BTCC WINNER ANDREW JORDAN Lucas Electrical sponsored driver, Andrew Jordan and Pirtek Racing are the 2014 champions in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Cars after an all-action final event of the season at Brands Hatch. Andrew and the team had to fight back after a devastating retirement in the second race, but delivered yet another mighty performance to win the biggest prize in British motor racing.

Lucas Electrical partnered with Andrew Jordan and EuroTech Racing (the team behind the Pirtek Racing Brand) throughout 2013 for what has been an exhilarating British Touring Car Championship.

“We were very pleased to welcome Lucas as a partner for Eurotech Racing,” said Andrew. “It is great to secure such an iconic brand as a team partner. Lucas has a long and successful history in the sport and I’m pleased that we have contributed to that this year.”

Andrew entered the last stage of the 2013 BTCC with a significant 34 point lead over rivals Shedden, Neal, Plato and Turkington. All thanks to an impeccable season, which included six wins and further six podiums. Jordan ran a steady race one at Brands Hatch to maintain his lead but disaster hit in race two: “It was a big hairy moment at Paddock on the first lap when Shedden got tagged and went sideways,” said Andrew. “Then I got in a group and I had a feeling it was going to kick off.

Aron Smith had a lunge at Surtees and hit Rob Collard and spun him round. I was heading straight for Rob and had to hit the brakes and jink left. But Matt Neal was there because he was trying to avoid it. I clipped the BMW and straightaway I knew we were in trouble.”

“I thought I had a puncture so I carried on and then had a big spin at Hawthorns, the wheel was hanging off but I managed to get it back to the pits.”

Then, in dreadful weather conditions and in front of a huge audience, both live at the track and at home watching live on ITV4, Andrew went into the 30th and final race of the season from the very back of the grid, knowing that he had to get into the top 10 to seal the title.

Andrew and Pirtek Racing delivered magnificently and Andrew has now added his name to the list of British Touring Car Champions.

The emotions erupted as he took the flag, knowing that the title was won.

“The main feeling was relief,” admitted Andrew. “To do it in the last race was a great way to do it. I’d rather have done it earlier, but that way made great TV! We also won back-to-back Independent and Independent Team titles.

It’s been an amazing effort by everyone and we’ve finished 29 out of 30 races.”

As the champagne sprayed, Andrew paid tribute to everyone involved in the close-knit Pirtek Racing team.

He also recorded his appreciation of the support from his major sponsor and associate sponsors like Lucas Electrical all of whom made the season possible.

Likewise, Lucas Electrical laid praise to local driver Andrew and the Eurotech Racing Team.

“On first meeting Mike and Andrew Jordan, we were instantly won over by the dedication and commitment shown by the family run independent. Tim Allen The Santa Claus

Television sitcom star Tim Allen made his big screen debut with this light, family-friendly holiday comedy.

Allen stars as Scott Calvin, the divorced dad of Charlie (Eric Lloyd). Scott is distressed to learn that his ex-wife Laura (Wendy Crewson) and Charlie’s psychiatrist stepfather Neal (Judge Reinhold) have informed his son that there is no Santa Claus. While a sullen Charlie visits his dad on Christmas Eve, a noise on the roof brings them outside, where Scott startles the intruder, who tumbles from the roof. It turns out that there is a Santa after all, and Scott has just accidentally killed him. Because of a legal technicality known as “the Santa clause,” Scott inherits the jolly old elf’s job. As the next year passes, Scott rapidly gains weight, grows a white beard and is soon everybit the Father Christmas we all know and love. Tim is also available for parts as Moses or Zeus.

David Huddleston Santa Clause the Movie

A warm lovable and completely vulnerable take on a straight forward portrayal of the old guy we thought of when we were opening up Star Wars toys and Lego sets. His role was completely over shadowed by Dudley Moore and more so John Lithgow who plays the evil counterpart. Still a great part played, he probably would have been better cast a few decades earlier in a black and white classic.

Richard Attenborough Miracle on 34th Street

The old English fave Attenborough puts his spin on the classic tale of the kind hearted Kris Kringle with full effect of innocence and Christmas Spirit and all the bewilderment of a five year old girl. We prefer the black and white version as a movie, but this is the guy that comes to mind when we think of the story. Just don’t try keeping that German accent up Richie boy, it got you in a lot of trouble the last time!

Adding to a great supporting cast, Bob Newhart plays old St Nick in a very down to earth happy go lucky manner as the perfect stooge. A good move too as he was always going to be upstaged by Will Ferrell’s Elf in this rare instant Christmas classic.

Bad Santa is the most fun you’ll have while watching someone destroy themselves. For those who loathe the holidays or have a blacker-than-normal sense of humor, this is the best gift you could possibly get this holiday season. One definitely worth seeing if you’re sick of ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’.

Boxing has never looked so appealing...

The Wildcat Dolls are a multi-talented dance troupe, promoting events from Wakefield Wildcat Rugby League games, to boxing and cage fighting.

We met up with a few of the girls to get to know them better...

Are you all friends?

Hannah: Yeah we are all friends outside of work - we do loads together!

Becky: I think friends is an understatement! I couldn’t think of a better group of girls to spend so much time with, we all have such a laugh doing what we all love.

