Brushed out rustic design in a few steps

Brushed wood is the talk of the town and is getting more and more attention among customers. Brushing of wooden surfaces is one of the most important processes when working on rustic wooden furniture or just simply decorating. Our company has been looking into brush sanders for the past five years. The first machine we have offered was the JBS22. And as the time went on, we have expanded our range of brush sanders with the smaller JET 10-20 Plus and a slightly larger DDS-225.

Thanks to our long-term experience and a wide variety of brush sanders, we are being approached more and more by woodworkers and craftsmen. That is why we will try to answer the majority of frequently asked questions in this article. To achieve the ideal and perfect brushed effect, it is necessary to follow the proper procedure and stick to some basic principles. We believe that the advice we provide in this article will serve you as an entry point for achieving a perfect surface when brushing and making rustic furniture.

What is the difference between manual or mechanical brushing - by manual sanding we mean a hand-held sander equipped with a brush and without the option of altering the feed speed or an even removal. The main problems of manual brushing are the uneven removal, quick wear of the brush and too much time spent before you actually do any work. Mechanical sanding offers the opposite. Thanks to a steady feed and the option to set up stock removal you are able to achieve fine, even and most importantly fast results.

Brush types – various types of brushes are available for proper work. Every one of them serves a different purpose.

The main types are steel cordwire, abrasive nylon (Abralon for short) or nylon without an abrasive.

Another important parameter is the wire diameter, either steel or nylon. The steel brushes are ideal for speeding up the process, to quickly disturb the surface and create deep grooves. Some hardwoods are not suitable for abrasive nylon brushes, that material would leave the surface almost untouched.

The diameter of a wire leaves a so-called trace on the material. A thin diameter is able to reach deeper while the wider wire is ideal for surface work, that is why different diameters are used combined to achieve ideal results.

Steel Cordwire – a steel brush is ideal for quick disruption of a surface, especially a hard one. Smaller diameters (approximately 0,28 mm) are also ideal for medium-hard woods. Steel wires of 0,5 mm are especially ideal for hardwoods. The steel wire creates deeper grooves on one pass, those are a great start for further spreading and finishing off the grooves intensifying the brushed-out effect. It‘s important to remember not to overload the drum by setting up excessive stock removal. An overly deep stock removal may cause the wires to break out and shorten the life of your brush. What makes the steel wire more efficient is its inability to bend regularly.

Abrasive Nylon Brush – the abrasive nylon brush is equipped with bristles fitted with an abrasive grain of various sizes (G46, G80, G120, D240). The abrasive grain enhances the sanding effect of the brush. It‘s important to remember that this type of bristle is larger in diameter, up to 1,7 mm (G46). The smaller coarseness of brush means smaller bristles and less effective torn-out of grain. The brush with abrasive G240 has 0,7 mm thick bristles and is ideal for finishing tasks, cleaning off wooden surfaces and sanding of shaped parts with up to 15 mm deep patterns.

Recommended procedure – the brushing process may vary according to the desired result or type of wood, however, it is recommended to stick to a couple of principles. It‘s necessary to have the final, desired structure in mind before brushing. Am I going for deeper grooves or only surface alterations, what sort of wood am I going to be brushing? You will decide which brush to use according to these questions. The basic procedure for achieving a distinctive structure is the following. First, use a steel brush to create thin but deep grooves. Then continue with an abrasive nylon brush. You will go from thicker and coarser brushes towards finer and thinner ones. That way, the result will be a deep and distinctive structure. If you‘re aiming at surface brushing, the abrasive nylon brush with a coarse grain (G46) will be enough. The thick bristles will create a fine surface job. Then it‘s best to use a finer brush to clean up regular grooves, a G80 brush is ideal for that job. It‘s important to perform several passes to achieve the desired effect. We also recommend rotating the material. One pass pushes the grain in one direction so rotating the material by 180° speeds up the process.

Brushing of wood is a specific process that cannot be described only in a few points. But we still think this article may come in handy in the beginnings.

It runs in two speeds and has balanced cast alloy blade wheels, it is also lockable and has a superb cast iron table which can tilt from -10° to +45°. The rip fence is supported at the front and rear of the table and extends slightly beyond the cast iron table. The blade is guided both above and below the table with ball-bearings and rollers which give a positive support to the blade, resulting in a very good quality of cut and extended blade life. The machines are equipped with safety switches, electromechanical brake and an easily accessible blade in need of exchange.

JET JWP-12 Portable Thickness Planer

Why did I buy it? I bought this planer with smaller projects in mind. It‘s a small compact thicknesser with a slightly weaker motor, iron-plate table and a scale for height measuring. It‘s not a bad machine, but the only downside is the weak motor, that is why I set up removal for max. 0,5 mm. The machine is also suitable for transport when needed.

