Student undergraduate speaker shares advice and IU memories

In 2016, 19,477 students between 18 to 71 years old graduated from IU campuses, according to IU’s website. This year, undergraduate and graduate students will undertake commencement May 4 and 5. For Bloomington stores, graduation weekend is an event they prepare for. Located on Kirkwood Avenue just down from the Sample Gates, the gift store Greetings sells apparel, IU merchandise and other trinkets. The store owner used to say graduation weekend, like the first IU football home game of the season, was enough to keep the store running for the following months, employee Arman Reihani said. “Overall, it’s a pretty big increase from a normal day,” Reihani said. “We also have the benefit of graduation being so close to Little 5. It’s one of those things, months down the road, we have to prepare for.” Reihani said the store stocks certain items during graduation

weekend that it doesn’t normally. “We’ve been getting alumni apparel, which we don’t normally get,” Reihani said. “We get some IU gift-type stuff, and postcards, because people like to get pictures of the Sample Gates.” A short walk down Kirkwood to Tracks Music & Videos shows much of the same IU alumni apparel in the window. Tracks general manager Jay Wilkin said graduation weekend brings sales equivalent to a Saturday baseball game at home, except there are three days of it. “It’s a good weekend,” Wilkin said. “It’s the only good weekend in May. Right after, business is going to fall off the cliff for that second and third week, until public school is out.” Wilkin said along with alumni shirts and sweatshirts, other products also sell well. “You do sell more of the stuff we call novelties, stickers and barware, and glasses and license plates,” Wilkin said. “Maybe more sweatshirts than you would exSEE STORES, PAGE 7

Each IU School will have a senior recognition From IDS reports

cpdrummo@iu.edu | @cdrummond97

Eashan Kumar has kept himself busy while at IU. The graduating senior, who will have a dual degree in neuroscience and international studies along with minors in chemistry, psychology and Spanish, was selected as the 2018 student speaker for spring commencement. Kumar grew up in Munster, Indiana, and said he came to IU because of how affordable the school was and the quality of the programs it offered. Prior to Saturday’s spring commencement at Memorial Stadium, Kumar spoke with the Indiana Daily Student about his time at IU and what he took away most from his college experience. What was your life story prior to coming to IU? I have an older sister, younger brother. I’m the oldest of a bunch

of cousins. Our family story is that my grandma came here in like 1970 to work as a nurse while she left my grandpa, mom and uncle back in India. So she like came here to work to pay money for their airplane ticket. My mom came here, she was raised here, she moved here when she was like two with them. My dad is from India, they met in India. I’m from in northwest Indiana, that’s where my family’s always been, my grandma moved there, my mom was raised there. Came to IU because of how affordable it was, good program, friends were here. My dad owned a liquor store, and he sold it, he works as a construction worker for a union with road testing and my mom was a nuclear medicine tech, but she quit that and became a realtor. What was the thought behind your diverse group of majors and minors? I guess I’m interested in a lot of different things. I came into college

as a philosophy major, actually, and then I realized that’s not what I wanted to study. I knew I wanted to do something with science, my friends told me like neuroscience was one of the best majors for premed. I’ve always been someone who’s interested in a lot of things whether it’s been language or philosophy or math or history, so international studies, I added that after I studied abroad. I felt that was the most interdisciplinary major in terms of, you get a language concentration, a regional concentration, you get a thematic concentration and you take classes from like a wide variety of different disciplines. I was in Barcelona, did the advanced liberal arts program. Took two classes at the University of Barcelona, two classes with the program and one internship. It was cool. I hope to use Spanish in my future. I can understand Hindi and SEE COMMENCEMENT, PAGE 7

'More of a marathon than a sprint' Undergraduate commencement speaker Paul Tash offers advice to the class of 2018 By Carley Lanich clanich@indiana.edu | @carleylanich