Kelly: Yes, we’ve become very close during our time with the dolls. We all get on so well and always have a laugh working together.

How do you stay so fit?

Hannah: I go to the gym a lot. I love running and sometimes work with a personal trainer to help me learn new things!

Becky: I have danced since before I can remember! This involves training 3 times a week including ballet, tap and gymnastics and also rehearsing with the Wildcat Dolls. Alongside the dance classes I love going to the gym, allows for some all important “me time!”

Kelly: I have a very active lifestyle, I go to the gym regularly and enjoy running, but my intensive dance training is what keeps me in shape and feeling fit!

Hannah: I always love a good boxing event - we get to work at lots of different events with our jobs, we’re very lucky ladies!

Becky: As a Wildcat Doll we get extremely varied events so it’s too hard to pick an ultimate favourite event! Personally, David Coldwell’s boxing events in general have been a pleasure to work at. Curtis Woodhouse’s fights are always filled with an intense atmosphere and a roaring crowd so I’d have to say that is one of my favourites!

Kelly: As Wakefield Wildcats cheerleaders we obviously love getting involved in any Rugby League related events and are honoured to perform at higher profile games given the chance.

Recently several members of the dolls (including me, Hannah and Becky) were successful in our auditions to become Rugby League World Cup Cheerleaders and are very excited about it!

How intense is your training for events?

Ha nn

Hannah: Before boxing events, if we have a routine to perform we have a long rehearsal before it! We like to make sure when we get in that ring we can put on a good performance for the crowds!

Becky: We always have a rehearsal with the girls before an event, these can be very intense learning new routines and spacing them for different venues.

Kelly: We always make sure we are well rehearsed for performances. It is sometimes hard to organise rehearsals with the full squad as we all have very busy lifestyles.

Most outrageous chat up line you’ve heard?

Hannah: “Wow, you’re tall” - Chat up line? Not so sure, but it definitely starts a conversation!

Becky: Whilst I was handing out programmes at a recent cage fighting event a man asked me if I worked at Subway, I genuinely thought he was being serious so I was a little confused. He then responded with “Well girl, you just gave me a foot long.” Cringe.

Kelly: “Feel this t-shirt, that’s boyfriend material” haha! and much more ‘outrageous’ ones that I can’t repeat!

Best place for a night out?

Hannah: WAKEFIELD! Becky: Yeah! Shakey Wakey is the place to be…

Kelly: Well I’m currently at dance school in Blackpool and love the night life, it’s always such a funny night out.

Fancy any sportsmen? If so who and why?

Hannah: Freddie Flintoff has to be up there for me!

Becky: This is an obvious standard answer for every women on the planet… David Beckham! He needs no explanation.

Who’s the most annoying?

Hannah: They have to be able to make me laugh and LOVE a good Nandos!

Hannah: Out of us three… probably me! I like to wind the girls up!

Becky: I agree it’s all about the banter! He’s got to have a great personality I can instantly click with, so If you can’t make me laugh… see ya later haha :)

Becky: Everytime we go out Hannah insists on a ‘Godfather’ shot, I’ve told her time and time again they make me sick but she still throws them down my neck… that’s annoying the next day hahaha.

Kelly: Tall, dark and handsome. Simple as that.

What is one thing every man should know?

Hannah: Oh where do I even start with that question!?…

Kelly: …That women are always right? That’s a good start.

Who’s the best dancer?

Becky: We all have very different styles of dance so it’s hard to pick just one dancer. Kelly is a commercial dancer where as Hannah is more of a contemporary dancer… so they are both the best at their individual styles.

Hannah: Beck is the flexible one! Kelly is an amazing contemporary dancer. I love the dancing we do on our Wakefield Wildcat Rugby League match days. We all bring different things to the boxing ring!

Kelly: I don’t know, all the dolls are great dancers!

Kelly: Definitely me! I’m sure everyone would agree on this.

Who’s the best dressed?

Hannah: Beck always has gorgeous dresses!

Becky: I could have every one of the girls wardrobes, they all have such lovely dress sense.

Kelly: Can’t really pick, we’ve all got our own kind of style.

Who gets the most male attention?

Kelly: There’s plenty of male attention to share around!

Hannah: It’s definitely a split between Beck and Kelly!

Becky: I don’t think it’s a question of who gets the most, it’s more of who gets the funniest male attention. Kelly once got hit on by the means of an African mating call… he even came to the car afterwards to ask her if she’d heard his howls and was she interested…

way to victory The Megavalanche Enduro Alpe d’Huez, France, is one of the longest and hardest downhill races in the annual world bike-racing calendar.

Hundreds of riders turn out to compete in a range of different classes and all hope to be able to cope with the extreme conditions that distinguish the annual 30 km course from the rest. Only the fastest riders over the shorter, rugged and equally intense qualifying course make the start with any realistic chance of getting on to the podium, let alone winning their particular class.

For example, the CD belt is lightweight and flexible, smooth and responsive to dynamically changing conditions. The ride is smooth and reliable under the most extreme conditions. And, with no lubricants to hold the dirt and dust, any debris is shed efficiently.

For these reasons and because the belt is quieter and cleaner than a chain, the CD is increasingly fitted on many town bikes, too.

Meet Frank Schneider.

