” “What’s the best approach to take with your teacher?” “Socks, smocks! Where might they be?”

Here are 5 quesEons you can ask kids to encourage them to resolve their own problems:

1. “Can you solve this yourself?” Get kids thinking they can do it.

2. “What do you think needs to happen?” Start kids thinking about solving problems.

3. “What’s the first step?”

SomeImes just gehng kids started is enough to get them working out issues themselves.

4. “How would you like me to help?” Get kids considering the type of assistance they need.

5. “What’s the best way to do this?”

Get kids assessing and prioriIsing.

Problem-solving is one of the four major skills (opImism, social skills and; independence being the others) that resilient kids share, yet it’s the one that many of us aren’t equipped to develop. Start by stepping back and asking good quesIons when kids bring you their problems to solve.

As our Year Six children are coming to the end of their primary school years the following memorable events and tradiIons will be taking place, that will form their final days at Infant Jesus School.

Friday 2 December - Year Six Family Night

This event will be a parent organised and hosted event to be held on Friday, 2 December from 6.30pm

Thursday 8 December - Gradua:on Luncheon

The Year Six students, the Leadership Team and their teachers will host a luncheon at Italian’s Restaurant. There is no cost to families for this event. We will depart Infant Jesus School by bus. Students will be allowed to wear Free Dress on this day and are to be collected early from school at approximately 1.30pm

Thursday 8 December - Gradua:on Mass at 6.00pm

The GraduaIon Mass will be held at Infant Jesus Church at 6.00pm. All Year Six students will need to wear their Infant Jesus School Summer Uniform for this event. At this celebraIon each Year Six student will receive their GraduaIon cerIficate and a school gid. GraduaIon cupcakes will be given out to all students at the end of the Mass.

Friday 9 December - Fun Day

On their final day at Infant Jesus School the Year Six students will parIcipate in a ‘Fun Day’. They will depart Infant Jesus School by bus and will be aoending an excursion organised by their class teacher. More informaIon will be distributed to families regarding this event shortly. On this day all Year Six Students are to wear their School Leaver’s Shirt.

Preparing for Advent

Advent is a Ime when ChrisIans prepare for the coming of Jesus into the world. Advent is a season of hope and waiIng. Advent is a Ime of preparaIon for celebraIng the birth of Jesus. People prepare by gehng their lives into order by praying, reading Scripture, and giving to the poor. Advent is a Ime to refocus on Christ.

The people of the Old Testament never lost hope as they waited for God to send the Messiah. The prophets, like Micah, told the people of the Old Testament to prepare for the coming of a Messiah, as promised by God. They waited, hoped and trusted God. Messiah means ‘Anointed one of God’. The Messiah would be someone filled with the Spirit of

God and he would save his people and conInue to reveal how God loves all people.

During Advent Chris:ans:

• listen to stories of the prophets, like Micah

• remember the waiIng by the prophets, and people of Israel for the coming of the Messiah. They remember that the Messiah came for all but in parIcular the poor, the outcast, the sick and the marginalised.

• conInue to pray to God as Jesus taught. Through a strengthened relaIonship with God through prayer, ChrisIans can begin to find answers to their ‘human heart’ quesIons by reflecIng on:

• God’s loving relaIonship with the people of the Old Testament

• the example of Jesus

• Scripture

• the example of holy people

• the example of people in their life

As Catholics, we are excitedly preparing to celebrate Advent with the first Sunday of Advent on 27 November 2022.

The word ‘Advent’ means ‘coming’. When we light the candles on the wreath, it symbolises the coming of light (Jesus) into the world.

Candle 1 (violet): represents hope Candle 2 (violet): represents peace Candle 3 (rose): represents joy Candle 4 (violet): represents love

The central white candle is lit on Christmas Day and represents Christ.

Advent wreaths can be used in church, at school or at home. As the Advent wreath helps us keep our thoughts focused on the coming of Jesus at Christmas, it should be integrated into our daily lives. Your family could gather around the wreath at a set Ime of the day as a family member lights the relevant candle.

• The seedpods, nuts and cones are used to decorate a wreath and are symbolic of life and resurrecIon.

• The laurel signifies victory over persecuIon and suffering.

• Pine and holly signify immortality.

• The apple represents the nourishing frui{ulness of the ChrisIan life.

The past long and not-solong ago…

This term, the Year Ones have been learning about the past and how it compares to our present day! We started the term by interviewing some experts within our own families - our grandparents. We then used this informaIon to create our own digital books that showcased the differences between our grandparents’ lives in the past and how they compare to our lives in the present. Strangely enough, we discovered most of our grandparents had to walk to school!

