SPIR ITUALITY - A way of living

Spirituality is a way of living. The root word of spirituality is the spirit that is our very souls. It is nothing but the knowledge of knowing ourselves, knowing the being, or more accurately could be said knowing, “ Who I am?” The sole purpose of spirituality is to establish a connection with the higher self or self realisation. Once a person realises his true nature and his original qualities he is on the spiritual path.

People often comprehend spirituality as religious stuff. Or better they think religion is spirituality. Digging deeper into this line we find that religion is a tool that was provided to humankind to make them realise the presence of a higher being. Spirituality is knowing that I am the higher Being.

Since a person is born in some of the other ways relates himself with different identities.

Those identities become his reality. He plays so many roles during his lifetime, for instance of a father, a son, a brother, etc. As a consequence, he becomes body-conscious and accepts these roles and his body as the true reality. He never realises that he is neither this body nor this mind, he is the higher being and this self realisation is the aim of spirituality.

A person can become spiritual by cleaning his mind daily through meditation and by remerging the true qualities of the soul that is purity, power, peace, love, joy, bliss, and knowledge. Meditation connects the person with the higher being by putting a full stop to his ongoing thoughts of this mundane world and gives him peace of mind. When the person’s mind is quiet and peaceful and the soul is happy, he radiates his positive vibes to the world and benefits everyone.

But among all these sounds, the most fundamental sound is the sound of silence that is the basis of all sounds. This sound is present in each and every individual and can be heard if the mind is totally quiet. Even our bodies produce this sound every moment. Meditation acts as a tool, quiets the mind, and helps in listening and realizing the sound of silence.

Through spirituality, a person achieves the ultimate purpose of his life. Yoga is again a facilitator that aids the person in doing so.

Yoga is one of the precious gifts of India to the world. Yoga means unity, unity with the ultimate divine, and when the soul unites with the ultimate is called self realisation, and self realisation is the ultimate aim of spirituality.

The issue of Exodus is the same as before.

That’s why there are many questions in people’s minds. Is there any change in the political and social conditions of the valley?

What are the causes of these killings? Is it Exodus 2.0? And also about how to look forward and how normalcy will again be seen in the valley?

Let’s find out the answers to these questions in this article.

Recently there is a spike in the killings done by terrorists in Kashmir. But this time it is a matter of concern because the terrorist groups, instead of killing and attacking security forces, are moving toward the soft targets i.e the innocent civilians which include both, civilians from minorities as well as majority communities.

Migrant workers are fleeing Kashmir with their families. Communal and hate killings by terrorists aren’t a new feature in the valley. But a sudden rise in killings of poor people, migrant labourers, workers, and other professionals in October created a fear in the minds of people, especially in the minorities. Migrant workers are choosing life over livelihood. The street of Kashmir at present is full of families, going back to their home state. From the Ethnic cleansing of Kashmiri Pandits in the 1990s till today, when innocent people in the name of religion are killed in 2021, not much has changed.

Recently killings of school principal and teacher, a renowned chemist, poor Bihari Pani puri, and Vada pav sellers. These targeted killings of people created a sense of fear in the valley. This is the main reason behind fleeing people.

After these killings, regional parties made a collective appeal to the civilians to not consider migration. Announcements were heard from the masjids for the minorities to not migrate from Kashmir. This is a big change seen in the mindset of the people of Kashmir. Now they are much more mature and can sense the plan of enemy nations and other extremist groups who again want to increase communal hate in India.

A Little known Terror outfit, The Resistance Front(TRF) has claimed responsibility for the killings. It was set up by former HizbulMujahideen leader Muhammad Abbas Sheikh.

DGP of Jammu-Kashmir, Dillan Singh told the media that, Majority of killing is done by pistol and the “weapons were brought in using drones from the other side of the border.”

According to reports, TRF circulated messages through telegram using VPN which are full of communal hate and also to kill those people who are outsiders or minorities and also the native Kashmiris who try to help them. IG Police of JammuKashmir said, “Due to killings of a huge number of terrorists, especially their leaders, terrorist handlers have started targeting unarmed policemen, innocent civilians, politicians and now innocent civilians from minority communities including women.” According to him, in some cases, “over ground workers (OWGs) were also found to be involved.” He added, “ The police are identifying all such parttime or hybrid terrorists and strict action will be taken against them.”

According to the data given by J&K Police, in 2021 a total of 30 Civilians of Kashmir have been killed by terrorists till now.

