2019 ANNUAL REPORT LEAD BY DESIGN

25 YEARS OF COMMUNITY As we write this letter to commemorate the successful year our Association has had, the world is a profoundly different place than it was in 2019, the fiscal year summarized in this IIDA Annual Report. The ways we conduct business, communicate with clients and colleagues, and spend time with our friends and loved ones have been significantly altered. Notably, our changing world has inspired many of us to strengthen our definition of community, reevaluate what it means to be part of a system of support, and—perhaps most importantly— discover profound and meaningful ways to come together to honor and celebrate our accomplishments, goals, and collective journeys, with fervor and appreciation. Now more than ever, design—and the community that makes design possible—indeed does matter. For IIDA, reflecting on our achievements in 2019 is especially thought-provoking, as we celebrated our 25th year of advocating for and advancing the profession of interior design. In 1994, the founders of IIDA envisioned a relevant and inclusive organization dedicated to articulating the value of the professional practice of interior design. To them, we owe sincere gratitude for a legacy of design excellence. Now, in an era hallmarked by rapid change, economic irregularity, cultural shifts, and technological advancement, the ability of design and its practitioners to eternally remind us what it means to be human is essential. We know our role as an organization, a community, and professional network is to continue championing the humanity of design, uplifting the people who make design possible, and ensuring that design remains inclusionary and accessible. While this year’s annual report illustrates the fiscal, social, and organizational health that IIDA enjoyed in 2019, it also serves as a notable measure of your individual commitment to design excellence, your support of local chapter endeavors and initiatives, and perhaps most importantly, demonstrates the strength of the collective community of design. Looking forward, uniting our past and our future. . . IIDA is you. And we wholeheartedly thank you for your passion, your vitality, and your investment of time and energy in the work being done by IIDA and the design community, locally, nationally, and globally.

INDUSTRY EXPERTISE AND PROGRAMS IIDA holds programs throughout the year that highlight member expertise, such as the annual Industry Roundtable, a facilitated dialogue among interior designers, manufacturers, and clients. Industry Roundtable 22, held in January 2019, focused on the state of the modern workplace. The event resulted in an executive summary report, work | life decoded, offering an overview of how we live, work, and design. In 2019, IIDA embarked on a six-city tour with KI for a series of discussions on Community as Strategy, a major movement within the design and architecture industries focusing on creating environments that reflect and support community stakeholders. Each conversation was moderated by IIDA Executive Vice President and CEO Cheryl S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA, and featured panels of designers, architects, clients, educators, and urban planners. IIDA also teamed up with Agati Furniture to deliver a webinar series covering topics ranging from biophilic design to how seating and ergonomics affect our productivity. This provided unique access to the thought leadership and innovation of both IIDA and Agati, and our compatible visions for a more efficiently designed world. IIDA brought together 30 young and emerging designers for Converge, a design summit on sustainability presented with Interface. The event, which took place in Atlanta in late 2019, focused on design’s role in the future of our environment and how to better create a more sustainable industry for the future. IIDA also offered programming at multiple domestic trade shows and conferences in 2019, including NeoCon, HD Expo, GlobalShop, the Healthcare

10

Design Expo and Conference, International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF), and the International Design Conference (IDC). The Association continued to grow its global presence with the international Savor dinner series held in key markets such as Cincinnati, New York, Atlanta, San Francisco, Boston, and Milan during Milan Design Week; all dinners were hosted by Cheryl S. Durst and Royce Epstein, Industry IIDA, A&D design director for Mohawk Group. In a first-ever collaboration with AIA Chicago, IIDA hosted the sold-out “Designers and Architects Talk” series, a panel discussion at IIDA Headquarters addressing commercial interior design and architecture. Panelists engaged in provocative discussions about projects, firm leadership, and design strategy.

BENEFITING STUDENTS One of the most dynamic student/mentor programs in the industry, the 2019 IIDA Student Mentoring Program paired more than 1,000 students and mentors, allowing students to get out of the classroom and into the world of interior design. Student feedback from this experience continues to be overwhelmingly positive, with many making professional connections that ultimately result in ongoing mentorship, internships, and entry-level job offers. Students who participate in this program are eligible to submit an essay detailing their experience to the Wilsonart Essay Competition, which provides the winning student with $1,000 and roundtrip airfare and a two-night hotel stay in Chicago during NeoCon.

IIDA honored the winners of two inaugural scholarships this year at the 2019 IIDA Annual Meeting in June: the IA Interior Architects Diversity in Design Scholarship, established with an initial $50,000 donation from IA Interior Architects, and the John J. Nelson Sr. Scholarship, made possible through a donation by John Nelson, Sr. of $50,000. For the third year in a row, IIDA moderated a series of IIDA Student Roundtable discussions held in New York and Los Angeles in a published summary report. The accompanying summary report, (re) Designing Our Profession for Diversity, described the current state of leadership, diversity, and equity within interior design. The roundtables, hosted by OFS, brought together design students and practitioners to discuss the preparedness of emerging professionals to take on the ever-changing challenges of the design industry. The ninth annual IIDA Student Design Competition, sponsored by OFS, celebrates the talent of interior design students worldwide and allows them to showcase their projects to professionals. In 2019, student participants were challenged to space plan and design an ambulatory surgery center for a physicians group specializing in gastroenterology, orthopedics, and urology in Charlotte, North Carolina.

which unites design students, educators, and professionals in an effort to guide students as they shift from their school careers to their professional careers.

