Biography Born in Paris on 13th July 1929, René Laloux was an animator whose extraordinarily fertile imagination fuelled a small but unique body of work that still attracts the attention of science-fiction and animation cinema fans worldwide. Laloux’s first experiences with film came as a direct result of gaining employment at La Borde Psychiatric Clinic in Cour-Cheverny in the late fifties. This progressive clinic operated an open doors policy

and the patients were actively encouraged to become involved in various therapeutic pursuits on offer. One of these was a popular painting class run by Laloux in a converted greenhouse. Enthused by the success of the classes and Inspired by puppeteer Yves Joly, (with whom he once worked), Laloux introduced the group to shadow puppetry and sourced a 16mm film camera. The resulting short Tic-Tac (1957) is a haunting gem, made over the course of a year and scripted and edited by Laloux and the patients. Next, the group would experiment with colour film, using fragments of tinted glass and sheets of tracing paper to create the kaleidoscopic Les Achalunés, (1958). Meanwhile, Tic-Tac was bought and broadcast on primetime television and Laloux seized the opportunity to secure backing for another production. Graduating to 35mm film, the group produced Les Dents du singe, (1960), a striking stop-motion animation using cut-out figures to tell the story of an evil dentist who steals teeth and the mysterious monkey magician who stops him. It was through the success of this film that Laloux would be introduced to well known satirical cartoonist/graphic artist Roland Topor.

La Planète sauvage AKA Fantastic Planet is a surrealist story based on the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia. Set in a far distant world human beings or "Oms' ' have been domesticated by the gigantic Draags. Wild Oms however are a problem and are exterminated by the dozen. One domesticated Om, Terr, is able to escape his masters with a headset that puts information directly into the brain. Armed now with the Draags technology he leads the Oms in an attempt to make life better for them...But will the demonizing destroy them?

Gandahar is a utopian world of rare beauty and tranquility, the result of extensive mutation and genetic experimentation. But the perfect peace is shattered when a mysterious evil force invades this idyllic serenity, turning people into stone with petrifying rays. The Council of Women holds court and decides to send Sylvain, son of Queen Ambisextra, on a mission to destroy the enemy. Together with the beautiful and adventurous Arielle, the enemy that Sylvain eventually discovers very far from his home is the ultimate failure of Gandaharian scientific experimentation. It is a giant brain known as the Metamorphosis, which has created an indestructible army of metal men to destroy Gandahar. Sylvain must battle the Metamorphosis, but not until 1000 years in the future.

LES MAITRES DU TEMPS

For Piel, a little boy stranded on Perdide--a desert planet where giant killer hornets live--the only thing that connects him to the rest of the world is Mike: a state-of-the-art interstellar transceiver handed to him by his father, Claude. As Mike manages to send a distress signal, Piel must do everything in his power to get in touch with Claude's friend, Jaffar, an intrepid space adventurer, to stand a fighting chance in the inhospitable celestial body. However, will Jaffar make it in time?

What did I like about this artist?

What I liked about Rene Laloux is his way of directing the animated film. Especially the diversity of styles that he uses on his film , going from full animated films to stop motion animation. I find it to be interesting and unique.
