From the President/CEO Drum Roll, Please: Introducing the BIGiOK Pathways to Learning

“The capacity to learn is a gift; the ability to learn is a skill; the willingness to learn is a choice.”

Happy Holidays, everyone!

It’s hard to believe we’re wrapping up 2025 — what a year it’s been!

As we look ahead, I could not be more excited about what’s coming in 2026. Over the past few years, we’ve seen our Education Program decline and, frankly, fall short of meeting the evolving needs of our members in today’s fast-changing educational environment. After extensive research and development, I’m thrilled to share that our Board of Directors has fully embraced a new and innovative approach — Big I Oklahoma’s “Pathways to Learning.”

A New Era of Learning

For more than 30 years, our education offerings centered around two main designations: Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) and Certified Insurance Service Representative (CISR). While these programs have served our industry well, member feedback made it clear — two paths are no longer enough. Pathways to Learning reflects the modern learner’s needs: dynamic, flexible, and customized. Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, training now adapts to individual goals and results. Through Competency Mapping, we can define exactly what each team member needs to know, ensuring consistent outcomes — even if everyone’s journey looks a little different.

Traditional classroom education can be rigid, time-consuming, and not always

relevant to niche areas of the insurance market. With the industry shifting rapidly toward digital solutions and remote work, this is the perfect time to evolve. Online, adaptive learning gives professionals flexibility, accessibility, and control — allowing them to learn on their own schedule, revisit materials as needed and apply their knowledge more effectively.

New Learning Options for Every Professional

We’re excited to introduce new education partners and programs designed to meet a wide range of professional goals:

The Institutes

Offering one of the most comprehensive online learning platforms in our industry, The Institutes provides a wealth of opportunities — from MicroCerts to the AAI and more than 31 professional designations!

A few examples include:

• Associate in Program Business (APB)

• Associate in Data Analytics (ADA)

• Associate in Insurance Accounting and Finance (AIAF)

• Associate in Surplus Lines Insurance (ASLI)

• Associate in Fidelity and Surety Bonding (AFSB)

• Associate in Insurance Management (AIM)

…and many more!

Our original specialty, Workers’ Comp has long served as the anchor line for our growing suite of commercial products. We distinguish our coverage by providing a host of value-added services before, during, and after a claim.

Highlights:

• CIC/CISR Waiver Program: Active CIC or CISR designees can apply earned hours toward the AAI program and, after completing specific bridge courses, achieve the AAI designation.

• Lifetime Designations: Once you earn your designation, it’s yours for life — no more annual renewal fees!

• Continue your journey by stacking designations and finding your own Pathway to Learning.

Accredited Insurance Lines

Professional (AILP)

This isn’t a beginner program — it’s an advanced, distinguished designation for professionals ready to deepen their expertise and elevate their careers.

The AILP focuses on:

• Mastering complex coverage concepts

• Enhancing client relationships

• Strengthening analytical and professional skills

Courses include: Commercial General Liability, Commercial Auto, Workers Compensation and Commercial Property.

The Road Ahead

You’ll be hearing a lot more about Big I Oklahoma’s Pathways to Learning in the coming months — and I can’t wait to see how it helps our members grow, adapt and thrive in this new era of professional development. Here’s to a bold and innovative 2026! As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions at denise.johnson@bigiok.com

P.S. Conference Sneak Peek

Mark your calendars for our Annual Conference in April at the Omni Hotel in Downtown OKC — we’ll be hosting an Insurance Commissioner Forum featuring candidates running for Insurance Commissioner. You definitely won’t want to miss it!

We All Need to Wear a ‘White Coat’

White coat? What in the world??? I’ll get back to that in a minute, but first let me introduce myself. I’m Scott Dull, chairman of BIGiOK. Along with my two brother partners, we are second-generation owners of Omega Insurance Agency in Choctaw. Our father and mother established the business, back then known as Dull Insurance, in 1963. A few M&As occurred through the years before the business was rebranded and renamed to Omega Insurance in 1984. Our folks retired in 1997 and sold to business to Russell, Dean and I.

