Presidents Report

T

here has been a great deal of commitment and time put in by various personnel both on or outside the committees. One in particular is our Vice-President Peter Snow. The time and effort put into obtaining sponsorship has paid off immensely.

With four greens sponsored for a period of three years is a fantastic effort in the economic times of today. It is now up to members to support the sponsors and keep them a part of our Club. Well done Peter.

Two new events put on by the Match Committees, “The Father and Son” and the “Mother and Daughter” day, were an outstanding success and must become an ongoing part of our programme.

There is still a lot of work to be done around the Club and all members are asked to contribute time if they can.

I congratulate all who participated in pennants for the season, we had a pretty good season even if we did not do as well in some grades as others.

The Club Championships were well patronized and congratulations to all place getters.

At the last AGM, members elected to the various committees were voted in for a two year period. With that in mind there should be no requirement for elections for the committees. Until the AGM in June, stay well and to those heading North a safe journey.

From the Secretaries Desk

A

nother summer season has passed, with teams from both ladies and the men’s teams having quite a bit of success over the year. With quite a few teams in the finals and grand finals, however only limited returns as regards promotions. However, I am sure that we are set up for another good year next year.

As you may have noticed, we have employed Karin Zitsmann to look after the office during the week, and this has allowed me to spend less time at the club, but has also allowed me to complete various tasks and obligations from home, where the interference factor is far more reasonable. Only concerns that I have at home is if one of the grand children demand some time, but this has it advantages also.

Karin has fitted in well, and we have some plans for her to complete a number of

different tasks over the next period, being those that require quite some time, and will at the end of the day, enable us to communicate with the members far more effectively.

One of these is to sort out the email addresses, and separate and list various categories, such as those that are members, those that are on our list for Masters events (especially the Masters Singles), as well as those that are there for other reasons. By sorting these out, and separating one from another, we will be more specific with our emails, and allow us to send out flyers for coming events to other clubs direct, flyers to our members with regard to social, bowling and croquet events, as well as our newsletter.

We have also listed on a database all of addresses of the other clubs within WA, and urge anyone that needs to correspond with any other clubs about a forthcoming event, that they use this for the production of address labels. These can be tailored to cover just a few to as many clubs as you need. Please see Karin if you need something in this regard.

I will be spending some time away over the winter period, but will be in email contact on a daily basis, hence if anything comes up whilst I am away, these matters can be dealt with fairly quickly. With the use of scanners and emails, virtually any correspondence can be remitted to me or sent on to other committee members very quickly. Majority of those that need this sort of information are currently on email, hence we can get information to and from those that matter, quickly if not faster.

With regard membership, all members should now have their invoices, and we urge as many as possible to pay as soon as possible, in order that we can get on with plans for work to be done over the winter period, as well as planning ahead for next summer. To this end, we need to know numbers of members planning on playing pennants, and urge all of those planning to play next year, to submit their form as sent with the invoice.

There was some misunderstanding in the initial stages about the discount for “Senior Members”. It was initially planned that members should apply for this discount, but

at the end of the day we decided to be pro active rather than reactive, and issued additional invoices to those that are eligible. To qualify you need to have been a member of either bowls or croquet for a continuous period of ten years, and have attained the age of seventy five, on or before the 30th April 2010. Anyone who had broken membership does not qualify. The discount is 25% off the club membership fees only, and does not apply to the capitation due to BowlsWA or the Croquet governing bodies. To those that were messed about a bit in this process, we apologise.

We do have one member that has paid their fees, and when this was processed through the till, the member’s name was not recorded. Therefore, we have one member that has paid their fees, and to date has not received their membership card. If this is you, please see the office to clarify. We have the date of payment, as well as details of the card with which the fee was paid, and can therefore confirm these details, only concern is that we do not have a name. If you feel this may be you, please make contact.

We also apologise to those members that got their invoices for locker fees at a later stage, but this was not completed due to a misunderstanding about when these fees were due. With regard to lockers, a few have become available from those older members that no longer have a need for them, and they have been re-allocated very quickly. With regard the ladies, the club saw fit to purchase some additional lockers, and these have now been installed. Majority have been taken up, but there are a few still vacant. If you want one, see the office, or place your name on the list which is on the notice boards. Please make sure that your bowls bag fits before applying, as some are too large, especially those that have wheels.

In general terms, I feel that the club has had a good “year�, and this is both on and off the greens and both financially as well as competitively. For this to happen we rely on a fair number of members who contribute their time voluntarily. We have a number of members that make a contribution without need for recognition,

and generally complete their various tasks without fuss, and seek no rewards. We also have some that are more obvious in their tasks, mainly because of the task that they are completing, but believe me, all are appreciated, and all are valuable to the club. However, there are a hardcore number of members that can be relied on regularly, and to those we owe an added debt of gratitude.

