As the house is one notable product to come out of the creative process, it is only natural that it has its own family of books where it can be found, pre cooked, readily digested. We are glad to be doing this in Romania, as we find the existence of a local selection of domestic architecture important, dedicated both to specialists and to the less trained, be it even for the immediate use of those looking for inspiration, if not for documenting this phenomenon in time. Thus, the sixth volume of the igloobest collection dedicated to Romanian houses proposes 16 projects, each one thoroughly photographed, accompanied by blueprints and its own presentation text.

A[a ar fi frumos [i, f`r` îndoial`, util.

A foreword, cause that’s why they call it so, should help explain the book it precedes, offering a series of accounts, perhaps the paper’s plan, perhaps certain critical references, etc. This would be nice and undoubtedly useful. I confess that I have no intention of doing this though, or not more than telling you that the sixth volume of the igloobest collection dedicated to Romanian houses proposes a selection of 16 projects, each one thoroughly photographed, accompanied by blueprints and its own presentation text. What I would rather observe here is the status of the house as a book subject. I imagine everyone has noticed that lately the phenomenon of books – their choice of subjects – arranged around family criteria has seriously gained ground. Constructions or cars, any kind of object, from fire guns to laces, baby animals to tattoos, etc. etc., practically anything that can amount to a series becomes a book. I think it’s hard to find any product of human creativity that doesn’t have, with some publisher or another, a dedicated selection album. The phenomenon is probably equally due to the commercial interest, to a kind of (collectors) mania to systemize and organise an increasingly complex world, one that is more and more dense in terms of fabricated goods. Beyond theory, the fact is that we can no longer ignore this way of packaging the results of human creativity. As the house is one important product to come out of the creation process, it is, isn’t it?, only natural that it has its own family of books where it can be found, pre cooked, ready digested for the more or less specialized reader. I am glad it is us who do this in Romania, as I think the existence of a local selection of domestic architecture is important, dedicated both to specialists and to the less trained, be it even for the immediate use of those looking for inspiration, if not for documenting this phenomenon in time. Unfortunately, the offer still scarce of quality subjects does not yet allow for a partition in subclasses (after materials, surfaces and other criteria), but I expect in the near future we will get there. The question I leave you with (to which I am still to find a satisfying answer) and whose key I invite you to read this album in, is whether or not the houses have become aware of their status of possible stars and if this has any kind of influence on their making…

The property is placed on the shores of lake Snagov, caught on a narrow strip of land between the forest and the lake: an exceptional, yet discreet positioning. Given extremely precise specifications and requirements from the owner, the architects approached the project with inspiration and simplicity. The starting point was the intention to offer that feeling of drifting, of opening up to the lake while also embracing the forest. Thus, the team constantly searched for ways of expanding the house through its surroundings, by voluntarily integrating these in the inner space. The ground floor contains and favors the reception area, the living room and its “overhanging” terrace, facing an exceptional view of the lake, challenging the structural engineers in order to achieve an 11 m opening of glazing without any pillars or intermediate support. The dining room is placed in front of a glazed facade with double height, for a full enjoyment of the immediate vicinity of the forest. In order to further potentiate this vicinity, the interior encompasses an attic wall fully covered in mirrors. The fabrics of the interior decorations were chosen with great care, consulting the owner, who invested intelligently and generously in this project: noble Romano Bianco travertine slabs for the ground, Italian parquet, walls clad in finned rosewood and textured plaster. The kitchen is clad in the solemn Macassar wood. The napage and interior lighting wear the signature of the master glassmakers from the Murano Island and of the renowned Catellean & Smith.