Paul Tash, chairman and CEO of the Tampa Bay Times and Times Publishing Co., will speak at the 2018 undergraduate commencement ceremony. Tash is an Indiana native and a 1976 IU graduate. A former chairman of the Pulitzer Prize Board, Tash told the Indiana Daily Student he can trace most Paul Tash good things that have happened in his life to his time at IU. His speech Saturday will offer advice to undergraduate students, as well as insight into the role of journalism as a civic service. Tash, once an editorin-chief of the Indiana Daily Student, spoke to the IDS about this and more as students look forward to Saturday morning’s ceremony at Memorial Stadium. What were some of your most memorable experiences at IU? I was editor-in-chief of the Indiana Daily Student, which I think was a terrific experience for responsibility for journalism, for a newspaper. It made me a better reporter because I had seen the job from a more general perspective, and it certainly helped prepare me for broader responsibility when that came, too. We worked hard and had a good time at the IDS. When I graduated in 1976, that was the year of the perfect season for the men’s basketball team. Scott May and Quinn Buckner and Bobby Wilkerson and that crowd won the NCAA Championship and went undefeated for the entire season, and I remember when they won that game, they beat Michigan in the

final game that year and the campus erupted in celebration, but I actually felt a little sense of let down because I knew my own time at IU was coming to an end, as well, that the pursuit of the championship had been where the thrill was and that the season had ended, even though it ended in triumph, it was also a sign that my own time at IU was winding down and I would be moving on. What advice do you have for students who are feeling that right now? My observation is, one, it’s entirely natural. It’s entirely natural. There may have been days at IU that

were less than what you would’ve liked, but overall these last four years have been a pretty good ride, and it’s a special time so there’s nothing at all wrong about feeling a little nostalgic about it even as you look ahead to what comes next. Nearing your graduation, what expectations did you have for entering your first job and the world beyond IU? I was very lucky because I had been picked for a scholarship, the Marshall Scholarship, to study at a British university for a couple years immediately upon my graduation from IU. So, I left IU, I had a

summer job back here at the newspaper, and then I went to Edinburgh in Scotland to begin a Marshall Scholarship for a couple of years. My entry into the real word was delayed a bit, so I didn’t go directly from IU into the working world. I would say my time at IU certainly prepared me for that well when I went into it. What advice do you have for students as they look ahead? Any words of advice for the future? I’m going to have a little advice as it related to journalism and democracy, which is sort of truth, justice and the American way, in my remarks Saturday

morning. On the more general advice, I would say that the world from here on out does not have the rhythm of a semester or an academic year, and as a student you could kind of pace yourself for the crescendo of activity, the sprint of a semester, and then recharge and go back at it. So you are moving from a rhythm of life and a calendar that sort of resets itself every four months, to one that is a marathon. So you’re not going to get a grade every three months now, and it’s not that quick sense of completion and accomplishment. That can be a bit of an adjustment.

It’s more of a marathon than a sprint. What do you hope students are learning about journalism as they look to enter the real world? Well, democracy depends on journalism and on an informed and enlightened citizenry, and journalism is an essential element of that, but, I will also say on Saturday, that the ultimate responsibility rests on us as Americans. Democracy depends on the ability to tell fact from fiction, and journalism can be a great civic asset in that, but it’s up to us to make sure we can tell.

'Do something you love': Hennessy shares advice By Cameron Drummond cpdrummo@iu.edu | @cdrummond97

As the executive chairman of Alphabet, Google's parent company, John Hennessy has been at the forefront of the world's technological shifts. During his time as the 10th President of Stanford University, Hennessy dedicated his life to higher education. A president emeritus of Stanford University, Hennessy will deliver the commencement address during IU's graduate

commencement ceremony May 4 in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. He will also receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree during the ceremony. Prior to the graduate commencement ceremony, Hennessy shared advice he would give to the graduating students with the Indiana Daily Student. What pieces of advice would you give to students who are about to graduate?

