Message from Head of School Dear IGBIS Parents and Community Members, It’s hard to believe that there are only two more weeks until the Winter/Christmas/New Year holidays with lots of exciting activities still to take place in school. The 24 Hour Race was a tremendous success. Over 900 people attended the event including teams of runners, chaperones, school staff, parents and volunteers. We are very proud of all the students who took part, especially organisers Esha Mardikar, Ernest Ng (graduating class of 2018), Andrea Koid, Clarissa Teh, Josh Wihlborg, Isabelle Yap, Nur Shahidah Azmi and Hannah Newman, who were all on the student organising committee. We are also very thankful for the support from school staff, particularly Julie Arcidiacono, and the parent community, especially Wei Ling Poon, who coordinated sponsors and donations. Many others came into school over the weekend to supervise students and help out at the PVO stall. The committee managed to raise over RM200,000 to help in the fight against human trafficking.
Inclusion has been a focus for this month with our Student Services team leading workshops for parents and staff. Next week a series of lunchtime activities are organised as part of Inclusive Schools Week, to highlight inclusion with our elementary school students. Highlights for next week will be the secondary school drama productions. One of these, The Real Face by Hannah Newman, is entirely student-led and supported. Our final day of school before the holiday will feature the Christmas Assembly and Holiday Bazaar.

News from Secondary School As we expected, the 24 Hour Race was a tremendous success this past weekend. I am so proud of all the participants and the organisers, for their fine efforts over the weekend. In speaking with several staff who are new to IGBIS as well as visitors, everyone marvelled at the size of the event and the ability of our students to plan, lead and execute such a large-scale event. We ended up with some very tired students on Monday morning, but I think they enjoyed themselves! This upcoming week we turn our attention towards another exciting area of the school - the performing arts. A variety of events will be taking place this week in a showcase of the talents of students in the performing arts at IGBIS. We are looking forward to two productions on Thursday, December 6th. Mr Cant and his Grade 10 Drama students will be performing Antigone at a matinee for students and then again at 5pm for the IGBIS
Community. This will be followed by a student-led production "The Real Face" at 7pm. As well on Thursday, there will be musical lunchtime performances, organised by our performing arts committee. The week in general will be a great celebration of the arts at IGBIS and an important reminder of the diversity of talent amongst our student body and staff. I remind all parents that there will be a Kopitiam this Friday, December 7th. Please come join us to ask questions and/or learn more about your child's education. Best regards,

Message from the 24 Hour Race KL 2018 Executive Director Dear supporters of the 24 Hour Race, I’m writing to you on behalf of the Organising Committee of the 24 Hour Race KL 2018 to, firstly, thank you for the immense support you have given us by way of your kind donations to the race. I’m pleased to report that the event was a resounding success, and would not have been possible without your help. As such, we would like to invite you to a celebration of the race’s success at 9:00am on Wednesday, 5th December at the PVO room on Level 2. Additionally, the Organising Committee would like to share the details of our finances pertaining to the use of parent donations for operational

costs. If you would be interested in finding out more about this, we will be holding a meeting before the celebration, from 8-9am in the PVO room as well. Thank you once again for all the help you have given us with the 24 Hour Race, and we hope to see you soon! Kind regards,

News from Elementary School Next week we will be celebrating Inclusive Schools Week. This is an initiative started in the United States of America but is gaining traction internationally. This year we will be the only school in Malaysia to take part and we are excited to do so, as we continue to strive to appreciate the diversity of our school community. The theme this year chosen by the Inclusive Schools Network is “Kaleidoscope of Friends.” ‘If you look into a kaleidoscope, you see an infinite array of patterns of brilliant light created by repeated reflection. Kaleidoscope comes from two Greek words: kalos, meaning “beautiful,” and eidos, “shape.” And indeed, education takes on a beautiful shape when all children belong and are valued as contributing members of the school community.’ Inclusive Schools Network 2018 That is the vision of inclusive education and one that is truly valued by IGBIS in our mission “To provide an inclusive learning community, embracing diversity by offering a challenging IB education which empowers its members to be caring global citizens”.

Cảm ƥn. No matter what language you use, a simple thank you is always appreciated. For the month of November, elementary school students have focused on what they are thankful for and how we can show our appreciation for others. We’ve read various stories from around the world illustrating characters that found something to be grateful

for regardless of the situation they were in. To culminate the unit, students were asked to reflect on their own lives and the things they are thankful for on a daily basis. Students responded with everything from IGBIS and their teachers to rainbows, funny faces, and cat parties! But most of all, many students responded that they were grateful to have families that love and support them (as well as cooking their favourite food) and their friends that play with them and help them when they need it. As we finish our first semester, please take some time to reflect with your children on the positive achievements and events that have taken place so far this year. We have an amazing IGBIS community and we have much to be thankful for.

A new look for Ms Sathia My name is Sathia Preeya Murugaiyan. I was inspired by my two sisters who shaved their heads back in 2012 for the Hope of Faith cancer awareness campaign in Singapore. At that time, I decided someday, when I am ready, I will do the same. This year, I found out my close friend of 15 years was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer. I decided that I will finally shave my head to show my support of her plight. My hair is being donated to the Lock of Hope Association. They will use it to make a wig for cancer patients. In PYP terms I am taking personal action and raising awareness about cancer among our community. Cancer is closely related to me as it involves a loved one. Action does speak louder than words. It is not something that I just said: I took the extra effort to actually do it. I feel that in my small way I am making a difference to someone else as a wig will be made from my hair.