Placed in the immediate vicinity of the V`c`re[ti Delta, the I.D. House makes the most out of the opportunities set by the land, turning restrictions into benefits. With a compact volume, the construction displays a wide opening towards the park, through a generous glazed surface at the loft level, along with a terrace punctuating the volume. This glazing creates a dialogue with the surroundings, providing light and spaciousness to an otherwise small interior. Another element of aperture is the skylight, which besides offering a perspective on the city, contributes to the natural lighting of the loft. On the street side, the volume is more enclosed, the cantilever defining a covered space that marks and protects the access to the house. The building envelope is built in a “doubleskin” system, with folded plate, playing part in the natural ventilation of the façade during summertime and maintaining a hot air bed between the inner and the outer skin during winter. On the interior, the natural ventilation is provided by the staircase, which can be opened at the loft. The configuration of functions managed to maximize the given space, obtaining generous surfaces on an otherwise small lot. Thus, the ground floor, with a built surface of 85 sqm, contains the daytime area, with the access hallway, the kitchen, the dining and living room, and the lavatory. At the first floor, a surface of 105 sqm is organized to host the master bedroom, with the adjacent dressing room and bathroom, and two children bedrooms, with a common bath. The loft is designed as a flexible space, a leisure room that can be turned into a guest bedroom, while the basement is comprised of a technical room and a storage area.

Placed in a residential area adjacent to the capital city, with a low density of construction and a low height regime, this house benefits from the advantage of no volumetric or stylistic constraints that would otherwise be customary in a more coagulated urban tissue. The construction is distinguished through a simple, geometrical volume, developed solely on the ground level. The construction’s core is the living room, at the same time its highest point, developed on the ridge of the framing and leaving its structural elements exposed. This placement at the city edge also allowed for a reinterpretation of a series of features of traditional housing. Thus, within the access area, the link between the outside and the inside is ensured by a contemporary version of the vernacular porch establishing a balanced dialogue with the clear, rigorous lines of the landscaped garden. Another element embraced from the traditional repertoire is the wide eaves, rounding out the appearance of calmness, suggesting protection and harmony. On the other side, the wide glazing marks the opening towards the garden without affecting the intimacy of those inside. At the same time, the presence of glass, as well as the metallic grid that protects the open-air playground establishes a pleasant contrast with the natural shades of the wood and the green dominating the garden.

The building meets the beneficiaries’ passion for the Mediterranean style by rearranging its elements in a modern language – the rightness, bright light, sunshades, shutters, white paint, natural stone, wood essence and the fixed furniture. The fixed furniture whose panels reiterate the image of traditional shutters becomes a separation wall between rooms, access doors or the visiting grid. The wood is mounted at the ceiling level, in the soffits of the day areas and the access hallway, where alongside the white metallic beams, it gives the stair head a light appearance. The ceilings on the upper floor are finished with wallpaper in natural colours. The monochrome curtains highlight the traditional models of the carpets. The ladder, with a metallic structure and free steps, invites the zenithal light into the ground floor, while the marginal glazing of the double-sided furniture between the living room and the hallway brings natural light into the day area. The living room and kitchen are punctuated by spectacular fire and water accents: the double-faced fireplace and the three metre long aquarium mounted on the dining room wall. The table made of a centennial door leaf and the vintage chairs are emphasized by the design’s modern elements. The wood textures in different hues and ages highlight the authenticity of the interiors and lend depth to the design. The stone-fini-shing wall of the day area goes on to the exterior, visually sheltering the pool. The horizontal holes in its surface make room for the planters of climbing plants and for the cascades playing an aesthetic and practical role in hydro massage. The pool terrace encircles the roots of the tall walnut tree saved by the beneficiaries as a symbol of the spontaneous nature specific to Mediterranean gardens.

The building is developed in an hourglass shape, with the free stepped stairs and the glazed elevator at its center, which bring light to the very core of the house. The hollow shape of the side facades creates two irregular inner yards that connect both sides of the house. The midlevel floors define a tridimensional open-space. The exposed structure of the oblique-coffered concrete beams extends into the main facade’s terrace through a network of metallic beams, while the perforated steel plates support a series of shrub pots and become vertical pergolas for the ivy planted on the ground floor. The exposed concrete ceilings require the use of intelligent heating systems, with radiating panels within walls, floor heating, a heat pump unit and solar panels. The building management system, the LED lighting and the oversized thermal insulation efficiently handle the energy consumption of the building. The cardinal direction and the proportion between the full and the hollow ensure the natural light requisite, all the while offering the much-needed shelter from excessive sunlight. The curtain of vegetation between the building and the street shades the rooms of the main facade and integrates the building within its built environment, distinguished by the wealth of free vegetation. The interior design places its stake on spectacular raw materials prioritized on their different positions towards the source of natural light. The designer products supplement the range of materials with vibrant textures and minimalist shapes.