Having said all of this, we have the occasional detractor, who feels that the club has not met their expectations in some form or other, but generally these are people that contribute very little apart from “playing bowls or croquet”. To those people, I suggest that you look around, and see if you can assist, rather that detract from the club, and you might be surprised at the rewards that this can bring to you, as well as recognizing the efforts of others more easily.

The date for the Annual General Meeting has not been formally decided, but I suggest will be on Sunday the 14th June 2010, as the previous Sunday involves a long weekend, and traditionally less members are available as a result. Further advices will issue in this regard shortly.

Greens and Grounds Report

H

i Everyone. Well another season has come to an end, and although the club did not break any world records as far as Pennants were concerned, we did OK, Especially the ladies. My congratulations to all concerned, including the selectors who have a thankless task.

It was a very busy year for the green staff, as we hosted a lot of events. So here is a big well done to David, Tony, and Ron K. for all their hard work. And lets not forget all the volunteers who did all that was required and more. Well done guys you are a credit to the club.

The greens are looking very tired, but as you can see we are already starting on the renovations. “E” green has been Laser levelled and will be back in play in approx 5 weeks time.

“A” and ”B” green have been verti mowed and will be laser levelled on 16th April and be out of action for most of the winter. It is anticipated to start work on “D” green in late spring.

In the next week or two we will be changing our playing from north –south to eastwest, and we will be taking down the shade cloth for the winter.

We have plans to construct a brick wall along the southern bank of C and D greens to segregate the gardens from the grass and to give the people who look after the gardens a decent area to work with.

We are also looking at cutting down the hedge on the eastern end of E green as it is looking in bad shape. We will keep you all informed of progress and we will of course be calling for helpers.

Congratulations to our green keeper Dave Rankin on his selection in the full State Side. By the time you read this he will have returned from South Australia with the side, and hopefully they were successful. Incidentally (for those who have asked me) Dave does not play pennants for Sorrento he is a member of Osborne Park Bowling club, where he skips a rink in Premier division.

To all the people have supported and assisted me this year, a big thank you. To those who have criticized me for not performing up to their lofty standards TOUGH (I did my best) Have a well earned rest from pennants and enjoy your winter break.

Message from Men’s Captain

O

ne hundred and seventy seven men members played during the past Pennant season, either Thursday or Saturday. To fill 8 divisions on Saturdays we needed 124 players - we used 158 different players.

Likewise to fill our 9 divisions on Thursdays we needed 100 players and we used 131 players, at some time.

There were 74 players usually available both Pennant days. Only 10 played every game: Baker, Collishaw, Conyngham, Giles, Hogan, Peters, Tassone, A. Taylor, R. Taylor, Tennant. Thirteen missed only one game: Anderson, Bennett, Campbell, Cleary, Cooper, Elliott, Forkin, McCullagh, Rolls, Sanders, Stapledon, Stimpson, Walker Below is a list of the best statistics (a very short list at that???)

Congratulations to the Saturday divisions of 1 Blue North, 2 White, 3 Gold, 5 White and 6 Gold in making the Promotional Play-offs. Div. 5 White was successful (one of their Skippers has the honour of being our oldest Pennant player and hasn’t missed a game this year - we admire you “Ern Conyngham’)!!

Congratulation also to the Thursday Divisions of 3 Red, 4 Red, 6 White and 6 Blue in making the finals.

Message from the Lady Captain

W

e are nearing the end of the ‘official’ bowling season. Pennants are over.

We had three teams in the play offs. Well done to all and to the Selection Committee.

The Championships are all finished - thanks to those who entered and to the Match Committee for running these and the State events held at our club.

The Pennant Wind Up was a happy and friendly occasion - a good time to let the hair down.

Our Winter calendar will commence in May - keep an eye on the Notice Board.

Thank you to all volunteers for their time donated, this is much appreciated.

id you know that Niel and Eleanor Adams have just celebrated their 49th Wedding Anniversary? Well done! ☺☺☺☺☺

Did you hear that there was great excitement on D-green during the Wally Smith Day when Helen Ironside experienced a wardrobe malfunction when her new pedal pushers split? The consensus was that it was lucky she was wearing knickers! Herbie Eisenmann produced a safety pin which Denis Saunders offered to insert.. The game then proceeded without further mishap. ☺☺☺☺☺ Did you hear that Graeme and Helen O’Brien have just become grandparents for the first time? Their granddaughter’s name is Niamh.