Not only this, many security forces were martyred. Also, 14 terrorists were killed by Indian security forces after civilian killings including some big ones.But this time it is hard to locate them because the killings now are done by the hybrid local terrorist.

They are killing civilians with small weapons and silently hiding among common people and living like them. So this time forces are facing some difficulties in tracking them.

There are many known as well as hidden causes behind the sudden rise in the killings of civilians in the last few months.

This is a serious issue and there is not a particular reason behind these killings but many other direct or indirect reasons too.

Now is high time to see such incidents from a bird's eye view and in greater detail.

Here we will discuss the extremist parties and enemy nations, who want instability in Kashmir valley, and also about some strict policies of the government giving those elements of society a chance to misguide the angry Kashmiris who are currently feeling suppressed. Ethnic and religious identity has always been a big issue in the valley for the past few decades. The recent government policies for the resettlement of Pandits may have triggered the attack to increase the communal difference and to alienate the valley from the rest of India on a religious basis.

Next is the strict and failed central government policies on the people of Jammu-Kashmir. After the revocation of Article 370, the longest internet shutdown has been seen.

Foremost, we need to know what actually the word hunger implies?

The actual meaning of hunger for the majority of people around the world is that it is a persistent state of physical and psychological harm caused by a lack of nutrition and mainly by a lack of economic resources. Poor economic conditions are one of the causes as well as a consequence of hunger because countries with lots of hunger tend to do poorly with the economy. Therefore, it is a cycle, where poor economic conditions cause hunger. Hunger, in return, causes poor economic conditions, making this cycle move in a circle.

Furthermore, we know that millions of people are starving despite the world producing more than enough to feed everyone. We should minimize food losses during production and transport and should ensure universal access to nutritious food. By following these steps, we can surely achieve zero hunger, as they will help to end all the rural poverty by increasing the income of the small-scale producers. Therefore to achieve zero hunger and to see that by 2032 nobody lives in extreme poverty, we need to make our country a place where everyone can fulfill their basic need, i.e., food and where no one loses their lives because of hunger.

The day hunger disappears, the world will see the greatest spiritual explosion humanity has ever seen.

ALGORITHMIC DECLINE OF HUMANITY - How the tech rose above the ones who created it On 29 June 2007, Apple introduced its first mobile phone called iPhone. Steve Jobs, while introducing it to the crowd that gathered in California Apple Headquarters, said out loud “Today, Apple is going to reinvent the phone.”

And today when I sit down to write this article, I can clearly state Steve wasn’t wrong.

The iPhone marked the era in history when people in America literally eroded their sleep to get in line to get a phone. Along with various other trends, the one that stood out most was that the tech industry focused on making the devices more personalised. Now in later iterations of the mobile device, windows pc, it’s almost impossible to set up multiple accounts that could enable the technology to be shared with others.

If you ask someone, the one thing that they never forget to carry with them is their mobile.

The mobile is now the epicentre of people’s attention in the 21st Century, ripping apart communities in a way that one could never imagine.

Going back to the history of mobile communications, along with Apple came various other companies - the ones that challenged the iPhone versus the ones that took advantage of the cultural phenomenon.

Google bought the Android Project on July 11, 2005, wanting to capitalise on the project with its ad business. However, the dream was realised much later. Facebook, the social media giant launched its mobile app on iOS on 10 July 2008.

The thing here is to say that the morals of the launch were quite idealistic. Every company branded itself with some unique mission to say humanity. From Google’s ‘Don’t be evil’ to Facebook’s ‘Connecting people’. Amazon was just being the a-to-z delivering around the globe. The mission was to raise the standard of human life through technology.

These Silicon Valley start-ups promised the future to the world that one couldn’t have ever imagined. The stocks of these companies grew to the point that they existed to merely be startups. Their owners went on to become some of the richest on the planet.

Everyone just loved them so much.

However what started with promising to accelerate humanity just managed to somehow decelerate it at a high pace. Many factors could be attributed to it but something that encompasses it all is the use of Algorithms.

From Facebook to Google to Amazon to Apple to any tech company on the planet, they just want to make the user stick to their device or service as long as they can. The more a person engages and puts the eyeball, the richer these companies get. The Fancy word for this type of capitalism used by western media is “Attention Economy”.

Investment(destruction) of one’s time is another's money.