2012. Even after that, he invited us into his home to take care of minor illnesses and for regular checkups. And get this; he wore a white coat.

That white coat signifies something: many years of hard work, study and practice. When Dr. Bill had his white coat on, he was all doctor – a true professional, extremely knowledgeable and all business. When off work and out of that white coat, he was just a regular guy. I was fortunate enough to see that side of him, as he was a client of mine.

Our clients need and expect this kind of service I speak of here. We all need to be wearing that ‘white coat’.”

Now what about that white coat? I’m talking about the lab coat doctors wore back in the day. Allow me to preface that story.

My family doctor when I was a kid was just that; a family doctor. He did it all. We called him Dr. Bill. He not only had his own practice for family care; he was also a surgeon. He’d be at the hospital from 6 to 8 a.m., in his clinic from 8:30 until midafternoon, then back to the hospital from then on, until all his patients were taken care of, no matter how long the day. He took care of me, my siblings and my parents. When I started my own family, he took care of me and my wife. He delivered all of three children and took care of their medical needs until he retired in

What does all this mean? Dr. Bill was a mentor to me. From my above reflections, he showed me that I could be a “regular guy” when not at work. But at work as a professional insurance agent, I better have my “white coat” on at all times, doing what’s best for my clients. That means being respectful, courteous and knowledgeable: a professional. Nothing more ethical than that. Thank you, Dr. Bill. We all have our specialties in this, our insurance industry. I couldn’t be prouder to be serving in this profession, as well as chairman of “The Big I”. Our clients need and expect this kind of service I speak of here. We all need to be wearing that “white coat”.

Evolving with Purpose: Protecting What Matters in a Time of Change

We all know our industry is evolving — bringing new opportunities alongside new challenges. In insurance, we’re fortunate to work within a field that remains essential. Every day, we have the privilege of advising and protecting coffee shops, landscapers, tech startups, families, factories and everything in-between. Nearly every business and household rely on the protection that insurance provides. To preserve that trust, we must stay true to our core purpose: doing everything in our power to protect the businesses and families we serve, ensuring they never find themselves without a helping hand.

Our industry, like so many others, is in a period of remarkable innovation. With the growing presence of AI — both in our own operations and in those of our clients — we’re entering a time of incredible potential. What I’d like to explore today is how we can embrace this progress to better serve our clients and communities, while preserving the personal connection that has always been at the heart of what we do.

The technology we have access to today can help us work smarter, faster and more efficiently than ever before. We can use AI and data-driven tools to identify coverage gaps, streamline communication and make sure our clients receive timely, accurate service. These innovations have the power to enhance the client experience and allow us to focus on what truly matters: building trust, relationships and understanding the unique needs of those we serve.

However, as we embrace these tools, it’s important to remember that technology should complement our relationships, not replace them. Insurance is — and always will be — a people business. The conversations we have, the empathy we show and the trust we earn cannot be automated. While AI can help us process information and manage tasks, it cannot replicate the reassurance of a human voice in a time of uncertainty or the guidance that comes from years of experience.

I encourage the new faces in our industry to approach this period of change with both curiosity and care. Strive to balance efficiency with empathy and use innovation as a tool to enhance how we serve others — not replace the human touch that defines our work. Commit to learning something new every day, and lead with kindness in every interaction. The future will always carry elements of both uncertainty and excitement, but it’s through that balance that growth occurs. It’s now up to the next generation of leaders to walk that line thoughtfully, embracing new ideas while honoring the values that built this industry. Our clients and communities depend on us, and there has never been a better time to be the steady, helping hand they can rely on.

Our mission remains the same: to protect, to advise and to be there when it matters most. The tools may change, but our purpose never will.

