What we do

International House Madrid offers a range of internationally recognised language teaching qualifications for teaching English to adults and young learners. Teacher training courses are taught face-to-face in one of our well-equipped IH centres and we also have a selection of online training programmes. We can help you whether you are new to language teaching or want to take your expertise to the next level.

What CELTA means CELTA is the original TEFL course and provides initial training leading to a Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults. It is intended for those without previous experience who wish to enter the profession and for teachers with no previous training. Success in the certificate has enabled many candidates to achieve their first teaching position. The course is highly regarded by employers as providing sound initial training and a strong basis from which to develop as a teacher of English.

Course Content The teaching and learning context Language analysis and awareness Language skills Planning and resources for different contexts Developing teaching skills and professionalism Courses have a minimum of 120 contact hours and candidates need to dedicate a minimum of 80 hours for the required reading, research, assignments and lesson preparation.

Trainees are continuously assessed in all the syllabus areas, including written assignments, and with particular emphasis on their teaching ability and potential. At the end of the course, successful candidates receive the Cambridge CELTA certificate and a detailed progress report.

Three ways to do CELTA Part-time 12 weeks

Blended 12 weeks

Full-time 4 weeks

Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 09:30 - 13:30. This is a more manageable option for candidates who are already working part-time or have other commitments and would like to extend the training over a longer period.

Most of the training is done online but teaching practice is still carried out face-to-face in the centre on Saturday mornings.

This is an ideal choice for candidates who are already working during the week, or live outside Madrid, and want a more flexible training plan.

Monday to Friday from 09:30 -18:00. This is the best option if you are not currently working and want to do the course quickly and intensively.

The content and evaluation of each course is identical and the certificate awarded in each case is the same - The Cambridge CELTA - one of the most internationally recognised and respected teaching qualifications for teaching English as a foreign language.

What DELTA means If you have several years’ experience in teaching English to adults or young learners and want to formalise your professional development as well as acquire a highlyregarded qualification which opens many professional doors, then the University of Cambridge DELTA course could be for you.

The Cambridge DELTA has three modules Module 1 Understanding language, methodolgy and resources for teaching

Module 2 Developing professional practice

Module 3 Extending practice and ELT specialisation

This module is assessed by a written examination comprising two papers, each of 1 hour 30 minutes in length.

This module is assessed through a portfolio of coursebased practical teaching and written assignments including one lesson and assignment which is externally assessed.

This module is assessed through an extended written research project. It is externally assessed.

Our DELTA course is ideal for full-time working teachers. Training is done in our centre and your assessed teaching practice is carried out in your school with your own students.

Our Opinion We firmly belive that professional practice (Module Two) is developed through an understanding of language, methodology and resources (Module One). Module Three consists of areas which are essential to teaching in general and are therefore also included throughout the course syllabus.

For this reason, we integrate all three modules into our part-time DELTA course, which is made more maneagble by being spread out over a full academic year. Guidance and practice is also given in preparation for the written examination.

What DELTA Bridge means The International House Madrid DELTA Bridging course has been designed to prepare experienced teachers and bring them to the entry point for the Cambridge DELTA the following academic year.

It is also for teachers who feel they would benefit by taking a year to re-examine the practices and principles which they were introduced to on their pre-service course and reflect on how they have developed these.

It has been written by International House Madrid and specifically designed to improve your teaching ability and give you the confidence to undertake DELTA the following year.

Our Other Courses IH Madrid Young Learner Certificate The IH Madrid YLC offers teachers who have the CELTA certificate or other formal training in EFL the opportunity to train to teach children aged 3-16. The course is ideal for newly qualified teachers and those with little experience of teaching young learners.

Very Young Learners (3-6 Year-olds) This course is for teachers who have either limited experience of teaching infants or need to develop their current skills for teaching very young learners in different environments.

Teaching Teenagers

An essential course for teachers who need to develop their current skills to include managing and motivating teenagers. We provide teachers with strategies and procedures to engage 13-17 year-olds and encourage them to be more involved in their learning.

YL courses run every academic term on Friday and Saturday mornings, October- December, January - March and April -June. They also run intensively in the last two weeks in September. See website for more details.

Professional Development Courses

International House Madrid can provide further professional development with a range of courses running on Friday mornings throughout the academic year.
