This year we will conXnue to be working in partnership to assist children in learning phonics/sounds during 2024.

Week 1

• is most frequently represented by the grapheme g (e.g. goose, wig).

• The grapheme gg for is seen aoer short vowel sounds (e.g. juggle, wiggle).

• The grapheme gu can represent (e.g. guest, guide).

• The grapheme x can represent the two phonemes (e.g. example, exact).

• The grapheme gue can represent (e.g. faXgue, vague). Words containing gue for usually originate from French.

Week 2 -

Week 5 -

ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. The soldiers in those forces became known as ANZACs. Anzac Day is a commemoraXon of the anniversary of the landing of Australian and New Zealand troops at Gallipoli, Turkey on 25 April in 1915. When Great Britain declared war against Germany for its invasion of Belgium in 1914, Australia and New Zealand, as Dominions within the BriXsh Empire, regarded themselves automaXcally also at war.

At dawn on 25 April 1915, the first of approximately 70,000 soldiers from the Allies landed at Gallipoli. The objecXve was to drive through to Istanbul, take Turkey out of the war and to provide supplies to Russia in its fight against Germany. Out of these 70,000 soldiers, more than 20,000 were Australian and New Zealand soldiers. What had been planned as a bold stroke became a stalemate aoer the invading troops failed to reach their objecXve on the first day. For the next eight months they clung to the land they had captured, before eventually withdrawing at the end of 1915.

Aoer both sides had suffered heavy casualXes, the Allied forces were evacuated. It is esXmated that 8,700 Australian and 2,700 New Zealanders were killed. One year later, in 1916, the first anniversary of the landing was observed in Australia, New Zealand and England and by troops in Egypt. That year, 25 April was officially named ‘Anzac Day’ by the AcXng Australian Prime Minister, George Pearce.

We are inviting you to share your favourite or lasting memory of your time at Infant Jesus School. Please submit your story and image/s by completing the form https://forms.office.com/r/ yysH4BJ932

Whether you are a current student, past student, parent, teacher or friend of the school we want to hear from you. A selection of stories will be featured throughout 2024 as we celebrate 70 years as a school.

ANZAC Ted

In Year Two this week, we have been learning all about ANZAC Day. In reading, we read the story Anzac Ted by Belinda Landsberry.

The story was about a teddy bear who looked really sad. He had missing bits, sXtches on his tummy and only one eye. We learnt in the story that Anzac Ted went to war with grandpa for good luck and to keep him safe.

The children designed their own ANZAC teddy bears and in wriXng, wrote a leTer to Anzac Ted asking him quesXons about his Xme in the war. Year

HARMONY DAY

On the 21st of March 2024 Infant Jesus School celebrated Harmony Day. The reason why we celebrated Harmony Day is to include others. Harmony Day is held every year on 21 March to coincide with the United NaXons InternaXonal Day for the EliminaXon of Racial DiscriminaXon, the message of Harmony Day is everyone belongs. It's a day to celebrate Australia's diversity – a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home. The students at Infant Jesus School recognised Harmony Day by wearing the colours yellow, orange, and red. We also did some fun acXviXes with our buddies. We believe everybody belongs.
