State of the Junior Association

International Junior Brangus Breeders Association Thrives

017 marks a milestone for the International Junior Brangus Breeders Association (IJBBA) - our 40th year as an organization devoted to the youth of this amazing breed and the beef industry! IJBBA has made huge strides in its 40 years and that is largely due to the Brangus breeders who truly believe that the juniors are the future of our association. Today, many who grew up through the junior program are taking the reins in their family operations and assuming the roles they have been groomed to take!

Others from our junior association are actively involved in the beef and agricultural industries working to ensure that the lifestyle and livelihood we know and love are around for years to come. Numerous former IJBBA members are returning to the association with their kids and Brangus animals in tow!

Furthermore, 2017 marks the 36th year for the National Junior Brangus Show (NJBS). Who would have imagined 36 years ago, a group of juniors bringing 25 head to Moberly, Missouri, would serve as the foundation for today’s week-long event that has grown to over 150 exhibitors and over 337 entries? Time has changed a lot of things but the comradery that helped establish the NJBS 36 years ago is still alive and evident year after year! NJBS is a true “Brangus Family Reunion!”

First and foremost in regards to the IJBBA’s state is this publication!

While the NJBS coverage has always been in the Brangus Journal,

the timing of NJBS and Journal issues forced the IJBBA Board and Advisory Committee to look into alternative options to get NJBS results publicized. Additionally, with IJBBA’s growth, new activities, and amount of coverage needed to adequately cover the extensive work and effort IJBBA members put into their projects, everyone involved thought it was time IJBBA returned to publishing some form of communication piece. IJBBA used to publish several newsletters each year that went out at key times of the year to the IJBBA membership.

While those newsletters have not been published in over 15 years, the IJBBA Board and Advisors are excited about this magazine you are reading and the future it has to help the junior association continue to grow and thrive!

In this inaugural issue of JUNIOR Brangus, you will read about the many activities IJBBA is offering its members. IJBBA is not just about showing cattle, it is devoted to building tomorrow’s leaders through the NJBS contests, the Legacy Leadership Conference, the Youth Beef industry Congress and the IJBBA Board of Directors.

The past few years have been exceptionally rewarding to IJBBA in terms of fundraising and financial stability. IJBBA has really been able to position itself in solid financial standing because of the support it has received from Brangus breeders and supporters! IJBBA is committed to building a legacy within the breed and industry to be

STATE OF THE JUNIOR ASSOCIATION able to keep our youth at the forefront of the beef industry.

Some of the exciting things in the future for IJBBA include: The IJBBA Board of Directors is currently gearing up for the fall IBBA National Point Shows, the Western National Brangus Show in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and the Brangus Show of Merit in Shreveport, Louisiana. Five IJBBA board members and the International Brangus Queen will travel to each show to give back to Brangus exhibitors by providing ring assistance and support during each show. Additionally during each of these shows, committees within the IJBBA board will begin the process of planning the 2018 NJBS. Ideas and thoughts will begin to flow and take shape as board members devote the next 10 months of their life to the planning and organization of NJBS 2018!

The Fall Meeting for the IJBBA Board of Directors and IJBBA Advisory Committee will immediately follow The National Show of Merit. The board and advisors will be traveling to Hutchinson, Kansas, for the meeting along with numerous team building and leadership activities as well as site visits to the host hotel and the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

These activities and events help to not only bring the board members closer together but also to help them as they prepare to host the NJBS. They will have a better understanding of the facilities and how contests will operate so that they can spend time working on the intricate details that are required to make NJBS happen and flow smoothly for participants!

We are excited for NJBS to be traveling to Hutchison, Kansas, on July 1-7, 2018. Following tradition, the 2018 location and theme was announced at this year’s NJBS, and for the first time ever – NJBS accommodations complete with established room blocks ready for reservations from participants was also revealed! Planning has already begun to build upon the excitement and momentum of this year’s success. The IJBBA Board of Directors is excited about the opportunity to travel to a state that NJBS has not been to in 28 years when it was held in Wichita, Kansas, in 1990. 2018 will also be special because NJBS will be held in its sixth

state in six years, something that has not been done in a long time and something that provides a unique opportunity for NJBS to continue to grow by hopefully bringing NJBS close enough to new and young exhibitors that they attend and get hooked on the “Brangus Family Reunion!”

Ideas for future locations is something that the IJBBA Board of Directors and IJBBA Advisors are always seeking input on. If you know or have a facility that might work for a future NJBS, please talk to a board member, an advisor or Tyler, so that we can investigate and research it. Additionally, any ideas for improving any aspect of NJBS are always welcome. IJBBA strives for NJBS to be everything to everyone and all ideas are thoroughly welcomed and considered!

IJBBA will be actively working to increase its communication efforts in the coming year through its Facebook page and its website – junior. gobrangus.com. We encourage you to like our page and contact us with any questions, comments or concerns!

With the start of 2018, while they are busy planning and organizing the NJBS, directors will be back on the road to not only represent the breed, but also to learn and grow as young leaders. They will be participating in the 2018 World Brangus Congress (WBC) as well as the Youth Beef Industry Congress (YBIC).

IJBBA is excited to participate in the 2018 WBC! IJBBA is already working hard to share with the world how the junior association works and more importantly the many benefits of the junior organization!

From building public speaking abilities and confidence in our youngest members to offering the opportunity to travel the country representing the breed and planning an event with a $60,000 budget, IJBBA is proud of the life lessons that are offered to members.

The IJBBA Board of Directors will again be representing the Brangus breed at the YBIC in April 2018. YBIC brings together the youth leaders of the major breed associations to learn about the beef industry. More importantly YBIC provides our youth the opportunity to network with and exchange ideas with their peers from other associations. Each association present benefits greatly from the opportunity to get together and exchange ideas and theories. Many of these ideas are brought back by our directors and incorporated into the way IJBBA does things or what IJBBA offers its members. It is truly a remarkable event and opportunity for youth in the beef industry!

As you can tell, IJBBA is sitting in a very solid position. Financial stability, incredible support from breeders and solid leadership are all adding up to the IJBBA being able to do more and offer more than ever before. We hope you enjoy this issue of JUNIOR brangus and learning about what all IJBBA is doing!

s IJBBA celebrates its 40th Anniversary, we thought it Organizational Leadership would be fun to take a trip back in time and look at how far The early IJBBA Boards were comprised of 6 officers and 9 area IJBBA has come. From before the very first founding meeting to the present day, IJBBA is blessed with an overwhelming outpouring of support from breeders who believe the junior members are the future of the association. IBBA President, W.B. McCombs believed in the future when he instructed Jerry Baker, Paige, Texas; Bill Morris, Kidder, Missouri; Jim Cawley, Eldorado, Texas; Bernard Flusche, Muskogee, Oklahoma; Jim Thomas, Gilbert, Arizona; Harold Brumley, Austin Texas; Gloria Wynn, Geneva, Alabama; and Bobby Scroggins, Thorndale, Texas, to serve as advisors in the formative stages of the organization.

