Creator of the Universe, You made us in your image and likeness and have asked us to 8ll and keep the earth. Guide our choices and help us to walk into the future by Caring for Our Common Home. We make this prayer in your name. Amen.
Welcome to the Week 4 newsleZer.
Today is Na>onal Walk Safely to School Day and it was wonderful to see so many students join us with their families as we made our way from the Infant Jesus Church to School.
We look forward to a number of important events next week. Wednesday 24 May is Na>onal Simultaneous Story->me, on Thursday 25 May we have our Year 5 Assembly and on Friday 26 May we will have our Fac>on Cross Country.
Please join us at 7pm on Tuesday 30 May for our P&F Mee>ng in the Library. It is a good opportunity to connect with other parents and to be a part of the wonderful things that are happening in our school. All parents are welcome.
Next week we will be collec>ng informa>on to help us make informed decisions about how we can improve our school. The aim of this process is to build and maintain a posi>ve school climate in which your child/children will flourish. To help us in our efforts, we are invi>ng you to respond to the Parent and Caregiver Survey. A link will be sent out on Monday. Your response will provide us with the informa>on and founda>onal focus points that we will use in planning our school improvement efforts.
Please keep the following staff members in your prayers. Mrs Anne Foley on the loss of her son Trenton, Mr Alex EllioZ on the loss of his grandmother and to Mrs Jennifer Le Coultre on the sudden loss of her father. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult >me.
Enjoy the rest of the week.
Mel Allen PrincipalThis week during Na>onal Volunteer Week (15 – 21 May) Australia recognises and celebrates those who generously give of their >me to volunteer and help others. Volunteers assist in further developing school and community spirit. The Infant Jesus School community is very thankful and grateful for the many volunteers who generously give of their >me to assist in our classes, in our events and through their involvement in our School Advisory Council and P&F. Just in the next few weeks our generous volunteers will be suppor>ng and assis>ng with the Fac>on Cross Country event and the Winter Carnival. Volunteering can commence at any >me aeer comple>ng the Infant Jesus School Volunteer Workshop.
On Wednesday 24 May children from Kindergarten to Year Six will join the Na>onal Simultaneous Story >me live event. Every year a picture book, wriZen and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its twenty third successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book. This year ‘The Speedy Sloth’ will be read. What a fabulous way to show children and share with them the love of reading.
Please make sure that these details are included in your email as this is a legal document. Parents must provide the teacher with a wriZen explana>on as to the cause of a child’s absence or a doctor’s cer>ficate. A note is also to be given to the class teacher and the school office if the child is absent for an extended period e.g. illness, holidays.
To ensure the safety of all children, parents are asked to no>fy the school by 9.00am if a child will be absent on a par>cular day. The Department of Educa>on has confirmed that whilst a phone message is not a subs>tute for a signed note when repor>ng absences, an email mee>ng with the following criteria is acceptable;
- the name of the student
- the class/roll group of the student
- the reason for the absence
- the full name of the parent/guardian at the end of the message (the ‘from’ email address is not sufficient as it does not necessarily have the full name of the person sending it).
This year we are working in partnership to assist children in further developing their spelling skills and knowledge using the Soundwaves Spelling resource across the school. The focus for Year 1 to Year 6 for next week and Week 6 is -
• L, ll is most frequently represented by the grapheme l (e.g. leg, release, pencil).
• We usually use ll aeer short vowel sounds at the end of single-syllable words (e.g. spill, smell). (Helpful Hint)
• It can be hard to hear er, ar, or, a, e, i, o, u in words ending in le (e.g. table, people), which is why they can be segmented two ways. If you hear l, ll for le, write le in one box. If you hear for le, write le across two boxes.
• The grapheme ee for ee, e, ea, y, ey is usually used in the middle or at the end of words (e.g. see, green).
• We oeen use y for ee, e, ea, y, ey at the end of words (e.g. any, jelly, baby, puppy, twenty). We do not usually use y for ee, e, ea, y, ey at the start or in the middle of words. (Helpful Hint)
• The grapheme ey for ee, e, ea, y, ey is usually used at the end of words (e.g. honey, valley).
• The grapheme eo in the word people is an unusual way to represent ee, e, ea, y, ey
• ee, e, ea, y, ey is also the name of the leFer e. When discussing ee, e, ea, y, ey with students, always clarify you are talking about the phoneme, not the leFer name. For example, say ‘Which words have the sound ee, e, ea, y, ey?’ instead of ‘Which words have ee, e, ea, y, ey ?’
Congratula>ons to the following students who will receive a merit award on Thursday 25 May 2023 as an acknowledgement and celebra>on of all their hard work.

