PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Resident Member:

It is my fervent hope that you enjoy this /nternational House Directory! \n addition to serving as a handy reference for our large and diverse community, it describes our mission or purpose, our 87-year history, our profile, our distinguished Board of Trustees, our World Council of Alumni and the endowed scholarship funds that are provided by supporters of the House to help resident members and achieve greater diversity. Perhaps most importantly, it is keepsake of your participation in our |-House community. We know that former resident members save their Directory throughout their lives as a way of recalling their hae life and prompting memories when contacting old friends. Inevitably, they are brought out at informal gatherings of alumni members for lengthy and enjoyable sessions of “whatever happened to...?” and “do you remember when...?” often refer to the directories provided when | was a resident member at I-House during my graduate studies. It is for these reasons that we have continued to print the Directory rather than move it onto our website as we have done with most other publications.

The Directory is not a “year book” nor, since it is published each fall, a reflection of a year gone by. Rather, it anticipates a year to come and, significantly your future lives as |-House alumni and world citizens. We hope that you will find it useful throughout your resident membership to help knit our global community together, and that in the coming years, as you peruse its pages, you will remember with fondness your experience here, and be encouraged to contact an old friend or acquaintance, as well as support the House. Lifelong friendships and cross cultural interaction are at the heart of the |-House community experience, and this visual record —a “snapshot” of our community in 2011-12— forever preserves a time and place in our lives.

Midway through the year, an addendum will be published containing photos and information about resident members who arrive mid-term. In the back ofthe Directory you'll find printed the pledge, which is recited at the Candlelight Sunday Supper at the end of each academic year. This moving ceremony marks in an unforgettable way the passage of resident members from this unique community experience into your roles as global citizens. In the years to come, hope that you will read these words again from time to time as a way of renewing your International House experience and its mission in your daily lives.

Sincerely yours,

On a frosty autumn morning in 1909, Harry Edmonds (pictured at left), secretary of the Upper Manhattan Y.M.C.A., was walking up the steps of the Columbia University library when he passed a Chinese student coming down. Edmonds said “Good morning,” and continued walking until he noticed out of the corner of his eye that the young man had stopped. “Thank you for speaking to me,” he said. “| have been in New York for three weeks and you are the first person who has spoken to me.”

Deeply affectedeby this encounter, Edmonds andshis wife, Florence invited a, group of foreign students to their country home for simple suppers Of sandwiches and coffee. These. gatherings continued, and in the winter of 1910-11, the Edmondses held the Tirst series of Sunday Suppersin Earl Hall at Columbia University.

The tradition of Sunday Supper continued from the opening of International House in 1924 until today. Held four times during the academic year, the all-house suppers celebrate the spirit of friendship and good will among the 7/00 residents from nearly 100 counth

WOMEN’S INTERNATIONAL LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

he Women’s International Leadership (WIL) Program is now entering its twenty-first year at International House. What began as a seed grant from the Kellogg Foundation initiated by former Director of Programs & Resident Life, Ellie Spiegel, has grown to support over 300 women leaders across the globe.

Each year, the WIL program seeks to prepare a select group of internationally-minded women for the challenges they will face as future leaders. Grantees are selected through a competitive process from a wide variety of backgrounds, cultures and disciplines that allows participants to gain unique and distinct perspectives on leadership.

This merit-based program is designed to offer practical training that will enhance graduate study focusing on special areas such as cross-cultural communication, identifying leadership styles, conflict management, multicultural team building and public speaking. Each grantee is challenged to find a mentor who will support her during the process and the program culminates with a week-long series of events in March that allow the women to use their leadership skills and engage the wider International House community.

Ultimately, the WIL Program strives to assist each grantee gain a clearer vision of her own abilities, and the skills and strategies necessary to effectively lead others particularly in cross-cultural environments. Once the program is completed, grantees are encouraged to continue their involvement in the program through alumnae networking activities and the mentorship program allowing the supportive network to continually grow.