That belief is still carried today by past IJBBA member and current 2017 IBBA President, Brandon Belt, and the current IJBBA Advisory Committee who spend countless hours working with the Board of Directors to move the association forward. Volunteers and supporters continue to make IJBBA what it is today and that does not show any signs of slowing down.

National Junior Brangus Show

Various junior shows sponsored by regional organizations used the title of “International,” but the first official NJBS under the direction of IJBBA was held in 1982 in Moberly, Missouri, and drew 25 entries. In its early years, NJBS relied heavily upon a host ranch or state to provide everything from funding, site selection and planning to meals, hotels, stall bedding and exhibitor gifts.

Today, NJBS is the annual marquee event of the IJBBA. It is one of the largest gatherings of Brangus breeders in the nation and often referred to as the “Brangus Family Reunion.”

Complete funding and execution is no longer the responsibility of a host ranch or state, as the IJBBA accomplishes those tasks with the support of numerous sponsors and volunteers. Numerous state groups still jump in to join planning efforts, but the NJBS is a TRUE National Show!

A Look Back The International Brangus Queen

IJBBA named its first queen in 1978. Gaye Burgin of Oktaha, Oklahoma won the title as five girls from across the country vied for the honor.

Being the International Brangus Queen has transitioned into a large job with the IJBBA. The Queen not only travels to all four IBBA National Point Shows, but she also serves on the IJBBA Board of Directors, working with them to plan and execute the annual NJBS. IJBBA crowned its 40th International Brangus Queen on Friday, July 28!

IJBBA Legacy Leadership Conference

Leadership and developing future Brangus breeders has always been at the forefront of the IJBBA. Throughout the years IJBBA Boards participated in leadership activities when they met; however, IJBBA’s Leadership efforts culminated on September 2-3, 2000, when the IJBBA hosted its first IJBBA Junior Leadership Workshop in San Antonio, Texas. Active members from eight states met over Labor Day weekend to participate in the event conducted by the IJBBA Board of Directors.

Changes within the association put a delay on a follow up conference until 2015, when IJBBA hosted one of the most successful, 10  JUNIOR brangus

most engaging conferences in the nation - the Inaugural IJBBA Legacy Leadership Conference. Over 100 juniors from 8 states attended the conference to learn more about the Brangus breed and the cattle industry. What makes the IJBBA Legacy Leadership Conference so unique is that it is open to any junior interested in participating - regardless of whether or not they are an IJBBA member. With its second conference in April 2017, IJBBA is poised to make an impact not only on our junior membership, but the cattle industry as a whole.

A Look Back IJBBA Today and in the Future

A lot has changed in 40 years. 2004 brought one of the largest changes ever as IJBBA was forced to become financially selfsufficient. Led by Advisory Committee Chairman Randy Deshotel, Ville Platte, Louisiana, and a determined group of advisors, the IJBBA Board of Directors made that happen with the support of Brangus breeders.

Today, IJBBA is over 450 members strong and experiencing a boom in participation. NJBS 2017 had the largest number of not only exhibitors but also entries in over 15 years. Additionally, even with hosting new events and sending board members to more events, IJBBA is in the most solid financial position it has ever experienced. Breeders and businesses continue to help raise record levels of funds to keep the IJBBA Board of Directors traveling to represent the breed, hosting the NJBS, hosting the Legacy Leadership Conference, attending industry events and building the future of the breed!

Regional Update

I

t is no secret that the International Junior Brangus Association has experienced tremendous growth over the past several years and this trend seems to be going nowhere but up! As you read through this issue, you will see that participation at this year’s National Junior Brangus Show was as high as it has been in 15 years and the second IJBBA Legacy Leadership Conference hosted numerous nonBrangus juniors who are now becoming involved in the breed. Amazing strides are being made on a national level to bring in new members and keep them coming for the length of their junior careers, but the IJBBA cannot solely take the credit for these accomplishments. Dedicated individuals from across the country are devoting time and energy into growing junior Brangus programs on a local level. We wanted to take the time to highlight these efforts and encourage everyone to take part in helping to build the future of our breed!

Louisiana Junior Brangus Association is looking forward to the future with plans to reenergize their membership by rebuilding their own summer state show starting May 2018. With a tremendous support system behind them, we have no doubt that their future looks bright!

IJBBA Advisor and Louisiana Brangus Breeder, Bob Savoie stated, “the [Louisiana] juniors are a great group of kids who really enjoy showing and having a good time wherever they go!”

Midwest

Kansas and Missouri are areas anticipating growth over the next few years. Kansas introduced two new juniors to the National Junior Brangus Show this year and a whole new generation is on the cusp of entering their junior show eligibility. A

few years ago the IJBBA Board of Directors had an opportunity.

They had experienced unprecedented financial support from the amazing breeders of Brangus cattle and were for the first time in many years, looking at a budget surplus. Seizing that opportunity, they immediately wanted to do something that would impact the entire breed. Something that would bring in more members, educate them, and send them out into the world with a passion for the beef industry and for Brangus cattle. They wanted to “Leave a Legacy” and so the IJBBA Legacy Leadership Conference was born. The first conference was held in 2015 in College Station, Texas and was such a huge success that juniors were asking before they even left “when and where is the next conference?”! So before their bags were even unpacked, the IJBBA Board and Advisors along with an amazing team of Floridia Brangus breeders began planning the next conference.

Legacy leadership conference This past April, 90 juniors and chaperones from seven states across the nation traveled to Haines City, Florida, to the Florida FFA Leadership Training Center for four days of learning about the beef industry while having a little fun. IJBBA chartered a bus that left Kansas on Wednesday, April 5, 2017, stopped to pick up attendees along the route and, after a trip that lasted over 24 hours, arrived at the FFA Leadership Training Center! While weary from travel, everyone was ready to get started and get engaged. At registration they were greeted with IJBBA bags, IJBBA notepads and pens, IJBBA posters, conference t-shirts, name tags, schedules, thank you lists, promotional items from ranches they would be touring and promotional items from conference sponsors.