Contextul a determinat tratarea diferit` a fa]adelor. Interiorul, organizat pe trei nivele, încurajeaz` o utilizare natural` [i facil` a spa]iilor. Mobilierul, finisajele [i culorile subliniaz` aplecarea c`tre minimalism.

On the bank of lake Grivi]a, a white, compact and slender volume, smartly cut, easily stands out in its natural surroundings, granting panoramic views and generating enlightened tracks. Yet the generous site also brought about a series of urban constraints that led to a vertical development of the project. This context resulted in the differential treatment of the facades. On the side facing the easement road that borders a flank of the land, the choice went for a full facade, one that would grant the inhabitants a sense of intimacy. The facade facing the inner yard, with the pool, has been opened up through ample cuts that enable the construction to breathe. The interior, organised on three levels, encourages a natural and easy use of the space. While the ground floor is dedicated to daytime activities, the first floor hosts the bedrooms and the second floor is assigned to a working space and hobby studio. On each of these levels, an adjoining terrace successfully completes the geometry and offers different perspectives on the lake. The key element of the house is the spectacular stairway below the luminary, which openly crosses each level with an elegant profile. The furniture, finishing materials and colours highlight a bias towards minimalism. With the use of light and ethereal colours – white and shades of beige – the house is built in a purely Mediterranean spirit. Opaque surfaces blend with polished ones, lending the interior design a dynamic and vibrant appearance. The upper floor, possibly the most impressive one, is illuminated through a series of circular cut-outs, in stark contrast with the prevailing right angles.

The home’s young beneficiaries wished to live in an urban environment, but retain the advantages offered by a house - a garden and a direct connection to the outside, as well as a greater flexibility in dividing the interiors. Determined, when the opportunity arose, they bought a house with a basement, ground floor and a first floor, with a footprint of merely 38 sqm and a yard of 100 sqm, built in the ‘40s in a residential area with many similar buildings. After the consolidation works and the replacement of installations, the main volume was clad in white polished metal, and the simple, geometric composition was highlighted through a series of black framings that stand out on the facade. As a counterpoint, the two access volumes to the terrace are coated in iroko wood, suggesting the connection between nature and the state of relaxation. Between these two lies the inner space, connected through a balanced staircase, with floating steps and a minimalist metallic handrail that highlights, through indirect lighting, the central element of exposed concrete. A modern kitchen, designed in a cold-warm contrast, and a more technical space are located in the demi basement, while at the upper floor lays the living room – an elegant and comfortable space. The plan of the second floor has been solved in a rather special formula: since the initial space didn’t allow for a bigger shower, the latter was eventually placed in the bedroom and adorned creatively. The furniture, built in a rather restrained chromatic register, with a series of well-placed accents, was entirely designed by the team of architects and custom made, completing the image.

Placed on the banks of the Danube, in Or[ova, this house emerges as an important landmark in the architectural landscape of the area. With a volumetric composition and an innovative inner geometry of space, the project meets both the constraints of the site and the specific requirements of the beneficiary. With a ground floor placed in the underground, the construction’s cornice reaches a height of fewer than 8m compared to the natural terrain’s quota, which produces a minimum impact on the environment and lends a more intimate feel to the private areas. Thus the four bedrooms, each with its own bathroom and dressing, along with the wine cellar, are located on the buried ground floor. The first floor, on the other hand, is comprised of the house’s public spaces, namely the spectacularly grand living room (172 sqm) and the kitchen. However, not only the upstairs rooms enjoy great views: the wide declivity of the terrain uncovers the volume’s ground floor, facing the water surface, and thus unfolds new perspectives on the landscape. The two parallel wings are connected through a linking volume, opening on the sides towards two inner yards, a solution that enables the natural lighting of the whole ground floor. The house’s sculptural shape and the game of textures on the finishing materials led to a more discreet approach of the secondary building wing, designed as the administrator’s residence. This is, in turn, buried through embankments of grassy terrain, while the apparent facade is fully plated with the same stone found on the ground floor areas of the main building.