The Megavalanche Eduro begins on the piste of the Pic Blanc glacier, 3330 metres above sea level.

After more than 10 years of World Cup Downhill Mountain Biking, he switched to Enduro racing discipline and is now a senior rider on the Germanbased Gates Nicolai Team. The Megavalanche Eduro is his race. The Nicolai Argon AM Gates CD is his bike.

Despite the snowy conditions, in the sun, the actual heat is often intense. With an almost vertical drop of 2600m to the finish, in Allemont, Frank Schneider knows mistakes will be costly.

Nicolai bikes are designed with unique frames and this particular Nicolai Argon AM CD also features something else that’s different. It has a weather resistant belt drive, rather than a chain.

On the starting line, he is ready. His training has been thorough. His skills have been honed. His attention to detail has been meticulous. Bike and rider are thoroughly prepared for about 48 minutes of deep concentration, intense physical punishment and all the thrills that downhill speed racing will provide.

From the off, his positioning and decision-making are good. Frank has it all. Winning is all about responding to the demands of the environment, anticipating the problems, remaining trouble-free and making decisive moves faster, more effectively than any of your opponents. Frank achieves all of his objectives because he trains hard to be the best. And if that sounds a little like designing a new belt for a car, you’ll understand why Gates sponsors the Gates Nicolai team.

Frank’s bike is a single speed hard tail, driven by the Gates Carbon Drive (CD). Who to listen out for…

The 1975

The 1975 are an English, Manchesterbased indie rock band that burst into the music scene with their self-titled debut album.

Co-produced by Mike Crossey who has worked with the likes of the Arctic Monkeys and the Foals, it went straight to the top, debuting at number one in the UK album charts.

Since the airing of their first track late in 2012, they have released four EPs and played a calendar of festivals and supporting concerts, before releasing their first studio album.

Staying safe in the Big Freeze In recent years Britain has experienced some of the worst winters since the sixties. As snow and ice sweeps across the country, the roads become a very dangerous place.

We met with Tockwith Motor Sports to find out what drivers can do to stay safe in winter conditions.

Tockwith Motor Sports are based in North Yorkshire and have over 40 years’ experience in driver training and motor sports.

They offer a range of advanced driver training programmes including the emergency services, HGV, motorcycle and karting – basically, if it’s got an engine they can teach you how to drive it. They also have a very successful racing team that has bred some of the youngest male and female drivers to win championships around the world.

One experience that is very popular at this time of year is the Skid Pan; an oval shaped track surface designed to simulate snowy conditions. Simon Moore, Driving Instructor at Tockwith Motor Sports said “A skid pan course is the best way to prepare for winter driving, whether you are a confident or a timid driver it teaches you how to use your instincts to remain in control of your vehicle in a skidding situation.”

We gave the Skid Pan a spin (literally), to find out what we could learn.

Keep calm, stay in control!

Instinctively, the first thing drivers do when they feel the car skidding is brake hard. This is often the reason why their car skids and they lose control.

Tip 1. Avoid braking hard, slow the car through its gears and brake gently. If the car begins to skid, try not to panic, keep calm and keep your hands on the wheel.

Tip 2. Keep the car steered in the intended direction of travel.

Don’t try and turn into the skid or away from skid, as this will increase the chances of a secondary skid and will be harder to recover from.

Tip 3. Try your best to keep the engine running, so that you can drive away swiftly once the car is under control. A number of accidents happen when a car skids, stalls and oncoming traffic can’t stop quickly enough.

2013 Carlin GP2 Team Driver: Jolyon Palmer Jolyon Palmer is one of the UK’s brightest young prospects in international motorsport, with a rich family history in the motorsport arena. Jolyon’s father, Jonathan, enjoyed a spell in Formula 1, before setting up the highly-successful MotorSport Vision organisation.

Jolyon has shown every sign that he too faces a promising career at the top level. From saloon car racing to Formula Palmer Audi and Formula Two, Palmer has moved up the ladder with great ease and, now – aged just 22 – Jolyon is in his third season of the firmlyestablished F1 feeder series, GP2.

Comma and Palmer joined forces again for the 2013 season, as Comma became personal sponsor to Palmer and technical partner to his current GP2 team, Carlin.

This partnership allows Comma to share its passion for performance and to impart vital industry knowledge to Jolyon and team.

Palmer’s relationship with Comma first began in 2007 and the Formula Palmer Audi Championship, with the Comma team sharing its technical knowledge with Jolyon and his crew. Comma continued to support Palmer until the end of his 2010 Formula Two season, when he placed second overall.

So far in 2013, the 22-year-old is enjoying a strong season with the Carlin team, with a succession of top-10 finishes and victories at the Hungaroring in July and Singapore in September.

Comma caught up with Jolyon shortly after his victory in Singapore to find out more about his life on and off the track. Here’s what he had to say:

Q. Motorsport runs in your family – how old were you when you started racing and how soon were you hooked?

A. I had my first little go kart when I was about 4 and I used to drive it around home all the time. I was always interested in football growing up through school though and I only started kart racing properly aged 13.

I was quick straight away and qualified on the front row of a 20-kart grid on my third race, I’d say from then I was completely hooked.