Dinner sponsored by the Southeast Brangus Breeders Association, Greuel Family Brangus and Everglades Farm Equipment was the first order of business as the conference officially started at 6:00 pm on Thursday, April 6. The IJBBA Board of Directors and Laura Lee Taylor welcomed participants to the conference. A favorite from the Inaugural Legacy Leadership Conference, Eddie Slowikowski, returned as the evening’s keynote speaker. A former Olympic runner and with two decades as a Professional Speaker and Empowerment Strategist, Slowikowski brought hours of immeasurable involvement and excitement to the group!

Participants listened as Slowikowski shared his story and what it takes to achieve success. Numerous activities led by Slowikowski pointed out the hard fact that there is no one route to or measure of success. Success is different to each and every person. Participants experienced teamwork activities like never before that had them on their feet and cheering on teammates who, just hours before, were complete strangers.

Slowikowski had groups thinking as one, singing their hearts out, dancing like crazy and working together in fast-paced, action packed activities that required 100% of team (continued on page 20)

legacy leadership conference (continued from page 19) participation to succeed! Thursday night came to a close with a positive charge hanging in the air. Special thanks go to the Southeast Regional Junior Brangus Show for sponsoring the evening!

6:45 am came very early Friday morning and participants grabbed breakfast, sponsored by Economy Termite and Pest Control and Florida Natural Growers, before loading the buses for a drive to Deseret Ranches in St. Cloud, Florida. Deseret Ranches is the largest cow/calf operation in North America and being able to tour an operation of this scope and size was a truly unique opportunity for all participants. Participants were shown through a couple of the beef units on the ranch, visited a set of brand new working pens and were introduced to some of the citrus operations.

Another bus ride took participants into downtown Kissimmee, Florida, and the Florida Cattlemen’s Association Headquarters. Fresh off the grill, juicy steaks awaited participants thanks to the Florida Cattlemen’s Association, Merck, and Boehringer-Ingleheim. While everyone enjoyed their delicious steak, Dusty Holly, Field Services Director for the Florida Cattlemen’s Association, spoke about his role within the association, the Florida beef industry and several legislative issues affecting Florida cattle producers.

From the Cattlemen’s Association, participants moved to the Osceola County Extension Office for a presentation on reproduction. Joe Walter and Dr. Jim Griffen led the presentation which covered everything from cattle handling to semen quality along with the basics of artificial insemination.

During a break in the presentation, conference participant Elijah Lasseter demonstrated the art of whip cracking that the Florida Cracker Cowboys are so well known for. After the demo, participants grabbed some snacks sponsored by Bayer Animal Health, before heading back to finish up the reproduction presentation. What participants did not know was that 10 female reproductive tracts were in the next room for the wet lab that followed the presentation. In what many claimed to be the most exciting and interesting aspect of the conference, participants were able to glove up and “practice” artificially inseminating the tracts. Several volunteers experienced in AI showed the tract anatomy to participants and guided them through what they were feeling and doing. Additionally, participants were able to see various stages of pregnancy in the tracts on display, from as small as about a 30 day pregnancy to some fetuses that were quite developed and already in the second trimester!

Genetic Resources spoke as the evening’s keynote speaker. Conley has a long history with the Brangus breed, growing up showing Brangus and managing some of the most prestigious Brangus ranches in Georgia. He spoke about the many experiences he has gained through his work, some of the prominent bulls and females that he has worked with during his

career and encouraged participants to continue to pursue their love of agriculture and the beef industry. The evening concluded with a bonfire, s’mores, and volleyball under the stars sponsored by Southern States Cooperatives! (continued on page 22)

legacy leadership conference (continued from page 21) Saturday morning started even earlier for participants as they loaded the buses at 6:00 am to head to “Cow Town” – Okeechobee, Florida. Taylormade Land and Cattle along with Florida Natural Growers provided breakfast as participants boarded the buses.

After two hours on the road, the charter buses arrived at one of the most scenic settings ever experienced – the Williamson Cattle Company Hunting Camp. Nestled in a grove of nostalgic trees complete with Spanish moss, the setting alone made getting up early completely worth it! Participants broke into two groups with Group A being herded into a 32 foot gooseneck trailer lined with hay bales for a tour around the ranch with John Williamson while Group B relaxed in the shade of the pole barn and listened to a presentation on nutrition and fetal programming from Dr. Matt Hersom, Associate Professor and Extension Beef Cattle Specialist for the University

of Florida. Each lasted about 90 minutes and the groups switched places.

Before loading the buses to move on, a lot of group pictures were taken in the impressive scenery and a wonderful bar-b-que lunch was served by Williamson Cattle Company.

Syfrett Feed Company and Syfrett Ranch were the next two stops for the day. At the feed company, participants experienced every aspect of the company, from commodity deliveries to sacked feed headed out the door.

Walking through the ingredient room, many participants were impressed by the number of things that go into making a complete ration. At the ranch, participants rode through the ranch learning about the program and the strategies they employ. A unique aspect about the ranch is its location next to the Kissimmee River from which the ranch has unlimited access to the water.

Having the access along with a system of pumps and canals the ranch is able to irrigate any and all pastures as needed thus maintaining grass growth and removing the burden of drought that plagues so many ranchers.

Another bus ride brought participants to the Seminole Tribe of Florida

legacy leadership conference Headquarters in Brighton, Florida, where Alex Johns, Natural Resources Manager for the Seminole Tribe of Florida, welcomed participants and explained the history of the tribe. Participants thoroughly enjoyed learning about the tribe and its customs, operations and plans for the future.

Participants were treated to a Seminole Pride Beef burger and fixings for dinner and a quick tour around the ranch to see cattle and absorb more information about the operation of the ranches.

As the sun was setting, participants were on a long ride back to the FFA Leadership Training Center. One would think there would be a lot of quiet kids after such a long day; however, the IJBBA Board of Directors took this time to quiz participants on the activities of the past few days! It was definitely an exciting ride back as participants competed to answer the questions in exchange for chances at door prizes to be awarded at the end of the conference.

Snacks sponsored by Walpole Feed and Supply and some free time wrapped up Saturday’s activities and most participants were in bed as early as possible!

The final day began with breakfast sponsored by Neogen GeneSeek

and Purina. Current IBBA member, past IJBBA member, past National FFA Secretary and former Domestic Policy Intern at the White House, Victoria Maloch was the closing session speaker. Participants were engaged and enthralled as Maloch led an interactive session to sum up the conference.

After Maloch closed her session, a table full of door prizes from numerous sponsors and businesses was given away to lucky winners before they packed bags and loaded to return home, many of them facing a 24 plus hour bus ride back to Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas!

The IJBBA Legacy Leadership Conference is a biennial event with the next conference being held during the Spring of 2019. So Much More Than A Cattle Show!

