The new headquarters of Sonwil Logistics reflect the firm’s active culture, brand legacy, and ambitious future.

The solutions introduced a more progressive and collaborative approach to corporate working, while providing elements that align with the company’s values.

In a nod to their business in transportation and logistics, stacked shipping containers provide a bold statement for the featured stair. Inviting nodes to gather, play mini-golf, grab coffee, or host a lunch reflect the company spirit.

The thoughtful transformation further uncovers a new workflow and dynamic lighting in both directions and color was introduced throughout the open floor plates, communicating productivity updates in real-time.

Sonwil Logistics Corporate Headquarters Architectural Resources – Buffalo, NY

A design firm’s new workplace in the heart of Buffalo’s downtown empowers its creative teams to shape breakthrough solutions for clients. The space is a showcase destination for the firm and a hub for collaboration. The space offers wellness amenities including showers, bicycle storage and sit/stand desks for all. The diverse workplace allows staff to choose how and where they work to suit their personal needs.

A central cafe brings people together for work and socialization during the workday and can also host client and community events. The space also features an intelligent building experience system designed by the firm, that provides customizable lighting, temperature, ambient control, acoustic tuning and room scheduling that increase staff performance and comfort.

The annual 43 North competition invites entrepreneurs from around the world to compete for a monetary grand prize and the opportunity to accelerate their startups in this one of a kind incubator space. The elevator lobby shocks and stimulates on first impression with LEDs that dance around the black walls and ceiling to emphasize lights supremacy over the void of darkness. Light reveals itself as it passes through and reflects on prismatic forms, surfaces and finishes with acoustical ceiling treatments and a gradient carpet installation. The main lobby is back dropped by waterfront views from the high-rise. A desaturated take on the multi-purpose room ceiling is present above open workstations, while adjacent phone rooms provide quiet focus areas that understand the necessity for privacy in a co-working environment.

The 4th floor in the Koessler Administration Building at D’Youville called for a renovation into an open, modern office that includes meeting rooms, co-working spaces and private offices with natural light and views of the city.

This 150-year-old building brought challenges such as asbestos removal and upon demolition, large trusses were found that couldn’t be removed or buried in the walls. They now define space yet serve as a design feature that allows for light to pass through. The new design includes touch down meeting areas that act as coworking space and backlit clouds. Utilizing glass, neutral colors, and layering with different textures boasts a sophisticated aesthetic that will keep the space timeless.

Fourth Floor Presidential Suite Koessler Administration Building at D’Youville Silvestri Architects, PC – Buffalo, NY 12

At the height of the covid-19 pandemic, the design had to embrace CTG’s corporate values, brand, all while infusing a sense of safety in uncertain times. We developed a design that provided individual workstations with the adoption of higher workstation panels that incorporated glass, occupants were able to have their own personal zone, yet feel connected to others visually.

Our interior finishes adopted the colors provided for the new logo prior to its release to the company. We kept various neutral walls within the space to receive the new branding later while accent walls were placed purposefully in the open area as focal point. We incorporated their secondary color palette in the break room to make the space more vibrant and energetic.

This project converted a two-story garage space in Buffalo’s Cobblestone District into a ground floor bakery with a member’s only speakeasy above. The bakery is defined by distressed neutrals alongside classic forms and finishes, this rugged take on a boulangerie compliments the building’s industrial character. Sequential matching display cases disguise the speakeasy’s point of entry.

Patrons pass through this shrouded door where they begin their ascent towards the secret establishment. Jewel box pedestals highlight high-end bottles at both corners of a quartz bar, while eclectic furniture clusters interact with exposed structure, unpolished concrete floors and industrial windows. Moments of reflective brass and early electric fixtures give the venue a coveted jazz age charm.

Bakery 55 & Room 120 Carmina Wood Morris DPC – Buffalo, NY

The design for this upscale dining space, elegant bar and adjacent boutique hotel draws inspiration from Frank and Dolly Reikart. As retired vaudeville musicians, they became known as Amherst’s “first family of hospitality.