This project’s premises were the placement in a protected area and the beneficiary’s desire to enjoy a sheltered and intimate house, while still firmly grounded in the urban lifestyle. The solution offered by the team of architects meets these requirements with a lot of creativity and coherence, taking full advantage of the site’s configuration. Thus, the geometry and land orientation, with an elongated Northern side, facilitated the shaping of an inner yard, which not only enables the natural lighting of the house but also connects all the spaces and meets the need for refuge from the urban congestion. On the other hand, in order not to completely lose the connection to its vicinities, the building’s last level, where the office and the lobby are fitted with wide glazing and the terrace has a significant size, ensures a 270° panorama on what Bucharest has best to offer: a landscape blending rooftops, tree crowns, gardens and remnants of orchards. The quality of the interior environment, an important objective of the project, is due foremost to the direct link between the inner yard and the indoor spaces. Arranged around the yard, the living room, kitchen, hallways, a few bedrooms and baths, all enjoy the daylight that penetrates the completely glazed facades and implicitly a permanent connection to the outdoor. The project doesn’t look for the spectacular at all costs, but aims to understand the nature of the place it inhabits and thus tries to answer the client’s requirements in a way that doesn’t interfere with whatever is left of the authenticity of the neighbourhood.

An example of contemporary architecture perfectly fitted in the angle of the scenery, the Hajdó house offers practical and imaginative solutions for a slope, incorporating the body of the house in the terrain’s angle. Placed on the Northern flank, offering a view on the city below and the mountains ahead, the blueprint of the house is organized around the terrace, which has a South-Eastern orientation, following the pattern of the traditional household organized around the yard. Both the exterior and the inner terraces, as well as the common spaces on the interior, closely follow the topography and the land orientation, while the intimate spaces and annexes are delimited through partition walls and a setting that breaks the rhythm of the slope, in cantilever. The living room and kitchen open towards the terrace through a wide glazing, partially shaded during the summer and enjoying a considerable thermal input during winter, through high quality insulation. The exterior terrace and the immediate vicinities come as a continuation of the daily trajectory, rending fluidity to movement and to the relation between the inside and out. In the same line of space continuity emerges the green roof, also on a slope, closely reflecting the topography of the land. All materials are locally sourced, bringing an added coherency to the sustainable approach highlighted by the green roof. Relying on a juxtaposition of wood and natural stone on the facade, the chromatic closely follows neutral shades, contributing to the very integration of the construction in the landscape.

Placed in Bu[teni, at the foot of the Caraiman massif, this two storey house rejoices in the spectacle of the area’s natural landscape, which engages it in an elegant and dynamic dialogue. Thus, the construction is defined by an irregular plan, moulded around the land’s shape and by a slim, energetic volume in full agreement with the surroundings, capturing the spectacular perspectives offered by these. The building itself is situated on the southern side of the lot. The three main volumes are aligned to its southern, eastern and north-eastern sides, maintaining a withdrawal of at least 3 m from the property limits and making room for a covered parking space for three cars. The access area is marked by a windfang reinterpreted in a contemporary key. The ground floor contains the day areas – the living room and dining room with an open kitchen, a series of technical and storage areas, for example the pantry and the space accommodating the boiler, as well as a jacuzzi, with the adjacent shower and lavatories. A generous terrace, with a panoramic view, completes the day area. The first floor hosts the night time spaces – three bedrooms, each with its own bath, one of them with a terrace access, while the second floor is dedicated to sports and leisure activities. The volume that houses the pool is oriented like a periscope towards the Caraiman massif, thus offering a modern and elegant touch to one of the defining structures in the area – The Cross of the Heroes.