Did you hear that Doug and Ros Pittaway have just become grandparents for the 14th time? There must be something in the water! ☺☺☺☺☺ Your editor is trying to collect a full set of all the club newsletters that have been produced. This file will be a master file ( not to be destroyed) and will be available for anyone who wants to produce a club history. If anyone has old newsletters please will you check to see whether you have a copy of one or more of the following missing editions: May 2000, January 2002, April/May 2003, May/June 2004, Aug/Sept 2004, and any newsletters dated 2005 and 2006 ☺☺☺☺☺ Did you hear about the Thornlie Bowling Club member who died and left $500000 to his club? It was used for two new greens and for refurbishment of the kitchen. If any members are updating their will they may wish to follow his example. ☺☺☺☺☺ Apologies from your Editor for neglecting to thank Steve Draper for his help with the refurbishment of the Men’s toilets. Steve helped with the plumbing and this was not mentioned in the February newsletter. ☺☺☺☺☺ Did you hear that John Collishaw and Tony Sabatino did well in the Bowls WA Over 60’s competition. John won the pairs and Tony was third overall ☺☺☺☺☺ Did you hear that Hans Correlje (and some of his mates) got to the semi-finals of the State Triples? Well done Hans. ☺☺☺☺☺

Did you hear that Bryan Towsend’s excuse for a bad bowl? His socks were worrying him! As soon as he removed his socks his started to play “Out of his socks”!! ☺☺☺☺☺ Did you hear that one of our top bowlers managed three wrong bias’ in a Pennant game? His number 2 got the blame for passing him his bowls with the “little rings on the wrong side”. ☺☺☺☺☺ Thank you to those of you who have provided some jokes or contributed in some way to our newsletters. A special word of thanks to Denise who does a lot of the typing and proof-reading. Also to Kevin Coffey who helped with the printing of the Feb newsletter.

Coaches Corner –“Hot Hints from Heardie”

T

he Pennant season has now finished. Both the Ladies and Men’s teams had a very good season. BUT there is still a lot of improving to do in your bowls, and everyone can improve their bowls. Now is the time to practice not your good shots, but your WEAK ones.

The greens will be starting to slow up now so, instead of bowling to the jack, bowl to a metre behind the jack.

If you are thinking of changing your bowls, do it now! It will give you plenty of time to know what they can do before next Pennant season.

There are three factors, which decide who our champions are to be, and they are • Talent, • Hard work and practice and • Control of the mind.

The ability to control anxiety, maintain confidence, concentrate on the present are some of the mental skills that players need to acquire.

If you talk to successful players about their top games they felt physically relaxed, they were in control, and confident, focused on the present, and weren’t distracted by outside influences.

Remember the four ‘C’s.

Confidence, Concentration, Consistency and Control.

Men’s Match Committee Report

C

ongratulations to Roland and Barbara Hill who won a closely contested Mixed Pairs against Ron and Helen Kuziela. The final was played in front of a large crowd who watched Barbara Hill kill one end and Ron Kuziela kill two ends A field of 61 bowlers entered this year’s Men’s Singles. After sectional and alignment rounds were completed in the first week (7th March), 16 bowlers were left to fight for the honour of champion men’s’ singles bowler for 2009-2010. After two more rounds, the semi-finalists were Ron Kuziela, John Sanders, Mick Martin and Peter Crow. Ron and Mick progressed to the final which was played on Sunday 21st March.

The match was tight early with the score at 7-7 after 10 ends. Then Ron scored a decisive break with a maximum 4 shot end. Mick pegged a couple of shots back and saved match twice by either killing the end or carrying the jack into the ditch, but in the end Ron Kuziela prevailed 25-16.

Congratulations Ron on your first Sorrento Men’s Singles Championship win.

Thanks to all participants, markers (yes, even yours Mick) and umpires for making this even very successful.

Ladies Match Report

I

n the Ladies Championship Triples Helen Paterson, Audrey Chappel and Beryl Tutt won and the Runners-Up were Vonnie King, Kath Harris and Lee Leach.

The Plate Event was won by Nelly Heard, Fran Bracknell and Emily Dunn.

All games were really good and very closely contested. It was a pity that more teams did not enter.

The Ladies Veteran Singles was won by Fran Bracknell who successfully retained her title. She had to fight all the way in the final against Barbara Rutherford who was runner-up. Clair Hanlon won the plate event.

The Ladies Novice Singles was won by Coral Smith in a very good final against Barbara Claffey who was runner-up.

Sorrento held a very successful Invitation Day which was won F. Kelly, B. Gedge, G. Hartland and C. Musty from Vic Park/Carlisle. Runners-up were L. Moffat, D. Cooper, S. Punes and M. Gunn from Osborne Park.

Report from the Men’s’ Selection Committee

W

e are now at the end of the season and have only Thursday finals to complete.

Overall the Thursday teams didn’t do so well. 1 Blue has been demoted to 2nd division and our present 2nd division being demoted to 3rd division.

Two years ago we had 1 white and 3 second divisions, now we have 1 second and 4 third divisions unless 3 gold can win their finals game on Thursday 8th. We also have a 6th division in the finals.

Saturday Pennants were in a better position with five teams getting into the play-offs and three of them into the finals with one promotion. One 5th division got promotion to 4th next season.