PROFESSIONAL TOOLS IIDA is committed to providing exclusive services to its members that help reap financial and professional benefits. The second iteration of the IIDA Interior Design Compensation Report launched in March 2019 with an updated Compensation Calculator. The report analyzes salary and benefit information of those in the interior design industry, allowing leaders to make informed business and hiring decisions. It is a vital resource for design professionals across the career spectrum. The first-ever IIDA Index launched in November 2018, with the second iteration in August 2019. A one-of-a-kind research tool and accompanying member-only web interface, the Index measures the health and metrics of the interior design industry exclusively. This, along with the IIDA job board provides concise information and accessibility to both seasoned and emerging design professionals.

IIDA also held numerous student-centered events and panels, including “Everywhere Has a Why,” a talk at Western Carolina University on the global cultural impact of design; the Texas Tech career fair organized by the IIDA Texas Tech University Campus Center; and the annual IIDA Texas Oklahoma Chapter’s signature SHIFT Student Conference,

ADVOCACY IIDA continues to work with a variety of stakeholders, including ASID and interior design coalitions around the country, to advocate on behalf of the interior design industry at the state and federal level. We monitor many issues including professional regulation and the ability to practice, taxes on services, procurement opportunities, and ownership issues. We strive to provide strong content and resources for all designers to learn how to advocate and communicate with lawmakers. The fifth annual IIDA Advocacy Symposium, held in Boston, drew interior design advocates from around the country. The September 2019 Symposium featured keynote speaker Arline Isaacson of Isaacson Political Consulting, Thom Banks of CIDQ, several state legislators, and various IIDA chapter leaders. The event focused on real strategies to move the interior design profession forward through legislative and grassroots advocacy.

IIDA FOUNDATION The IIDA Foundation supported the interior design profession through multiple channels in 2019. A not-for-profit, 501c3, philanthropic organization, the IIDA Foundation has a primary mission to advance interior design through education, research, and knowledge. The Foundation’s initiatives include the 17th annual Designing for the Future Campaign, which raised nearly $20,000 in 2019 to support the NCIDQ Tuition Reimbursement Fund and the sponsorship of five IIDA Student members for an allexpense-paid trip to the 2020 IIDA Texas Oklahoma Chapter annual Student Conference, SHIFT. In addition, the Foundation oversees the NCIDQ Tuition Reimbursement Fund, which offers IIDA Associate members an opportunity to apply for financial assistance upon passing the NCIDQ

12

exam, and the Sustainable Design Education Fund, sponsored by Shaw, which provides IIDA Associate, Professional, and Student members who pass the LEED or WELL Accreditation Exam the opportunity to apply for tuition reimbursement. In 2019, 14 IIDA members received financial assistance for passing the NCIDQ exam and six IIDA members from five chapters received financial assistance for passing the LEED or WELL Accreditation Exam. As of December 2019, 179 IIDA members from 31 chapters received financial assistance for passing the NCIDQ exam and 59 IIDA members from 21 chapters received financial assistance for passing the exams. Six students also received scholarships from the IA Interior Architects Diversity in Design Scholarship Fund, established with an initial $50,000 donation from the firm IA Interior Architects. In addition, three students each received $10,000 scholarships from the John J. Nelson Scholarship Fund, established through a $50,000 donation from John J. Nelson, Sr., a founding principal of the firm NELSON. This scholarship fund was created to benefit and further the study of interior design and architecture by students of African American descent. In 2019, the Foundation presented two major interior design awards that champion equity and diversity in the interior design industry and the future of design. The IIDA Educator Diversity Award, in partnership with the Interior Design Educators Council Foundation, recognizes and celebrates an educator who is a representative of a diverse background and is making a significant contribution to interior design education The Anna Hernandez/ Luna Textiles Visionary Award recognizes a woman who owns a firm that specializes in interior design or product design.

Also administered through the IIDA Foundation, the Wilsonart Essay Competition invites IIDA Student members who participate in the IIDA Student Mentoring Program to submit an essay describing their mentorship experience of being mentored at an interior design firm. The winner of the Wilsonart Competition receives a $1,000 award. For all winners’ names, please see page 14 of this report.

IIDA IN THE NEWS As an international thought leader for the commercial design industry, IIDA, its leadership, and its members are often quoted, highlighted, and represented in a variety of publications, both online and in print. In addition to the many industry publications that regularly feature news and insights related to IIDA and its members, we found broadened public recognition in 2019 via noteworthy interviews with IIDA leadership on issues ranging from the need for diversity in the industry to how to succeed in interior design featured in The New York Times, Contract, Business of Home, Forbes, Interiors and Sources, Architectural Digest, and Interior Design.