R

ecently, someone commented to me, “Oh, you went to a cattle show for almost week in the middle of the summer?

This was part of your annual vacation? WHY, would you do THAT?” Well, for me it is a very simple answer. The National Junior Brangus Show (NJBS), just like many other breed’s junior national events, it is so much more than just a cattle show!

Today at 46 years old, I can recall some thirty plus summer junior national cattle events that I have attended since I was nine. Many breeds.

Many states. For me, every single one has been more than a cattle show.

First, there is no anticipation like the trip to a national junior show. It does not matter if it is 100 miles or 1000 miles to get there. It does not matter if you travel in a crowded pick-up truck or on a plane, it is just a different kind of anticipation. The closer you get to the fairgrounds, the more the excitement grows! Perhaps it is getting to see friends that we have not seen in 360 days. Or for a young exhibitor, maybe it is knowing that there have been at least 1000 heifer set ups in those 360 days all done with the hope of moving up in the showmanship placings simply because fifth place in junior showmanship was not good enough last year! For some of us long ago IJBBA members, it may have been wondering what Buddy Henley’s hat would be like this year. Even today after hearing it so many times we can probably recite it, we still anticipate the story of the Frog and the Churn, with the wonder of who will be the deserving recipient!

Speaking of not seeing someone for 360 days, I can easily say that each of my best friends have been met at a cattle show. The common topic of a breed, cattle in general and shared passions have kept many friendships alive that started at summer junior national shows.

What about family? It is always fun to think about the families met across the years and miles. I bet many of you haul to the junior national each year with the same family. You have watched each other’s kids grow up and likely were a

by: Cheramie Viator, 89-90 IJBBA President surrogate parent at some traumatic moment that didn’t include blood or bones but required a Snoopy band aide. I can truly say that a lot of my “family” lives hundreds or thousands of miles away and our annual family reunion is held at some breed junior national show.

The life and career skills gained in contests such as speech, salesmanship, team fitting, skill-a-thon, quiz bowl, livestock judging, showmanship and even the costume contest all have value that can’t be measured. For the shy nine-year-old that cried before going into the contest room to give a speech (actually it was shakily read from index cards), the speech contest is a first step to gaining confidence. That same nine-year-old later became president of the IJBBA and stood proudly in front of the membership and spoke about his desire to be a leader in the beef industry.

The salesmanship contest challenges each participant to learn about EPDs, genetics and marketing. Each participant must have poise and professionalism to present their product. It is very likely those same skills will one day be used in their career as a pharmaceutical salesman, college professor or marketing expert.

In team fitting, learning how to recognize the need for a balance of “doing versus teaching” is always a key component of success. Participants have to plan, be organized, communicate with one another and present an end product in this contest. Well, as an adult, have you ever had a project at work where you had to plan, organize, communicate and present an end product? Yes, many of us do exactly this every day in our careers.

My very first team fitting contest was at the 1987 NJBS at Granada Ranch in Wheelock, Texas. My team fitting partner was a cute little blond haired kid that had “speed beads” hanging from the side of his red ropers.

He was so little that he stood on a bucket to spray tail adhesive as he attempted to pull the heifer’s tail head. I don’t think we won the team fitting contest that day. However, I do know that day started a long lasting friendship that still exists today. That young man, Cody Sankey, is now the Sire Procurement Manager for Genex. I would venture to guess that Cody would agree that his “learnings” in this and many more junior national contests have contributed to his successful career.

We all know that winning in showmanship starts at home and it takes practice and more practice. This tenacity is the building block for so much in our adult lives. Showmanship teaches kids about responsibility, commitment, passion, practice and even communication. Showmanship is about so much more than just the final placings and the buckle that goes to the champion.

In closing, I hope the next time someone asks you, “Why would you go to a cattle show in the middle of the summer and give up vacation days to do it?”… you will answer, “It’s not a cattle show, it’s a life training event.”

2017 NJBS Week In Pictures

T

he 36th annual National Junior Brangus Show (NJBS) brought 150 exhibitors and their families from 10 states across the nation to Texarkana, Arkansas for a week filled with fun and Brangus fellowship. This was the first time NJBS has been to Arkansas since 1991! From radio station and newspaper coverage of the event to local restaurants providing special rates for catering, the community of Texarkana really embraced and welcomed the juniors with overwhelming support and hospitality. Local Brangus breeders also played a huge role in welcoming everyone to Texarkana as they worked tirelessly ahead of the event and behind the scenes to make things happen and help find anything needed.

Unprecedented participation was experienced again this year throughout all contests and across all ages. However, the junior division continues to grow rapidly. That is not surprising with the average age 28 ď ś JUNIOR brangus

of 2017 NJBS participants being 13 – a clear sign that the future of the IJBBA is looking very bright.

Additionally, NJBS welcomed 49 new, first time exhibitors to the event, another great sign of the future ahead! The Junior Board, Advisors, and many volunteers worked tirelessly to pull off this event and to ensure that a good time was had by all in attendance.

Monday

Monday of NJBS is always one of the busiest days for everyone! After a long day of traveling and setting up stalls on Sunday, the International Brangus Queen, Allyson Polston, kicked off the week Monday morning by hosting a welcome breakfast to get everyone ready for the week ahead followed by Cattle Check-in. During an exceptional catered

lunch, IJBBA Advisor Traci Middleton presented the first ever NJBS Lunch and Learn, discussing the IBBA’s data sheet, EPDs and how to read and understand them. Opening Ceremonies began the afternoon festivities with the Parade of States and the introduction of the IJBBA Board of Directors. Exhibitors then moved across the fairgrounds for orientation, where all new exhibitors were introduced along with board and queen candidates, followed by ice breakers led by the IJBBA Board of Directors.

After signing up for their various contests, exhibitors and parents alike hurried back to their hotels to change into their swimsuits as NJBS hit the Beaches at Holiday Spring Water Park! Complete with a pass to all water park attractions and a meal ticket, IJBBA covered costs for all exhibitors to attend the park. The afternoon and evening were full of fun as NJBS exhibitors rode the waves and zipped down the slides.

Tuesday

Tuesday at NJBS is CONTEST DAY! Speeches, Salesmanship and Team Fitting are all held on Tuesday. Each of these contests is not only fun and enjoyable but they are also designed to build powerful character attributes in our junior members. Each of these contests works to build speaking abilities, leadership, confidence, and teamwork! Tuesday proved again to be the most jam packed day of the week with all contests beating last year’s record levels to have the most participation seen in recent history. A special thanks goes to Roger and Janet Greuel for being the presenting sponsor of the Speech Contest and to Supreme Show Supply for being the presenting sponsor of the Team Fitting and Showing Contest.