One Blue got into the finals again finishing a highly commendable second and earning the right to play off in the promotional finals and to host these finals at our

club. Unfortunately they just couldn’t get over that last hurdle. It came down to one point aggregate loss (84 to 85) to Midland Morrison in the end which was great for the spectators but a lot of pressure on “Angry” Anderson who had to play those last bowls. Once more no promotion to 1 White. This we INTEND to change next year!

Thanks must go to Helen Kuziela for doing the big scoreboard during the finals and having to decipher what the Third’s were signalling or were they just scratching their heads.

I would just like to thank my fellow selectors for all their help. We finished up with the same five that started, so we must have been compatible. All for now until next season.

Men’s 2 White

M

aking the final play-offs was an achievement in itself as around Christmas we were closer to the bottom of the table than the top. Then the team showed some determination and consistency to finish in the creditable position of fourth. On the weekend of the finals we travelled to Nollamara Bowling Club to meet Scarborough with one objective in mind – WIN! Unfortunately, however, this was not to be. The green was timed at 14 seconds but most of us believed 10 to 11 seconds would have been more accurate. So after being used to playing on our good greens running at around 16 seconds we all struggled early.

All rinks bar Ron Rogers’ four were behind at the half way mark and the team were well behind in the aggregate. Despite the fact that we all made a late charge it was in vain as we ended up losing the match by 3 shots.

We were very disappointed with this loss and with our overall performance but the defeat did not stop us from celebrating the season end back at the club.

May we congratulate all the teams that made the play-offs. And to 5 – white: Well done on earning a promotion. Commiserations to 1 – blue. To be defeated by one shot on the last end would have been a bitter pill to swallow.

Please allow me to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their efforts and contributions throughout the season. I guess at the end of the day we have to accept that the better teams won. But that’s not to say we didn’t have fun trying.

Gold turns to Dust

O

h dear! Having entered the play off’s our 3rd Division Men’s team (as the number two side) with home ground advantage, allowed the unthinkable to happen.!

Firstly on Saturday morning playing Warwick we came second winning on only one rink and losing on three! Simultaneously Morley defeated Osborne Park to enter the final.

In the afternoon the same happened against Morley with Sorrento only winning on one rink. On both occasions Graeme O’Brien skippered the winning rinks. Well done Graeme! Graeme was ably supported by Phil Webb, Philip Oldershaw and Ken Giles.

Report from the Ladies Selection Committee

T

uesdays pennants had a good year with 3 teams playing off for the flag but, unfortunately, we didn’t manage to have a win.

There were some really close games on Tuesday with 1 White losing to Thornlie by 5 points and then to Wanneroo by 3 points. 1 Green North also had some great games losing to Vic Park/Carlisle by 4 points and having a win against Morley by 25 points and 3 White had a win on Tuesday. Both 1 Green North and 3 White had to play again on Wednesday but 1 Green lost to Vic Park/Carlisle by 13 points and 3 White lost to Belmont by 11 points.

1 White had a most successful season for 2009/10. All games were hard fought and strongly competitive. Division members played all games with a strong spirit of comradeship, support and encouragement for each other and a strong commitment to the game. Of 15 games played (3 were cancelled because of poor weather) Sorrento won 11 games, lost four and finished lst on the Pennant ladder. As a result, the division won the right to compete for the Pennant but, in spite of working very hard for the win, it was not to be this season. It will be a motivating goal for the new season.

1 Green North also had a very successful season and also finished first on the ladder.

The teams played well together and were always very enthusiastic throughout the Pennant season. The three sides always supported each other and worked hard to get the aggregate each week. They are looking forward a moving up to 1 White next year.

3 White had a very good season and finished lst in their Division. It was a very good effort to end up in the top position. Congrats on your promotion to 2nd Division.

Well done to all the players for proving a lot of cynics wrong. I would also like to thank the girls who stood in as reserves for the finals, and also to all our supporters who came and watched and cheered but sadly not as loud as the opposition.

It was great to see so many come and enjoy the wind-up celebrations after the game.

Everybody seemed to have a great time, and the entertainment went off fabulously.

Thanks to all who made our job fairly enjoyable and to my band of helpers a big thank you. Looking forward to seeing you all next year.

Ladies Saturday Pennants

I

n the ladies Saturday Pennants competition, our Sorrento 3rd division team finished top of our colour, taking us through to the grand final against the team from Perth and Tattersalls.

We had a good practice on the previous day in preparation for the big match on Sunday 21st March to be played at Bedford Bowling Club. Everyone was really nervous and anxious to bowl their best. However the opposing teams were very strong. The team of Monique Kopec, Helen Kuziela, Lena McKenna and Tracey Hauck managed a narrow, last-end win of 15-14.

Unfortunately, the four of Alice O’Brien, Sharon Eggers, Christine Eley and Judy Farrell were outclassed by our opposition to lose 20-11, thus losing the aggregate as well. It was disappointing to lose but we were beaten by a strong, deserving team. We enjoyed our summer of bowls and look forward to trying to get the flag next season.

