More than 80% of the Lebanese alumni live outside the country, but they do come back on every vacation possible. Lebanese usually take jobs in the Gulf region, and many of them spend their weekends in Beirut. That’s why organizing events is not an easy job for the club; we have to find the right time to gather as many alumni as possible.
Más del 80% de los alumni libaneses viven fuera de su país, aunque intentan volver siempre que tienen unos días de descanso. Los libaneses suelen trabajar en la región del Golfo y muchos de ellos pasan los fines de semana en Beirut. Por eso el club no lo tiene fácil a la hora de organizar eventos; tenemos que encontrar las mejores fechas para que pueda asistir el mayor número posible de alumni.
Another challenge is to spread the word about an event. Facebook and emails are not enough anymore, so nowadays we are also using the newly developed IE Clubs application (clubs.ie.edu) to send out notifications.
Otro reto es correr la voz sobre el evento. Los emails y Facebook se nos han quedado pequeños, así que ahora también usamos la nueva aplicación de IE Clubs (clubs.ie.edu) para enviar información a los miembros.
We are always coordinating with our chapter in Madrid, making sure that those travelling from Beirut have people to support them once they land. Supporting new students is an important mission of the club, in addition to helping them with the logistics, so their landing is as comfortable as possible. We recently reached an agreement with the Instituto Cervantes in Beirut to offer newly accepted students a free Spanish session in which to teach them basic phrases they will have to use during their first weeks in Madrid. We have also established an excellent relationship with the Spanish Embassy in Beirut to facilitate the visa process.
Siempre nos coordinamos con el chapter de Madrid para garantizar que los que viajan desde Beirut tengan a alguien allí que les ayude nada más aterrizar. Ofrecer apoyo a los nuevos estudiantes es un objetivo primordial del club; también se les ayuda con la logística para que su llegada a Líbano sea lo más fácil y cómoda posible. Por otro lado, acabamos de alcanzar un acuerdo con el Instituto Cervantes en Beirut para ofrecer a los estudiantes que acaban de incorporarse una clase gratis donde aprendan el español básico que necesitarán para desenvolverse durante sus primeras semanas en Madrid. También hemos establecido una buena relación con la Embajada española en Beirut para gestionar la obtención de visados.
IE Lebanon Club has hosted professional panels that discussed several subjects related to Lebanon and the region. Networking events are also important to keep the alumni connected. We organize many events every year, including: Meet & Greet, Bar of the Month, Iftar and Christmas dinners. We also wanted to enlarge our network and meet more like-minded people residing in Lebanon. So we joined Alumni Central, which is a hub for Lebanese alumni from top international universities, and we partnered with them in several events. All of these events encouraged our members to join and even offer help for future events, so we recently formed committees of volunteers. The growing number of Lebanese alumni, and the events we carry out, help IE University news spread fast in Lebanese society. Five years ago most of the Lebanese people never heard of IE but now when they meet us they are impressed: “You are an IE graduate!” I feel proud to be part of the team that did this, and hopefully the IE name will always be on the top of the list of schools attended by Lebanese.

IE Lebanon Club ha organizado unos paneles en los que se ha tratado una serie de temas relacionados con Líbano y la región. Los eventos de networking juegan un papel importante para que los alumni se mantengan en contacto. El abanico de eventos que organizamos año tras año incluye, entre otros, Meet & Greet, Bar of the Month, Iftar y comidas de Navidad. También hemos querido ampliar nuestra red y conocer a otras personas residentes en Líbano con ideas afines a las nuestras. Por eso nos hemos sumado a Alumni Central, un punto de encuentro clave para los alumni libaneses de las principales universidades internacionales, y hemos colaborado con ellos en varios eventos. Todo esto ha animado a nuestros miembros a participar e incluso ofrecerse a ayudar en próximos proyectos, por lo que acabamos de formar unos comités de voluntarios. Gracias al número creciente de alumni libaneses y las actividades que llevamos a cabo, las noticias relacionadas con IE University ahora se difunden rápidamente por la sociedad libanesa. Hace cinco años eran muy pocos los libaneses que habían oído hablar de IE, pero ahora cuando nos conocen son conscientes de su mérito: “¡Te has graduado en IE!”, dicen con respeto. Me siento orgulloso de formar parte del equipo que ha conseguido esto; ojalá IE sea siempre una de las principales escuelas elegidas por los estudiantes libaneses.
