A ciência é uma obra coletiva, que pretende compreender o mundo. O trabalho desenvolvido no IGC tem contribuído significantemente para o avanço internacional da ciência. A educação, em particular a educação científica, é o mais seguro de todos os investimentos para um mundo melhor. Nesta área, o IGC também já deu o seu contributo; em 1969, introduziu a educação pós-graduada em Portugal e gerações de estudantes iniciaram no IGC o seu compromisso com a ciência. Ao longo dos últimos 17 anos, o IGC tem sido responsável por vários programas de doutoramento que são hoje conhecidos em todo o mundo e usados como exemplo de inovação e excelência.

O Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC) celebra, em 2011, 50 anos desde a sua criação pelo Conselho de Administração da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (FCG), a 19 de julho de 1961. Para nós, cientistas, esta é uma excelente ocasião para celebrar, uma vez que o instituto permitiu as maiores contribuições da Fundação para a ciência, um dos seus fins estatutários.
É minha convicção que, para além das publicações e teses de doutoramento, a mais importante contribuição do IGC para a ciência em Portugal, nos anos recentes, está relacionada com uma nova dinâmica que este instituto introduziu na comunidade científica e nas instituições locais. O IGC promoveu alteração e mobilidade, estabeleceu uma autonomia científica e financeira completa dos jovens investigadores e responsabilizou as instituições no que respeita aos equipamentos e serviços de apoio científico. Durante muitos anos, o IGC foi essencialmente o único local em todo o país onde cientistas dedicados a tempo inteiro à ciência conduziam a sua investigação em completa autonomia para o bem da ciência. Muitos departamentos de universidades e instituições em Portugal acolhem atualmente cientistas que são alumni do IGC, para além das centenas de estudantes educados sob a responsabilidade do IGC que estão agora a trabalhar em locais espalhados por todo o país. Tudo isto contribuiu, particularmente nos últimos 10 anos, para uma dramática alteração na ciência em Portugal. Gostaria de pensar que o exemplo do IGC contribuiu para esta evolução. Science is a collective enterprise that aims to understand the world. The work carried out at the IGC has significantly contributed to the progress of science worldwide. Education, particularly if science-based, is the safest of all investments for a better world. Also here, the IGC has given its contribution: in 1969, it introduced graduate education in Portugal, and generations of students started their commitment to science here. Throughout the last 17 years, the IGC has been responsible for a handful of graduate programmes that are today known all over the world, and often used as example of innovation and excellence.
It is my conviction, however, that beyond publications and doctoral theses, the most important contribution of the IGC to Portuguese science in recent times relates to the new dynamics that the institute introduced into the local scientific community and institutions. The IGC has promoted turnover and mobility in the community, established full scientific and financial autonomy of young investigators, as well as the responsibilities of institutions in terms of facilities and services. For many years, the IGC was essentially the only place in the whole country where fully dedicated scientists conducted research autonomously, for the sake of science. Moreover, many a science department at various Universities and research institutions in Portugal are now home to IGC alumni, besides the hundreds educated by the IGC, now working across the country and abroad. In 2011, the Institito Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC) celebrates 50 years, since its foundation by the Board of Trustees of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (FCG) on July 19, 1961. For us, scientists, this is a good reason to celebrate, as the Institute facilitated the major contributions of the Foundation to science, one of its four statutory goals.

CIÊNCIA IGC Em 2010 e 2011, o IGC foi classificado como uma das 10 melho-res Instituições Internacionais para doutorados trabalharem (fora dos EUA), no inquérito Anual da Revista Internacional The Scientist-Faculty of 1000. In 2010 and 2011 the IGC was ranked as one of the Top 10 international institutions to work for post-docs (non-USA), in the annual survey of The Scientist-Faculty of 1000.
O Presidente da República Portuguesa agraciou o Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência por ocasião do 50º aniversário da instituição, com o título de Membro Honorário da Ordem Militar de Sant’Iago da Espada. On its 50th anniversary, the President of the Portuguese Republic awarded to the IGC the title of Honorary Member of the Military Order of Sant’Iago da Espada.
The IGC is an international biomedical research and graduate training institute, dedicated to promoting multidisciplinary science of excellence and a new generation of scientific leaders.