Article We are glad to have arranged an interview Peter Kovács with one of our long-term customers and precise craftsmen, as well as a long-term user of JET machines, about his experience and rating of JET products. It‘s been almost 5 years since he visited our customer centre with equipment for his woodshop in mind.

He was finishing his studies by then and was still visiting his faculty in Brno from time to time. That‘s when he started to equip his woodshop. It is our pleasure to introduce you to Peter Kovács, who completed his studies of electrical engineering at VUT in Brno. However, he still has some time to practise his woodworking hobby. He mainly works with solid woods and makes everything from smaller frames to large furniture pieces, various home accessories, stairs or kitchen tops. Each and every one of his products is made with high attention to detail and fine craftsmanship.

The first JET machine he bought was a Dual Drum Sander. I still remember how we tested the sander in our customer centre for almost two hours. It was obvious that Mr Kovács knows what he looks for in a sander.

Why did I buy it? I needed a machine for calibration and deep sanding of solid wood. Since all my thickness planers, older and new ones, are fitted with a regular cutter block, not one fitted with four-sided carbide knives, I used to have problems with torn out grain, especially on woods with a complex structure (like heartwood planks and planks made of oak, ash, walnut, but also around knags and split trunks etc.). I was finally convinced with the robust design suitable for deep sanding of larger joint profiles.

I am still very pleased with the precision of the machine, it‘s still better than 0,1 mm in the whole width of 600 mm.

At the same time, I really appreciate the simplicity of maintenance and we also cannot forget the easy swap of the abrasive. The only thing I would want to improve is the motor power. I have to sand longer pieces sometimes so I wouldn‘t mind having the opportunity of installing extension tables.

Otherwise, the sander is a handy, compact, cost-effective and easy to operate machine suitable for smaller woodshops. I have had it for almost three years now and it‘s become an essential part of my woodworking. I was really surprised with the precision it offers. It‘s only a shame there isn‘t a model with oscillation available.

Why did I buy it? I needed it for templates and sanding of awkwardly shaped parts. The main advantage is definitely the oscillation that improves the finish significantly.

I had to get used to the smaller worktable but was able to extend its surface by myself.

The bobbins are supplied up to 50 mm diameter. The 75 mm bobbin has to be bought separately. Today, I wish I had gone for the larger JOSS-S model instead of the smaller one. I could definitely find more use for it now.

JET JDS-12 Disc Sander

Why did I buy it? Due to space lack of space, I had to sell my old cast-iron double-wheeler sander of 80 cm in diameter and I needed a smaller replacement. This Disc Sander met all my requirements, cast-iron construction, compact design and ideal for everyday use. I can only recommend it.

JET JPT-310 Planer Thicknesser

Why did I buy it? I already had a planer thicknesser but I needed a stronger and more robust machine. I also wanted one with cast-iron tables (the previous machine had aluminium ones) and the simultaneous lift.

Based on experience, I prefer heigh-adjustable castiron tables, both infeed and outfeed.

Compared to the first machine, this thicknesser is a big step forward. Cast-iron tables instead of aluminium ones, not having to remove the fence when switching from planing to thicknessing but mainly, no more having to set the right angle on the fence, the weight of 230 kg instead of feeble 80 kg... The only thing I struggle with sometimes are the short extension tables, 1400 mm is not enough for planing. They would ideally be at least 2000 mm. This planer thicknesser is ideal for smaller woodshops. In my case, it perfectly complements a range of the older and larger machines I use when necessary.

JET 719A Mortiser

Why did I buy it? I find pin joints on frames, tables or chairs inadequate and weak. For all of these jobs, I use „mortise and tenon“ joints. I have partly replaced this machine with a Festool Domino XL 700 Joining Router, but it still remains useful for other jobs around my shop. I really appreciate the solid worktable that moves in two directions in dovetail tracks. It sometimes seems as if the machine would deserve more powerful motor. I definitely recommend using quality drills, those have to be kept sharp.

Why did I buy it? A smaller edge sander on a worktop isn‘t really an ideal machine for edge sanding of frames, drawers or for template production. But this sander allows for trouble-free sanding even with longer pieces.

The main advantages are the oscillation and the extension cast iron table for longer pieces.

JET AFS-1000B Air Filtration System

When sanding at an angle, I simply alter the angle right on the unit without having to move my workpiece. I recommend measuring the angle after any alterations with a square, especially at 90°.

Why did I buy it? A smaller filter would definitely not be enough, even for such small woodshop like I have.

This filter is powerful and effective enough.

I especially appreciate its power and speed settings. The controls broke after approximately two years, but I easily replaced it with a primitive but effective four-way switch. I don‘t necessarily miss the timer or remote control despite the comfort.
