News & Reviews Visit to Manor Farm On Wednesday 1st of April both Year 2 classes in St John’s Primary school in Midsomer Norton went on a trip to Manor Farm. Whilst there they met a Ugandan farmer called Zenah. She taught them how to make a key hole garden and then we had a go at digging in hard earth. We had a quick go on a tractor trailer ride until it stopped and we got off it with our two pint and six pint empty milk bottles in hand. In groups of five we got sent down to put water in our milk bottles and as we were waiting we had to sort the cleanest water from the dirtiest water. When we had finished they all walked back to the trailer. Then after lunch Tallulah and Theo got interviewed for Somerset radio and they were really exited because it was their first time on the radio. We then met a farmer called Rob and then met an African goat called Unicorn, but it was called Unicorn because it had lost its horn. The best bit of the day was getting interviewed by the radio reporter. We learnt how to make a mini bag garden where you cut four holes in the shape of a number seven so that the plants can stick out through them and grow.

New playground equipment Peasedown St John Primary School have recently introduced new equipment in the playground. The new fitness trail is especially exciting for children as it comes from their work and is their own choice. Peasedown St John primary school have a very active Green Team made up of pupils dedicated to maintaining and building on their Eco School status. The Green Team class representatives work closely with all pupils to monitor the energy efficiency. Mrs Woodland, the School Business Manager, monitors closely their energy use, the water consumption, the purchase costs for paper towels and the maintenance costs. As a result of Green Team’s

6

activities, supported of course by all children in the school, these costs have gone down. The money saved has gone as planned to Pupil Voice budget and has now been used by them to purchase this equipment. All of this represents important and ‘real life’ learning experiences for children. They learn: • Working together brings success • Cutting back on waste is morally the right thing to do and it saves money. • Making a positive contribution and being involved through things like Pupil Voice and Green Team helps make a better school with better equipment that they choose.

Through all these experiences the children also gain a greater feeling of ownership. When children feel that it is their school and their learning they also become more responsible. This of course contributes to the outstanding behaviour that Peasedown St John Primary School have in school and that has been praised in Ofsted inspections.

Raising our own chicks Using the St John’s Learning Journey, children in 6P were given the opportunity to explore a range of attention-grabbing topics in order to develop skills of independent inquiry and to broaden our outlook on life and the world around us. We decided that we wanted to find out all about chicks and how they hatched. We didn’t just want to read about it in books, that was too ordinary, so we decided that the best way to go about this was to hatch some chicks for ourselves!

We began by contacting Andy the Farmer from Green Parlour Farm. Andy gave us an incubator called Octagon 10 in which we placed 10 eggs. The incubator turns the eggs and keeps them nice and warm (approx. 37 degrees), just like the mother hen would do. Andy brought with him a special torch so that we could see through the shell to see if the baby chick had formed. We were fascinated by this and were surprised to find that several of the eggs had not been fertilized. Andy very kindly replaced these with fertilized eggs allowing us to transfer 24 eggs to a hatchery. The chicks take 21 days in total to hatch. This generated great excitement as we all kept a watchful eye on what was happening to the eggs. We were so excited when little cracks began to appear on the shell, closely followed by a tiny beak and the sound of chirping. Each chick seemed to fall out of its shell and looked rather damp and scruffy. This didn’t last for long, as very soon

the bits of shell fell away and their feathers dried out and fluffed up. We had a collection of yellow, black, orange and multi-coloured chicks that were all absolutely gorgeous! In total, 19 of the eggs hatched successfully. We like the idea of collecting eggs from our own hens and having scrambled egg on toast for breakfast! We are very glad that we chose this topic to study and know how lucky we are that our teacher allowed us to investigate it in such a practical way. We have learnt so much and the memory of this learning journey will stay with us for ever. Annie Blake and Jessica White 6P (St John’s Primary School)

GCSE students who need to relax properly and focus.” That’s what yoga does, it helps you relax and focus, so you get better at school and even better at having fun!! Yoga comes from India and is 7000 years old! It was a secret until only 50 years ago. Until then, only special religious people got to learn how to do yoga. They say that yogis who have been doing it for a long time, even learn how to make themselves invisible, travel through time and space and read people’s minds!! I guess, like old fashioned super

heroes! So, why don’t you give it a go? The studio is in Camerton, near Timsbury at Red Hill House, Red Hill and has a lovely carpet and is nice and warm. Come and enjoy your first class for free. Just call us on 01761 470 658 or check out our website on universalyoga.co.uk.

Yoga for kids in Camerton Children in St Mary’s Primary School, Timsbury, Midsomer Norton Primary, Norton Hill school and Writhlington have been chilling out and bending with Charlotta Martinus, as she has been teaching them yoga for several years in lunch and after school clubs.

