From the Principal

Dear Lord, help me to live each day quietly, easily.

To lean upon your strength truthfully, res;ully. To wait for the unfolding of your will pa=ently, serenely. To meet others peacefully, joyfully.

To face tomorrow confidently, courageously. Amen.

Welcome to our Week 2 newsleXer.

A very warm welcome to Miss Napoli, Mrs McDonald and Miss Du Toit who have have joined our teaching team for the rest of the year. We look forward to hearing about all of the great things that are happening in your classrooms. Sadly we farewell Mrs Lauren Jenkins tomorrow. Mrs Jenkins has been a student at Infant Jesus, has spent most of her teaching career at our school and has made a huge impact on our community. We wish her all the best as she broadens her horizons. We are very pleased that Miss Kate Witkowski will be joining us full Gme to teach both Phys Ed and Health.

CongratulaGons to Mr Rocco Capolingua who last week competed in the World Taekwondo Grand Prix Challenge, winning his event and becoming the Open World Taekwondo champion. We are thrilled for Mr Capolingua!

CongratulaGons also to the Trutwein family who have welcomed a new baby brother to their family. Welcome to the Infant Jesus community Oliver.

We are trialling the URStrong program in our school with our Year 2, 3 and 5 classes. URStrong is about empowering kids with friendship skills and will become a school wide program next year. Teachers of these classes will be sending home informaGon via SeeSaw about what is happening in the classes and how parents can be involved. We will also be publishing some informaGon in our newsleXers.

Sadly some of our families experienced the loss of a loved one over the school holidays and our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult Gme. The school is here to support any of our families who experience loss and we are fortunate that we have our Social Worker on site to help guide them.

Our Year 3 and 5 students will be parGcipaGng in the Religious EducaGon Assessment (REA) next week. This assessment is a system wide assessment which helps to measure student learning of the content in the Religious EducaGon curriculum. NAPLAN results for these classes will be sent home tomorrow. If you haven’t already chaXed to your child’s teacher about these, please don’t hesitate to contact them directly to make an appointment.

If you have not already reserved your Gcket for our Surf Safe Online Parent session on the 9 August, please do so as soon as possible as Paul Litherland is an excellent presenter about online awareness and Cyber Safety. This event is free.

We have some fantasGc community events coming up this term, such as the Rock and Pop Music Bingo, Infant Jesus Day, our AthleGcs Carnival and Learning Journey’s. Please check the details for these as we would love to see everyone there.

iShow, iExplain, iLearnt (Learning Journeys)

Parent Teacher Online

Learning Journeys will be held this Term for Kindergarten - Years 6 on 11 September, Monday of Week 9 from 3.20 – 6.00pm. The interview booking system will go live on the 21 August at 9.00am.

For these interviews we are conGnuing to use the internet-based booking system called Parent Teacher On-Line (PTO). It will save Gme for parents, staff and students! Using this system, you will be able to book the interview Gmes that suit you best from any internet-connected device. A computer will be available in the library during school hours if you do not have internet access at home or elsewhere.

Please access the system as follows:

• Click on the following link – haps://www.infantjesus.wa.edu.au/pto/

• Click “Obtain PIN/Password” and enter your email address. Your PIN will be emailed to you. This will email you your password to access PTO. Please note that the email address is the email address that you have provided as contact details with the school.

• Full instrucGons are provided to you aler log in. Please note the following points:

• When you log on, the system displays only your own child/children. Bookings are made for individual parents/guardians, not for couples. Couples can however log on to the system simultaneously to coordinate bookings. If two parents/guardians wish to aXend a single interview Gme slot, one parent/guardian should make the booking then both can aXend.

• You will only see Gme slots that are available at the Gme you are using the system. As Gme slots are booked for teachers, those Gme slots are no longer displayed as available. PTO prevents double-booking of teachers or parents/guardians.

• When you have made all the bookings you require, you can download or email a report of your bookings in Gme order for prinGng.

Soundwaves

This year we are working in partnership to assist children in learning phonics/sounds during 2023.

Week 3

• · ar a is most commonly represented by the grapheme ar (e.g. car, start).