We have also been fortunate enough to convert parts of the classroom into mini museums full of plenty of ‘treasures’ from the past. From the past ‘quite’ long ago, we’ve seen old radios; cooking and kitchen utensils; washing boards; vinyls; binoculars and plenty of other cool items. From the past ‘not-so-long’ ago, we’ve seen one of the first iPods; video casseoes; old scienIfic calculators and some old gaming consoles - pre-nintendo switch!

Class News

Our Reconcilia:on Retreat

On Friday the 4th of November 2022, the Year 3 students had their ReconciliaIon retreat at 9am. We went there to prepare ourselves for our upcoming sacrament, ReconciliaIon. We went to the Parish Hall. In the Parish Hall there were the students of Year 3 and our leaders Georgia, Maddie, Jennifer, Jesse and William.

First, we played follow the leader but a different way that you have to copy a certain person and another person tries to find out who the leader is. Then, we ripped a cup into 10 pieces and then tried to sIck it back together to learn that it is easier to break the 10 commandments then fix it back together.

Next we watched a nice video about rules and forgiving. Then, we made a poster about what the world would be like if no one followed the rules, and if everyone followed the rules. Then, it was recess.

Ader recess we played a game called popper which is when two people link arms and they get separated. One person has a pool noodle and has to chase them around and the person running has to link on with another pair. The person on the other side has to run and do the same process over and over again.

Next, we made a booklet with our sins in it and we wrote ‘Forgiven' on the cover of the booklet and coloured it in. Then, we had our delicious lunch and we played around the church area. Ader that, we played musical bobs and Logan won!

Then, we played stuck in the mud which was a really cool great game. You have to run around and there is a tagger which was Charlooe, SebasIan, Kaiden, Isabella and Allegra. Next, we wrote on a piece of paper what we had to forgive others for and then we glued them together or sIcky taped them together to learn that when we have ReconciliaIon our sins disappear. Then, we watched a role play about the Parable of the Prodigal Son to learn that even if we do something wrong God sIll loves us no maoer what.

Next, we watched a science experiment explaining that when we go to ReconciliaIon Jesus saves us from our sins. Ader that, we coloured a picture of a foot. Once we coloured it in, we placed our foot in front of a picture of Jesus for it to look like a footpath of lots of feet to show us all following Jesus’ path.

Finally, our retreat was over. We had lots of fun at our ReconciliaIon retreat and it made us so excited to receive the wonderful Sacrament of ReconciliaIon.

Year 6

Dancing Lessons

In preparaIon for the Year Six Social Evening in Week 8, we have been learning how to dance. Rosa from ‘The Regent Ballroom’, and her assistants Harley and Bella, visit each Wednesday adernoon to teach us many social and formal dances.

We have learnt individual dances such as the slosh, and partner dances such as the jive and barn dance. These dances have been fun to learn and have required a lot of concentraIon and pracIce.

We thank Rosa, Harley and Bella for their commitment and pa sharing our new dance moves at the Year Six Social Evening.

Fac:on Athle:cs Carnival

At the start of the term, we held our FacIon AthleIcs Carnival. This year we were back at the Noranda SporIng complex and what an amazing day it was. The track was in prisIne condiIon, and it was wonderful to see all the children trying their best to earn points for their facIon. All the children from Pre-Primary to Year 6 must be congratulated on their effort, teamwork and cheering. In the end we had an extremely close finish, and it was Lima who won the 2022 FacIon AthleIcs Carnival by 115 points! CongratulaIons Lima.

Overall results:

I would like to thank the P & F and the wonderful parent helpers who worked extremely hard throughout the day to ensure the carnival ran smoothly. I would also like to thank the Wellness Ministry who did a fantasIc job helping in their bays supporIng wherever they were needed.

Inter School Athle:cs Carnival

On Thursday, 3 November our AthleIcs squad made up of selected Years Three - Six children represented our school at the CPSSA Inter School AthleIcs Carnival. Due to the WA AthleIc Stadium being re-turfed the carnival was held at the Ern Clark AthleIc Stadium. The team showed great pride and sportsmanship on the day and should be commended for their efforts. Each child tried their best in their events with many children taking home place ribbons and achieving personal bests. I would like to thank Miss Witkowski, Mr Colangelo and Mrs Greener for their amazing efforts in looking ader our children. I also want to make special menIon of Mrs Mammone, Mrs D’Souza and Mrs Jovanovic who gave up their Ime to help out on the track. It was an extremely warm day and we are very grateful for their help.

Infant Jesus Talent

I love hearing stories about our talented students at Infant Jesus and I would like to acknowledge one of our Year 5 students; Harrison Howio

On Friday, 28 October Harrison was selected to compete in the WA School Sport “Champion of Champions” AthleIcs Carnival at the UWA Liole AthleIcs Club. Harrison competed in both the 100m and 200m and represented Infant Jesus with great honour. In the 200m Harrison ran a Ime of 30.53sec and came 4th overall, narrowly missing 2nd posiIon by 0.19 seconds!

