Summer Service You are in the midst of your summer activities by now but don’t forget to do some volunteering too! Find ways to continue contributing to your community throughout the summer whether that be personal projects or pre-organized events with friends and Key Clubbers.

To the board members: I highly encourage you all to promote summer volunteering activities to your club members and try to organize at least one volunteering event.

If you don’t think your club will have enough people interested, contact me and I can invite the other CPS Key Clubs to join your club’s activity.

ICON Virtual The 2022 Key Club International Convention (ICON) in Washington, D.C. will be from July 6th through 10th. Although registration for the in person ICON has already passed, register for the online event! It is only $25 and includes select live streamed workshops and main sessions. This is an excellent alternative to the in person event, all at the comfort of your own home.

Global Leadership Certificate Interested in courses focused on

The Global Leadership Certificate includes a wide variety of self paced courses, each specific to a particular topic. Each course includes videos, assessments, resources, and activities. After completing all of the courses, you will get a certificate.

To participate in the wonderful opportunity, no registration is required for already registered Key Club members. To access the courses, go to: https://members.kiwanis.org/SignIn/Index? returnUrl=https://reporting.kiwanisone.org:443/Account/ResolveFederatedToken?returnUrl=%252F&instant=True.

You would have a sign-in specific to yourself. If you do not, ask the person that manages your membership update center. If you can’t get this to work, reach out to me and we will figure it out together!

June Board Recap I attended the Key Club June Board meeting from June 3rd to June 5th at Oakbrook.

Many of the LTGs from the other Divisions (areas in Illinois-Eastern Iowa) were there, along with the District Board and the adult Kiwanis advisors. Kiwanis is the adult version of Key Club and oversees Key Club.

committees which were really interesting and different from my own. Everybody

discussed their ideas with the committees and gained a deeper understanding into what else was happening behind the scenes at the District level. Best of all, I met many of the people physically in person, all of which I had only interacted with online prior.

Getting to know other LTGs was quite exciting. But, it also took me a bit of time to get used to because there were so many new faces.

The

most memorable event was the Parliamentary Procedure. Most people were not

sure what was going on and mistakes were made frequently. But, this made it fun because it was a learning experience for everyone. Additionally, one of the topics we discussed and voted on was in regards to the color of the Key Club crew neck that the District board was getting so some of the LTGs had very creative arguments in favor or opposition to a particular color. The discussion on color went on for a long time so it only became increasingly funny because at the end of the day, the color of the crew neck was not a major issue.

From the June Board, my

largest takeaways were how to start new clubs, the

importance of reaching out to Kiwanis Clubs for support, and the Youth Opportunities Fund. If you know of any CPS high school or elementary school that would benefit from a service oriented club, please let me know! We can work together to jump start the new club. As for Kiwanis Clubs, they are resources that aren’t well used. Adults enjoy seeing young people making change and may physically or financially support Key Club members or clubs in general. The Youth Opportunities Fund is a great way for clubs to start a volunteering project that requires funding. Many clubs do not know about this opportunity so all you need is a creative effective idea and the willingness to do the project.
