he friends, family, and supporters of Victoria Brianna Sanchez will be holding a Car Show, Dinner, and Dance fundraiser at the American Legion Post 155 in Colton on Saturday September 12. Sanchez, 14, is diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome and Protein-losing enteropathy. The former has left her with breathing, heart, pulse, and skin complications and has led to the development of the latter disease (condition of the gastrointestinal tract that results in a net loss of protein and potassium from the body). Sanchez’s cousin Paula Flores said she decided to reach out to the community in hopes of garnering both financial and moral support. Last year during Christmas, with the help of the Make A Wish Foundation, Mayor Richard De La Rosa and the Colton Police and Fire Departments, the Colton High School freshman was able to go on a ride along. “The community has been amazing throughout this whole ordeal,” explained Flores. “People have been helping spread awareness about the event by passing out flyers, sharing the information on social media, and by reaching out to other key contacts. People love Victoria, some of which don’t even know her. Yet, they know the importance of a human life--a young life.” The day long event will commence with a Car Show Fundraiser cont. on next page
s summer winds down, the Colton Police Department is ramping up its enforcement efforts as part of a national crackdown on drunk driving. The 18-day, high-visibility campaign, Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, is a partnership with the California Office of Traffic Safety to curb impaired driving and save lives. August 21September 7 (Labor Day), law enforcement partners in San Bernardino County, across the state and nationwide will show zero tolerance for drunk driving. Increased state and national messaging about the dangers of driving drunk, coupled with checkpoints and increased officers on the road, aim to drastically reduce the toll of drunk driving. The Colton Police Department kicks off Friday night with special DUI Saturation Patrols. On Friday August 28th we will deploy a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint in the City of Colton. The DUI enforcement saturation patrols will continue through Monday, September 7th with more DUI enforcement on various nights throughout the month. NHTSA data shows that repeat offenders are an especially dangerous facet of the drunk-driving problem. In the month of August from 2009-2013, of the drunk drivers involved in fatal crashes, almost 1 out of 10 (8 percent) of them had already been convicted of at least one drunk-driving offense. Funding for this special campaign is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