Q. You made the step up from karting to racing cars in 2005 – how difficult was the transition?

A. It was difficult because you have to learn pretty much everything. In karting you can learn the basics of how to drive fast and you learn a lot about race craft, but when you move into cars there is so much more to learn, such as using gears, having front and rear brakes, standing starts, learning all of the circuits and much more, so it was quite difficult at first.

Q. You act as a driver mentor for upcoming drivers, were you lucky enough to have a mentor?

A. My mentor in my early days was always my dad. He has been there and done it all so he was very helpful. As a young driver it is very beneficial to have someone who has experienced the difficulties and challenges you are facing, so they can relate to what you are thinking and help you along the way.

Q. You’re now racing with top team Carlin in GP2 at some of the world’s top circuits – what kind of speeds and what levels of G-Force do you reach in a GP2 car?

A. We hit a top speed of around 330kph at Monza but it’s the acceleration which is more of a buzz I think. We do 0-100kph in around 2.5 seconds on a good start and 0-120mph in around 6 seconds. We hit around 3.5G probably for a high speed corner; it takes a while to get used to it on the neck and arms!

Q. Who do you most look up to in motorsport?

A. Probably Fernando Alonso. He is the most complete driver around, I think he is somebody all up and coming drivers can learn a lot from.

Q. How does technology help you get the best performance in a race?

A. We have a lot of data on the car and with the engineer we can look through everything I’ve done during a session and how I could have done it better, or what I did that was good so I can repeat it.

Q. A number of today’s F1 stars – Sebastian Vettel included – raced with Carlin en route to Formula 1, what is so special about the Carlin team?

A. I think they are inherently successful. In every series they take part in they run at the front. In a championship that is completely equal spec it is down to the people to make the difference and I think they are a really good bunch of guys who do a very good job.

Q. You’ve got a fairly long-standing relationship with Comma Oils & Chemicals – how has Comma supported you in your career so far?

A. They have been very important in my career so far. They first supported me in my first season in single seaters in FPA in 2007 and continued to do so until my 2nd place in the F2 championship in 2010. I’m extremely happy to have Comma back on board again for 2013, I’ve had a lot of great times with them and I hope to have many more in the future. Recently motorsport has become a lot more commercial, so it’s great and very important to have a company like Comma behind me.

Q. What is your career highlight to date?

A. Either my GP2 win in Monaco or my Hungary win this year. My first win was great and at Monaco it was even better but I was very happy with my Hungary win, I started seventh and drove one of my best races and came through to win, it was a really enjoyable race.

Q. Is there a particular circuit you’ve never raced at but would like to?

A. Everyone says Macau is an awesome track. I like street circuits so that would be cool. Apart from that anywhere where there is a real passion for motorsport from the fans, so somewhere like Sao Paulo or Suzuka.

Q. What car do you drive on the road and do you enjoy driving?

A. I didn’t particularly, but now I drive the new Toyota GT86. It’s great fun, rear wheel drive and with enough power to have good fun on the road!

Carol, 26, has been voted Scottish Lady Driver of the Year for the last SIX years. She was also awarded the Sheila White Trophy, the Scottish Motor Racing Club award for the person most likely to progress within motorsport. She then put together a stunningly consistent season to be runner-up the following year. The guys had been warned, but could do nothing about it as she dominated the championship in 2008. Carol has since competed in Formula Fords, where she missed out on the Newcomers Championship by just one point and Mini Coopers, winning the Ladies Cup and finished fifth overall. Back to Legends in 2011 where Carol finished second and in 2012 taking the title again, she thrives on the pressure and has the talent to steer her way to the front of the grid.

Now she is ready to move on to the biggest stage of her career so far. In 2014 Carol is set to take on the Ginetta GT5 Challenge, boasting some huge grids and at some of the UK’s top circuits. The Ginetta Challenge supports the British GT Championship the UK’s top Endurance Championship. This will be a great learning ground for Carol as she prepares for bigger things to come.

TECHNICAL CHALLENGES GARAGES FACE Like all companies we have to stay one step ahead of our competition and understand and embrace the challenges that we face.

This is never more true than in the independent aftermarket. Nobody outside of this industry would have appreciated the vast difference between a car of today and one of a few years ago and these developments will continue at a rapid pace, largely due to European and Worldwide legislation regarding the emissions and efficiencies of vehicles.

With this in mind what will be the technical challenges garages will face in the next couple of years?

Euro five emmission compliant Most workshops will now start to encounter large numbers of 60-plate vehicles requiring their first MOT and therefore service outside of the dealership network. The vast majority, if not all of these vehicles will be Euro five emission compliant, for the inlet manifold injected petrol vehicle this does not require extensive engineering to achieve this, but possibly the use of a broadband lambda sensor. However a more challenging aspect of this will be the direct injection petrol car typically FSI/TFSI because of the extreme air to fuel ratio that these vehicles can adopt; only a broadband lambda sensor is capable of monitoring these such vehicles and in some cases the use of a

vehicles you can expect to see in garages over the next few years...

NOx Cat is also required, which means extensive monitoring.

As for diesel vehicles all of these will now require extensive EGR systems along with heat exchangers, almost any attempt to bypass these systems will cause the vehicle to malfunction. In addition to this we will also have intercooler bypass systems, if you’ve not yet worked on a 60-plate diesel vehicle these systems will be new to you.

