Jazz in the Pines a community effort

T

he town of Idyllwild provides a wonderful cadre of volunteers, over 300 strong, who help the Associates of Idyllwild Arts produce the festival, now in its nineteenth year. The festival is the main fundraiser for the Associates. Our wonderful and dedicated volunteers join with many community organizations to bring this great weekend of jazz. In appreciation of the great efforts of the volunteers, they receive a Volunteer Thank-

Perhaps more than any other business or organization on the Hill, the Idyllwild Inn has been a key part of Idyllwild’s history.

The site where the first Inn was built housed the Idyllwild Sanitorium, built in 1901 by the California Health Resort Company. In 1903, the sanitorium burned down and a hotel,The Bungalow, was built in its place. Soon after construction, LA real estate investors bought The Bungalow and renamed it “Idyllwild Among the Pines.”They sold it in 1917 to brothers Claudus and Albert Emerson.

The Inn thrived in the 1920s. It had tennis courts and a golf course (read more on page 28). It attracted celebrities and became a popular Southern California destination. But when the Great Depression hit, the Emersons lost all of their holdings.

Dr. Paul Foster In 1976, after the old Inn bought the property, ceased to exist, the Froehlichs but it burned down began using the name Idyllwild again in 1945. It was Inn Motel & Cottages. What, no golf course?

T

ourists today expect to find at least one golf course at almost any vacation destination. Idyllwild is unusual in not having one—just one more feature that sets our village apart—but it has not always been a golf-free zone.

In fact, the very first big resort here in Strawberry Valley, the Idyllwild Sanatorium, which opened in 1901, proclaimed “golf links unequaled” in its first ad. Its successor, the Idyllwild Inn, also built a crude course in 1914, but it was during the Roaring Twenties that the game began to thrive here.

Before 1917, the valley was mostly owned by Los Angeles developers Frank Strong and George Dickinson. Then they sold off the Inn and 1,000 surrounding acres to San Jacinto banker Claudius Lee Emerson, but retained Fern Valley and the heights on South Ridge, including Saunders Meadow. What they didn’t anticipate was Emerson’s entrepreneurial

genius as a rival developer.

In his grand plan to turn Idyllwild into a settled community, Emerson saw golf as a plus. As part of his pitch to both tourists and potential lot buyers he immediately announced plans to upgrade the Inn’s existing course.

By 1923, Emerson’s booming village prodded Strong and Dickinson into hiring Pine Cove developer Walter Wood to subdivide and market their own lots. To stay ahead of the competition, Emerson resurrected his still unfulfilled

promise to create a first-rate golf course.

He opened his Country Club Subdivision overlooking Tollgate Road and began work on a new 9-hole course on the valley floor along Strawberry Creek above Camp Emerson.

Wood retaliated by hiring away Emerson’s resident manager of the Idyllwild Inn to help open a competing course on Saunders Meadow in 1925.

According to Louise Cole, whose father joined the club, and whose brother patrolled the rough daily collecting lost balls, the fairways were groomed by merely removing a few small trees and wild rose bushes, leaving the native grass uncut.

The “greens” at first may well have been no more than raked gravel.

To compensate, Wood built an elegant clubhouse and swimming pool and contracted with Idyllwild’s pioneer craftsman, Hal Holcomb, to

fill it with rustic furnishings.

Upon its grand opening in 1927, the clubhouse was immediately a social center rivaling Emerson’s Idyllwild Inn. Emerson quickly countered by building the Idyllwild Plunge, an instantly popular attraction for both Inn guests and resident swimmers.

He simultaneously raised the ante by announcing plans to expand his new course to 18 holes, dam Strawberry Creek for a lake, and add an aircraft landing field for an upscale clientele.

I n a c t u a l i t y, Wo o d ’s operation was a shoestring affair. Its social activities were sustained by wives of club members, who soon tired of frequent hostessing.

Unpaid bills piled up, and creditors became steadily less cordial in their reminders.

MTN. BIKING With approximately 200 miles of dirt roads and more than 40 miles of trails open to bicyclists, the San Jacinto Mountains around Idyllwild offer a number of experiences for mountain bikers of all levels.

For that reason, the local mountain trails have become extremely popular among riders looking for challenging routes and breathtaking scenery.

Local trails provide mountain bikers with a diverse selection of roads from which to choose. The Forest Service has mountain biking regulations in the San Jacinto and Santa Rosa mountains to ensure the safety of riders and the protection of natural resources. Bicycles may be ridden on established roads and trails within the mountains; however, bikes are not allowed within the San Jacinto or Santa Rosa wilderness areas or along the Pacific Crest Trail.

If parking a vehicle on Forest Service land in the areas of Thomas Mountain and Black Mountain, Lake Hemet and Humber Park, visitors must display an Adventure or Recreation Pass in their vehicle.

BIKING • Coyote Run: Beginning at the north end of Hurkey Creek County Park and ending at the waterfalls on Hurkey Creek, this easy and scenic ride is about two miles on a dirt road closed to vehicles. Parking is available at the day-use area within the Hurkey Creek Campground or outside the park.

FISHING LAKE HEMET

Lake Hemet, the largest lake in the San Jacinto Mountains, is a fisherman’s paradise, stocked throughout most of the year with rainbow trout by the State Department of Fish and Game. Natural channel catfish, big-mouth bass and bluegill also provide good sport fishing.

Located at an elevation of 4,340 feet, the lake is 1-1/2 miles long, 1/2 mile wide and 135 feet deep when full.