Recognizing the strong value of the WIL program, Bayer HealthCare is sponsoring the program for the 2011-2012 year. Previous program sponsors include Merrill Lynch and Bank of America.

RESIDENT MEMBER GIFT CAMPAIGN

he Resident Members Gift Campaign (RMGC) is a vehicle through which residents provide financial support for a scholarship, program or project that will benefit future residents. The campaign Is an opportunity for current residents to help Shape the I-House community and to leave a legacy.

The Resident Members Gift Campaign, led by now alumna Vineet Dhindsa 711 and a team of resident members from across the community raised $8,235 including $3,000 in challenge grants from the |-House Trustees to support programs and scholarships and other core resources at International House. These service areas are at the heart of the |-House experience and impact each and every current and future resident.

Unlike past campaigns that spanned the entirety of the academic year, the 2010-2011 RMGC was conducted in just one month. The Trustees challenged the residents to raise $3,000 from 300 residents in just 30 days. The residents met and exceeded that challenge.

Three hundred sixty-four residents (52% of the House) and scores of friends, alumni and staff participated in the Campaign, donating gifts ranging from $1 to $100 with many more participating in fundraising events like the annual fridge sale and the firstever estate jewelry sale featuring pieces from the estate of Richard and Edith Pohl ’42.

The Resident Members Gift Campaign, like Sunday Suppers and the All Nations Celebration, is an |-House tradition which is sure to endure and will benefit all future generations of |-House residents.

Ifyou would like to get involved with the 2011-2012 Resident Members Gift Campaign, please contact Director of Alumni Programs Nicole Davidson at ext. 8425 or ndavidson@ihouse-nyc.org or visit us online at htto://residents.ihouse-nyc.org/ RMGCHome. Information about gifts may also be found on the website or by contacting Nicole.

International House greatly appreciates and proudly recognizes the hundreds of residents and donors who supported the 2010-2011 Resident Members Gift Campaign. A list of contributors will be published at www.ihouse-nyc.org/honorroll.

The 2010-2011 RMGC Committee, led by Vineet Dhindsa, present the check to the President of I-House.

THE ANNUAL FUND CAMPAIGN

he International House Annual Fund Campaign is supported by the contributions of the network of alumni and friends comprising this unique community. The health of the House and its residents is buttressed by the support of these dedicated individuals, corporations and foundations. Contributions to the Annual Fund enable the House to subsidize the expenses of every resident member by about $2,500 and to provide $400,000 in scholarship and fellowship aid annually.

Contributions to the Annual Fund Campaign are made in as diverse forms, intents, and denominations as our alumni and residents’ backgrounds. While some donors’ gifts support particular scholarship funds or program areas, others contribute to offset the general costs of operations. And while some contribute cash, some make gifts of securities, and others establish planned gifts to support International House in perpetuity.

In addition to subsidizing the residents’ expenses and providing scholarship and fellowship aid, donations to International House also support:

e Internet access in resident rooms and e Events organized to celebrate the wireless internet service on the C Level diverse cultures comprising the in the Map Lounge, Study Center, HR International House communityCommons, and the Pub; Cultural Hours, Salon Nights, and International Festivals;

e The Four annual Sunday Suppers which over the past 80 years have served to unite the International House community in the spirit of brotherhood;

e Speakers’ Forums providing the opportunity for a lively interchange between resident members and such distinguished visitors as

Nelson Mandela, Colin Powell and Madeline Albright;

e Specialized training sessions for participants in the International Leadership Program, Program Fellows, and Resident Fellows;

e Community outreach programs, such as the ongoing International House

Tutorial Program that pairs resident members with local schoolchildren for tutoring and mentoring, including educational field trips and other learning experiences;

e A series of day trips and community weekends for residents to get to know one another, as well as New York City and the surrounding areas.

Whatever their area of interest or means of support, all those who contribute and donate to the International House are united by their strong belief in the value of the International House experience and its capacity to inspire cooperation, understanding and, peace despite diversity.

The Annual Fund supports activities such as Community Weekends, cultural nights, Sunday Suppers and many other programs held through the year.