Whilst DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) is not a new technology for Euro five emissions, this system is now being monitored much more stringently, so logic will tell us that if our customers are experiencing DPF problems now it’s not going to get better on a 60-plate vehicle. A number of these vehicles may also be equipped with the SCR system (Selective Catalytic Reduction) clearly this in readiness for 2014 (Euro 6) when it will be pretty much mandatory on every diesel vehicle produced.

Stop Start Technology 2010 was the beginning of the industry mass adoption of stop start technology and it is acknowledged that by 2015 85% of all new cars will have stop start. If you are not familiar with how the system functions diagnosing a fault is going to be at best a time consuming, given that there can be up to 25 sensors involved in controlling the stop start system, anyone

of which can cause it to malfunction and yet not necessarily load a fault code. These vehicles will also incorporate regenerative braking, therefore a standard alternator output check is going to be a lot more time consuming, as for example something as benign as the owner of the vehicle charging it’s battery from the wrong side, will almost certainly cause a whole host of problems, none of which would be obvious.

Hybrid vehicles Then of course we start to encounter the hybrid element, given the fuel efficiency targets vehicle manufacturers have to achieve most see this is the only viable alternative. So unless you intend on retiring in the next few months or winning the lottery you are going to see more and more hybrid vehicles with major changes in this technology over the next few years.

Expect to see much larger batteries with the ability to charge from the home and cover a range of 20-30 miles on electric; only these vehicles will be equipped with a 7 kWh Lithium ion battery powering a 95 kilowatt three-phase brushless motor @ 800 volts AC. As you can see the independent workshop has a lot to look forward to.

And through adequate training you can stay ahead of the competition by providing up to date service and diagnostics for your customers.

VW ‘blue motion’ would indicate it is a stop start vehicle. Any assigned (blue TDI) would be a diesel vehicle equipped with a SCR system for the reduction in NOx.

What happens on the day?

The course runs on Saturdays and some Fridays, and includes free refreshments throughout the session. Obviously drinking and driving isn’t allowed when you’re behind the wheel of a 55 ton tank though, so the beers will have to stay on ice until your tour of duty is complete!

The whole experience lasts three and a half hours, during which you’ll put the 700hp Chieftain tank through its paces, as well as taking turns in an Abbot self-propelled field gun, an armoured personnel carrier and a quad bike. You’ll even receive a Certificate of Achievement at the end.

Beer Pong You will need one ping pong ball and 12 glasses of beer. Arrange six glasses of beer on either side of a table as if you were setting up bowling pins. Divide yourselves into two teams. Each player tries to throw the ping pong ball into the other team’s cups. If it lands inside a cup, the opposing team must drink the contents of that cup immediately. The first team to make their opponents drink all their beers, wins.

Matchbox It can be played by any number of people. The aim is to throw a matchbox over your drink in such a way that it either lands on its end, its side or flat.

End: If the matchbox lands on its end (smallest face) the person to your left must drink at least four fingers in depth of beer. Play then continues round the circle clockwise.

Side: If the box lands on its side (middle-sized face; usually the one with striking paper) the person to your left must drink two fingers worth of beer.

Play continues.

Flat: If the matchbox lands on its largest side then the person to your left must drink 1 finger depth of beer. Play continues.

Accidentally flicking a matchbox into a drink: Incurs an immediate penalty of downing their own drink in one go.

The matchbox not landing on the table: Incurs a penalty of drinking two fingers depth of beer for the thrower.

Flip Cup A relay race game played with plastic party cups. Teams are divided into 4 or 5, each with a half cup of beer, or 2 shots of hard liquor.

Each person must drink the contents of their cup, then place it (open side up) at the edge of the table, and either by flicking or lifting the bottom, flip it so it lands upside down on the table. Only when the flipper is successful, can the next team member start drinking their drink. First team to finish wins. The losing team must complete a forfeit, set by the winners.

I stopped doing Christmas do's 10 years ago but I am reminded of a corporate party where a young Scots programmer, seated at a table with the then female personnel manager, became more and more annoyed with her attitude. Now our hero was wearing a kilt as is the tradition for smartly dressed occasions. Come the end of the evening our man stood up somewhat unsteadily walked to behind the lady in question, lifted his kilt and placed his tackle on her shoulder with a few choice words to go with it!

Last year I danced, ate and drank during the office end-of-year Christmas party. I won the man of the party award for the best performer. This did not go down well with my immediate boss because he too was eyeing the prize. He revisited the matter during the staff performance appraisal. He rated me very low saying that I can only perform at parties. This year I decided to boycott the end-of-year party for my boss. Once beaten I am twice shy. I have realized the truthChristmas is for sober reflection.

Tordoff has well and truly made a name for himself, with 6 podium finishes over 30 races, including a resounding win in the first round at Snetterton, mid-way through the season. We caught up with Sam to chat about life on and off the track.

First of all, congratulations on finishing 6th in the Driver standings in your first full season in the BTCC. Your team MG KX Momentum Racing, finished 2nd in the team standings, how highly do you value these results? And how did you celebrate?

Yeah really good, at the start of the year we didn’t expect, well, I didn’t expect it for my first season. If you look at the 5 that beat me, they are all past champions, so I don’t think there’s any more that I could’ve done really. I didn’t expect to get a win as early as I did, and I didn’t expect to get as many podiums as I did. So all in all it was a great first year.