Laudato Si' Week first began as a way to celebrate the first anniversary of Pope Francis' world-changing papal encyclical leZer, “Laudato Si': On Care For Our Common Home.”
Pope Francis’ encyclical has helped the world’s 1.3 billion Catholics understand that “everything is connected” and put previous Catholic teachings in the context of today’s ecological crisis and climate emergency.
At school, our children are passionate about caring for the environment. If you would like to acknowledge this special week at home, the Catholic Office for Jus>ce, Ecology and Peace have created a range of ac>vi>es and reflec>ons- hZps://laudatosiweek.org/ resources/

Pentecost is celebrated 50 days aeer Easter Sunday. This year, Pentecost falls on Sunday 28th May.
Pentecost is oeen referred to as the birthday of the Church because on this day the apostles went out among the people and began sharing Jesus’ message and the mission of the Church.
On the day of Pentecost, the Apostles were all gathered together in one place and God sent the Holy Spirit to give them the power to teach others about Jesus. When the Apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit, they had the ability to speak in languages that they didn't even know, so that they could tell everyone about Jesus.
The Holy Spirit is s>ll with people today as they draw on the strength and guidance of the Holy Spirit in their lives.
Before the Holy Spirit came to the Apostles, they were afraid to teach others about Jesus. Pentecost changed them completely, so that they had the courage to teach openly and freely about Jesus. As the Apostles taught about Jesus in different communi>es, thousands of those who heard them also became Chris>ans.
Like the Apostles at Pentecost, Catholics today receive the Holy Spirit. We do so through the Sacrament of Confirma>on that our Year Six students will receive later in this term.
Please join the Parish on Sunday 28th May to celebrate the birth day of the Church.
We have had a wonderful start to Term Two. The children have aZended their first whole school Mass at Infant Jesus Church where we celebrated our mum’s and par>cipated prayerfully.
This term, we will focus on the theme of fairytales. The children will also be taking home a special Pre-Primary friend. His name is Monty Bear.
We look forward to hearing the children share their experiences with their Pre-Primary class.
Year Three students have been engaging in learning about, listening to and ac>ng out a variety of parables Jesus told to teach others about forgiveness, how precious we are to God, not to give up and God will always light a path for us. Parables we have enjoyed learning about include The Lost Coin, The Lost Sheep and The Lost Son (Prodigal Son).
Our crea>ve ar>sts have started crea>ng a variety of cine models for the key items and characters of the parable The Lost Coin, as we prepare to retell this parable and its message. This week we have started produc>on of our Stop Mo>on anima>ons that retell the story and the message we learn from Jesus; “We are all precious to God and loved by him, he will light our path to guide us back to him when we are lost.”
On Friday, 5 May our Swimming Squad made up of a selec>on of Year Four - Year Six children represented our school at the CPSSA Interschool Swimming Carnival. Due to winning the carnival two years ago we were compe>ng in A Division! The compe>>on was extremely tough, but that didn’t stop our swimmers from giving their all!. Their dedica>on and sportsmanship was simply amazing and they all had smiles on their faces throughout the en>re day. Each child tried their best in their events with some children taking home place ribbons and achieving personal bests.
I would like to thank Mr Colangelo and Mrs Mabbs for their amazing effort in marshalling and looking aeer our children. I also want to make special men>on to the parents who helped on the day: Mrs Green (who did an amazing job as the starter), Mrs Wiles, Mrs Fernando and Mr Ferrara who was happy to jump in when needed. Overall, It was a great team effort, well done Infant Jesus!
Infant Jesus has registered for the Western Australian Football Commission ‘Design an AFL Jumper’ Compe>>on. The compe>>on is open to all keen students in Year 4-6. The aim of the compe>>on is to get students to demonstrate a sense of school pride/iden>ty and enable them to be involved in football in a cross curricular manner. The WAFC ask that students pay aZen>on to local landmarks, their school ethos and loca>on as well as popula>on and demographics when construc>ng their design. Entries must be accompanied by a short reflec>on on the reasons for the design. The jumper template will be distributed to classes and placed on Seesaw this week. Further informa>on will be uploaded to Seesaw and handed to class teachers. Infant Jesus School will submit two overall winners to the WAFC. The overall winner will receive a set of jumpers in the winning design! Small prizes will be awarded to the winners of each Year level.
Happy designing!

Mrs Lauren JenkinsMeanwhile, the Year Two students just finished a unit on being sun smart, where they explored the slip, slop, slap, slide and seek sun safety measures. They even came up with two extra measures, sip and see! Before you go into the sun, don’t forget to ask your child what sip and see mean!
Finally, the Year Three class has just begun a unit on physical ac>vity in the natural and built environments of our local community. They will learn about the benefits of exercise, the recommenda>ons around exercise and the different places that encourages physical ac>vity. We are so proud of our students and their eagerness to learn and grow.