Farewell Message from Alan and Hazel Arter

W

ell we the Arters Hazel &Alan have made the difficult decision to leave Sorrento and join Merriwa where we now live.

We have thoroughly enjoyed our time with you all and the friendships we have made, so its sad to say goodbye. Thank you everyone for your friendship, support,& encouragement in good times & bad & hope this wonderful club goes from strength to strength – winning all games except those against Merriwa!!!!!!

Jenni Lockwood’s house building trip to Cambodia.

D

id you know that in February this year, Jenni Lockwood went to Cambodia with the Tabitha Foundation to work on a house building program.

Tabitha is run by a very hard working and determined Canadian woman, Janne Ritskes who lives in Phnom Penh. Janne created Tabitha in 1995 to help the poorest of the poor rebuild their lives after the devastation and genocide of the Khmer Rouge regime, Jenni says that what attracted her to work with Tabitha was that their programs are not just about giving as a hand out but rather a collaborative approach that provides an incentive for each family to overcome the many adversities they have suffered.

The houses Tabitha provide to Cambodian families start with a savings program. The villagers are first shown how to start a small trade or craft undertaking and Tabitha encourages them, offering a savings plan and 10% return on their savings. The local people start with purchasing small items such as a bike for their children to ride to school. Eventually, they start to save towards a house and this is where our donations really make a difference.

Jenni has been fund raising by making and selling theatre caps around Perth and interstate hospitals for some time now. This year she received a wonderful donation from Hollywood Private Hospital which supplied material for 2 houses.

On this trip Jenni had a team of 7 men and 20 women and managed to raise funds to build 20 houses which is a great result. On arrival groups are taken on a short history tour in Phnom Penh. Visits to the genocide museum and the killing fields are daunting experiences but important for helpers to understand why these people are in this position today.

Then it is off to the country, an over night for the building team and an early rise for the next two days of extremely hot and tiring work, hammering our hearts out using tin and bamboo – all local products.

Jenni we would love to have club members join her on her next trip. She is looking for people who want to be involved in a program where both personal donation and physical contribution is involved in a way that gives hope and self belief back to the poor people of Cambodia.

The people in the villages are sometimes unable to show fully their pride in what they have been able to achieve but the ‘thank you’ smiles in the photos at the end of a build says it all.

Silver Chain Charity Day

T

he annual Silver Chain Charity Day was held on Friday 19 March and following a great afternoon bowling, club members and guests took part in a raffle of over sixty prizes which had been donated by corporate sponsors or club members.

Funds raised from the raffle, together with a percentage of the day’s green fees donated by the Sorrento Bowling Club, and including all money normally set aside for the day’s bowling prizes were again donated to the Silver Chain Association.

Silver Chain is a not-for-profit organisation that is one of the largest providers of community, clinical and health care services in Australia, assisting over 40,000 people each year. They offer a diverse range of services, including home care, palliative care, emergency care, family health care and other care services.

Peter Biggins from Silver Chain says he is very grateful for the amazing financial support provided by the social members of the Sorrento Bowling Club.

2010 is the seventeenth year this fund raising event has been sponsored by the Sorrento Bowling Club with an impressive total of $1200 raised this year.

Bowling competition winners on the day were Peter Ross, Derry Ellis, Alison Turner and Russell Lockwood. They each received a donated bottle of Margaret River wine and they will have their names engraved on the perpetual trophy cup.

A big thank you to principal organizers, Barbara Stow and Sylvia McLaughlan and to the other volunteers who assisted with the days events. Sylvia spends a great deal of time over the two weeks leading up to these events visiting potential sponsors, sometimes necessarily on several occasions, seeking the donation of prizes, and this year obtained some thirty four prizes to be raffled.

While it is not possible to include the names of all club members who helped with the fund raising, helped to organize and run the days event, or made personal donations of the items to be raffled, we do need to recognize some members who made a significant contribution to the success of the day. Pat and Austin Duffy and Monique Kopek obtained items to be raffled from sponsors and Monique again baked and sold cakes to raise funds. We would also like to thank Chris Tibbits for his help.

There is a need to clarify one aspect of the day’s events. Some participants have noted a large box of prizes held by Neil McLaughlan at the end of the day and have assumed that they were prizes won by either Sylvia or Neil.

The reality is that quite a number of tickets are sold to people during the week prior 27

to the charity day in order to increase the donation to the Silver Chain. Dart Club members, corporate bowlers and others buy tickets but are not able to attend the draw and personally claim any prizes. When prizes are not claimed on the day they are handed to Neil who lists the ticket and prize recipient’s details, personally delivers some prizes, places the remainder behind the bar, and then contacts the owners so that they can claim them at a later date. For the record Sylvia spent sixty dollars on tickets and received one prize. Neil received one prize which he handed back to be redrawn.