Weathering Every Season Together

As anyone from Oklahoma knows, our weather has a way of keeping us on our toes. From spring tornadoes to sizzling summers, from ice storms that test our patience to winds that seem to never quit – living and working here reminds us daily of the importance of preparation, adaptability and community.

That same spirit defines who we are as independent insurance agents. And it’s why I’m proud to serve as your national director representing Oklahoma within the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America, Inc. (IIABA) better known as the Big “I”.

brokers are equipped to face an everchanging insurance landscape.

As our national trade association, the Big “I” provides the tools, advocacy and resources that give independent agencies a sustainable competitive edge – helping us continue to deliver exceptional service and security to the families and businesses who depend on us.

Strength in Numbers

Since its founding in 1896, the Big “I” has grown into a federation uniting the national association and 51 independent state associations, each

“Just as Oklahomans prepare for whatever the skies may bring, the Big “I” exists to ensure that independent agents and brokers are equipped to face an ever-changing insurance landscape.”

This winter, as we reflect on another year, it’s a good time to reconnect with the organization that stands with us through every season and every storm.

Our Mission: A Steady Hand in Changing Conditions

Just as Oklahomans prepare for whatever the skies may bring, the Big “I” exists to ensure that independent agents and

led by dedicated executives, staff and volunteer agent leaders.

When an agency joins our Oklahoma association, it automatically becomes part of this national network – now nearly 25,000 independent agency locations strong. Together, we stand for the values that make our industry vital: choice, advocacy and trust.

Big “I” members represent multiple carriers and serve clients across every line of coverage – property, casualty, life, health and employee benefits – helping our communities prepare for life’s unpredictable weather, both literal and figurative.

Guided by Volunteer Leadership

The Big “I” is governed by an executive committee of seven elected members and one agent chair, along with a national board featuring one volunteer agent director from each state association.

This structure ensures that Oklahoma’s voice is heard at the national level, with leadership focused on effective advocacy, clear communication and unwavering support for independent

agents and brokers across the country.

A Legacy of Endurance

Our state knows something about endurance – and so does the Big “I.”

In 2021, the organization celebrated 125 years of service, continuing a legacy that began in 1896 with a handful of determined agents who wanted a unified voice. Since then, we’ve stood strong through wars, recessions, natural disasters and sweeping industry change.

From the landmark 1904 Yonkers case, which protected agents’ ownership of client expirations, to modern innovations like InsurBanc, Trusted Choice and expanded market access, the Big “I” has continually worked to safeguard the independence that defines us.

Looking Ahead

Oklahomans understand that weathering storms – both literal and professional – takes preparation, partnership and perseverance. Those same qualities have sustained our independent agency system for more than a century.

As your national director, I’m honored to represent Oklahoma’s independent agents within the Big “I” and to ensure that our state’s voice and values help shape the future of our profession.

So as winter settles in and we brace for whatever the next front brings, let’s also take pride in our shared strength – the kind that endures every season, every challenge and every change.

The Hidden Costs of “The Way We’ve Always Done It”

It starts with a phone call.

The owner of a mid-sized independent agency — we’ll call him Sam (names changed to protect the innocent) was at his desk long after everyone else had gone home. A claim had just come in that could trigger an E&O issue. The coverage was placed correctly, but the documentation wasn’t where it should have been. As Sam dug through files, he found himself asking a question he’d avoided for years: Why does running this agency feel so hard?

On the surface, everything looked fine. The agency was profitable, the staff loyal, and clients generally satisfied. But underneath, there were cracks:

• Processes that depended on the “way we’ve always done it.”

• Team members who were working hard but often at cross-purposes.

• Leaders stretched so thin they had little time for vision or strategy.

• A digital presence that didn’t reflect the agency’s strengths.

Sam didn’t need someone to tell him he was failing — he wasn’t. What he needed was a better way forward.

From Habit to High Performance

Sam’s story is not unique. Many agency owners are running good businesses, but they’ve grown comfortable with habits that limit performance. The truth is, good enough doesn’t have to be the standard.