The lake is about 4 miles east of Mountain Center on Highway 74 in Garner Valley. It is owned and operated by the Lake Hemet Municipal Water District.

Two public recreation areas are on the lake’s shores.

The U.S. Forest Service maintains a picnic area for day use only along the north shore.

The entrance is west of Lake Hemet Market, on Highway 74.You do need an Adventure or Recreation Pass to park in the Forest Service area. See the section, “Adventure Pass,” on page 30 in this magazine for more information.

The water district also owns and operates the Lake Hemet Campground. It has been open to the public on a fee basis for more than 30 years along the north shore, toward the eastern end of the lake.

The campground also encourages family recreation, with a water playground, camping, picnic areas, boating and kayaking along with fishing. No swimming or water skiing is allowed because they conflict with fishing.

Lake Hemet offers scenic mountain views and quiet lakeside moments to many visitors to the Hill area.

LAKE FULMOR

About 10 miles north of Idyllwild on Highway 243, Lake Fulmor is stocked with trout by the Department of Fish and Game from spring through summer.

The 2-acre serene lake on Forest Service property offers good trout fishing during spring, summer and fall months. Occasionally, the lake freezes over in winter.

Lake Fulmor is on National Forest land. The lake provides day use activities for the public. Fishing and picnic areas with grills, an encompassing trail that crosses a bridge, and beautiful surroundings make this an enjoyable spot for locals and tourists.

A parking area is across the highway from the lake so use caution when crossing to and from the lake.

You do need an Adventure or Recreation Pass to park.

Strawberry Creek is the only stream where fishing is allowed in the San Jacinto Mountains.

California Department of Fish and Game no longer stocks fish in Fuller Mill, North Fork and Dark Canyon creeks because the streams are suitable habitat for a protected species, the mountain yellow-legged frog.

The fish-planting program is financed through fishing licenses and stamp sales. Licenses are required for anglers age 16 and over and there is a daily bag limit of five trout during the year-round season.

One-year licenses are available to California residents at Village Hardware and Lake Hemet Market.

Equipment and bait can be purchased at Lake Hemet Market, Pine Cove Market,Village Hardware and Village Market. Fairway Market and Forest Lumber also stock some supplies.

THOUSAND TRAILS

Thousand Trails’ seasonal fishing pond is stocked with trout and catfish. Fishing permits are only $10 and free for 6-years-old and under with an adult permit.

Equipment and bait can be purchased at the store. Fish cleaning station located at the pond.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 28 In desperation, Wood reorganized and, in 1928, staged another grand opening as the “new” Mount San Jacinto Golf Club. But by 1930 it sank into foreclosure and was sold to a military academy as a summer camp. Only the clubhouse survived, today serving as the dining hall at Astrocamp.

Meanwhile, Emerson was riding high, earning a widespread reputation for “the Mile-High Golf Course,” and employing a club pro to run tournaments attracting the state’s best talent.

Following through with his expansion plan, in 1929 he bought the rest of the lower valley (today’s Idyllwild Arts Academy campus). Alas for him, the Wall Street crash was only months away, and his financing was stretched to the breaking point.

Although the golf program continued to thrive throughout the 1930s, the Great Depression undermined the Inn and real estate operations, leaving Emerson bankrupt by 1938.

World War II’s travel restrictions were the death knell for golf in Idyllwild. The country club lay unused until postwar developer Jerry Johnson bought it up, then sold it to Palm Springs developers for subdivision. Aside from a popular miniature golf course in the recreation complex that grew up around the Idyllwild Plunge during the 1950s, golfing here had become only a memory.

Brief hope for a revival rose in 1960 with announced plans for the Tahquitz Lake Golf Club, a resort community near Foster Lake on Dutch Flat, between Idyllwild and Pine Cove. The course opened in late 1961, but the idea of full-scale development met stiff local opposition. The club folded by the mid-1960s, and that was the last hurrah for golfing in Idyllwild.

Festivals CONTINUED FROM PAGE 21 Heading into its fourth year is the Idyllwild Independent Festival of Cinema. The 2012 festival was called the best yet, with better films and variety. Most films are shown at Idyllwild’s historic Rustic Theatre. This festival takes place in January. For specific dates, visit idyllwildfestivalof cinema.com.

The current film festival is not the first to make a mark on the Hill.

An International Film Festival took place (with some gaps) in the fall from 1983 until 1999.

Idyllwild Arts hosts a Chamber Music Festival since 2001 at the campus. The festival features lectures and concerts and is free to the public. This year’s event starts on Aug. 6.

The academy also hosts a Native American Arts Festival, which started in 2007. It features lectures, exhibits, classes and performances. This weeklong event starts July 2. For more information, visit idyllwildarts. org.

Other memorable traditions that are still celebrated are centered around holidays, such as the Rotary-sponsored Fourth of July Parade, which started in the early 1950s as a festival called Idle Days. In 1965 The Idyllwild Bluegrass Invitational of 1974 drew capacity crowds to the parade was incorporated, which ended with a picnic at Town Hall.

The parade route event became twice a year and was moved to Idyllwild County Park. is the same now (starting at Fern Valley Corners), but it ends now in the TOWN CRIER FILE center of town. The May festival was such a success, in fact, a second event was added in September 1975, but was moved to a larger venue: Idyllwild County Park. Now Idyllwild had two Bluegrass Invitational events a year IDYLLWILD 12TH ANNUAL and the local Jaycees club offered to sponsor the event. It continued to be a success through 1978.