The highest impact features include vaulted wood ceilings, a feature wine wall, a crafted wood, glass and fabric privacy screen, a grand ballroom and a display kitchen. Solid wood millwork and trim ground the space which is contrasted by the theatrical flow of airy fabrics, modern floral motifs in the carpeting and ‘Tiffany-like, Art Nouveau ’ metal ornamentation. The stone wall behind the bar creates a textured backdrop features turn of the century artifacts in artfully lit alcoves. Lively paintings, décor and custom wallcoverings depict vaudeville performers, jazz music, and local landmarks.

Renovations allowed the facility to see new life, moving from a private communal residence for religious women to become one of the newest licensed elder care housing options in WNY. 24 memory care studios and 55 assisted living apartments were re-designed, and 20 new apartments were carved from the space. A major part of the renovation at this facility was to add and enhance community-oriented program spaces. The interiors were crafted to enhance the building’s transition from convent to active senior housing. The large community room was fit out for cooking demonstrations and crafting. The former parlor was converted to The Bistro, which can host gameday parties or casual meals and drinks, while the main dining room promotes socialization and wellness.

Fredonia Place of Williamsville Trautman Associates – Williamsville, NY

The Aspen H with Atrium is a 3,500 square foot Contemporary Craftsman home, boasting four bedrooms, 3-1/2 baths, an atrium level walkout, finished basement, and custom features. This home was featured in the 2021 Syracuse Parade of Homes. Unique design features include the contemporary wood accent wall in the dining room; custom ceiling features in the kitchen, living room, and owner’s suite; custom-built bookcases in the primary office; contemporary tube railings; atrium and mudroom with blended transitions between contemporary hex tiles and traditional oak wood floors; a luxurious owner’s bath; and a one-of-a-kind Fantastic Beasts inspired poker room.

As soon as you arrive at the house, the experience starts as you enter through the glass double doors. You immediately take in the view to the back yard, which sits on the 9th hole of a championship golf course through the full wall of windows. When it came to the interior design, we devised a neutral yet nuanced palette that defers to the home’s indoor-outdoor sightlines. We layered up the neutral palette with the use textures such as the thick woven area rug on the plank oak wood floor, the linen sectional and the cool metallic grey tile fireplace and the whimsical light fixtures. Even the kitchen’s all-white scheme plays with variations on texture, such as a matte and gloss tile backsplash and streamlined brass hardware.

Burt Residence CJS Architects – Private Residence

This renovation of a mid-century modern medical building includes transforming the building into a mixed-use facility with one and two-bedroom apartments. The interior aesthetic of the units celebrate the existing mid-century elements, such as the aluminum ribbon windows. The units are light filled and include neutral, birch resilient flooring, terrazzo patterned solid surface counters and glazed-patina tiles that celebrate the classic feel of this era. The lobby is anchored with granite wall cladding, a vertical wood slat screen wall and built-in bench. The unique bench’s wood was refinished, including new upholstery to bring it back to life and is echoed in the midcentury inspired light fixtures and a classic basketweave slate porcelain tile anchors the lobby.

1275 Delaware Carmina Wood Morris DPC – Buffalo, NY

The Forge on Broadway development is a mixed income, residential development with a focus on wellness. With an emphasis on active living, it creates a walkable community where residents have access to multiple playgrounds and green spaces. To bring the same green space feeling indoors, we designed a living green wall in the lobby, placed moss walls in the corridors, and used finishes that simulated the outdoors. Signage was strategically designed to encourage stair use or direct them to the fitness and outdoor green space. Additional graphics were also used to pay homage to The Buffalo Forge Company, an industrial manufacturer that had once been located on the site. The apartment units themselves were designed with an open concept and plenty of natural light.

This mult-family residential project sits on a site that has been empty for nearly fifty years. With views of the Rochester skyline and the green hills of the local range, the 100 residential unit building is within walking distance to so mcuch. A mix of one bedroom and two bedroom units, the building boasts a lounge complete with a fireplace, bar, exercise room, offices for the residents’ use. Our interior design inspiration for the building came from the history of the site which was the location of a former shoe factory built in 1900. At the turn of the century a local farmer ran a prominent pig farm in the neighborhood. You will see the influences in the graphics in the elevator lobbies and the curated whimsical artwork package throughout the amenity spaces.