Do something you love: don't settle. Remember that the people you work with will be as important as the specific job you do. Think of your first real-world job as a learning opportunity. What do you hope to communicate to the graduating students in your speech Friday? I hope to convey that a willingness to take risks and to try doing new things can take you to places you never dreamed of. Furthermore, as you get older you will value

your relationships more and the positive things you do for others will grow in importance. What has education meant to your life, and what role do you believe higher education plays in society and the effect it can have on people? I believe deeply in the power of education to change lives. Higher education is the ladder of opportunity, it changes lives both for the graduate and for those she impacts. John Hennessy Cameron Drummond Editor-in-Chief Murphy Wheeler Managing Editor

‘STRAIGHTFORWARD

AMERICANISM’ Excerpts from Theodore Roosevelt's 1918 commencement address at IU On June 12, 1918, Theodore Roosevelt, former President of the United States, delivered the commencement address at IU. His address, entitled "Straightforward Americanism," came five months before U.S. involvement in World War I would come to an end. Now, nearly 100 years later, the Indiana Daily Student will publish excerpts from Roosevelt's address as the graduate and undergraduate classes of 2018 prepare to graduate from IU. "And I want to say at the outset that I don't think I have ever been at a more beautiful university commencement than this." "So, we stopped, and I just said a word to the men and women who had gathered there, and, friends, it was fine to look in their faces, the faces of the American type, of the type we like to think of as personifying what is best and truest in our country, of the type that is slow to anger, but that having been roused does not sink back until the end has been attained." "After the great strain of the heroic days of the Civil War, we permitted ourselves to sink back, we abandoned ourselves to a gross materialism rendered more noxious by a sham sentimental-

ity, and it needed something like this to bring us back to our true selves." "Let's hereafter treat each immigrant not merely as a labor unit but as the possible father of the American citizens with whom our children and children's children are to inherit this land." "If in good faith he shows himself to be an American, then it is an infamy to discriminate against him because of his creed or the country from which his fathers came." "The bulk of the men who in every great crisis made up the American armies have not been the men who wished for war. They weren't men who wished for war, they weren't men who wished to go as swashbucklers around the earth, picking a quarrel; they were men of peace, but there were things they loved more than peace." "Abraham Lincoln loved peace, but he loved the right, he loved the union, he loved liberty more than he loved peace." "I ask that we prepare in advance our giant but soft and lazy strength precisely because I don't wish to have to see us have to use it; and if we do have to use it, I wish

to see us use it with the utmost speed and efficiency." "I hold that a nation should show scrupulous regard for the rights of others and should instantly defend its own rights against aggression by others." "You wish your boy to avoid a brawl, to be ashamed of inviting a fight, of getting into needless trouble, but you also wish him to be able to hold his own and not to stand oppression and be able to protect his sister, his little wife, his mother, if the occasion arises. That is what you feel. Well, it is a good rule to tell him to impress upon him never to hit if he can avoid it, but never to hit soft." "Let it do all it honorably can to keep out of a war. When it has gone in, let it fight the war though." "But in my judgement, we need still more the institutions that teach the broad, cultural development which this nation needs more than it needs anything else. We need the kind of learning acquired not because it can be turned into money but because it is worth much more than money." Text transcript courtesy of the IU Archives

I also audited Arabic for a semester here, so yeah hopefully after college I’ll have more time to myself to learn more languages because I’ve always liked learning languages. What are your immediate and long-term plans after college? I’ve never been someone with a plan. I’ve taken it day by day, but as of now I’m doing Teach for America, so it’s a two-year commitment in Indianapolis. I’ve been teaching at IU since sophomore year and tutoring since freshman year. Just throughout my experiences here I’ve realized education is really at the crux of every like opportunity and success. My grandma came here for education, I would be nowhere without my high school education and my preliminary education back in Munster. I had a good school system. I think it’s a good way to kind of give back to the community and mold future citizens, also teaching is like the best way to learn as well. College is kind of full of distractions, I think teaching will get my head on straight and be more Type A because I’ve been too Type B.