NJBS Week In Pictures (continued from page 29) Committee visited the station of 101.7 HOT FM, hot hit country music, to visit with DJ Dawn Parker about NJBS and all the activities going on at the Four States Fairgrounds while IJBBA was there. Past IJBBA Director and International Brangus Queen Emily (Jackson) Lochner, brought a wonderful presentation on livestock selection to participants during Tuesday’s Lunch and Learn, while Weaver Leather Livestock put on an impressive demonstration of products, daily care and showmanship pointers.

Tuesday ends with two of the most popular events of NJBS - Taste of States and Barnyard Olympics! Participants enjoyed cuisine from across the nation followed by the favorite, Barnyard Olympics. Young and old participated in this year’s games which included a LOT of mud and fun!

Wednesday

Wednesday brings the first cattle show of NJBS - the Champions Challenge, followed by the Bred & Owned Show, followed by the Owned Ultra Females! Judge Cody Green evaluated the entries this year and the show wrapped up just in time for Wednesday’s Lunch and Learn presented by NJBS sponsor, Brandon Boughen with Bio S.I. Technology, LLC. However, the day did not end there as the Skill-A-Thon contest, the IBA Scholarship Workshop and Brangus Jeopardy were all fit into Wednesday afternoon!

New this year was a Fiesta at Red Bud Farms. Special thanks to the Walker family for hosting NJBS participants at this inaugural Wednesday evening event. If you missed it you really missed out - the food was exceptional, the views even better and the hayride and cattle the best!

Thursday

The marquee event for the NJBS happens Thursday - the NJBS Owned Shows.

After a rocky start, the day turned into one of the neatest in NJBS history as two amazing cattlewomen, Traci Middleton and Jennifer Parker, evaluated almost 200 junior entries!

Thursday afternoon brought the NJBS Judging Contest with cattle provided by Wednesday’s hosts, Red Bud Farms. The annual “Source of Champions” Sale rounded out the day with over $30,000 being raised for the NJBS and future IJBBA activities!

Friday

Junior activities conclude on Friday but the day is far from an easy one. The future of the junior association is front and center to start the day - the PeeWee Showmanship! 13 PeeWee’s in the age range of 3-6 as of January 1, 2017, competed this year! IJBBA can’t wait for these guys to be involved in everything!

The Showmanship contests for novice, junior, intermediate and seniors followed the PeeWee’s with two ages running consecutively in a two ring format. Judges Shawn Fletcher and Ardy Tiner definitely had a lot of tough decisions to make throughout the day. Showmanship was followed by the costume contest and the day concluded with the IJBBA General Membership Meeting, Banquet and Awards Ceremony.

n Wednesday, July 26, 2017, at the Four States Fairgrounds, in Texarkana, Arkansas, Judge Cody Green, of Prairie Grove, Arkansas, evaluated the Champion’s Challenge, the NJBS Bred and Owned Show, and the NJBS Owned Ultra Female Show.

Green is the Show and Sale Cattle Manager at Willow Springs Cattle Company, a 750 head commercial cow calf operation that utilizes 300 head of commercial females as recipients in a very extensive embryo transfer program.

Green attended junior college at Connors State College and was on the Reserve National Champion team. From there, he continued his education and judging career at the University of Arkansas where he was Reserve High Individual at Denver, Kansas City and Fort Worth. Green has judged the National Western, Kansas Beef Expo, Iowa Beef Expo and numerous state fairs and expos in 31 states and Canada.

Throughout his judging he has obtained two of the most influential things in his life. First is his wife, Lindsay Green, who he met judging in college. Secondly, is his job which combines working with quality cattle and using them to teach kids from around the world the value of hard work and dedication in the show ring and in life. Throughout the day, he evaluated two Champion’s Challenge entries, 44 Bred and Owned female entries, 26 Bred and Owned bull entries, 9 Owned Ultra female entries, and one Ultra cow-calf pair entry.

The NJBS Champion’s Challenge Show is a unique opportunity for exhibitors who purchase animals in the “Source of Champions” Sale to bring their purchases back to NJBS the following year to compete for added premiums! Consigners put up $100 per heifer for the SOC sale nomination, and that money goes into the pot for the Challenge Show. Five heifers were sold in the 2016 sale, and $500 was up for grabs.

The IJBBA “Source of Champions” Sale, is held in conjunction with the NJBS and

features 10-15 show quality heifers and bulls along with proven show champion embryos and breed leading semen.

Consignments are due each year on May 1 so watch the IJBBA Facebook page for consignment information as well as animal information as it becomes available.

The NJBS Bred & Owned show on Wednesday truly showcases what the junior association is about - building the future of the breed. Lots of time, energy and devotion is put into having a Bred & Owned animal as juniors must own the dam at the time she conceives, maintain ownership through her pregnancy and then own the calf (show animal) from day one until the show! It is a huge commitment and we are excited for these juniors who exhibited the champions at the 2017 NJBS Bred & Owned Show!

The Owned Ultra show was held on Wednesday at the end of the Bred & Owned shows. This is the second year of Ultra being shown at NJBS and the show is currently only for Ultra females in one combined show with red and blacks competing head to head. This show is small but is steadily growing and IJBBA looks forward to exciting things with the growth of the Ultra shows.

To commerate our 40th Anniversary, the IJBBA is excited about the opportunity to offer eleven prints of “Brangus: A Cattlemen’s Legacy” by Robert Butler. Mr. Butler is well known throughout the Brangus breed for his painting “Born Brangus.”

This painting was given to Laura Lee Taylor by Mr. Butler and has been in her personal collection since 2001. This will be the first time that prints have ever been offered for purchase. We are extremely grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Taylor for this unique fundraising opportunity for IJBBA! Futhermore, Mr. Tom Hayford has graciously hand built frames for each of the prints IJBBA will be offering.

Each frame will bear a custom IJBBA plaque celebrating 40 years of the IJBBA. The IJBBA Board is offering ten framed 12”x24” prints and one 24”x48” framed print at various ranch sales and Brangus events over the course of the next year. 2017 NJBS Owned Shows

T

his year’s Annual National Junior Brangus Show (NJBS) brought 150 junior Brangus exhibitors from ten states, the most juniors in over 15 years to participate in NJBS! Junior Brangus exhibitors traveled up to 1000 miles one-way to Texarkana, Arkansas. In total, exhibitors brought 196 entries before Judges Traci Middleton, of Puryear, Tenneessee, and Jennifer Parker of Sachse, Texas, for evaluation.