• · The grapheme a for ar is olen used before s ss se ce x c or f ff ph (e.g. ask, craK).

• The grapheme al is an unusual way to represent ar a (e.g. half, palm).

• The grapheme au is an unusual way to represent ar a (e.g. laugh, aunt).

• · ar a is also the name of the leXer r. In discussing ar a we always clarify that we are talking about the phoneme, not the leXer name. For example, say ‘Which words have the ar a sound ?’ instead of ‘Which words have ar a ?’

Week 4

• · We usually use ss aler short vowel sounds at the end of single-syllable words (e.g. floss, dress).

• · We can use c for s ss se ce x c before e, i or y (e.g. cent, centre, city, pencil, cylinder, fancy).

• We can use x for the two sounds k c q ck x ch and s ss se ce x c (e.g. six, box, wax, next, sixty).

• The graphemes se and ce for are usually used at the end of words (e.g. mouse, horse, dance, peace).

• · The grapheme sc is an unusual way to represent s ss se ce x c (e.g. scissors, muscle).

• · The grapheme st is an unusual way to represent s ss se ce x c (e.g. listen, castle).

We are Called

Third World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly

Last Sunday, 23 July, Pope Francis shared a message for the Third World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly.

The theme of ‘His mercy is from age to age’ (Lk 1:50) is shared when Mary visited her elder cousin Elizabeth and is also reflected each day as we listen to the Spirit and, through our words and acGons conGnue to bring joy to the hearts of the elderly and gain wisdom from their experiences.

This was highlighted today as we welcomed and celebrated the grandparents and elderly in our school community with a special assembly, visits to the classrooms, a prayer card and morning tea.

Feast of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop

On 8 August we celebrate the life of Mary MacKillop, Australia’s first saint.

Mary MacKillop was born in Melbourne in 1842. Aler what was considered a challenging childhood, Mary was forced to leave home at the age of fourteen to work and provide money for her family.

By the Gme she was fileen, Mary had decided she was going to become a nun. She wanted to devote her life to God and to assist the poor. With Fr Julian Tension Woods she founded Australia’s first order of nuns - the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart. Led by Mary MacKillop the nuns helped the poor through their teaching and schools and their care provided at orphans and refuges.

Mary MacKillop truly lived and passed on the Gospel values. Her love, faith, trust, commitment and enthusiasm live on in our lives today. She is a wonderful inspiraGon and model for all.

Today we can all follow Mary as we can also “Never see a need ... without trying to do something about it.”

Feast of St Dominic

St Dominic founded the Dominican order many centuries ago. He was very faith-filled and engaging preacher and proclaimer who inspired many to join him in sharing Truth and the Good News through their work and prayer life.

The Dominican order, through the Dominican Sisters established Infant Jesus School in 1954. Today the Dominican charism of Truth and the example of St Dominic inspires all in our school community, in Australia and around the world.

At Infant Jesus School Calaroga facGon is linked to St Dominic as this is his birthplace and it is from St Dominic that we inherited our school newsleXer Gtle – VERITAS which means Truth.

Next week, we will celebrate the Feast of St Dominic on Thursday 3 August with a Whole School Mass at Infant Jesus Church commencing at 9.00am.

Pre-Primary to Year 6 children will be aXending and parents are also very welcome.

Overall, Infant Jesus School came 11th which was a superb effort,

A big thank you must go to Mrs Karen Holden and Ms Natalia Ruiz for their amazing efforts in distribuGng the medals and ribbons. In what was tough condiGons I really appreciate the support. 3D Shapes Everywhere!

Year One began the term by focusing on 3D shapes in MathemaGcs. We explored the properGes of common 3D shapes and counted how many faces, edges and corners each has. Each day we worked on different acGvity rotaGons to help us to understand these properGes beXer.

There was a creaGon staGon where we used play dough to sculpt each 3D shape, a quiz about the es of shapes and we even made our very own 3D shape using the shapes net. It was very tricky, but we tried our very best!

Our favourite task was a 3D quesGon hunt around the classroom, where there were 24 quesGons hidden and we needed to figure out the answers using what our teachers had taught us. We found out the answers on Friday and it was awesome! Did you know that ‘verGces’ and ‘corners’ mean the same thing? Stay tuned for some more fun learning!