Recently she started a kids’ club at her centre as well on Thursday evenings at 6pm for an hour. The yoga centre is in Camerton, nr Timsbury. If you like to move your body, but you’re not super sporty, then this is something for you. Also if you like gymnastics but don’t like competing, then this would suit you too. The fun thing about it is that you can do it with your parent or carer if you want to. It only costs £5, the first one is free. “The summer term is the busiest” says Charlotta “because of all the SATS and

As it rains – a lot – in the UK, parents and children use it as an excuse to stay indoors. With the advent of satellite children’s channels, DVDs and games consoles, more children than ever are glued to the sofa and leading an inactive lifestyle. The result: experts fear today’s children could be the first generation who won’t outlive their parents. A healthy lifestyle isn’t always easy when the weather screams ‘stay indoors’, but it’s nothing short of a necessity if the rates of childhood obesity in the UK are to reduce instead of escalate. Here are some ways to prise yourself off the couch. Limit screen time - by reducing time spent watching TV, you can free more time for to play and be active. Get used to switching off the TV when you are doing something else. Make activities fun - exercise shouldn’t be a chore, especially for children. Even when it’s cold outside, kids cans do a variety of activities. Ask your parents to involve you in playful activities as opposed to just doing things like puzzles and games. Involve the whole family. Take turns choosing things to do as a family. Ideas could be going on a family bike ride, going for a walk in your wellies or going swimming.

Children are more likely to enjoy exercising if their parents actively join in. Make plans at the weekends and in the school holidays, don’t leave the days to chance or they’ll be gone before you know it. Model good behaviour - children are more likely to make healthy choices when their parents set a good example. Even small things, like walking to the shops instead of driving, can encourage children to get moving. The more active and healthy you are as a parent, the more active and healthy your child will want to be.

Fantastic Fishing Experience

On Wednesday 25th March, Westfield primary School’s dance club (run by tremendous Mrs young) went to the Bath Forum, for the Dance Umbrella. They performed 2 dances, ‘Dancing Queen’ and ‘Silence’. All the girls were terrified but also excited. The evening, a showcase of dance from around the county was fantastic, with many bright costumes and catchy dances. All children, from infants to secondary school pupils had worked very hard. ‘The girls worked very hard, I was very proud of them and all of the effort that they put in.’ Mrs Young

Mace Graham (age 11) from Westfield Primary School has been fishing since he was seven. Last year he completed his first year of competitive angling; coming second in Thatcher’s angling league for the under twelve’s. Mace won his first match at Burtle Lakes in Somerset, successfully obtaining The Silstar Trophy. Mace enjoys course fishing as well as match fishing. Mace said, “I love fishing and I would really like to keep on improving my skills.”

Trampolining On the 8th March Westfield Primary schools trampoline team travelled to Birmingham to take part in the National Schools trampolining final. We had a smashing day and overall came second throughout the entire country. Coming second throughout the country is a wonderful achievement and our school is very proud of us. We are grateful for all the fantastic support we received, especially from Mrs Young and Mr Slater.’ Written by Hannah Slater and Lucy Parsons

St Johns were very pleased when their boys team came 3rd in the race and they also had a pupil who came 10th fastest too. In total 207 boys and 150 girls took part in the run. Well done St John’s runners!

A Trip To The Rugby On the 21st March 2009 8 people from Westfield Primary school went to Bath Rugby Club to watch Bath vs. Newcastle Falcons. We were even lucky enough to see them training before the game. However, there was another additional bonus to this game! At half time all 8 of us got to play on the pitch against Farrington Gurney, in front of all the Bath

spectators! What an honour it was to have been invited. Both teams started well, but all the tries kept on coming. At the end we lost by just 1 point; the final score was 6-5 to Farrington Gurney. It was such a good day. Mitch Rose 6M ‘It was one of the best games that had been played here by schools’ Steve Middleton, Community liaison.

The children at Peasedown St John Primary School had a very exciting World Book Day this year. Each KS2 child was able to enter a competition to review a book of their choice and each winner would have their review printed in HEY! magazine. Congratulations to Amelia Bean in year 3 who won the first prize, Ellie Fielding from year 4 who was runner up in lower KS2 and Caitlin Ashman of year 6 who was runner up for upper KS2. Below are the book reviews for you all to enjoy. If you haven’t yet read any of these books, why not pick up a copy from your library and enjoy them too.

Amelia Jane Gets in Trouble I chose Amelia Jane gets in trouble because it has a lot of comedy, most of all the main character is called Amelia and that is my name too. My favourite chapter is Amelia Jane and the bar of soap because Amelia Jane’s friends (the toys) make a sledge out of a piece of wood and a bar of soap. They tied the soap to the bottom of it with a piece of string to hold it on them as they slide downstairs and teach Amelia Jane a lesson not to be naughty anymore. The problem is Amelia Jane won’t share the bar of soap. I recommend this book to people who can read properly or are in year 3 +. This very nice book is a fiction book and for those who can’t read there are lot’s of pictures too. I think other people should read it and those who have read it before can try the other books. This book is quite old and I got it 3 years ago when I was 4. I like this book very much so you should try it. By Amelia Bean, age 7

