Baltic Sphagnum Peat Moss The most important raw material for potting soils is peat. Each year millions of cubic meters of peat are used in Europe that come from the Baltic States, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Poland, Germany, Ireland etc. The types of peat moss differ from country to country because of the different types of Sphagnum and the different climates.

The richest peat bogs are located in Baltic region, particularly in Lithuania, Latvia. Baltic peat moss is the highest quality raw material with exceptional rich consist. Extracted sphagnum peat moss is undergoing the milling process and then is stored in bulk or packed in polyethylene bags for further sales worldwide. Sphagnum is a genus of between 150-350 species of mosses commonly called peat moss, due to its prevalence in peat bogs. These pale-green to deep-red plants can hold large quantities of water inside their cells; some species can hold up to 20 times their dry weight in water.

Because peat moss is a natural product, there are degrees of variation and not all peat moss grades are adequate for a particular blend you will find on the market. Field grades of peat moss are screened, blended and processed to achieve specific physical properties for market grades and intended use. Market grades are based on coloration of the peat moss and the particle size passing through different mesh screen sizes (10, 20, 50 and 100 mesh screens).