Set in a densely populated, urban residential neighborhood, the ECMC stands as one of the busiest healthcare institutions in the region. Through a donation from Russell J. Salvatore, ECMC enlisted help to reimagine the hospital’s front entrance and create a new, light-filled entry pavilion. To contrast the mass of precast concrete panels, the design team envisioned a compounded, curved glass façade to elegantly bring more transparency and light. The entry pavilion greets visitors with a beautiful, cascading light sculpture over the main reception desk. This spectacular fixture conveys a “community living room” feel—a driving design goal expressed by the hospital.

Erie County Medical Center Lobby Addition CPL – Buffalo, NY 28

The new Sheppard Pratt Behavioral Health Hospital aims to alleviate challenges in its surrounding community and establish a new paragon for mental health design nationally. The hospital is designed to foster community and belonging for all while utilizing the surrounding nature. Interior courtyards and exterior pathways offer a variety of opportunities for patients, staff and visitors to connect with the nearby hills, hollows, creeks and wetlands while maintaining patient privacy and safety. All areas of the hospital flow seamlessly into one another and interior elements evoke the outside: ceiling elements imitate tree canopies, wood battens on the lobby wall conjure the image of a cluster of trees and more.

Sheppard Pratt Baltimore/Washington Behavioral Health Hospital CannonDesign – Baltimore, MD 29

This project was an interior renovation for a Women’s health medical group. The design took inspiration from the company’s logo and brand color. The palette was a blend of warm and cool neutrals. Contemporary styling and finish materials create an approachable, refined, sophisticated atmosphere. Soft muted woods, variegated stone, meet up with sleek stacked stone and bold accent color. The dynamic floor pattern and finishes help energize the corridors and transfers visual interest into the treatment rooms.

Catholic Health Carmina Wood Morris DPC – Buffalo, NY

The UBNS Comprehensive Neuroscience Center provides integrated neurosurgical services at a single facility for patient ease. By combining multiple satellite offices into a single state-of-the-art center, we were able to increase the efficiency for the end user and the level of patient care. By designing a lobby with two receptions, we were able to accommodate two uses of the space.

On the second floor, we used DIRTT walls to create multiple call centers and offices where employees could work in teams. Our atrium design features a waiting room on the second floor that overlooks the first floor waiting rooms to integrate the two floors. The finishes include warm neutrals, white decorative panels, glass walls and decorative maple wood features that provided a calm, yet timeless design.

HUNT has partnered with Horseheads Central School District for over 25 years, working with the district on capital improvement projects that span the entire campus. The Horseheads High School kitchen/cafeteria renovations centered around updating FF+E, mechanical systems, and reorganizing the space design to create more flexible seating options. The new high school library involved a large addition with a design focused on flexibility, organic finishes, and light. Skylights filter in daylight, while interior textures and colors highlight raw finishes like wood, concrete, and glass, with blue accents scattered throughout. The library furniture and space planning centered around flexible learning and studying environments.

Horseheads Central School – High School Cafeteria & Library HUNT – Horseheads, NY 35

The Cuba-Rushford CSD wanted to offer a robust Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) curriculum through two lab classrooms. By bridging academics and cognitive skills with hands-on learning, the district yearned to provide students with environments that could open doors to a variety of trades and career paths.

Technology infrastructure, flexible layout and program adaptability were the primary drivers. The inclusion of a garage-style door also offered connection between the classroom and nature, while providing natural ventilation.

Creating a metaphorical “hive” of activity was another driving theme that utilized hexagonal acoustical control panels, brightly colored accents and playful light fixtures.

Cuba-Rushford Central School District STEAM Classrooms CPL – Cuba, NY 36

At center of the campus, this building transforms a campus void into the world of cybersecurity. A space which blurs the line between education and reality, the Cybersecurity Range provides students with a realistic stage for problem-solving in a high-pressure environment.

Featuring custom millwork, AV theatrics, and virtual connectivity, this simulated learning environment creates a dynamic atmosphere which can be altered to intensify.

Binary coding is found throughout the design in literal and figurative usage, and is discoverable by inquisitive occupants. Lighting fixtures in three main corridors are arranged in eight-digit sequences spelling out one letter per floor as you move up through the building.