People were encouraged to buy large numbers of tickets by the attraction of the potential to win many of the sixty or so prizes available, in order to maximize the funds raised, and each year some participants luckily have won several prizes.

However, the days focus is not on the prizes but on fun filled day bowling and the final donation to a very worthwhile cause.

Twilight Bowls

T

hanks to all for another brilliant season of twilight bowls. A particular thanks to Richard Fermoyle and Ken Giles for their work collecting names and fees and organising games each week. With latecomers and no-shows and the like, it is never an easy job. Thanks gentlemen.

Some facts and figures: • Altogether 144 different bowlers took part, with an average of 52 playing each week. The highest number of bowlers was 72. We played 17 weeks, missing only 1 scheduled week due to the weather. Only 7 players played every week. Another 8 players missed only once.

• 912 bowlers paid their fees (and for the most part the cash collected balanced, 29

didn’t it Richard!), so over $4,500 was paid into club coffers.

• Over $1800 was distributed to winners during the year, including the popular “lucky tenners”.

• Of all the bowlers who played, Barry Jones scored the greatest number of points per game. In Barry’s 15 games he lost only once, and scored a bonus point seven times.

• I don’t want to embarrass them by naming him, but one bowler who played more than half of the games managed only 1 win, 1 draw and 12 losses…(!)

AND THE WINNER WAS:Rowley Bayman. Rowley, accompanied by Tom Nasuti for all but one week managed to accumulate 57 points. Rowley scored 34 points just by turning up, then won on 15 occasions including 8 times with a bonus point. Congratulations Rowley.

THE RUNNER UP Was Euie Tennant. Euie was partnered by me for all but 2 weeks and scored 54 points. He won 14 times out of 17 matches with 6 bonus point wins.

LEADING LADY Alice O’Brien took this prize. Mostly playing with Ron Rogers, Alice finished 12th overall. Alice scored 10 wins from 16 matches with 3 bonus point wins.

Umpire’s Corner New Umpires.

A good response was received to the Bowls WA tutorials for accreditation of new umpires with 6 members volunteering to become umpires this year. Thanks to the 4 men and 2 ladies who have volunteered for the course.

Calling the Umpire Points to remember when calling for the umpire.

• The umpire should only be called when both teams or opponents have agreed to seek the umpire’s judgement on a measurement or law.

• When calling the umpire for a bowls measurement, give an indication of the distance involved so that the umpire can select and bring with him the appropriate measuring equipment.

• All surplus/non relevant bowls should be removed from the head to give the umpire a clear view and space to work.

• Advise the umpire of exactly what requires measuring.

• All players should stand well clear, preferably on the bank, while the umpire measures, except when asked by the umpire to assist.

• For all measurements the umpire’s decision is final and should not be questioned or 31

commented on.

• For umpire’s decisions relating to the meaning or interpretation of any Law, or given set of circumstances not covered by the Laws, there is a right of appeal to Bowls WA, through the Controlling Body by the skip of either team, the manager of either side or either player in a singles game. The umpire should be advised immediately if an appeal is to be made and a $50 deposit lodged. If Bowls WA finds the appeal to be frivolous the deposit is forfeited, otherwise it is returned to the appellant.

Use of the foot as an indicator A query was recently raised as to the use of the foot to show a bowler where to draw to. Law 52 states that no object can be placed on the green to help a player. In the past this law was interpreted to include placing the foot (the object) where you wanted a bowler to draw to while he delivered the bowl. Bowls WA have advised that this interpretation no longer applies and such action is permitted. However the foot should be removed from the head as soon as the bowl leaves the hand.

Thank You from the Bournes

S

imon, our son, as many of you already know dislocated his neck in a swimming pool accident whilst holidaying in Bali. After alignment surgery in RPH , the vertebrae was pinned into place and his long road to recovery began.

He is now in Shenton Park for rehabilitation, where he displays Great Spirit, determination and a positive disposition. We are very proud of his efforts and attitude.

Marina, his wife, has been a tower of strength and his two beautiful daughters are being well looked after by family and friends.

We would like to sincerely thank our friends at Sorrento Bowling Club for your continued support, concern and prayers, not only for Simon’s progress but also for your thoughtful and encouraging words to us both. It really feels like we have an extended family at the club.

Croquet Report

R

ecently the Croquet club hosted 19 members from the Scarborough Probus Club.

Their members showed much enthusiasm in the game of golf croquet and we look forward to some feedback which could possibly result in a few new members.

A big thank you to those who helped with coaching and especially those who prepared a wonderful afternoon tea – our guests were most appreciative of your efforts.

Last month, 12 of our members, along with players from other clubs, enjoyed a doubles ricochet tournament which was held at the Nedlands Club. Thanks to Geoff Bloomfield and Pat Hobson who arranged this event.