I didn’t celebrate funnily enough; I was back at work the next morning at 7.30am, if Jason had won the title I’m sure it would have been different!

What is the relationship like between yourself and Plato?

Very good, obviously he’s my mentor as part of the KX Akademy, which is a Tesco initiative that he runs, so it’s a bit of a double whammy, because we’re team mates, as well as him being my mentor. We share information, he’s always open and honest and at the end of the day we’re actually really good friends.

If you ever won the BTCC, how would you celebrate?

I’d go out and get pissed, definitely! I think even on Sunday Andrew Jordan didn’t think he’d win it after the second race!

Obviously if I did win I’d celebrate with my team.

Do you see yourself progressing beyond BTCC, what’s the goal?

Yeah definitely. Firstly, there’s no reason why you can’t stay in the BTCC for a while, the likes of Jason Plato and Matt Neal have been competing in it for years, and you can make a good living staying in the BTCC. But, beyond BTCC I’d like to race in the World Touring Cars, maybe if I make a name for myself in the BTCC a manufacturer will pick me up.

How did you get into racing?

I started karting when I was 9 years old for a bit of fun with my Dad, and it just spiraled on from there really.

What advice would you give to aspiring racing drivers hoping to compete professionally?

Race to your budget. You need sponsors, the hardest part of racing is actually getting on the track. The hard work is done off the track, the driving really is a small part.

Your Grandad Jack Tordoff was a racing driver, and later went on to own Yorkshire’s most famous car dealerships, how much of an impact has your Grandad had on your racing career?

Massive, if he hadn’t been such a successful businessman I would have never had a racing career. In the beginning it was only the company that did back me financially.

How do you prepare for a race, and do you have any pre-race rituals?

We do a lot of preparation on the Friday before a race, analysing all of the data, and I do a track walk and watch videos. Before a race I like to go and take myself off somewhere quiet to just chill out for a bit.

Occasionally things get pretty heated with other drivers on the track, have you ever been involved in any fisticuffs?

Well at Silverstone, the second to last round, Matt Neal took me off, which was his fault and I had a few choice words with him after the race. But the officials did sort that and punished him.

What is the biggest accident you’ve had?

I’ve had a few…I wrote off a Clio at Oulton Park back in 2009, that was a big shunt. We were three abreast heading down the straight and the guy in the middle decided to turn into me and put all 3 of us into the wall.

Touring Cars has a die-hard following of fans, what’s the most outrageous thing a fan has done that you know of?

They are pretty mad to be fair, this season I’ve realised just how big the fan base is and how committed they all are. They stand in the rain soaked through, sodden but are literally having the time of their lives. Jason has told me some funny stories about girls throwing knickers at him, but I haven’t experienced that myself.

To what, or who, do you attribute your successful racing career to?

Definitely to my Grandad, but also to my Dad, he works just as hard as I do, he’s there every race weekend and does a lot of work off the track with the sponsors, which is one of the most important parts of racing.

How physically tough is competitive racing?

It is tough, you do have to be fit. People think it’s easy because you’re just sat down driving, but the G-Forces take its toll over 3 races, with very little rest in between, so that in itself is tough. We reach speeds of up to 150mph depending on the track, it’s a quick car, it has 350bhp.

Being a professional racing driver must have its perks…can you name us a few?

It certainly does! My grid girl is now my girlfriend, and you do meet a lot of people and get to visit loads of places. I also get tickets to Silverstone events like the F1. It’s great to be able to say “I’m a racing driver”.

If you could own any car, what would it be?

Ferrari 458, I’ve always wanted one of them, my ambition is to have a bright red one in my garage one day.

If someone wrote a biography about you, what would the title be?

Good question…I suppose it would have to be something about being a boring accountant through the week and a racing driver by the weekend.

Sara williams

Even in the second decade of the 21st Century, female rally drivers are something of a rarity. Rarer still are winning female rally drivers. So a female rally driver who has won two national rallies this season is a special breed.

Growing up in rural Brecon, 24 year old Sara Williams’s passion for the sport came from navigating on rallies for her father, Jonathan. The garage proprietor was a regular competitor at Pembrey Circuit in West Wales and at the age of 16, Sara joined him in the passenger seat.

“We won one of the events which is a good way to start your career”, says Sara, “I wanted to start driving as soon as I was 17 but if it wasn’t for dad I wouldn’t be involved in the sport at all.”

gaining experience in that car she switched to a more powerful Honda Civic for the next two seasons, competing in both the Welsh National Championship and the UK wide BTRDA series.

The next major step in Sara’s career came in 2009 with a switch to an iconic rally car, the Subaru Impreza, and a move from asphalt rallies to the daunting gravel forest stages for which Wales is famed.

2010 was a pivotal season for Sara, providing the result that brought her to the attention of many in the sport.

of the World Rally Championship round, she finished in an impressive fourth place overall.

2013, however, has provided an even greater milestone in Sara’s rallying career.

Her first national victory came on the Swansea Bay Rally in May. By a remarkable coincidence, that win came exactly 30 years after Louise Aitken-Walker became the first ever female national rally winner in the UK on the very same event.