RIT Global Cybersecurity Institute Labella Associates – Henrietta, NY

The main objective of this project was to take the existing office space and transform it into a functional and modern work environment. The existing space created issues with acoustics, lack of natural light and air quality. A new, open floor plan enables occupants to work collaboratively while offices and conference rooms employ the use of glass to gain borrowed daylight from the new skylights. The three larger areas are identifiable by different color schemes.

Shared spaces are located between the three larger work areas and include meeting rooms, print rooms, phonebooths and conference rooms. Varying ceiling heights, changes in ceiling materials and a white noise system alleviate acoustic concerns.

Erie 1 BOCES Education Campus Office Renovation Young + Wright Architectural – West Seneca, NY 38

The recently completed Innovation Hub at The University at Buffalo reimagines the workplace and office environments in the Center of Excellence Bioinformatics Life Sciences as a thriving center of innovation and collaboration for new technology and life science companies. The Hub offers different and flexible settings that respond to working, researching, socializing, and learning. A series of engagement sessions informed every detail of the design, from the facility masterplan to the incorporation of hexagon themed interior detailing that reflects the “hive” identity at the core of the incubator’s mission. A welcoming two-story digital hive wall, that provides wayfinding and unique identity of the Hub, also serves as an illuminated beacon to the surrounding Medical Campus.

University at Buffalo Innovation Hub Architectural Resources – Buffalo, NY

The second floor of Trocaire College was transformed into the new Technology Institute and the atmosphere reflects these new academic programs in cyber security and data analytics with high-tech features and aesthetics.

The transformation began in the entry stairwell with a feature wall that includes a dimensional hexagonal theme, signage backlight with red LEDs. Using the college’s colors of red, black and white, the theme continues throughout the second floor. Each classroom offers versatility with reconfigurable furniture as well as color changing LED lighting for faculty to customize their class. Student and faculty “sandboxes” were created to encourage group collaboration and creativity.

Trocaire College Technology Institute Trautman Associates – Williamsville, NY

SBU selected a full-service firm to program, plan and design a 44,000 square foot facility for the institution’s growing School of Health Professions. The scope encompassed renovations and adaptive reuse for the school’s historic Saint Francis Hall building. Key design components included a simulation lab with adjacent debrief rooms that serve as 24-hour group study spaces; a physical diagnosis lab; a physical and occupational therapy space; associated classroom complements; and breakout rooms that can be utilized as offices or workspaces. The former chapel was also transformed into a vibrant, multipurpose collaborative zone that serves dually as an area for seminars and student hangouts.

St. Bonaventure University School of Health Professions CPL – Allegany, NY 41

The library underwent a full renovation and expansion, to create a multi-functional and adaptable learning environment that incorporates programs well beyond the traditional library, mirroring a student center. Webster’s program included the “Titan Tech Bar,” where students learn to fine-tune their tech skills while servicing student equipment. The space also features a student-run cafe and the school broadcasting studio. The space incorporates a functional classroom surrounded by moveable glass walls, allowing for separation during lessons as well as incorporation into the larger space.

Huddle rooms provide students an opportunity to put their ideas together in small groups.

Webster Thomas High School Media Center Labella Associates – Webster, NY 42

The culmination multi-phased project, SUNY Buffalo State’s new Science & Mathematics Complex advances the institution’s STEM goals for the future. Its latest and final phase adds 45,000 SF, complete with research labs, a greenhouse and planetarium. The three-story skylit atrium literally puts “science on display” where students can present projects in large display windows. The space is a geologic metaphor for the nearby Niagara Gorge.

The proportion and materiality of the atrium space, a tall vertical area with dappled light, utilizing stone as an interior finish. Throughout the space, underlying themes of science are brought to life via design such as Prism, Fibonacci Series and Golden Ratio, Chromosomes and DNA Fingerprinting.