Middleton and Parker were not scheduled to judge the event; however, an unexpected situation resulted in a unique and remarkable day unfolding in Texarkana. As NJBS participant parent and long-time Brangus exhibitor Robert Baker remarked, “these two ladies woke up this morning thinking about taking pictures and getting open show cattle ready for Saturday, little did they know they would be judging a national owned show! They both did a great job, working together and picking cattle that fit today’s cattleman.”

She has raised and exhibited numerous regional and national champions, including the Grand Champion Bull at the 2016 International Brangus Show in Houston, Texas. Additionally, this year their senior herdsire was named the IBBA Show Sire of the Year.

NJBS Owned SHowS Middleton was actively involved in the International Junior Brangus Breeders Association, serving as President of the organization in 2003, and continues to be active in the International Brangus Breeders Association, serving as President of the association in 2014 and continues to serve on the IJBBA Advisory Committee. She attended college at Middle Tennessee State University and Murray State University, graduating with honors in 2006 with a B.S. in Animal Science/Pre-Veterinary Medicine and a minor in Business Administration. During college, she was a member of the 200405 livestock judging team.

Post-graduation, she returned home to work in her 4th generation family business, Middleton Lumber Company, LLC. This arrangement has allowed her to have the best of both worlds, focus on her passion for the beef industry and prepare to carry on the traditions of their family

business. She has judged numerous shows at a local, regional and national level across the country, and has evaluated many different breeds of cattle, but especially enjoys sorting showmanship and working with youth.

Parker is most well known throughout the Brangus breed for being the official show photographer of the National Junior Brangus Show and Futurity for the past seven years. Together with her husband Mark, they have operated Parker Photography since 1987, photographing county, state and national livestock shows across the country.

However, as many found out on Thursday during the NJBS Owned Shows, Parker is as comfortable picking and talking the champions as she is at getting them set at the backdrop!

Parker grew up in the Brahman breed and continues to be actively involved in her family’s registered Brahman operation, Collin’s Brahman Ranch in Chilton, Texas. As owner and herdsman, Parker is actively involved in all ranch operations and oversees about eighty head of registered Brahman cattle and forty head of club calf cows. To date, they have raised five open National and International Brahman Champions. Additionally, they have produced numerous champions at state and national junior Brahman shows.

A 1991 graduate of Texas A&M University, Parker received her Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science. Since that time, she has judged county, state and national livestock shows across the United States, evaluating showmanship contests, bred and owned shows, owned shows, steer shows and open shows.

Parker definitely brought a wealth of judging experience with her but more importantly she brought with her an incredibly deep love of junior exhibitors and junior cattle shows as she evaluated the 2017 NJBS Owned Show.

NJBS contests

he National Junior Brangus Show (NJBS) brings junior exhibitors and their families from across the nation, and provides opportunities to not only exhibit animals, but to also build critical life skills such as public speaking, critical thinking, teamwork and character development. Contests range from Livestock Judging, Public Speaking, Photography, Team Fitting and Brangus Jeopardy to Showmanship, Computer Advertisements and Illustrations. Each of these contests is designed to develop and encourage a skill set that will be beneficial to IJBBA members for years to come.

Through the generosity of Brangus breeders and sponsors, NJBS awards over $35,000 annually in cash and prizes to the hardworking junior exhibitors. Several sponsors have gone above and beyond and completely sponsor an entire contest or provide a large incentive for exhibitors to participate in a specific contest and NJBS recognizes them by naming the contest for their contributions. This year NJBS had the Roger and Janet Greuel Speech Contest, the Weaver Leather Livestock Demonstration Clinic, the Supreme Show Supply Team Fitting and Showing Contest and the Bio S.I. Technology, LLC Showmanship Contest. The IJBBA Board of Directors and all NJBS participants are extremely grateful to all breeders, ranches and businesses who help make NJBS possible!

Juniors are recognized for their contest awards on Friday evening during the NJBS Awards Banquet. While all exhibitors are required to participate in a minimum of three contests at NJBS, numerous participants choose to go above and beyond and are recognized for their efforts by being named a High Point Exhibitor. These awards are given in four divisions: New (first time NJBS exhibitor), Junior, Intermediate and Senior. Winning one of these divisions requires exhibitors to really participate in everything NJBS offers!

GEORGANNE MYERS AWARD

Georganne Myers Award Presented to Brangus Legend

T

he Georganne Myers National Supporter of the Year Award is given annually to individuals who go above and beyond in their support of the IJBBA. This award, given in memory of Georganne Myers, is a representation of the passion and devotion that is still very evident in the people involved in the Brangus breed. Georganne raised two daughters who both were actively involved in the Brangus breed, Rachel Myers Childs and Britne Myers. She lived in Liberty, Texas, and passed away after being diagnosed with brain cancer.

A deserving recipient is selected annually by a committee based on the tremendous support shown for the junior members involved in the Brangus breed and contributions made to ensure the success of the IJBBA. This year’s recipient exemplifies the spirit of Georganne in his unwavering passion for the youth of our breed, giving over 40 years of support to the IJBBA. The 2017 Georganne Myers National Supporter of the Year Award was presented to Myron Saathoff of Hondo, Texas, on Friday, July 28, 2017 at the IJBBA Membership Meeting and Awards Banquet held in conjunction with the National Junior Brangus Show in Texarkana, Arkansas. Past recipient of the award and former IJBBA Advisor, Randy Deshotel, made the presentation.

Saathoff is no stranger to Brangus and has dedicated the past 45 years of his life to raising and exhibiting some of the very best the breed has to offer.

Working for several operations over the years allowed him to be involved with some of the most instrumental foundation animals in the Brangus breed.

For the past 18 years, Saathoff has managed JLS International near Devine, Texas, where he has experienced tremendous success in the show ring not only with cattle but also as a Herdsman. With his being named the 2016 IBBA Red Brangus Herdsman, he became the only man to have three IBBA Herdsman Awards and the only man to win in both color divisions.

With such experience and success, Saathoff is relied upon by many for his guidance in all things show related. He serves on both the IBBA Show Committee and the IJBBA Advisory Committee and has done so for numerous terms

Some of Saathoff’s passion for the show ring can be explained by his involvement showing heifers and steers through FFA while in high school in Hondo, Texas. However, much of his passion for the youth of the Brangus breed comes from having raised his own kids in the association.

The Saathoff family was a staple of the NJBS for numerous years and Saathoff’s son and daughter accumulated many honors and titles throughout the years, but Saathoff is most proud of the lessons they learned while participating in the NJBS and other IJBBA activities. Saathoff is looking forward to days when his third generation will reach the show ring. Currently, he has seven grandchildren and is excited for the day he can help them get their Brangus heifers into the show ring!

