Mass Casualty Investigations through Geolocation: Lessons Learned in the January 6 Investigation

On January 6, 2021, thousands of crimes were committed by thousands of people over a span over multiple hours. This session explores the usage of geolocation in the investigation and the lessons taken away from one of the largest investigations in the history of the United States.

Peter Roman, Assistant United States Attorney, D.C. U.S. Attorney’s Office, Homicide Section

Peter Roman has been a federal prosecutor for more than 12 years. He spent most of that time investigating and prosecuting including everything from hacking tp homicide. He has also trained both foreign and domestic law enforcement and prosecutors in the use of digital evidence and how to conduct cyber investigations. For his work on the January 6 riot case, collecting geolocation evidence from the crime scene using geofencing, he was presented with a U.S. Attorney’s Office FBI Service Award.

John Bamford, Detective, Arlington County Police Department

John Bamford is a detective with the Arlington County Police Department’s Homeland Security Section where is assigned as a full time member of the FBI Washington Field Office Cyber Task Force. He has been a police officer with Arlington County since 2008. He graduated from the Antonin Scalia Law School at George Mason University and is currently a member of the Connecticut and Virginia Bars.

Sexual Deviance in Homicide Investigations

Utilizing case examples, Dr. Collins will discuss the (paraphilias) sexual deviances, common and uncommon, that can be found with individuals who commit sexual homicide.

Dr. Peter Collins, Ontario Provincial Police

Dr. Peter Collins has been the forensic psychiatrist with the Ontario Provincial Police, since 1995. Peter is an authority on violent crime and has worked with, and instructed, numerous criminal justice agencies in North America, and 23 countries internationally, including the FBI, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Interpol, and Europol.

Old National Bank Active Shooter Debrief

A debrief of the active shooter that took place on April 10th, 2023 at Old National Bank in downtown Louisville, KY. This class will discuss the incident as it occurred, LMPD’s response and the investigation that took place immediately thereafter. It will also discuss what we, as both the department and the investigative party, did right, what we did wrong and where we are looking to improve to assist any other department in attendance to navigate pitfalls if this situation presents itself.