Two teams from Sorrento are enjoying taking part in the Forrest Park Summer Nights tournament which is being played at present over a period of 12 weeks. Thirteen teams have entered from within the state and our Awesome 4some team is doing extremely well. With only two more games to play, they are hoping to ‘sneak’ into the top 3 rankings by the end of the tournament.

A few players have, over the past couple of months, played croquet on a Tuesday evening. After a few games they join with about 100 bowling club players and partake of quite a scrumptious BBQ dinner (and a drink or two of course!) This has been a really fun time and we look forward to next summer when hopefully more of our members will join us.

Some croquet members have been cruising, flying and motoring to holiday destinations all over the world over the past two months. We welcome you back and hope you all enjoyed your travels!

Geoff Bloomfield is at present visiting Gallipoli and is on tour for nearly three weeks taking in other parts of the country as well. We wish him safe journeys.

At present the croquet club is having a drive to recruit new members. A flyer is available to distribute and we would ask all members for their support in this endeavour.

To close, we wish to extend to the green keeper our thanks for the way he has maintained our greens which are now reported to be ‘the best’ in the metropolitan area. They are a joy to play on!

Community Bowls Program.

T

he 2009-10 Community Bowls Season has now been completed and I am pleased to advise that a very successful program was had by all.

I wish to thank all those Members who assisted in running Tuesday and Friday nights, not forgetting an honourable mention to Joan Whitham and all her kitchen assistants.

Special thanks to Barry Bradshaw and John Sturk for running the Friday night Program and a very special thank you to my assistant Phil Kimberley who ordered and picked up all the meat for Tuesday and Friday as well as assisting myself with all of the Prize organizing.

The final night on each occasion was complete with Tony Krsticevic – MLA for Carine assisting in prize presentation on Friday night and also participating in a team with City of Joondalup Councillor Russ Fishwick on the final Tuesday night.

The winning teams who will compete in the Corporate Shield Carnival at Warwick Bowling Club on the 10 April 2010 are Tuesday – Wild Turkeys and Friday – Duncraig Deviates.

Financially for the club this year was very successful, although the final figures where not available, I know that we were going to finish well in front of last year’s figure of $15000, remembering that this figure does not include any Bar Turnover.

We were very fortunate to receive a donation from a Community team member of a quantity of new 2 Bowl Carry Bags and these were given to Joan Whitham who raffled them on behalf of the Bowling Club with great success In thanking people who assisted with our Community Bowls Program I would like to thank Tony Pilgrim for his effort with the scoreboards and Ian Linford for his work on the bowls trolleys and a very special thank you to Phil Kimberley who was responsible for ordering and delivering the meat for Tuesday and Friday meals as well as assisting myself with all of the prize organizing, with members like this we will always succeed.

We must not forget Glenn Boston, Rachael Bryant and the bar staff for their organizing of the Greens Refreshment Trolley, which was very popular.

All teams were very complimentary on the Program and are looking forward to next season.

Visit to the club by Tony Krsticevic MLA Member for Carine

O

n Friday 20th January 2010 Tony Krsticevic MLA Member for Carine came to the Club to introduce himself to the members. Friday night is always a good time for a visit to the Sorrento Bowling club. The whole club is a-buzz with Social Bowlers finishing their afternoon, Community bowlers having their dinner and getting ready to play, Keith and Margaret Cooper selling meat tray raffle tickets, Bar staff cheerful and keeping everyone entertained and members getting as many Chase the Joker tickets as they can (we all know how you get tickets).

Tony shook hands with as many club members as was possible in the circumstances and all members were glad to see him and said so. One member said it was unusual to see a politician in a time that was not an election year so it is certainly to Tony’s credit that he took the time to come to our club room and ask if there was anything that he could do for us.

Tony was questioned about his bowling ability and admitted that he had only bowled a few times over the years but he said that in the future he may try to find time to practice. He had lots of offers of coaching but had to kindly refuse them.

Des Bennett took advantage of the situation and asked Tony if he would present the trophies to the Community Bowlers at the end of the season and Tony agreed. That will add to the occasion and make the evening a little bit more special.

This was not a fleeting visit and Tony stayed for quite a while, meeting our new sponsors and swapping a few jokes with our President Ian Marshall. Everyone had a very pleasant evening and the club would welcome Tony back any time he has the time to spare. We may even get him in one of our novelty bowling competitions.

What we do: Match Committee (Men)

M

en’s Match Committee members are volunteers who donate many hours to the successful operations of The Club. For each event conducted at the Club, Match Committee members are usually rostered in pairs so that no one person is required to be at all events. Duties include preparing rinks with mats, jacks and umpires equipment, putting up flags, writing up, issuing and collecting cards, and communicating scores and results to organisers, the newsletter and to the press. We also count and distribute green fees to the club and prize money to the winners.

The major events are:• State-run events.

