This commemorates the rescue of the Jews in ancient Persia from a would-be Hitler, Haman. The heroine of the story is Queen Esther. The Book of Esther is read; costumes are worn; Hamantaschen are eaten; wild merriment, including plays and “roasts” of authorities, are enjoyed.
This solemn observance begins the Jewish year and the Days of Awe, a 10-day period of judgement, repentance and prayer culminating in Yom Kippur. The shofar, the ram’s horn, is sounded 100 times. The festive meals include apples dipped in honey.