How did we reach a place where to survive the tech companies necessarily have to make someone less human, by pulling all of his or her attention towards oneself? In moral terms that definitely amounts to being evil and disconnecting people. Both of which are the reverse of what Tech promised.

I hate to say that but what keeps digital technology alive is what essentially makes it worse. Statistics are used to know how people use the service e.g. where the person clicks a new feature, how much time someone spends on a post, which colour button is more attractive, etc. These calculations help generate a lot of data about human behaviour.

Then this data is studied and the important outcomes are drawn. After this, a set of calculations is drawn which automatically suggest the user more engaging content.

These sets of calculations essentially constitute Algorithms. And Algorithms get better with time as this set of learning and executing continues.

From suggesting the next fancy dance video to the most appropriate search result, all is done with the help of Algorithms. The tech companies use them to make new products that are very engaging. Apple uses it to make what people want, Facebook uses it to show new posts, Google for search and ad targeting, and Amazon for showing you the best product.

THIS IS WHERE THE MAJOR PROBLEM COMES.

Now you would ask, what was the use of Apple’s story? Apple is a company that makes technology consumer-centric. Rather than being in the hands of a few elites, it could be used by the masses and then set the trend for other companies to follow. Plus it made products that were ‘i’ focused. That is to say that consumer tech in itself started with the segregating factor which however was realised much later.

Now with over half the human population online, billions of phones sold, and around 3 billion people online, recent news events suggest things other than morals.

A survey conducted by Microsoft revealed that now in the digital age, the attention span of humans is way reduced, even less than that of Goldfish which is 6 seconds.

Numerous surveys that have been conducted reveal devastating effects on humans.

Instagram has been found to increase suicidal thoughts in teenage girls. Facebook has been pivotal in destroying offline interpersonal connections and increasing online ones.

Google’s algorithms are way stronger now from where you start browsing to where you end, it’s a rabbit hole of information.

Pornography consumption has increased.

Increased Anxieties among youth have been reported. Political Propaganda has been a constant source of information on social media, which is in itself full of misinformation. The effect of echo is much higher on the internet which keeps a person locked to the rigidity of thoughts, diminishing any headroom for discussions.

These technologies when started were very promising in terms of bringing a change that would change the course of humanity. They were free to anyone while the company earned from showing people ads. However, that ad business blasted the morals of humanity, to show more ads than the appropriate content based on user choice.

Without any penny to pay, people thought the web to be a charity helper. But these companies tricked people into being junkheads rather than being informative.

Facebook whistleblower France Haugen said it is easier to incite anger and violence than to incite harmony, hence algorithms curated content accordingly on the service, which made it more profitable.

With the use of algorithms, Technology is becoming better at being Technology, rather than helping humans to be better humans.

Now as I see around the society, there is intolerance among people, people are fighting over petty issues, sending brutal warnings and rape threats to random people on Twitter and Facebook behind the veil of anonymity. And what algorithms are doing is not hiding or reducing those things, instead such content is top-ranked and served to consumers to increase engagement.

Algorithms have broken society, they need to be tweaked. One might argue that it is the backbone of these services and without these those companies might suffer loss. But what would be a world where people fight 24*7 with everyone having some viewpoint which is so right that others should listen but no one is there to listen. In the end, there's a much higher probability of such things entering into the physical world and these arguments taking a much larger shape than needed. Numerous examples have shown that it is possible.

Instead of having technological advancements let’s unite for human advancement, which is with or without these companies, because in the end what matters is to be a human.

Though patriarchy credits power to the male section of society, it can also hurt men in many ways.

They are always under constant scrutiny of the stereotyped masculinity and an ideal image that patriarchy has fabricated for them.

Toxic masculinity refers to this stereotyped manly identity that attributes strict masculinity norms to men.

“Man up” “Be a man enough” “Men will be men” If you ever thought that something is wrong with these phrases, then you already have an idea about toxic masculinity. And if you have never considered these common phrases to be oily, then you are either a victim or a practitioner of toxic masculinity.

The term has been here forever but unacknowledged. It got wind in 2019 but the discussion never caught fire.

Toxic Masculinity is a byproduct of Patriarchy.

Patriarchal doctrines are a social framework wherein a man is considered as the superior sex. He holds essential force and prevalence in matters of political administration, moral position, social benefit, and control of the property.

Patriarchy is always studied for oppressing females, but what has remained an unpopular opinion over the years is the effect that patriarchy has on men.