The Lottie Project This fantastic book, written by Jacqueline Wilson, also the author of the story of Tracey Beaker, is one of the best books I have ever read! This story is about a girl called Charlotte Enright (also known to her friends as Charlie) She lives with her mother, Jo, and once Jo got into the habit of dating, Charlie went ballistic. When Charlie first me mark (Jo’s boyfriend) she wasn’t so keen on him, nor his son, Robin. Robin was a cute little 5 year old, who always dressed the same as his father and always did as he was told, until that very day at the carnival…. When the couple, Charlie and Robin went to the carnival one day, Charlie was put in charge of looking after Robin. She was very stressed and embarrassed, he begged to go on a ride, but Charlie said no and upset him. Just one glance to her side, Charlie realised robin was missing! If you want to find out what happens to Robin, read the book yourself! By Caitlin Louise Ashman, Year 6

THINGS TO

see & do!

Quick growing ideas There are not many better ways to get interested in growing your own food than for you to go gardening with your grandparents! When it comes to near-instant results, it’s hard to beat the old favourite combination of mustard and cress. Things happen fast enough for the most easily bored child and they’re pretty undemanding in their needs – countless generations of kids have grown them on wet flannels on their bedroom window-sills over the years. However, although they’re definitely speedy, they’re not exactly

going to make much of a meal! Fast Crops If you’re looking for a more substantial crop, you might like to think about lettuces. Although growing one the size of a small football does take a little while, if you sow a large number of them in a tray or trough and thin them out as they get bigger, you can harvest them surprisingly quickly – the initial thinning making a great garnish. Then, as the crop grows and you start to collect bigger leaves, you’ll be able to use them as the basis of a nice salad. Alternatively, some suppliers have started offering ‘sprouting’ kits, which contain a number of different edible seeds and in some cases, purposemade sprouters to grow them in. Mung beans – the things you buy in supermarkets as Chinese bean sprouts – are a particular favourite and easy to grow, but other suitable candidates include alfalfa, black eyed peas, broccoli sprouts, chickpeas, radishes, Oregon sugar pod (or snow) peas, sunflower and wheatgrass. All of these will be ready in under a week – and most can often be picked within two or three days. You can use

them raw to add a little something to salads or sandwiches or as cooking ingredients to enhance the flavour of other meals – and perfect for stir fries, if you like them. Patio Planting If you get started with some of these quick-cropping ideas to keep your interest, you might also like to think about planting some of the wonderful patio fruit and vegetables now available. There are lots to choose from, but some of the best are the likes of: • ‘Hundreds and Thousands’ micro tomatoes – produces huge numbers of small, sweet tomatoes and is ideal for patios, hanging baskets and even window boxes • ‘Hestia’ dwarf runner bean – an easily grown, heavy cropper, producing delicious and very tender beans. • ‘Malling Opal’ strawberries – sometimes available in special patio planter kits, this easily grown plant has large, sweet fruits and crops prolifically from early summer until the first frosts come. Best of luck with growing things – I hope you have lots of fun and plenty of produce to eat!

A scrapbook for all seasons Create a record of your garden to appreciate the changing seasons and see the value of simple and regular observation. Recording things provides memories for the future. How long will it take? The initial activity should take up to an hour. Thereafter, allow 15 to 20 minutes on a regular basis, perhaps fortnightly or every three weeks. What you will need • a scrapbook • sticky-backed plastic • old seed catalogues • a camera • scissors • glue • paper • felt pens and crayons Step-by-step guide 1. Draw a picture of yourself in the garden, write the date and your address underneath it and stick it on the first page of your scrapbook. 2. Then collect leaves and plants from the garden and put them in your scrapbook. Ask your parents to help you put sticky-backed plastic over

them, and to write their names by them. 3. You can draw pictures of different parts of the garden. 4. Or you can take photographs of the garden. Maybe you could choose one part, and take a picture of it on the first day of each month for a year. Then you can see how much everything changes. 5. Keep your scrapbook near a window and draw or write the names of the birds you see coming into the garden over the different seasons. 6. Stick in the seed packets of any seeds you grow. Use the old seed catalogues to cut out pictures of plants you want to grow - or you may like to design your dream flowerbed! 7. You can draw, cut out and label any wildlife you find. You might see frogs, butterflies, hedgehogs, ladybirds, beetles, ants, bees, caterpillars, foxes - the list is endless.

8. Why don’t you ask other people in your family, or visitors, to add something to your book? Tips and advice • If fresh leaves and flowers are used in the scrapbook, try not to choose thick, fleshy samples, as they will rot. Ensure you enclose the sample completely by using a larger piece of plastic than the sample. You can press samples if you wish, but this takes longer - up to six weeks under heavy weights. Some samples can be pressed and dried quickly using a microwave oven. • Your parents might be inspired to make their own scrapbook about the garden. • Remember to continue recording things in the scrapbook. Ask your parents to remind you too. • You might wish to get the scrapbook going in digital format on the computer.
