With a dramatic coastline boasting incredible views, it’s no surprise that La Jolla is one of the most popular beach destinations in California.

Surrounded on three sides by the sea and backed by the steep slopes of Mt. Soledad, La Jolla’s natural beauty, abundance of activities and upscale village lifestyle ensure that it lives up to its nickname as “the jewel” of San Diego. Coastal Jewel highlights the best attractions La Jolla has to offer, from beaches to museums, there is something for everyone.

so, what’s in a name?

The origin of how La Jolla (pronounced as La-HOY-a) got its name and history are unclear. No one knows where the name originated - whether it comes from the Spanish word “La Joya” (which means “the jewel”) or from the Indian term “Woholle” (meaning “hole in the mountains”), an appropriate name considering the caves and rock formations along La Jolla’s shoreline.

The name has appeared in all land grant and mission records since 1928 and in scattered documents at least back to 1870 when they appeared spelled “L-a-J-o-y-a”.

When Kumeyaay natives were in charge of the land they called La Jolla “Kulaaxuuy” which translates to “land of holes”. It is uncertain where this comes from. Some people believe the name comes from the sea-level caves visible from La Jolla Shores. Others think that the land around La Jolla may have had more holes around it before settlers sold the land. The topography of the land also suggests that because of the hills, there could have been more holes and uneven surfaces before colonization. There is uncertainty in what Kumeyaay culture was like, so perhaps the land topography had great significance to the culture and lifestyle. Or perhaps the land of holes had another context to the natives, outside of physical landscape.

Despite it’s unclear orgins, La Jolla remains the jewel of the coast, radiating in it’s natural beauty.

La Jolla is home to both Pacific harbor seals and California sea lions. As a San Diego native, I believe it is very important to know the difference between the two marine mammals.

Despite a similar outer appearance, there are some notable differences between the two.

La Jolla Cove & Underwater Park La Jolla Cove and Underwater Park are at the top of the list for must-see places in San Diego. The Cove and Underwater Park lay within the Ecological Reserve which protects marine life and helps it flourish.

The Cove offers spectacular views of the coast and the chance to experience wildlife up close in their environment. The California sea lions are locals on the shore and in the waters of La Jolla Cove, so you can see them in their natural habitat. At low tide, you can go tide pooling at the South end of the rock wall tunnel.

If you are feeling adventurous, head into the water to explore an underwater paradise. You can encounter the 500-foot underwater canyon, the seven sea caves, one of the most majestic kelp forests on earth, schools of Garibaldi fish, herds of leopard sharks, gray and humpback whales, and so much more. The best ways to view all of this beauty is by snorkeling, diving, or kayaking. Since there are rarely strong waves, La Jolla Cove and Underwater Park are great for children to play and open water swimming.

Windansea Beach

Windansea Beach is the ultimate surf spot surrounded by beautiful scenery and the historical “Surf Shack.” The underwater reefs cause a consistent and phenomonal surf break. This spot is considered sacred to many locals, so it is advised that you only enter the water if you are experienced and have good surfing ettiquite.

Three local surfers — Don Okey, Woody Ekstrom, and Fred Kenyon — built the iconic Surf Shack in 1947 for some “shade and aloha.” In 1998, the San Diego Historical Resources Board recognized the shack as an official historical landmark. The shack has been destroyed from storms and rebuilt a number of times by local surfers. While the shack is humble, it holds significance to the community of surfers and locals.

Birch Aquarium Perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Birch Aquarium features more than 60 habitats of fishes and invertebrates from the cold waters of the Pacific Northwest to the tropical waters of Mexico and beyond. An oceanographic museum showcases research discoveries by Scripps Oceanography scientists on climate, earth, and ocean science and includes interactive elements.

Explore interactive exhibits and come face to face with exciting creatures including a rescued Loggerhead Sea Turtle, a Giant Pacific Octopus, Leopard Sharks and jellies. Don’t miss the two-story Giant Kelp Forest or the outdoor touch pools that feature stunning ocean views and the opportunity to get hands-on with juvenile sharks and rays as well as sea stars, sea cucumbers and more.