ISTORIC ESTORATIO

The Silos at Elk Street is located amongst the Larkinville District and Old First Ward communities and was formerly one of many crumbling historical buildings in Buffalo. The objective of transforming the Kreiner Malting Co. building was to restore the building, house Young and Wright’s (YWA’s) office, with leasable space for other businesses and residential. An example of the preservation work is one of six 1600-gallon steeping tanks. The tank that was kept was converted into a “think tank,” in the office space used for meetings. Five circular ceiling clouds and floor accents create a design feature marking the location of where the removed tanks used to be. The goal is to use the machinery and equipment left in the building to educate the community about malt processing methods.

Silos at Elk Street Young + Wright Architectural – Buffalo, NY

The restoration of the Globe Woolen Mills involved multiple buildings built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As one of the most prominent woolen goods mill still extant in Utica, this project was historically significant and exemplifies the industrial architectural style of this era. The unit design is an updated traditional aesthetic through white, classic shaker-style cabinetry paired with matte black hardware, black granite counters and gloss white subway tile. Matte black light fixtures with polished chrome faucets provide a transitional loft look that supports the buildings historical character. Existing refinished hardwood runs throughout to lend unique industrial character to the common spaces. Basket weave tile patterns create visual texture that draws a connection back to the building’s textile roots.

The Schoharie County Public Safety Facility is a new 70-cell correctional facility funded through FEMA and built to replace the former building destroyed by flooding from Hurricane Irene. To reduce correctional staffing costs, the design team worked with the NYS Commission of Corrections to provide three unique, direct supervision housing units in lieu of the typical four units. The reduced building footprint required a thoughtful approach to space planning. Each housing unit features a large mural with a coordinating materials palette themed to the seasons as a calming and normalizing feature. The scenery mimics the landscape local to the County and provides a positive distraction, conducive to inmate rehabilitation.

Schoharie County Harvey E. Stoddard Public Safety Facility LaBella Associates– Schoharie, NY 51

In 2019, the Aquarium of Niagara set out to create a new interactive exhibit—one that would offer guests an unforgettable experience with a collection of marine life, including sharks, stingrays, hermit crabs, sea urchins, and more. Solutions included the utilization of circadian lighting design, which mimics the natural day/night light cycles these unique, often endangered, animals are accustomed to. With glass “portholes” offering guests an exciting, rare look below the surface, the exhibit was designed to look like a true Florida mangrove. Strategic interior selections also included art and graphics highlighting each species’ role in a healthy ocean ecosystem and the importance of conserving essential coastal habitats.

Aquarium of Niagara, M&T Bank Shark and Ray Bay (Explorer’s Reef) CPL - Niagara Falls, NY 52

The Neighborhood Clubhouse, serving a large apartment community, is a collection of third spaces designed to encourage neighborly gathering, promote pride of place, and provide a safe space to work, learn, and socialize outside the apartment. The Scandinavian influenced, biophilic design approach is carried through all aspects of design from building form and fenestration pattern to interior layout and design, material application, and furniture selection. The use of a nature inspired color and material palette, the abundance of natural light, physical and visual connection to the outside, and use of plants and green walls throughout, creates a comfortable space, which appeals to a multi-generational community.

Neighborhood Clubhouse – A New Concept in Apartment Community Living Kelly Jahn Interior Architect – Rochester, NY 53

A portion of a long-abandoned mall was converted into a community center. Design solutions include acoustical wallcovering, a wood acoustical perimeter, skylight window film to reduce glare, and wall-mounted lighting to illuminate the space. The aesthetic blends recreation and hospitality.

High ceilings and light-colored walls provide a bright and inviting environment. Natural wood and stone elements provide warmth and comfort. Expansive interior views are achieved through an open floorplan, glass partitions, and transparent and translucent openings. The team engaged local photographers to submit photographs that celebrate the Town’s landscape and history.

Irondequoit Community Center SWBR – Irondequoit, NY

The D’Youville Health Professions Hub is a breakthrough community agent that brings needed health, education, public art and other key resources to Buffalo’s West Side, a community that is both underserved and remarkably diverse. The center features innovative learning spaces, a workforce center, extensive virtual training resources, a clinic, rehabilitation medicine, nutrition, pharmacy and more. The atrium serves as a “main street,” while interior glazing, strategic operable windows and openings, and extensive use of glass maximizes views and daylighting. The central atrium with feature stairs supports cross-disciplinary education acting to unite students from different health professions to learn, connect and collaborate.