Since its inception in 2002, Saathoff has been a staunch supporter of the IJBBA “Source of Champions” Sale and has consigned countless heifers from JLS International as well as his personal herd of cattle. Additionally, he is always one of the first and most consistent breeders to donate semen to the auction as well as always helps other lots bring valuable amounts for the benefit of IJBBA. Saathoff and JLS International did not hesitate to donate the 2017 IJBBA Legacy Female, Miss JLS Classy 915D44. They truly understand that the membership of the IJBBA is the future of the breed and they are so willing to support that future that their decision to donate the 2017 Legacy Female was made and confirmed on the very first call from IJBBA Directors.

IJBBA Director of Youth Activities, Tyler Dean recalls, “During my time on the IJBBA Board of Directors the idea behind the Legacy Female Buyer Group got its start. In 2004, Camp Cooley donated then IJBBA Foundation Female. A group of breeders went together and purchased the heifer for a record amount at that point in time, and donated her to be given away to an NJBS exhibitor. Myron was part of the group that teamed up to buy the heifer and give her to an exhibitor. This act by Myron and other breeders established the idea behind today’s Buyer Group that has consistently raised record amounts of funds for the numerous activities of the IJBBA.” “Myron is the type of man that doesn’t always express himself, but anyone who knows him, knows that he is always there for anything the kids need,” said IJBBA Advisor Bob Savoie. “He has also had tremendous success himself and is always willing to share his knowledge with others.”

When asked what this award meant to him, Saathoff replied, “The Saathoff family goes back a long way with the Myers and Rays. I have been a longtime friend of Georganne’s brother, Woody, and we have many great memories of showing with Georganne and her family. To receive the Georganne Myers award for dedication to the youth of our breed was a great honor! I have always believed in our Brangus breed, and I believe that in order for our breed to continue and prosper depends on our Brangus Juniors.”

IJBBA Board of Directors Announced

T

he International Junior Brangus Board of Directors for 20172018 was announced at the conclusion of the National Junior Brangus Show Banquet on Friday, July 28, 2017. Director candidates must submit a lengthy written application, essay and letters of reference before arriving at the National Junior Brangus Show (NJBS). Once they arrive at NJBS, each candidate is interviewed by a Selection Committee consisting of the IJBBA Executive Committee as well as the IJBBA Advisory Committee. However, the week does not get easier after their interview as candidates’ leadership qualities and work ethics are evaluated by the Selection Committee during the entire week of NJBS. All the hard work and time devoted to applying for the IJBBA Board of Directors culminates at the banquet where the new Directors are announced. The IJBBA Board of Directors is responsible for overseeing and managing the entire IJBBA as well as coordinating and hosting the annual National Junior Brangus Show and the biennial Legacy Leadership Conference. The 2017-2018 IJBBA Board of Directors consists of:

President, Allyson Polston, Lakeland, Florida After three years serving as an IJBBA Director and one year serving as the IBBA Queen, Allyson Polston was selected as the 2017-2018 IJBBA President. Heading into her fifth year of service, 21 year-old Polston has already held officer positions, including Vice President and Secretary, and has played a huge role in the coordination of the board. Polston has been a driving factor in the resurgence of Florida’s NJBS representation by encouraging more Floridians to attend. With a solid resume of achievements and leadership with Brangus cattle and in other agricultural and community organizations, Polston is eager to help build a bridge between NJBS and regional associations to hopefully increase participation at both levels. Polston received her Associates degree from Hillsborough Community College in 2016 and is currently a junior at the University of Florida majoring in Agricultural Education, Communications and Leadership Development.

IJBBA Leadership Ex-Officio, McKenzie Posey, Wayne, Oklahoma This NJBS marked the end of McKenzie Posey’s term as IJBBA President. After two years serving as an IJBBA Director, one year as the International Brangus Queen and one year as President, Posey will transition into more of an advisory role helping the new President and board continue to grow and achieve goals. No stranger to leadership positions, she served multiple years as President of her FFA Chapter and multiple terms as OJBBA President. Posey’s leadership experience combined with her outgoing and uplifting personality resulted in a highly successful year for IJBBA with her at the helm and will be a huge factor in the coming year. Now in her sophomore year at East Central University, Posey plans to obtain a Finance Degree and continue operating and expanding her family’s registered Brangus operation.

Co-Reporter, Kendra Brull, Atchison, Kansas Following in her older brother’s footsteps, Kendra Brull joined the elite group of IJBBA Directors three years ago. Brull is headed into her junior year at Friends University this fall where she is majoring in Health and Physical Education and minoring in Business Administration.

Brull has been a staple of the NJBS barns since she was old enough to get around and has been actively involved in IJBBA for over 10 years.

Brull also has experience showing numerous other species. She has International Brangus Queen & IJBBA Director, Holli Baker, Burton, Texas With a passion for the beef industry and the Brangus breed, Holli vast amounts of leadership experience serving in multiple capacities Baker will definitely be an asset in her dual position of International through her 4-H tenure. Brull brings level thinking, motivation and Brangus Queen and IJBBA Director. Being born into a Brangus family dedication to the IJBBA Board and as a Co-Reporter, Brull will be combined with her first State and National Junior Brangus Shows being assisting with a renewed effort to increase communication from the eight years ago, Baker brings a wealth of history to her position with board to IJBBA members.

Baker Crowned 2017-2018 International Brangus Queen

She exhibited both the Grand Champion Red Brangus Female and the Reserve Grand Female at the 2016 NJBS. Exhibiting cattle is in her blood and she is excited to keep the family tradition alive.

From involvement in the Texas Junior Brangus Assocation as Sweetheart and Queen, Baker felt applying for the International Junior Board as the International Brangus Queen was the next step in her growth within the breed.

n Thursday, July 28, 2017, the International Junior Brangus Breeders Association (IJBBA) Board of Directors hosted its 16th annual“Source of Champions”(SOC) Sale in conjunction with the National Junior Brangus Show (NJBS). Numerous exhibitors, parents and spectators were in attendance as a jar of Janet Greuel’s famous blackberry jelly, the first IJBBA Legacy Artwork print, a dove hunt, the IJBBA Breeder’s Brand Desk, 7 heifers, 2 bulls, 29 embryos, a semen tank full of semen and 135 straws of semen sold to benefit the IJBBA. Andrew Conley of Blairesville, Georgia, auctioneered this year’s event.

A staple of the SOC Sale since its inception 16 years ago, Janet Greuel’s famous blackberry jelly was the first item auctioned off. Repeat buyer of this lot, Cox Excalibur Brangus of Katy, Texas, was the high bidder and took the jelly home for $250.

