OKLAHOMA CITY CITY CENTER IIDA Advocacy Symposium | Denver, CO Interior Designers gathered in droves, for the second annual IIDA Advocacy Symposium held in Denver Colorado. The Symposium is a three day event comprised of speakers, sessions and panel discussions focused on advocating for Interior Design. Attendees learn directly from individuals who have made strides for the profession as they revisit the gains, losses and lessons learned on the path to success. Oklahoma was well represented with a total of 4 designers from our great state: Jennifer Jones, Past Director of OKC City Center, Megan Humbolt Advocacy Chair of Tulsa City Center, Paige Fruits VP of Advocacy for TX/OK Chapter and Paige Sheller Advocacy Chair for OKC City Center. In total, 18 designers were present from the TX/OK Chapter with over 100 attendees from all over the United States and Canada. The broad range of individuals present for the conference resulted in stimulating break out sessions and table discussions from multiple vantage points.

The conference began with a legislator panel featuring Colorado lawmakers. The panel gave attendees insight on how to talk to legislators, when to talk to legislators and simply how to make a lasting impact. After opening the floor for Q&A there was a presentation on building code and recent changes to the IBC and ADA.

Attendees also gleaned information about other forms of grassroots advocacy, through a presentation from Mason Tvert, communication Director for the Marijuana Policy Project. Tvert spoke about the methods used to passing an unpopular law, starting with little money and even less support. His methods were extreme, but successful and involved using the media to garner support. Day two of the conference was all about tools to help Interior Design advocates achieve their goals. The day began with a presentation study about the economic impact of Interior Design. The economic information was broken down in a helpful one sheet document, by state, that can be shared with local legislators. IIDA Headquarters also rolled out new and helpful information which will be access on their website including an updated advocacy map and toolkit. http://advocacy.iida.org/#resources Finally, the conference was rounded out by Cheryl S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA, LEED AP, Executive Vice President and CEO of IIDA as she made closing remarks about the direction of our profession and successes to come.

1. Did you know that up to 4 CEU credits can be carried forward to the next registration period? That’s right! If by the end of this registration period (June 30, 2017) you have exceeded the 12 hours of HSW CEUs required, a maximum of 4 hours of HSW CEUs can be carried forward to the next registration period. How cool is that? 2. If you or anyone you know is planning to take the NCIDQ examinations in the Spring 2017, remember to apply with the State Board of Architects, Landscape Architects, and Registered Interior Designers before Dec. 1, 2016. Go to www.ok.gov/Architects, select “Forms / Applications” and there you will find the Interior Design Candidate Application. This is your first step. When completed, THEN apply with CIDQ.

OKLAHOMA CITY CITY CENTER Fall Design Social | An Event in Review IIDA's 2nd annual Fall Design Social had a wonderful turnout this year with almost 50 attendees. Designers, community members, and their families enjoyed this beautiful fall evening in the parking lot of our presenting sponsor, Office Interiors, which is located on Historic Film Row. It began with an art activity for all the kids! These wonderful masterpieces will be given to Focus on Home along with the children's decorative items that were donated. Wicked Hangry was on site serving burgers and grilled cheeses for dinner. Attendees viewed a fun presentation teaching them how Pixar films can inspire and teach us about interior design. The evening finished with a screening of Disney Pixar’s Up. We couldn't have done it without our special event sponsors, ISC Surfaces, Maharam, and USG. Congratulations to our raffle winners, Kennedy Epplin (Amanda Epplin’s daughter), Ralph Homesley, Daryl Perkins, Andrea Durbin, and Mandy Richey. They won prizes that were generously donated from Andy Alligators, Elevation Trampoline Park, and the Oklahoma Science Museum.