The dedicaIon Harrison shows towards all his sport and training is simply astounding and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for him. Well done, Harrison!

Year 5 Summer Carnival

Last Friday our Year 5 students ventured to Coolbinia to parIcipate in the annual Year 5 Summer Carnival. The students played either Tennis, Cricket or UlImate Frisbee with the aim of the carnival being parIcipaIon and having fun! The fixtures were organised in a round-robin format against 7 other schools in our CPSSA. Tennis was held at the Alexander Park Tennis club in Coolbinia and a big thank you must go to Mrs Tartaglia, Mrs Jovanovic, Mr D’Cunha and Mrs Boni for stepping up as team managers. The Football and Cricket carnival was held at Coolbinia Reserve and we must thank Mr Yates and Mrs Hannah for their amazing coaching skills! Health Balanced Diet

Our Infant Jesus students have been learning about the Australian Guide to Healthy EaIng. The Guide is a food selecIon tool which visually represents the proporIon of the five food groups recommended for consumpIon each day. The kids have learnt how a balanced meal will include food items from the five food groups; grains, vegetables, fruit, dairy and protein. A balanced diet provides the body with essenIal nutriIon to maintain good health.

In Health, the Year One students have analysed the Australian Guide to Healthy EaIng, have recreated it and have used the Guide to sort their own lunch and recess into the food groups. The Year One’s were lucky that their Year Six buddies could help them to take the photos of their lunch.

Code of Conduct at Infant Jesus School

Purpose

The purpose of the Code of Conduct is to describe minimum standards of conduct in all behaviour and decision making to ensure the safety and well-being of students.

Applica:on

The Code applies to staff, students, volunteers, parents and guardians as applicable. The term ‘parents’ includes guardians.

Introduc:on

You acknowledge the inherent vulnerability of the students in your care.

You recognise that the safety and well-being of students depends upon your vigilance and diligence and the vigilance and diligence of all adults.

The Code does not give you detailed professional advice on specific behaviour. Rather, it describes the minimum requirements expected of you.

The Guidelines are illustraIve and not an exhausIve list of the behaviours covered by the Code.

If your behaviour varies from the standards described in this Code and Guidelines, you should be prepared to explain and jusIfy your decisions and acIons.

While mandatory language such as ‘must’, ‘shall’ and ‘will’ is not used throughout the Code, there is a presumpIon the conduct described is mandatory and therefore not discreIonary.

The Principal expects you to conduct yourself personally and professionally in a way that maintains public trust and confidence in your school and the Church.

You have a responsibility to students and their family, other members of the school community and the wider community to provide and support safe and competent educaIon and care of students.

You will do your best to support other members of the school community to comply with the Code.

In cases of conflict between parts of the Code, between the Code and other school policies, or in any decision making choices, you give priority to the outcome that will be in the best interests of the safety and well-being of the child.

2022 Technology Interschool Challenge

Last Tuesday, 8 November Infant Jesus School hosted the 2022 Technology Interschool Challenge. Students from Infant Jesus School worked alongside students from Sacred Heart Thornlie, Mercy College Koondoola and Holy Cross College to solve tasks based on the book, We Are Australians.

Students parIcipated in a range of acIviIes including flying drones, escaping from an ‘escape’ room, programming robots, creaIng circuits and wriIng code. This event allowed our students to work alongside students from other schools and put their technology skills to the test by using new roboIcs that our school does not have.

We're now two weeks into our Wine Fundraiser with Wise Wines from Eagle Bay. Have you ordered your wines / spirits yet? Just in Ime for Christmas, your teacher's gid will be sorted! Please see poster below for more details.

School Uniform Swap Meet

A uniform swap meet will be held on the last day of school - Friday 9th December in the school hall from 8am. Sellers to set up from 7:45am. Doors open for Buyers from 8am. Swap meet finishes at 9am. All items for sale must be the new uniform style and logo and be in good condiIon. Buyers and sellers must arrange their own payment - either cash on the morning or make a direct electronic funds transfer to the seller to pay for the items. No need to RSVP, just come along early to grab a bargain.

Lost Property

The lost property basket will be cleared out in Week 9 so if your child is missing anything, please check the lost property basket near the i-Lab this week. Any unclaimed items will be donated or sold at the Uniform Swap Meet.

Any old (clean and undamaged) uniforms can be donated to charity via the yellow sulo bins located at the front entry gates near admin. Thank you to our lovely parents who sort and arrange these old uniforms to be donated to a charity in need. We appreciate your Ime spent on this acIvity.

Neon Disco

Don’t forget to grab your disco Icket for tomorrow’s disco. There will be food available to purchase.

Christmas Concert Raffle

Bring your small change and purchase a raffle Icket while at the annual school Christmas concert on Tuesday 6th December. Raffle prizes will be drawn on the night.