At BIGiOK Consulting, we’ve seen agencies transform when they take a step back and intentionally optimize how they operate. That optimization looks different for every agency, but it often involves five key areas:

1. Strategic Clarity

A strong plan isn’t a binder that gathers dust on a shelf. It’s a living roadmap that helps owners and leaders make decisions with confidence. Strategic clarity keeps everyone — from principals to producers — rowing in the same direction.

2. Leadership Development

Agencies thrive when leaders at all levels are equipped to lead. Whether it’s coaching for an executive navigating growth or training for a new manager learning to motivate a team, strong leadership development creates ripple effects across the organization.

3. Operational Optimization

Bottlenecks and inefficiencies cost more than just time — they create risk. Streamlined processes reduce frustration and uncover hidden E&O exposures before they turn into costly mistakes. This is where many owners have their “wakeup call.” That missing documentation. The overlooked process gap. Those are the details that make the difference between a minor hiccup and a major liability.

4. Strengths-Based Teams

Every team has natural energy for getting work done, but too often that energy is wasted. By leveraging tools like the Kolbe A™ Index, leaders can align teams based on how people instinctively take action. The result? Less friction, fewer misunderstandings, and more productivity without adding staff.

5. Technology Alignment

From agency management systems to your website, technology should serve your business goals — not complicate them. A clear-eyed evaluation often reveals where tools are underutilized, outdated, or simply misaligned with the agency’s direction.

Why Now?

Some owners wait until there’s a crisis to act. But the reality is, the current environment is already pressing agencies to do things differently.

• The hard market is squeezing margins and increasing client expectations.

• Workforce dynamics are shifting — leaders must adapt to motivate and retain talent.

• Clients compare your digital experience not to other agencies, but to Amazon and Apple.

Waiting until “someday” isn’t an option. Agencies that thrive in the next five years will be those that step back, reassess, and realign now.

Custom Solutions, Real Results

One of the biggest misconceptions about consulting is that it’s a cookiecutter solution. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Some agencies come to us for a targeted engagement — maybe to streamline workflows or to build leadership strength around a single key player. Others choose a comprehensive engagement that evaluates strategy, operations, leadership, and technology together. In both cases, the work is customized to the agency’s size, goals, and growth stage.

The result isn’t a theoretical report — it’s actionable steps that move the agency forward. And in many cases, the improvements reduce liability exposure while increasing efficiency and profitability.

A Better Way Forward

Sam’s story ended differently than it began. Instead of reacting to the next issue, he and his leadership team made time to step back, look at their agency holistically, and build a roadmap. That roadmap became their filter for decisions, their guide for growth, and their safety net for reducing risk. Your agency deserves the same. Start the conversation. Whether you want to focus on one pressing issue or take a high-level, comprehensive look at your agency, BIGiOK Consulting can help you chart the best path forward.

Visit BIGiOK.com/consulting to learn more or reach out directly to me, Sara Bradshaw Ray, SVP of Strategic Initiatives, at Sara@BIGiOK.com. You can also complete this quick questionnaire to get the conversation started.

Don’t wait until you’re forced to change. Discover your better way now — and lead your agency forward with clarity, confidence, and purpose.

5 Signs It’s Time to Rethink Your Agency Operations

1. You’re making money, but you feel like you’re working harder than ever.

2. Your team spends more time fixing problems than serving clients.

3. Processes depend on “the way we’ve always done it” — and only one person knows how.

4. You’ve wondered more than once if a missed detail could create an E&O nightmare.

5. Your strategic plan is to sit on a shelf instead of guiding your decisions.

If you checked even one of these, it may be time to explore a better way forward.

Protect Your Biggest Investment

Our homes are often our biggest investments, and protecting them should be everyone’s priority. Making our homes stronger and safer prevents damage and saves money on our insurance premiums. Commissioners at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners have discussed and prioritized this issue, and we all agree that mitigation is key.