In its third year, the IJBBA Breeder’s Brand desk featured numerous Brangus ranches and supporters’ brands and was handmade by IJBBA Advisor Tom Hayford. Tom put a lot of hours into transforming the 100 plus year old dead-head cypress log into the magnificent desk. A Buyer’s Group was organized by Kim Carter and won the bid at $9,300.

Longtime IJBBA supporter, Tommie Rogers of The Branch Ranch, was the name drawn to win the desk from the Buyer’s Group and Tommie elected to donate it back for another auction to raise more money for IJBBA and NJBS! The gavel fell on a bid of $1000 from Carlton and Laura Lee Taylor of Taylormade Land and Cattle, who took the one-of-a-kind piece home to Lakeland, Florida with them. In total with the money raised from ranches putting their brand on the desk, $11,350 was raised for the IJBBA. Pump Jack Cattle Company in Victoria, Texas, donated another dove hunt complete with lodging and a special meal cooked by Bob Savoie to the IJBBA again this year. The hunt for up to 4 people sold to Jeff Smith and Myron Saathoff of JLS International, for a final price of $2,200.

The last item sold to benefit the IJBBA was the first print of the IJBBA Legacy Artwork. The artwork has long been in the personal collection of Laura Lee Taylor and she has given IJBBA the opportunity to sell 11 prints throughout the upcoming year of this amazing piece titled “Brangus: A Cattlemen’s Legacy”. Additionally, Tom Hayford used some of the same dead-head cypress to build custom frames for each of the small prints.

Each frame bears a custom plaque celebrating the 40th Anniversary of IJBBA. Mike Doguet of Doguet’s Diamond D Ranch purchased the framed print for $650.

The sale moved into the live animal lots with each and every prospect selling in the SOC Sale being halter broke and in show condition.

Additionally, each animal that sold is eligible to return to the 2018 NJBS and compete in the Champion’s Challenge Show, a show designed specifically for animals selling in the SOC Sale featuring added prize money. Be sure to look for these animals at the 2018 NJBS in Hutchinson, Kansas.

The evening’s high selling lot was lot 1, CX Ms Payloads Meathouse 71/D5, consigned by Cox Excalibur Brangus of Katy, Texas. Sired by the CX Payloads Meathouse 930/U, the June 8, 2016, born female commanded a final bid price of $6,500 from GKB Cattle of Waxahachie, Texas. The female also went on to win her division in the Brangus Futurity on Saturday!

The second high selling show heifer prospect was lot 6B, Farris Ms Blanda 803 1616D. Born October 12, 2016, this female was consigned by Farris Ranching Company of Tuscola, Texas. Sired by GR Blanda 803U27, this heifer brought a final bid of $5,000 from Jagger Horn of Anson, Texas.

Tied for the third high selling lots were lot 3, Two Hearts Dharma 820D7 and lot 5, Farris Ms Gusto 077D. Dharma, consigned by Two Hearts Brangus of Seguin, Texas, was born September 22, 2016, sired by 2H Move Over 392Z, and brought $3,500 from Maddox Hartmann of Floresville, Texas. Ms Gusto also brought $3,500 and was consigned

by Farris Ranching Company of Tuscola, Texas. The September 28, 2016 female is sired by Suhn’s Augustus 30B6 and was purchased by Kameron Steele of Gainesville, Florida.

A relatively new aspect to the SOC sale is the sale of embryos. Many of the embryos sold have proven championship genetics. Three lots, 10A, 10B and 12, tied for the high selling embryo honor. Lots 10A and 10B each consisted of 3 embryos from the mating of DDD Ms Charity 88T19 and DDD Masterplan 1019W10. Consigned by Champions Valley Brangus of Schulenburg, Texas, both lots were purchased by JLS International of Robertsdale, Alabama, for $500 per embryo. Also bringing $500 per embryo was lot 12, 3 embryos from the mating of Doguet’s Zena 103S5 and LTD of Brinks 415T28. Purchased by the Jennings family of Meridian, Texas, the embryos were consigned by Diamond K Ranch of Hempstead, Texas.

In the semen sale, two lots tied for high selling honors. Lot 30, five straws of DDD Dynamite 804B25 donated by Doguet’s Diamond D Ranch of Poteet, Texas and Lot 40, five straws of MC Stunner 628B2 donated

by Mill Creek of Puryear, Tennessee and Lack-Morrison Brangus of Clovis, New Mexico, each brought $210 per straw from Triple Crown Ranch of Angleton, Texas.

Lot 49, five straws of Trio’s MLS Cortez 175C6 brought $120 per straw.

The semen was donated by Trio Cattle and Genetics of Dallas, Texas and MLS Rancho La Victoria of Mexico and was purchased by GKB Cattle of Waxahachie, Texas.

Rounding out the high lots of semen were Lots 44 and 45, five straws each of SJCC Trio’s CEO 175C5 sold for $110 per straw to Faith Bice of Hempstead, Texas. The semen was donated by El Sendero South Texas Red Brangus.

The SOC Sale is one of the biggest fundraisers for the IJBBA. Commissions from the heifers, bulls, and embryos as well as the proceeds from the donated semen and miscellaneous lots help offset a large portion of the expense of hosting the NJBS. This year, $30,375 was raised for the IJBBA during the SOC Sale.

he 2017 Brangus Futurity was held July 24-29 at the Four States Fairgrounds in Texarkana, Arkansas.

Judge Doug Satree, of Montague, Texas, evaluated more than 200 entries shown by 96 exhibitors.

International Brangus Breeders Association’s (IBBA) staff was represented by Executive Vice President Tommy Perkins, PhD., PAS, its field service representative, Matt Murdoch, member relations specialist, Tullina Wilson. IBBA President Brandon Belt, Director Carolyn Belden Carson, and Director Danny Farris were in attendance as well.

The IBBA congratulates these winners. The participation of Brangus breeders in shows promotes the success of the breed.

The Grand Champion Heifer was JCC MISS RUBY LEE 209D, exhibited

by Madelaine Pack. The Reserve Grand Champion Heifer was Doguet Diamond D Ranch’s DDD SWEET SOURCE 38D22.

The Red Brangus Grand Champion Heifer was Wolf Point Ranch, GKB Cattle and South Jewel Cattle Company’s MS MARIA CLARA MBJFAGAN004U. The Reserve Red Grand Champion Heifer was KK MISS LUCKY 360C, exhibited by Weston Hinze.

The Grand Champion Pair was PP ELEANORS JADE 915C1, exhibited

by Madelaine Pack. The Reserve Grand Champion Pair was JCC MS MYLA 1252C2, exhibited by Mattie Beasley.