The IGC was set up by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, in Portugal, in July 1961. The institute is part of the Oeiras Campus, home to several other basic and applied research centres in biology, biotechnology and chemistry, including the Associated Laboratory made up of the IGC, the Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica (ITQB), the Instituto de Biologia Experimental e Tecnológica (IBET) and the Chronic Diseases Research Centre (CEDOC).
Criado pela Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, em Portugal, em julho de 1961, o instituto faz parte do Campus de Oeiras, que acolhe vários centros de investigação fundamental e aplicada em Biologia, Biotecnologia e Química, incluindo o Laboratório Associado constituído pelo IGC, pelo Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (ITQB), pelo Instituto de Biologia Experimental e Tecnológica (IBET) e pelo Centro de Estudos de Doenças Crónicas (CEDOC).
The town of Oeiras, where the institute is located, is just 20km from Lisbon, on the coastline. The IGC is within walking distance from the beach, and there is easy public transport access to Lisbon. The IGC’s parent organisation, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, hosts both leading arts exhibitions, as well as a world class concert season.
O município de Oeiras, onde o IGC se situa, está localizado na margem do rio Tejo, a apenas 20 km de distância de Lisboa. Muito perto da praia, tem excelentes acessos públicos para Lisboa e toda a Costa do Estoril. A Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, em Lisboa, tem a decorrer uma variedade de exposições de arte e de concertos internacionais de música.

Lars Jansen Investigador holandês que se juntou ao IGC, em 2008, para coordenar o Laboratório de Mecanismos Epigenéticos. A Dutch scientist who joined the IGC in 2008 to coordinate the Epigenetic Mechanisms Laboratory.
O IGC funciona como instituição de acolhimento e ”porta de entrada” em Portugal para investigadores e clínicos, nacionais e estrangeiros, com vista a criar e a reforçar o desenvolvimento de programas de investigação de excelência e a fortalecer a comunidade científica, em Portugal e no estrangeiro. The molecular mechanism whereby sickle cell hemoglobin confers survival advantage against malaria was identified at the IGC. These findings open the way to new therapeutic interventions against this disease. Os grãos de pólen (que contêm os gâmetas masculinos) comunicam com o pistilo (órgão sexual feminino) através de um mecanismo molecular que também ocorre no sistema nervoso de animais. Este estudo não só revela um novo mecanismo subjacente à reprodução em plantas como abre portas para uma nova linha de investigação sobre a conservação de vias de comunicação entre células em plantas e em animais. Pollen grains (that contains the plant male gametes) communicate with the pistil (their female counterpart) using a mechanism commonly observed in the nervous system of animals. This study not only reveals a new mechanism which underlies reproduction in plants but also opens an exciting new line of research of how cell-cell communication is conserved between cells in plants and in animals. Unusual suspect holds the secret for new approach to treat severe sepsis
Este estudo mostrou que o grupo heme, libertado pelos glóbulos vermelhos durante uma infeção, é responsável pela perda de funções dos órgãos dando origem à sépsis grave. Além disso, foi também descoberta uma forma eficaz de neutralizar o efeito tóxico do grupo heme através de uma molécula que existe naturalmente no organismo, a hemopexina. Estas descobertas poderão conduzir a uma nova estratégia de tratamento da sépsis grave. This study showed that the free heme group, released from red blood cells during infection, is the cause of organ failure, leading to the lethal outcome of severe sepsis. Moreover, the toxic effect of free heme group can be overcome by hemopexin, a naturally occurring molecule that neutralises free heme group. These findings open the door to new ways of monitoring and eventually treating severe sepsis. Foi elucidado um paradoxo com que os cientistas se deparam desde a descoberta dos telómeros (as pontas protetoras dos cromossomas): como é que os telómeros evitam que nas células os cromossomas se unam uns aos outros, assegurando deste modo a correcta distribuição de material genético durante a divisão celular. Estes resultados irão fornecer pistas importantes para a compreensão do envelhecimento celular e do cancro, e para futuras intervenções terapêuticas. A paradox that has puzzled scientists since the discovery of telomeres (the protective tips of chromosomes) was solved: how telomeres protect chromosomes from joining together, thus ensuring that chromosomes are properly distributed during cell division. This study provides insight into the initial stages of tumourigenesis, ageing and the development of future therapeutic interventions. Researchers from the IGC identified a balancing act between genes in determining the number of ribs in vertebrates, and showed that the production of both ribs and their associated muscles in the embryo is under the control of a single and coordinated genetic mechanism. RESISTÊNCIA A ANTIBIÓTICOS RESISTANCE TO ANTIBIOTICS
O efeito nefasto sobre uma bactéria, provocado pela resistência a um antibiótico pode ser suprimido pela aquisição de uma nova resistência a um outro antibiótico, tornando a bactéria multi-resistente. Este trabalho tem implicações diretas na evolução de bactérias multi-resistentes e na escolha do tipo de antibiótico a ser administrado para combater infeções bacterianas. The deleterious effect felt by bacteria, caused by resistance to an antibiotic can be overcome by acquiring a new resistance, to a different antibiotic, thus making the bacteria multi-resistant. These findings have direct implications in tackling the problem of multi-resistant bacteria and, subsequently, in the choice of the antibiotic administrated to patients. Reverse evolution in real-time