The Power of Mitigation

“Mitigation” means taking action before disaster strikes. It’s about strengthening your home so it can better withstand storms, fires or other damage. These

risks, which may also reduce your premiums.

• Using smart home technology and looking into leak sensors that shut off the water main can prevent major water damage, a top cause of insurance claims.

• Updating wiring and plumbing by replacing old systems helps prevent fires and leaks.

• Performing regular maintenance, cleaning gutters and removing dead trees help protect your home from future damage.

Oklahoma knows severe weather. From convective storms to tornadoes, our homes face tough conditions year after year.

improvements lower your risk of future losses, which helps keep insurance costs down.

I’ve put together some simple steps that every homeowner can take:

• Installing security systems, adding alarms, smart locks and monitored systems, can earn discounts of 5% to 20%.

• Upgrading your safety devices, such as smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and sprinkler systems, can lower fire

Depending on where you live, like Oklahoma, you can go even further:

• Upgrading to an impact-resistant roof protects your home from hail and high winds and may qualify you for a discount while helping you avoid expensive roof repairs.

• Using fire-resistant materials and keeping brush clear around your home can make a major difference in protecting it from high winds and approaching fires.

Glen Mulready State Insurance Commissioner

• Elevating utilities and adding proper flood openings can reduce flood losses and lower your flood insurance rates. Oklahoma knows severe weather. From convective storms to tornadoes, our homes face tough conditions year after year. That’s why the Oklahoma Insurance Department launched the Strengthen Oklahoma Homes Grant Program last April. This program helps homeowners replace their roofs with FORTIFIED roofs, which are built to keep the roof on and the rain out.

From the State Insurance Commissioner

Hundreds of Oklahomans have applied in the last six months, and we are completing projects across the state. Homeowners who install a FORTIFIED roof can save an average of $700 to $800 per year on their homeowners’ insurance. That’s real savings, knowing your home is safer and more secure.

A Stronger, Safer Oklahoma

Every Oklahoman can contribute to creating a safer, more resilient state. Investing in home mitigation today,

you protect your biggest asset, reduce future losses and help keep insurance costs reasonable for everyone.

For more than three decades, education has been part of BIGiOK’s DNA – from the week-long “education school” days in Norman to nationally respected designation programs that shaped careers across the state. But the way insurance professionals learn has changed. Classrooms gave way to laptops, rigid schedules to flexible modules, and single tracks to tailored pathways. Recognizing that shift, BIGiOK has reimagined its entire education approach – expanding choice, lowering cost and aligning offerings with how agencies actually work today.

I sat down with Denise Johnson, BIGiOK’s president & CEO, and Josh Reasnor, chief of staff & operations, to unpack what’s new, why it matters and what members can expect.

Honoring the Past, Building What’s Next

“BIGiOK’s been in the education game for 30-plus years,” Johnson says. “My dad talked about the old Norman insurance education school – agents stayed a week, took classes all day and knocked out their CE.”

Later, the National Alliance model took root. “For decades, you’d sit in a two-day class, take an exam and earn a respected designation. It worked – until the culture shifted.”

Members now expect online, on-demand and blended formats. “Fewer people want to sit in a room for two and a half days,” Johnson notes. “The old model became unsustainable. It was time to change.”

Reasnor says member feedback made the decision clear. “Our annual surveys consistently put CE at the top. PostCOVID, online learning surged, providers innovated fast and quality rose. With so many good options, it would be a miss not to broaden our portfolio.”

Mission First: More Choice, Real Savings

As a not-for-profit, BIGiOK sought partners who share its purpose. “We look

BIGiOK's Pathway to Learning

for organizations that value the industry over profit,” Johnson explains. “Our focus is quality – and now, relevance and choice.”

Instead of a fixed set of topics, members can map a personalized pathway, from workers’ comp or surety/bonds to management or niche specialties.