• Annual Master Singles.

• Club championships.

• Easter Carnival.

• Social bowls.

• Hosted visits from other clubs or organisations.

State-run events can comprise several championships. Sorrento Bowling Club regularly bids for and is regularly awarded the honour of hosting State Fours, Triples, Pairs or Singles. We also regularly host the annual Country Week event each March.

These events are centrally organised by Bowls WA, but host club match committee members organise the activities at each club.

The Masters Singles is an invitational event which Sorrento took over from the now-defunct Royal Park Bowling Club many years ago. To be invited to this event, bowlers must be either state representatives or club champions, so a very high standard of bowls is on display. Past winners include many highly-regarded State bowlers. As host for this event, The Club’s role is to issue invitations, then entirely conduct the event.

The Men’s Match Committee also organise the annual cycle of Club championships.

We are firstly responsible for scheduling the events. We then call for entrants and then conduct a draw. Nominations for club championships usually close one week before the event because we need to let the greens staff know how many rinks to prepare. Often it is necessary to conduct alignment rounds to ensure even numbers in subsequent rounds. On the days of the event we prepare and allocate rinks for play, read out the playing conditions and issue cards. After each match the results are recorded, and cards issued for subsequent matches. There are eight annual events organised by the men’s committee. In addition to the Men’s’ Fours, Triples, Pairs and Singles, we organise the Mixed Pairs, Mixed Fours, Veteran’s Singles and Novice Singles.

The Easter Carnival requires quite a deal of extra organisation, particularly with regard to arranging sponsorship, collecting entrance fees and awarding cash prizes.

The “men’s” social bowls week typically consists of Thursday men’s popsticks, Friday and Sunday mixed social bowls, and Saturday social bowls. In summer, Tuesday twilight bowls is also organised. Additional duties for these events include receiving entrance nominations by phone or in person, and arranging either matches or a draw for partners. Winners are then determined and cash prizes awarded.

On occasions, Sorrento also hosts visits from other clubs touring from interstate. We also hosted the national Police Bowls championship in 2009. And in 2008 we hosted a visit from a touring group from New South Wales.

End-of-Season Club awards are a joint responsibility of both the men’s and the Ladies Match Committees. Every event winner, runner-up, plate winner and losing semi-finalists in singles events receives an award. The results must be collected, totalled and trophies or cash prizes purchased and awarded at the end of the season.

How can you help the men’s match committee?

1. You can volunteer to be on this committee at the annual general meeting! In 20092010, Chris Tibbits chaired the men’s match committee consisting of Ken Giles, Norm Claffey, Trevor Orton, Richard Fermoyle and Wayne Olive. On occasions, John Taylor, Alex Third, and in particular Stan McCullagh have all assisted at various stages. Several ladies have also assisted with Friday and Sunday socials bowls organisation.

2. You can nominate for club events. The success of the event is not determined by the weather or the greens, or even the draw or the result, but by the participation of the bowlers.

3. You can be on time for events. Nothing is more inconvenient to the match committee, and to other bowlers, than to have people either running late or not show up at all. Please ensure you are at the club in plenty of time if you are participating.

At least 15 minutes before the advertised start time is best.

4. You can mark and return your cards to the match committee promptly after each match. Marking your card as clearly and accurately as possible is essential.

Remember that your team’s score goes on the left of the card (the “Us” columns), and your opponents’ on the right (the “Them” columns). Make sure that your card agrees with your opponents’ cards before handing them in. For almost every event, match committee members have to chase up missing cards. At the conclusion of every match, please hand your card in.

5. You can recognize that the Match Committee members are volunteers, and that they are humans, too. On occasions the workload on match committee members is quite intense. Please be patient if there is a short delay. Please be civil if you think the committee may have made the wrong decision. Respect that the decisions made have 38

been made in good faith with the benefit of the club members in mind. And if you feel that you can, PLEASE OFFER TO HELP. – The Men’s Match Committee

The Fable of Forkins Funny Finger (Also know as F.F.F.F)

W

ell, now. – here’s something I never knew before, and now that I know it, I feel compelled to send it on to my more intelligent friends in the hope that they, too, will feel edified.

Isn’t history more fun when you know something about it? Before the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, the French, anticipating victory over the English, proposed to cut off the middle finger of all captured English soldiers.

Without the middle finger it would be impossible to draw the renowned English longbow and therefore they would be incapable of fighting in the future.

This famous English longbow was made of the native English Yew tree, and the act of drawing the longbow was known as “plucking the yew” (or “pluck yew”).

Much to the bewilderment of the French, the English won a major upset and began mocking the French by waving their middle fingers at the defeated French, saying, “See, we can still pluck yew!” Since `pluck yew’ is rather difficult to say, the difficult consonant cluster at the beginning has gradually changed to a labiodentals fricative F’ and thus the words often used in conjunction with the one-finger-salute!