A team from the IGC turned back the clock on evolution in fruit fly to provide key insights into basic mechanisms of evolution, recreating natural selection in real-time, in the laboratory (rather than based on inferences from fossil records or from comparing existing natural populations). This study provided the first quantitative evidence for natural selection. IGC researchers provided insights into an old mystery in cell biology and offered up new clues to understanding cancer. They unravelled the mystery of how cells count the number of centrosomes, the structures that regulate the cell’s skeleton, control the multiplication of cells, and are often altered in cancer.

Os estudantes realizam quatro meses de cursos em módulos com formato tutorial, a cargo de cientistas do IGC e de convidados internacionais de conceituadas instituições científicas. Os programas de doutoramento do IGC são a continuação de um grande investimento na educação graduada que está a decorrer desde 1993. The IGC PhD Programmes are the continuation of a strong investment in graduate education that dates back to 1993.
Depois de terminarem o seu doutoramento, os estudantes do IGC, nacionais e estrangeiros, juntam-se a uma prestigiada rede de mais de 480 antigos estudantes, distribuídos por alguns dos melhores institutos de investigação mundiais, companhias e outras organizações relacionadas com a ciência. Dos 101 alumni do Programa de Doutoramento em Biologia e Medicina (PGDBM), que terminou em 2004, 69 regressaram a Portugal. Nos últimos 5 anos, os antigos estudantes que regressaram angariaram para o país quase 20 milhões de Euros em investimento estrangeiro (através de projetos de investigação e empresas de biotecnologia), o que ultrapassa largamente o investimento total no programa. After graduating at the IGC, our students, Portuguese or foreign, join a noteworthy alumni network of more than 480, spread out across world-leading research centres, companies and other science-related organisations. Of the 101 alumni from the PhD Programme in Biology and Medicine (PGDBM), which ended in 2004, 69 returned to Portugal and, in the last five years, have raised almost 20 million Euros in foreign investment (in research funds and biotechnology companies)-which largely exceeds the total investment made in the programme.

Obteve o seu Doutoramento em Biologia do Desen-volvimento e Genética pela Universidade de Londres, em 1999, e continuou os seus estudos de pós-doutoramento na University College London. Em 2002 começou o seu grupo de investigação no IGC e, em 2004, tornou-se responsável por um laboratório no Instituto de Medicina Molecular (IMM), em Lisboa. Em 2011 mudou-se para o Centro de Estudos de Doenças Crónicas (CEDOC), em Oeiras. António Jacinto started as a student of the 1st year of the PGDBM, in 1993. He obtained a PhD in Developmental Biology and Genetics from the University of London in 1999 and pursued his post-doctoral studies at University College London. In 2002 António Jacinto set up his research group at the IGC and in 2004 became a group leader at the Institute of Molecular Medicine (IMM), in Lisbon. “Gene Express Lda. was set up in 2004 with the aim of providing expert services for research and diagnostics based on Affymetrix high-density DNA array (GeneChip) technology. Cada grupo do IGC é responsável por assegurar o financiamento dos seus projetos de investigação. Each IGC research group is responsible for ensuring funding for their research projects and group members. Researchers are supported by the Research Funding Affairs Team in identifying the best-suited funding opportunities, in order to maximize available government and private funding, from various national and international programmes.

O que descobrirmos poderá servir de base a novas terapias mais acessíveis para combater os efeitos graves que a infeção com Plasmodium provoca em crianças. Esperamos poder concretizar estas aplicações durante a segunda fase de financiamento.” ‘This initial funding provided by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will allow us to put our hypothesis of an alternative form to block malaria infection to the test. It is a huge recognition of my research group’s work, and also of the increasing international excellence of scientific research in Portugal.” Mónica Dias Coordenadora do Laboratório de Regulação do Ciclo Celular do IGC, esteve entre os 17 jovens selecionados pela European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO) e recebeu também um financiamento do Conselho Europeu de Investigação. Principal Investigator of the Cell Cycle Regulation Laboratory at the IGC, one of the 17 Young Investigators selected by the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO) and also awarded a prestigious ERC Starting Independent Project Grant.