At a wider stance, it affects men in three ways 1. It mocks men for being emotionally vulnerable. (“boys, don’t cry”/ “stop crying like a girl”) 2. Encouraging men to be aggressive, violent, or tough. (“Act like a man”) 3. An ideal body - broad, muscled, or heavy.

(Thin or no facial hairs = “you look like a girl”) The manliest of the men is the one who is either a leader of a pack or broody and well-built.

Society is harsh in its treatment of the men who don’t play along with these predefined norms of masculinity. They are treated as an “other” amongst men and often mocked by both genders.

The psychological and social impacts that these stereotypes can have on the lives of men are tremendous. They often fall prey to a superiority complex and an obsession with control or dominance. Failure in meeting these social prejudices causes inferiority and insecurity.

Emotional distance is the most common consequence of toxic masculinity.

According to an article published on “high focus centers” in 2019, statistics have revealed that men are more likely to indulge in substance abuse than women. The primary reason was found to be societal expectations of masculinity.

It is saddening that even after decades of awareness regarding gender stereotypes, this issue is still underestimated and overlooked.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING According to United Nations, Human Trafficking means the recruitment, transport, or transfer of people by improper means for improper purposes including forced labour and sexual exploitation.

There is an estimate that around 25 million to 45 million people are trapped in this slavery, also called "Modern-day slavery".

False promises are ways in which traffickers bait and enslave their victims – both adults and minors. Indigenous populations and those who live in abject poverty are typically economically and politically marginalised.

Thus most lack rights and access to basic human rights such as education, which make them particularly vulnerable to sex trafficking.

Human trafficking is the most hideous crime which is prevailing in our country.

Rajasthan, Delhi, and Haryana are the most common places for these sorts of crimes.

Children and women are transported from here to different countries like Bangladesh, Myanmar, and many more.

According to NCRB data; last year in 2020, almost 1200 cases were filed by the government against human trafficking.

In our constitution, Article 23, prohibit human trafficking. Protection of children from sexual offenses act 2012, which protects children from sexual abuse.

The government has taken steps but not in a wider concept. They do legislate the laws but the execution is inefficient. In these concepts, the government can make strict laws and should not treat victims as criminals, which is very important. Also, safeguarding the victim is a pivotal role.

The government may also make strict laws against child labour as many laws have been implemented but are not maintained properly because there is no fear left. Absolute transparency plays a crucial role in the government's ends.

Media is a very important medium for this but due to the involvement of big leaders, the voice of media gets obsolete.

In the end, this can be stopped but only when every individual understands what is right and wrong, and not everything is meant for money.

COVID 19: AN ESCAPE OR THE END? Declared a pandemic by WHO, coronavirus disease has undoubtedly created havoc at global level. Many countries were under a state of lockdown in the last one and a half years. Smallest living creature, a microorganism which is roughly 0.1 micrometer small has tremendously shaken the entire world by reaching acme.

Perhaps, the generation living in the twentyfirst century has never imagined that this would happen someday but since we know “something absolutely unexpected is always the most likely to occur”, and in recent times, it has. Medical reports claim that immunity plays a vital role in the therapeutic process of COVID-19.

However, there were people who recovered at the age of ninety-nine and there are those too who died of it at the age of thirty-six.

So, is immunity the ultimate causative factor for cure?

Probably not. To a much larger extent, it is, but not wholly.Just like the immune response, psychology of a being is also a factor where the will and the approach to the disease play their roles significantly.

Therefore, this proves that the human race is still omnipotent. We are so powerful from our bodily metabolism as well as from our scientific reasoning ability, yet we are being the victims of this malady.

So, is there something still lacking in us? Are we yet not fighting with the disease effectively? Well, the answer is ‘YES’. We surely can, but we aren’t. By being aware, cooperative and optimistic, we can get rid of this absolute menace. Instead of roaming around, we must stay at our homes, spend time with our family and avoid social interaction. This doesn’t even cost a penny but effort and cooperation. Instead of panicking, if we follow the advised measures properly and approach this entire scenario in a different way, we can definitely cope with this.

If we look back into the time when COVID-19 wasn’t there in the picture, where do we see ourselves?

Gulping nachos at some fancy restaurant or littering on footpaths or ceaselessly playing games on our mobile phones or taking our work and those laughs and giggles with our friends for granted?

Indeed COVID-19 has brought disaster, demise and scourge but it has also brought the realisation to us about the impermanence of life and no matter how far one can go, home is always the safest.