PHOTOS BY TY VINSON | IDS

What advice would you give to the next freshman class? There’s a lot, man. Don’t overcommit yourself and don’t take yourself too seriously. Enjoy col-

be more popular. “I’ve been doing this a long time, and it’s still really hard to predict,” Wilkin said. “There’s 90-yearold grandmas, there’s 9-year-old babies. You just have to have the shelf as full as you possibly have it to start, and then react.” Wilkin and Reihani said their graduation sales are weather dependent. “Last year, rain put people off a little bit,” Wilkin said. “But it’s still good for hotels and restaurants.” Wilkin said the families that graduation brings to town make it a fun, positive environment. “I continue to get older, and all the students stay the same,” Wilkin said. “They always stay 18 to 22. It keeps me young.” lege. Be really open minded. It’s okay if you mess up the first couple times, just learn from it. IU has so many majors, clubs, do something you’re passionate about because you can’t fake passion. Be honest with yourself in terms of why you’re doing what you’re doing. Don’t try to please other people. You’ll find your community here if you’re just honest with yourself. What advice would you give to the graduating senior class? Cherish the memories of your friends here. Understand that everything you put into the world has a consequence, I guess the idea of karma. Make sure you’re doing good for the sake of doing good. IU has given people a wide variety of experiences and diversity and stuff so, I hope people learn from that and become a global citizen and kind of understand your place in the world and kind of your potential to make positive social impact, no matter what field you go into. What is your biggest takeaway from your time at IU? I’ve learned to like find balance, like saying no more, but while also being really open-minded, because I’m really experience-driven. So I guess just trying to balance in terms of time management, social life, work-life balance, studying. I guess that was my biggest lesson, how to manage my time, even though I’m still perfecting that.

Check out historical graduation pictures on page four.

New Albany High School senior Romeo Langford signs autographs Monday night at New Albany High School in New Albany, Indiana. Hundreds of fans waited in line to get an autograph after Langford committed to the IU men’s basketball program.

THIS ABOVE ALL: TO THINE OWN SELF BE TRUE By Jake Thomer jjthomer@iu.edu | @jakethethomer

NEW ALBANY, Ind. — As the storm of Monday night’s announcement raged around him, Romeo Langford sat calmly at the center of it all. Elevated on a stage surrounded by family members and other New Albany High School luminaries, Langford coolly gazed out at the nearly 100 media members directly in front of him and the thousands of spectators on either side. Langford’s high school coach, Jim Shannon, delivered glowing words about his soon-to-be former star player, as did his pastor, Mike Ward. A tribute video for Langford played on two large projector screens adjacent to his seat on the stage. It was a spectacle fit for a five-star recruit who would eventually com-

mit to the biggest school in the state, where he was just named Mr. Basketball. But Langford wasn’t there for the pomp and circumstance. “He does not seek the spotlight,” Shannon said of Langford. “The spotlight seeks him.” After a year spent chasing the Indiana high school scoring record, during which thousands of fans followed Langford around the state to watch him do so, it seemed the spotlight was shining brighter than ever before Monday night. Each speaker who took the stage ahead of Langford’s announcement had kind words to share about the high schooler’s character, humility and poise. He showed off all those traits and more as he sat with a straight face throughout the ceremony. A paranoid spectator might have sensed doubt or impending guilt on

Langford’s face. His father Tim made a point to let the audience know Romeo’s decision was his own and deserving of respect regardless of the outcome. “We wanted to do something special for the fans that have been supporting him for all four years of his high school career,” Tim told the crowd. “The decision he made is what he made. It’s what he wants to do.” Anticipation built, especially after the lengthy preamble, but Langford ultimately put Hoosier fans at ease. Langford delivered a quick few minutes of thanks before stating his decision. They were the usual platitudes offered by top recruits before announcing a commitment. It might have been the only usual thing about the 30-minute long commitment ceremony, but it was left to the quiet 18-year-old to offer humility when

met with adoration. By the time Langford placed the ill-fitting crimson IU hat on his head, the crowd was exploding around him. As Shannon said, Monday night was not the first time the spotlight was on Langford. And it certainly won’t be the last. His decision evoked memories of Damon Bailey, Eric Gordon, Cody Zeller and many more in-state heroes who stayed home to play for IU. More attention, pressure and love for Romeo Langford will come in the next year. If Monday night and the past four years are any indication, Langford will remain a calming presence in the middle of whatever chaos surrounds him. “It never was (overwhelming),” Tim Langford said of the recruiting process. “We didn’t let it get that way. We just enjoyed the road.”