The blending of traditional customs with contemporary views inspired the redesign of the Armani Hotel. Guiding this idea is the long-established use of henna that originated in 800 CE in and more recently, there has been a growing movement in Dubai to create contemporary yet minimal designs with henna. The redesign of the Armani Hotel located within the Burj Khalifa will feature custom tile work throughout the space with an eye towards minimal patterns. The color palette is inspired by the typical stains of henna, specifically hues of tan and terracotta with green and gold accents. Luxurious yet tranquil features in the hotel include a large glass sculpture upon entry, a nail and henna salon, a prayer room, and amenities for guests of the suites.

Armani Hotel Dubai Villa Maria College Student – Emmalee Lowe

Given the shell and required restrictions, the objective was to create a luxury retail flagship store. I chose Alexander McQueen as I found his designs to be edgy, bold, and heavily nature-inspired, often pulling from butterflies and moths. The floor plan itself is inspired by the patterning of moth wings, with the “eyes” being the core scenes. As one enters, they are greeted with a staircase and then travel through the space to encounter collection rooms. Each collection room houses an informative pillar, as well as moths whose colors and patterns correlate with the pieces.

The mannequins displaying the collection are made of glass and emit a glow, drawing the customer in, like a moth to a light.

Alexander McQueen Flagship Store Buffalo State College Student – Alice Edgington

The project objective was to take customers on a journey, tell a story, promote a brand, and sell products. Our class participated in a workshop through the Center for Engaged Storycraft at RIT, to develop a creative writing piece, intended to convey the customer experience and brand story, as it related to the architecture and retail environment. Our team chose The North Face as our brand and a collaboration with local artists, Wall\Therapy, as it would be a good connection for the city of Rochester.

We explored the similarities and differences between the urban and natural environments that these associations represent. Additionally with the goal of showcasing creative individuals within the city.

The inspiration for the design of The Armani Hotel stemmed from the spinning wheel; an early machine used for turning fibers into thread and yarn. Incorporating line, shape, form, and texture allowed the design to display movement, harmony, balance, and scale throughout the spaces. In the atrium, guests are greeted with a custom fabric installation. After passing the atrium there are two gallery spaces, the first space pays homage to the textile from the past while the second space honor the textiles in the present, the gold strip detail that is seen in both galleries is a unique way to incorporate wayfinding within the spaces. Once they are finished for the day, they can enjoy the views of Dubai from their hotel room.

All Curves Women’s Clinic provides a comforting environment for the examination and treatment of women.

Inspiring the design of the clinic is the body positivity movement, an initiative that celebrates women of all shapes and sizes, regardless of their figure and redefining societal standards. The design features fluid shapes and organic geometry referencing the curves of a woman’s figure throughout different stages of life. Respect for women is established within undulating walls, curving furniture, and a color palette inspired by skin tones: cream, rosy, brown, and olive. A multi-purpose outreach space is depicted as a classroom, as well as a stressrelieving and celebratory belly dancing studio. All Curves offers its patient’s a inviting space that is comfortable to all women.

The task for this project was to design a retail pavilion with an interactive customer experience dedicated to Under Armour. The branded interior will serve the community of Rochester as a multi-functional space for retail, exhibition, and an exterior space for community use. The outdoor space includes a skateboard ramp that can be converted to an entertainment space, a small basketball court, and a practice putting green creating a community for all athletes no matter their level. A distinctive feature of the interior space is the exhibition area that showcases pro-athletes who got their start in Rochester. The space serves as an inspiration for younger athletes and expands on our brand concept of “Where it All Began.”

Historically, some believed that emeralds represented fertility and rebirth while today, others believe they have a soothing energy that promotes vitality. Additionally, the emerald stone embodies patience and compassion which inspired the design of this women’s health and imaging center. These attributes are emphasized by the inclusive and welcoming atmosphere of the space.

The clinic avoids highly feminine themes which ensures every patient will feel comfortable and accepted. The use of deep green throughout each room will help calm the minds of the patients at every stage of their visit. The rich and vibrant color of the emerald is balanced by light toned woods and metallic finishes.