This pandemic has alarmed us of all the wrongs we have done to our mother nature when we were free to roam. This has alarmed us of the pressing need of our escape from the virtual world and embrace the reality. This has alarmed us to understand the value of each and every person in our lives and a need to acknowledge them for being ever present.

COVID-19 can not be the end rather it can be our escape from falsehood and meanness, if we want to. It is high time and we have to look upon it. We created this, now we’ll overcome it. We can and we definitely will!

Psychology is very important in the lives of different individuals and communities. At the origin of psychological studies, psychology is concerned with the treatment and understanding of human behaviour. It attempts to bring about the required change and modification of this behaviour.

Picture Courtesy- Late Danish Siddiqui India is an example of a developing country that has been experiencing the rapid urbanisation flow from rural to urban regions crossing geographical boundaries as well as social inequalities.

The migrant workers are the backbone of several sectors in the country, despite their low wages.

Migration from one area to another in search of improved livelihood is a key feature of human history. Though the world had not witnessed the biggest migration or to be specific Reverse Migration when the migrant workers of rural India who worked in the Urban cities had to return to their homes back. Back to poverty, agony, insecurity, humiliation, and struggle to survive.

According to the World Economic Situation and Prospects as of mid-2021, this global crisis has “clearly worsened poverty and withincountry inequality”, and it is expected that it “will leave long-lasting scars on labour markets, while reversing progress on poverty and income inequality in many economies.

The Coronavirus pandemic has induced a huge economic crisis. The norms of social distancing and consequent lockdown to flatten the curve of this infection has brought economic activity across the globe to a standstill. A mass exodus of workers from major urban centres of India to their native villages started. Mental, financial and emotional agony inflicted due to job loss, lack of job, and livelihood opportunities led to this.

With the number of coronavirus cases in India on the rise, the lockdown had been extended four times during 2020. Early lockdown announced by the Government of India helped slow the spread of the infection in the country. However, it has raised issues of escalating inequalities and susceptibilities of marginalised communities within the country. The migrant workers majorly were from states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Orissa, Chhattisgarh and they migrated from metropolitan cities of India including the capital, New Delhi.

The workers migrated with loss of income, food shortages, and uncertainty about their future life. And many still are unemployed after Lockdown. As India started to unlock the situation has evolved gradually.

Some Workers migrated back to the city, some were not called back to work, and some had still not found work to migrate.

This lockdown and its subsequent extensions, has resulted in disrupting the life of all. The lockdown caused the confinement of millions of citizens in their homes, but to be confined in a warm home with a full refrigerator, we cannot complain of anything else.

To be healthy and safe sounded privileged.

The struggle of migrant workers who walked barefoot around the states of India in heat and dust puts questions on the desk. Why migrate? What about the loss of human life?

Maa drapes around her a saree a green saree So ripe and fresh in its color Baba had brought it for her from a shop he found next to the dargah It was the night of diwali the diyas burning sapphire - tangerine Maa adorns herself with emeralds in laudation to her amber silk weaved by the hands of the community in lallapura, banaras a community predominantly so accustomed to being labelled with the color green amidst the painted shades of saffron a culture so strong that it makes my eyes burn and heart yearns for a run to the paradise, the jannat, the swarg my Maa tells me about She tells me of how her love for the color green stems from its glistening beauty of how the color so pure is also the color of the oxygen I breathe She breathes Maa loves devoting a Carmine dupatta to her goddess The Durga and the Kali on the festive days she adds bangles so green She says it makes a woman complete But Maa, why do you hate it when the media associates your favorite color to an entire community?

Why do you hate it when you see the streets green?

Do you not notice the trees? or your kurta so glistening in the morning sun?

You say green is your color of compliance Sapphire your calm Ruby to keep yourself complete and Saffron to mark your virtue

Maa, if the colors you chose never made you feel otherwise then Maa, why do you let the world dictate it to you now?

I remember how you have always told me that there’s no boundary to what shades so divergent, so contrasting So far alike can make you feel

they do not choose what to make you feel It is you, it will always be you who decides on what to feel

The colors, my child Never settled out, never committed themselves to a single caste, community or race It was the same pastel shades of the tricolor the same names It was always us pre-determining them.

I will always remember this Maa of how you still love your handwoven silk saree and your wedding’s cherry dupatta and how you never felt complete on festivities without having a touch of all the red, the blue, the orange and the green.