Hope follows Romeo Langford to IU as expectations increase Michael Ramirez is a sophomore in media.

NEW ALBANY, Ind. — Romeo Langford is an Indiana Hoosier. IU fans can shout it from the rooftops as loud as they want. The Hoosiers did it. They managed to land one of the best recruits the state of Indiana has ever seen. IU could now have possibly one of the best players to ever wear the cream and crimson in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall next season. Hoosier fans are surely thinking about hanging a sixth national championship banner now, and who could blame them? What started as a dream turned into reality. It seemed like an eternity waiting for Langford to announce his college choice, and the process finally concluded Monday evening. IU is getting a bigtime player in Langford, who brings size, shooting and ball-handling to the table. At the high-school level,

Langford had the ability to score whenever he wanted to and create something out of nothing. It’s obviously not set in stone, but his ability to create could translate seamlessly while wearing a Hoosier uniform. What’s interesting about his decision is how IU got to this point. Langford said he didn’t really have IU in the mix of his college choices at the beginning of his senior season. This means IU Coach Archie Miller worked wonders between then and now. It also speaks volumes to what Miller can bring to IU in the future. Miller has already started recruiting the likes of Keion Brooks, Trendon Watford and Trayce Jackson-Davis. All three prospects are in the class of 2019, and, after seeing a player like Langford commit, their heads could be turning toward Bloomington as well. The Hoosiers managed to captivate the heart of one of the most beloved athletes from the state

of Indiana in just a matter of months. There’s no way other recruits won’t look at Langford’s commitment and not be interested in what Miller and company have to offer. Miller’s ability to lure Langford away from powerhouses such as Duke, Kansas and North Carolina could be the start of something bigger. Bigger than Romeo Langford? The player who finished fourth in all-time high school scoring in the state of Indiana? Possibly. If IU can land five-star talent for years to come, the hardware will follow. It could start next season with Langford. Miller’s staff has already worked wonders from the early days of his arrival in Bloomington. From showering Langford and former IU recruit Darius Garland with admiration at Hoosier Hysteria, to improving IU’s abysmal defense within his first year, it’s hard to look at any aspect of the program and not be impressed with what has been done.

EVAN DE STEFANO | IDS

New Albany High School senior Romeo Langford is interviewed by the media after announcing he would play men’s basketball at IU on Monday night at New Albany High School in New Albany, Indiana. Langford, a five-star recruit, completes IU Coach Archie Miller’s 2018 recruiting class.

Finally, IU can check off the biggest task it set out to accomplish. The focus is now on next season and beyond. IU could return to its blue-blood

status as one of the nation’s top colleges at which to play basketball. If that’s the case, the point of origin could be New Albany, Indiana.

ment. We respect our opponent, but it’s about us right now staying in the moment.” For the Scarlet Knights, senior infielder Rebecca Hall has been their best player all season. She leads the team with a .379 batting average, 58 hits, 38 RBIs and seven home runs. Hall is one of two players who bat over .300. In Big Ten play, Rutgers as a team ranks ninth in the conference with a .249 BA. Rutgers has shown an ability to put runs on the board, but the problem all season has been in the circle. The Scarlet Knights rank

last in the Big Ten with a 7.20 ERA, and have given up 178 hits and 33 home runs in just the 17 conference games. Last weekend against Michigan State, Rutgers failed to score more than two runs in each game and gave up 25 combined hits in the series. “I think we just want to carry our home with us and dominate wherever we are,” Galovich said. “We want to just show everybody that we’re here to win and we’re not messing around.” Against No. 15 Michigan last weekend, IU only scored

one combined run in two of the three games. Now, the Hoosiers have the perfect opportunity to find momentum at the plate with the Big Ten Tournament just around the corner. “It’s an exciting weekend, you want to go in strong to the conference tournament,” Stanton said. “Our athletes feel really good about what we came off of last weekend. We’re going up to Rutgers and are going to play one pitch at a time. We know what we’re fighting for, we’re fighting for that bye still. We’re full steam ahead.”