Reasnor distills the value succinctly: “The member benefit used to be ‘highest quality education.’ Now it’s ‘highest quality plus significant financial discount.’ You can still pursue traditional multi-course designations, or stack micro-certs over days or weeks that build toward larger credentials. It’s your career, your pace.”

Johnson adds a headline number: “We’ve gone from two main programs to more than 35 designations. That’s a stepchange in what our members can access – and at better prices.”

Two Flagship Designation Paths –Two Learning Styles

BIGiOK’s refreshed lineup anchors around two complementary offerings:

• The Institutes: A broad, online, on-demand catalog with 31+ designations and a thoughtful waiver program. “If you already hold a CIC or CISR, you can apply those hours,” Johnson says. “Take one class with an exam and earn an Institutes designation without redoing all the coursework. From there, branch into management or niche markets. You’re building a path that fits your role.”

• AILP (Accredited Insurance Lines Professional): Offered with the Massachusetts Association of Insurance Agents, AILP is a live, instructor-led two-day program with seven parts. “It feels familiar to those who like real-time Q&A with an instructor,” Johnson notes. “I’ve taken AILP classes and really enjoyed them.”

Beyond designations, BIGiOK is also offering free CE through The Institutes outside of designation programs. “Many courses are on demand,” Reasnor says, “and they’re adding six live webinars weekly for those who prefer a classroom feel.”

One more structural change delivers long-term savings. “Think of a college degree,” Reasnor explains. “You don’t pay each year to keep it. With The Institutes, once you earn a designation, it’s yours – no annual maintenance fee. That’s real, recurring savings for agencies.”

One Call for the Right Fit

Choice works best with guidance, so BIGiOK has invested in a “navigator.”

“We’ve trained Ali Qureshi across programs, designations and learning styles,” Johnson says. “Call and say, ‘I want a strong commercial foundation’ – he may point you to AILP. Want bonds? He’ll route you to the right Institutes track. Prefer on-demand over two days of lecture? He’ll steer you accordingly. It’s like a school counselor for insurance education.”

Reasnor adds, “Members have asked for sales training for years. Now we have a micro-certification for that – and we can point you to it immediately.”

Momentum You Can Feel

The response has been emphatic. “I expected a little pushback from tradition,” Johnson admits, “but we’re seeing genuine enthusiasm – from the Board, from members and from Young Agents. Short, focused learning that fits real schedules just clicks.”

Reasnor agrees. “I can’t remember a time when there was buzz around CE in our industry. There is now.”

The shift also unlocks capacity for BIGiOK to do more in its own building. “We’ll host member-driven live days – oil & gas, leadership, mid-management –whatever’s urgent now,” Reasnor says. “And because we’ve freed bandwidth, we can finally build a pre-licensing program designed specifically for BIGiOK members.”

What Agencies Will Notice First

Targeted training and simpler execution. “Employees can follow a path tightly aligned to their role, then build on it,” Johnson says. “That makes for better employees – and stronger agencies.” continued on page 24

“And it’s one-stop,” Reasnor adds. “Everything you need is here – either heavily discounted or free with membership. No more hunting around for hours; you can come to BIGiOK and get it done.

“From an agency operations lens, that matters. As I often tell teams: if you’ve got time for leaning, you’ve got time for learning. Filling small gaps with microcerts and CE compounds into better service, higher retention and a tangible return on membership.

“Imagine building a development plan for every person in your agency without blowing your budget,” Reasnor says. “That’s the difference.”

The Simple Message: More Options, More Value

“We’ve gone from a couple of options to a full buffet of education – and it’s a

game changer,” Johnson says. “Whether it’s free CE or a new designation, this approach is more cost-effective and makes every person in your agency better.”

For Johnson, the change is personal, too. “I hold CIC and CISR, and I’ve taken some of these new classes myself. I wasn’t sure at first – but I really like the new styles. More choice, more flexibility. It works.”

Reasnor brings it back to the mission. “Same promise as always – top-tier education – just delivered in ways that fit how our members work today.”