To make it an even greater coincidence, last year saw Sara presented with the Louise Aitken-Walker Award by the British Women Racing Drivers Club for her achievements in the sport.

At the time, Sara commented, “Louise is a real heroine of mine. She’s an inspiration to my rally driving and proof of what can be achieved by a woman at the top level of the sport.”

One win wasn’t enough for the ambitious Sara, however and in September she found herself on the top of the winner’s podium once again after taking victory on the Red Kite Stages, held over some of the most demanding stages in Wales.

The event is a special one for Sara because it was the first ever gravel rally that she competed on, in 2009. Then she was seeded last on the road and she and codriver Patrick Walsh from Aberystwyth finished in 21st place.

Just four years later Sara was seeded at the head of the field in her Subaru Impreza STi. The Llandovery based event saw some of the forest stages completely dry while

others ran in torrential rain. Sara, with Dai Roberts from Carmarthen alongside her on this occasion, mastered the difficult conditions to finish 23 seconds ahead of their nearest rivals after setting the fastest time on three of the six stages.

A modest Sara is quick to share the glory, however, saying, “I couldn’t have achieved any of this without my two regular codrivers, Patrick and Dai as well as Aled Davies who sat with me on the Swansea Bay Rally.”, adding, “I also have to thank my sponsors, Millers Oils, Pro-R, Ian Jones Tyres and Geoff Jones Motorsport, Dunlop Tyres, Brecon Motors and Brecon Car Rentals, who make my rallying possible.”

Now Sara is preparing for her final challenge of the season, the biggest so far, when she tackles Wales Rally GB once again. Based this year in North Wales the event incorporates some of the most iconic rally stages in Britain and will give Sara a chance to measure her performance against the world’s leading rally drivers as they tackle the final round of this year’s World Rally Championship.

It’s a tough challenge but not one that fazes Sara. “With the two wins and the experience I have gained this year rallying not just in Britain but in Ireland as well, I feel better prepared than ever and I am determined to put in a strong performance.”

Looking further ahead, Sara is clear on her ambitions both inside and outside the sport. She currently works as a Sales and Service adviser in the family business, Brecon Motors. “I would like to carry the business forward”, she explains, “and I think Dad would like me to.” As far as rallying is concerned she is equally emphatic. “My ambition at the start of the year was to win a national rally. Now that I have achieved that I am starting to think about what I could achieve on International events.”

Oil is one of the most important ‘parts’ of an engine. It reduces friction and wear, helps manage engine heat and protects against the effects of high temperatures and damaging contaminants. However, as the trend for downsized engines continues in the UK and across Europe, modern engines are placing more demands on lubricants – higher pressures and temperatures cause increased friction unless components remain sufficiently lubricated.

OF UK DRIVERS CONSIDER CAR MANUFACTURER’S RECOMMENDATION AS ONE OF THEIR FIRST CRITERIA WHEN SELECTING A BRAND OF OIL Synthetic Oils Oil suppliers addressed this by developing fully-synthetic oils, which facilitate excellent fuel efficiency with optimum levels of protection and performance – many engines must now use this type of oil to provide the proper lubrication.

Synthetic oils do not have the impurities found in mineral oils, which can cause the oil to break down at higher temperatures and can create a build-up of sludge in the engine. Mineral oils degrade more quickly than synthetic oils, making them unable to cope with extended drain intervals. The main advantage of synthetic oils is that they provide protection to the engine across a far wider range of temperatures, up to an engine’s maximum temperature and beyond. Their lower viscosity helps improve fuel efficiency, whilst offering greater protection. Additives in the oil, such as detergents, stop deposits forming in the engine and dispersants assist by containing the particles caused by oxidation and wear in the oil, stopping sludge build-up. The manufacturing 70

process allows synthetic oils to be specifically designed to provide consistent, superior performance.

The decline of 10W-40 While low viscosity oils have become standard for modern engines in recent years – 5W-30 and 0W-20 are currently among the most popular for new cars – many independent workshops continue to offer high viscosity oils, such as 10W-40, despite technical advice to the contrary from car manufacturers. It is important that workshops understand the basic differences between oil formulations by looking at the viscosity. The lower the first number (5W), the thinner the oil will be when cold and the better the oil will flow around an engine. The greater the second number (30), the thicker the oil will be at higher temperatures in order to protect critical engine parts.

easily and allowing the oil to circulate quickly. Manufacturers are moving away from 10W-40, instead recommending lower viscosities, such as 5W-30 and 0W-30. Ford, for example, hasn’t built an engine designed to take 10W-40 oil since 1998, while many OEMs such as Ford and BMW now actively recommend that consumers top-up modern vehicles with lower viscosity 5W-30 or 0W-30 oils for improved efficiency in downsized engines.

According to car manufacturers, the majority (55%) of the current UK car parc requires either 5W-30 (36%) or 5W-40 (19%). Only 24% of cars require 10W-40 oil.*” Right Oil, Right Car It is important that workshops use the right oil for the right car. Oils that have gone through a manufacturer’s testing process and are marked as ‘approved’ will ensure the manufacturer’s warranty remains intact. Many car manufacturers have their own oil specifications and for these manufacturers, this is all that is important – workshops must use the oil meeting the manufacturers’ approvals.