MEN’S GOLF

IU finishes 12th at Big Ten Championships From IDS reports

The 2018 season is most likely over for the IU men’s golf team after its 12th place finish at the Big Ten Championships. The team traveled to Baltimore in hopes of a strong tournament after finishing one stroke back of first at the Boilermaker Intercollegiate. But, IU got quite the opposite. No Hoosiers finished in the top-20 of the field.

while giving up two runs.

By Stefan Krajisnik

Sophomore Brock Ochsenreiter was the only IU golfer to finish in the top50 with his tied-for-22nd finish. Ochsenreiter’s success came thanks in large part to a strong second round. He shot a 4-under, 66, marking the first time a Hoosier has posted that score at a conference tournament since 2006. Ochsenreiter could not carry IU to victory, as its top golfer, junior Jake

Brown, and third golfer, senior Brendon Doyle, finished in a tie for 51st at the conference tournament. This tournament could also be the final of Doyle’s career, after what was his best season. Doyle posted an average round score of 74.38 which is the best of his career and earned co-medalist honors at the Windon Memorial in the fall. IU headed into the Big Ten Championships

ranked 89th in the national rankings. Brown was selected as an individual to compete in the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships later this month. He will be one of 45 indivuals taking part in the Bryan Regional at Texas A&M University. Brown is the first men’s golfer to advance to a NCAA Regional since 2007. Stefan Krajisnik

The last time IU baseball took on Minnesota, it ended in heartbreak for the Hoosiers. In just the third game of the 2017 Big Ten Tournament, which was played at Bart Kaufman Field, IU took an 8-4 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning. With Minnesota playing the role of the home team, the Golden Gophers made use of the bottom half of the inning and put up five runs to stun the Hoosiers and win the game 9-8. The two teams will face off for the first time since that game during a threegame series this weekend at Siebert Field in Minneapolis. Here are three things to note for the series. Status of Pauly Milto Junior starting pitcher Pauly Milto has been unable to pitch for the Hoosiers since April 13. Milto has battled arm soreness, and missed both Saturday starts against Ohio State and Illinois. However, Milto was warming up in the bullpen during Sunday’s 9-2 win against Illinois and participated in scrimmages during the week. Although no announcement has been made, Milto is expected to return for IU against Minnesota. However, if Milto were to miss the start, the Saturday starter for IU would be sophomore Cam Beauchamp, with junior Tim Herrin on the mound Sunday. Junior Jonathan Stiever will remain in his usual Friday night spot. Against Ohio State, Beauchamp and Herrin combined for eight innings pitched while giving up eight runs — with only four of those runs being earned runs. It was the opposite against Illinois as the two combined for 13 innings

Minnesota’s Militia To say Minnesota’s offense has been dominant might be an understatement. The Golden Gophers are averaging more than seven runs per game, lead the Big Ten in batting average and have five starters batting above .300. Minnesota uses small ball to succeed as the team is tied for 142nd nationally in home runs. However, Minnesota averages more than five walks per game. The Golden Gophers also don’t strikeout much, as they average fewer than eight strikeouts per nine innings. Stiever comes into Friday’s game leading the Big Ten in strikeouts, setting up an exciting opening game. Potential postseason preview As seen last season, these two teams will most likely face each other in the postseason again. Along with the aforementioned comeback victory, the Golden Gophers also handed the Hoosiers a loss in the first game of last year’s Big Ten Tournament. Both teams could find themselves squaring off again in Omaha, Nebraska, in the Big Ten Tournament this season. With Minnesota recently cracking the top-25 national rankings, the teams could even face each other beyond the conference tournament in the postseason. With an 11-3 conference record, Minnesota sits one game back from first place in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers are 9-5 in conference and are in fifth place. Both Ohio State and Illinois have been important series for IU, but the upcoming series with Minnesota could be even more valuable to the team’s conference and national rankings.