Caring for Our Common Home

This week in Religion, students in Year Six have been looking at the earth and its resources and learning about ways we can help care for our common home. The Year Six students have been invesGgaGng companies that are making a posiGve impact in the sustainability sector.

The Year Sixes have researched companies such as Envision Hands where recycled plasGc boXle tops are used to help create prostheGc hands using 3D printers for children in war torn countries. Some other examples include Wheelchairs for Kids and The Ocean Clean Up.

Year Six

Safe School Framework

Guidelines

1. You promote and preserve the trust inherent in your relaGonship with students and with their parents.

2. You recognise that an inherent power imbalance exists within your relaGonship with students that may make the students and their family vulnerable and open to exploitaGon. You acGvely preserve the dignity of all people through pracGsed kindness and by recognising the potenGal vulnerability and powerlessness of each student and their family. You recognise that the power relaGviGes between you and a student can be significant, parGcularly where the student is very young, has a disability, a difficult family background, has cultural differences, or experiencing emoGonal turmoil. This vulnerability creates a power differenGal in your relaGonship with students that must be recognised and managed with care.

3. You take reasonable measures to establish a sense of trust to protect the physical, psychological, emoGonal, social and cultural well-being of each student. You protect students who are vulnerable, including but not limited to students with disability, from exploitaGon and harm.

4. You have a responsibility to maintain appropriate boundaries with students and to acGvely support other adults to do likewise, including bringing to their aXenGon any failure to do so.

5. You may have personal or recreaGonal relaGonships outside your school role with students’ families and friends, or with school staff. You are aware that dual relaGonships may compromise student care and well-being. In cases of overlap or conflict between your dual relaGonships, you act with the primary intent of the safety and wellbeing of the student, which may require you to withdraw from a social relaGonship.

6. You do not engage in any behaviour with a student that could be interpreted by a reasonable person as being a friendship.

7. You do not engage in any behaviour with a student that a reasonable person could interpret as creaGng an opportunity to engage in emoGonal, physical or sexual inGmacy with a student.

8. You recognise that the power imbalance between you and students means that the onus is on you to avoid any ambiguity or misunderstanding by a student or third party about your intent in your behaviour towards them.

9. You understand that the power imbalance between you and students means a student is unable to give their consent to engaging in emoGonal, physical or sexual inGmacy with you, regardless of the legal age of consent, or the student’s age or maturity. You must therefore not seek nor rely on such express or implied consent from a student to engage in an inGmate relaGonship.

10. You understand that the power imbalance between you and students may conGnue to influence students’ choices beyond the date when they cease to be students at your school. You must therefore not engage in emoGonal, physical or sexual inGmacy with a former student within two years of them ceasing enrolment at your school, or them turning 21, whichever occurs latest.

11. You take all reasonable steps to ensure the safety and security of the possessions and property of students and their families that are in your care.

12. You do not knowingly mislead parents or make misrepresenGng statements to them, or withhold informaGon relevant to their ability to make informed decisions about their children unless required by law.

13. You recognise that there may be rare excepGons to full disclosure to parents. Such disclosure of informaGon may compromise law enforcement or other risk management processes, or the privacy and reputaGon of those involved. You seek legal or other expert advice in resolving such situaGons, recognising that parents have the right to know about any risk to their children.

Staff Example of Specific Behaviours but not limited to:

• Staff to be mindful of the extent of personal informaGon that they share with parents and students.

• Recognise and accept differences in background, disabiliGes, culture, etc.

• Keep relaGonships with parents and students on a professional level. Staff to noGfy Principal of any deviaGon from this.

Parents Example of Specific Behaviours but not limited to:

· Maintain appropriate behaviour at school funcGons and events.

· Parents to respect staff and treat them in a professional manner.

Students Example of Specific Behaviours but not limited to:

· Students to respect staff and treat them in a professional manner.

· Students to look aler each other and their property.

Volunteers/Visitors Example of Specific Behaviours but not limited to:

· EducaGonal relaGonship with students and parents.

Conduct Statement 9:
You promote and preserve the trust and privilege inherent in your relaeonship with all members of the school community.