Results from a YouGov survey commissioned by Castrol in 2011** found that 60% of UK drivers visiting a workshop consider their car manufacturer’s recommendation as one of their first criteria when it comes to selecting a brand of oil.

Castrol ensures that all of its oils are fully ‘approved’ by car manufacturers, where other oils may say ‘meets specifications’ or that they are merely ‘suitable for use’. More car manufacturers recommend Castrol than any other oil brand.

The moment Four minutes beforehand, there had been only bitterness. Now, there was only brilliance.

The moment Czechoslovakia stood on the brink of a brilliant victory. Since Uli Hoeness had just ballooned West Germany’s third penalty over the bar, all Antonin Panenka had to do was slot home this last spot-kick. Except, you could have forgiven him for feeling some pressure.

Picking up the ball in his own half, Maradona first executes a perfect double-pullback to deceive Peter Beardsley and Peter Reid. Leaving the latter for dust, he then skips past all of Terry Butcher, Steve Hodge and Terry Fenwick with elusive changes of pace and electric pieces of agility.

Finally, there’s one player to beat; Peter Shilton.

Maradona shapes to shoot before finishing the move in the only manner that’s truly fitting; deceiving Shilton too, by rolling it the right and into the net.

Not that you would have thought any of this weighed on Panenka. He effortlessly and irreverently chipped the ball into the centre of the goal, completely outfoxing the great Sepp Maier.

But there was one truly stunning piece of pure Brazilian magic left.

With five minutes left, after four players had already started the move, Clodoaldo “starts the carnival” – as Carlos Alberto himself put it. With an uncharacteristic piece of evasive technique that takes four Italians out of the game, the midfielder frees space as well as Rivelino.

The left-winger then curls a luxurious pass up the left for the drifting Jairzinho to collect. He draws two Italian defenders before feeding Pele at the edge of the box.

SPORTSMANSHIP Mansell gives Ayrton Senna a lift after the British Grand Prix Silverstone, July 1991

Runaway Drivers' Championship leader Ayrton Senna looked capable of a fifth win in eight races as he hounded Mansell towards the end of the British Grand Prix in 1991.

But the Brazilian was forced to back off with a few laps left as his car began to run dangerously low on fuel - and he was robbed of a podium spot when it finally ran dry on the last lap of the race. Mansell demonstrated the huge respect he had for his opponent by stopping to pick up the stranded Senna after crossing the line.

West Ham had pulled level in injury time of their Premier League clash with Everton at Goodison Park, and had the chance to take all three points when the ball was crossed to controversial Italian striker Di Canio with just moments left. But Di Canio was having none of it. With the goal at his mercy, he caught the ball and called for the referee to allow assistance to be given to Everton's injured goalkeeper Paul Gerrard, who was slumped on the turf outside his box.

Jack Nicklaus concedes putt to share the Ryder Cup Royal Birkdale, September 1969

On the final hole of the deciding match of the 1969 Ryder Cup, Nicklaus holed his lengthy putt, leaving Jacklin a two-and-a-half foot putt to tie the Ryder Cup - yet even before Jacklin could line it up, Nicklaus picked up his opponent's ball marker to concede the putt, to tie the match 16-16.

The famous gesture instantly went down in history as one of the greatest acts of good sportsmanship ever seen.

The Christmas and New Year celebration period always tempts people to over indulge. The holiday season is a great time to enjoy those festive family feasts but once the dawn of the New Year is on us the first thing on people’s minds is to lose weight.

This cardio and abs workout will help get you back on track and regardless of the winter weather can all be performed in the comfort of your own home without any equipment.

Jumping Jacks In simple terms ‘Star Jumps’. Perform this for 2 minutes.

Side Lunge Hold a low weight dumbbell in each hand.

Step your left leg out to the side and bend your knee reaching hands down on either side of your left foot. Push off your left foot to return to centre and repeat on your right hand side. Perform for 2 minutes.

Hop Create a line on the floor with something like a golf club or broom handle. With 2 feet together hop sideways over the item back and forth. Move quickly but controlled and perform for 2 minutes.

Knees up Raise your arms over your head then lift your left knee and bring your right elbow down to meet it. Repeat with your opposite side. Move quickly but controlled and perform for 2 minutes.

Weighted squat Hold a low weight dumbbell in each hand.

Lower in to a squat position whilst raising your right arm up above your head keeping your left arm down. Repeat with your opposite side. Move quickly but controlled and perform for 2 minutes.

V-ups Lay flat on your back with your arms over your head. Raise your lower and upper body at the same time to create a V like shape with your body. Lower and repeat for 30 seconds.

The Twist Hold yourself in the V-UP position. Either slightly bend your legs or keep straight for a tougher workout. Rotate your upper body left and right. Hold a weight in both hands to increase difficulty. Perform for 30 seconds.

Swimmer Lay on your front with your arms over your head in front of you. Keep your legs straight and lift your arms, chest and legs off the floor. Move your arms simultaneously up and down. Stay lifted from the floor and perform for 30 seconds.

Rest for 60 seconds after the full workout and then repeat once more A FEW MORE WORKOUTS: Why not try some of the boxing pro exercises such as; skipping, shadow boxing, single press ups in to star jumps and good old-fashioned running.