In its final conference series of the season, IU softball has a chance to make history. If IU can sweep Rutgers in Piscataway, New Jersey, this weekend, it’ll mark 19 Big Ten wins on the season – good for second most in IU history and the team’s most since 1994. “Our mindset is just calm, very driven and motivated,” junior infielder Sarah Galovich said. “We’re not going to make this a bigger deal than it is. We’re going to go in there, get the job done and come out successful.” Rutgers sits in last place in the Big Ten with a 2-15 record and has a 15-game losing streak. The Hoosiers have previously found success against the bottom teams in the conference like Purdue, Penn State and Maryland. Despite the two teams’ opposite fortunes this season, Rutgers holds the alltime advantage against IU, 8-7, and has won eight of the past 11 matchups. In 2017, IU defeated Rutgers a combined 32-7 in the first two games before failing to close out the sweep, losing 7-5. “Our goal this weekend is to be very aggressive at the plate,” IU Coach Shonda Stanton said. “It’s an opportunity for us to tune-up and really feel good about going into the Big Ten Tourna-

IU Auditorium releases new season lineup By Christine Fernando ctfernan@iu.edu

Another semester will bring award-winning Broadway shows, musical acts and family favorites to the IU Auditorium for its new season, which runs from October 2018 to April 2019. From musicals “Chicago,” “Elf the Broadway Musical” and “Finding Neverland,” to performances by Straight No Chaser and the Cleveland Orchestra, the IU Auditorium has announced 14 productions and acts set to take the stage. “We at IU Auditorium have the privilege of delivering a variety of world-class arts and entertainment right to Bloomington’s doorstep,” said Doug Booher, the auditorium’s executive director, in a press release. Here’s a look at some of the upcoming shows. Check out the rest of the lineup online at idsnews.com Chicago At 8 p.m. Oct. 10 and 11, the Broadway musical “Chicago” will hit the auditorium stage. The musical made its debut in 1966 before going on to receive six Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards and a Grammy, cementing it as one of the longest-running American musicals in Broadway history, according to the release. “‘Chicago" has everything that makes Broadway great: a universal tale of fame, fortune and all that jazz, accompanied by one show-stopping number after another,” according to the release. The musical, set in the roaring 20s, follows two rival showbiz stars as they tumble through the media circus caused by the murders they supposedly committed. Dennis James Hosts

Halloween Dennis James will return to Bloomington for a special 50th anniversary event at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 26. An orchestra of students from IU’s Jacobs School of Music will accompany the 1925 silent film “The Phantom of the Opera” at the family-friendly event. Hayden Denesha, staff conductor and youth orchestra director for the South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra, will direct the orchestra. Monty Python’s Spamalot The 2005 Tony Awardwinning Best Musical will stop by the IU Auditorium at 8 p.m. Oct. 30 and 31. The irreverent musical comedy was adapted from the 1975 film “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.” It tells the story of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table during the quest to find the Holy Grail. The musical combines skits and antics with bold Broadway numbers and medieval style set designs. “Flying cows, killer rabbits, taunting Frenchmen and show-stopping musical numbers are just a few of the reasons audiences worldwide are eating up ‘Spamalot!’” the release said.

Set in 1595, the musical follows two brothers names Nick and Nigel Bottom as they try to write a hit play that turns into the world’s first musical.

Miller marks recruiting success By Andrew Hussey aphussey@iu.edu | @thehussnetwork

NEW ALBANY, Ind. — In IU Coach Archie Miller’s introductory press conference, he talked about inside-out recruiting, where he would focus his recruiting efforts first and foremost in the state of Indiana. The first steps of that plan came together Monday night as Miller landed the commitment of guard Romeo Langford, who was named 2018 Indiana Mr. Basketball on Sunday night. Langford represents the first big recruiting get of Miller’s tenure at IU. Currently the fifth-ranked prospect in the nation by ESPN, Langford was the top uncommitted recruit in the class of 2018. For Langford, the choice was simple. “I just felt like Indiana was the best fit,” Langford said. He met with his family this past Saturday and discussed his decision. His family said they were behind him 100 percent. The decision took time as Langford dragged the date of his announcement to nearly the last possible moment. His recruitment had lingered over the state of Indiana for years, but, for his family members, they didn’t feel any extra weight on their shoulders. “There never was pressure with us,” Romeo’s father, Tim Langford, said.
